QUOTE (SpainSOXfan09 @ Mar 18, 2011 -> 01:43 AM) This, I doubt we get anything for him in a trade, but you never know. Would luv to get one of those 11 draft picks the Rays have piled up. Especially in either the 1st or 2nd round, yeah right. Wouldn't be able to do that, they wouldn't have been under team control for a full year so they wouldn't be able to trade them. Beyond that, that's something the Rays really try to avoid as they really can't afford to deal any of their prospects considering how much in-house development they do. Oh, and if Lastings Milledge hits 15 homers, someone will have gotten seriously injured early in the year. He's simply not that type of hitter. His career high is 14, and that was over 587 plate appearances.

Just like the Cardinals were afraid to put Adam Wainwright into the rotation. He sure sucked in 2007 when he was a first year starter after being a reliever for a full year.

Some of the stories were generally disgusting to the point that I really didn't find myself entertained by reading them (the quiet Asian girl and the girl who would do anything specifically). I enjoyed most of his book, even if a lot of it really is fabricated. Now, back on topic

QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 08:24 PM) So, the first article involving the "threat" of having players go to the CFL or UFL pops up today. Like all of the independent baseball, hockey, and basketball leagues that opened up during those sports' strikes/lockouts! Uh huh, yeah, OK. The only league to ever have anything close to that type of impact like was the USFL. That was 25 years ago and the league lasted 5 years. There is a 0% chance any other football league replaces the NFL. (not that you were actually suggesting this knight, just in general)

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 06:08 PM) Can I ask you a question? Let's say the Sox did put Sale in AAA to start the year. They don't bring him up until the end of August and when they do they place him in the bullpen. Prior to this, the Sox use a bunch of AAAA type players to fill this spot. At the same time, Will Ohman serves as our left-handed setup man and is forced to face more right-handed hitters than he should. The Sox end up losing the division to the Twins by one game. Are you still happy? Would you have wished you had Sale in the bullpen all year? It will be better because they will win 86 games in 2012 and will lose the division by only 5 games with Sale getting 5 more starts next year instead of the 83 and 8 games that would have happened originally.

QUOTE (3E8 @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 08:40 PM) He'd be a perfect platoon with Quentin if you believe Carlos' reverse splits are legit. But not many people do. By not many people, I believe you mean Ozzie. It's hard not to believe it when you have 1421 PAs against righties at an .857 OPS and 528 PAs against lefties with a .773 OPS. With that type of sample size, you have to respect his platoon splits. Quite honestly, Quentin seems like the kind of guy who would be a great player for Tampa, considering Maddon quite strictly goes by statistics and not by the typical book. He would use Quentin against RHP and he would produce like crazy. Of course, that would be only after he were non-tendered by the White Sox this year and there were limited to no interest in him next offseason.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 01:33 PM) Perhaps you could mention to AFLAC that you'd like to take Gilbert Godfrey's role as the voice of the duck I kid...good stuff though Blake...have to be willing to take what is there for the taking! AFFFFFFFLACCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCC

QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 01:36 PM) Clemson collapses as usual. It seems as though every year Clemson has a plethora of talent on their football and basketball teams, and often has the better team on the field or court, but always finds a way to lose. Like clockwork. I was amazed they made it into the tournament period.

A lot deeper than most people understand? What is that even supposed to mean?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 17, 2011 -> 08:20 AM) The question is...how long would the team have tolerated it if Omar was hitting .180 instead of .280. Or if he was a rookie instead of a 20 year veteran. If Omar went to the wrong party... The wrong party? Seems to me Brian Anderson went out pretty much every single night. Ozzie's been around the game for 30 years. He knows guys party. He's not going to call someone out and dislike someone based on their lifestyle if they went to the wrong party.

I didn't take the quality of the gentlemen into context, so that is wrong, and it may not be the Kappa Sigmas that wrote it. Regardless, it's still quite heinous and anybody who even thought of it was in a pretty terrible state of mind.

There's guys being guys, and then there is this, which is just offensive, over the top, and sickening. I hope the USC IFC comes/came down hard on them.

After 3 months of applying for jobs, things are finally starting to look up a little bit. There's nothing sexy about them, but I have a meeting with Aflac next Tuesday to, I believe, be an independent insurance salesperson. I talked to a woman today about a chance to cook sample food products at places like Sam's Club and Wal-Mart, which is not a sexy job in the least but pays $11/hr and is generally very easy work and would also allow me to further develop my customer service and verbal communication skills. There are also a couple of other jobs - washing windows ($12/hr, but it's an all summer job and I'd like to move in the middle of the summer...my brother-in-law knows the owner of the business so I don't want to screw him over in the middle of the summer) and possibly filling fertilizer trucks as well (though that would be temporary). I also still have several other applications outstanding, but I'm feeling pretty good at this point. Just need to make enough money to get on my feet, and then I'm going to get up and go.

Five things the Sox need from Spring Training

QUOTE (SpainSOXfan09 @ Mar 16, 2011 -> 09:25 PM) Any one worried aout the lack of hitting so far? I mean they really haven't torn the cover off the ball. Not in the least -
QUOTE (SpainSOXfan09 @ Mar 16, 2011 -> 02:56 PM) This. If we take back a no name prospect with a little bit if upside at least negates the money we would have to take back on a similar bad contract. If the trade could involve a prospect who needs a change of scenery then we just eat salary at the MILB level which is way less that an inflated MLB contract. Can anyone think of any prospects out there that fit this bill? Any 23-26 year old pitcher who can throw it in the lower to mid 90s with some semblance of control would be worth Mark Teahen plus $2.5 mill next offseason (as of this moment). If you want an example, I would absolutely take a Philip Humber or Shane Lindsay for Mark Teahen so long as they don't have to take up a spot on the 40-man roster in 2012.

Sounded like a good game overall from the Sox. Can't worry too much about the loss considering it sounds like 4 of the 5 runs were given up by pitchers who are going to be riding buses next month.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 15, 2011 -> 11:48 PM) Love's rebounding and by far superior offensive efficiency trumps Noah's impact defensively. But can you still beat Boston or Orlando in the playoffs? Seems to me they'll both just feed it down low all game and terrorize the Bulls. Maybe Asik can do that some day, but surely not in the next two years.

QUOTE (qwerty @ Mar 15, 2011 -> 09:52 PM) There is a movie from 2009 called frequently asked questions about time travel. I found it surprisingly enjoyable despite the fact anna faris is in it. Anna faris is in it minimally, so don't let her scare you off, if she was about to. There was only one movie she was ever close to good in, and that was Waiting. And I still hated her in it.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 15, 2011 -> 11:09 PM) So if the Wolves called Forman up and said Love for Noah, what do you do? Anybody that's says they'd keep Noah is a bold-faced liar. Love is obviously a better rebounder, but he doesn't seem like he is capable of playing good defense as a center. Noah obviously can. If you were in a vacuum and were just considering talent alone, then absolutely, but this isn't baseball where an upgrade in talent anywhere means an upgrade in talent for the overall team. You have to consider the needs of the Bulls, and really, they need Noah more than they need Kevin Love. There would be times it would be fun to watch, but Noah for Love doesn't make the Bulls a better team.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 15, 2011 -> 07:33 AM) If Tyler Flowers were to get 470 at bats and strike out 70 times, he's hitting 35+ HR, not the 20 that Barajas hits. The problem with Flowers is that if you give him 470 AB's, he's likely to have 170+ strikeouts, not 70. The most favorable comparison one can make with Flowers based on peripherals is to Mike Napoli, but that's his absolute best case scenario at this point. If we are taking peripherals out of the equation - which was mainly what I was implying - then comparing Flowers to Barajas makes more sense. He'll draw more walks than Barajas, but he might not hit above .200. Perhaps some combination of Napoli and Barajas. Perhaps Ron Karkovice's 1993 season with 15-20 more walks. .225/.325/.425. He's a big time boom or bust player due to the fact that he is a big time true outcome player (BB, K, HR), and his fluctuations in BABIP will have a more pronounced effect on his overall splits.

Just looking at numbers, Shoemaker looks like the best bet to take a big step forward. He's shown the most power and the best plate discipline thus far and he doesn't have the worst strike out rate I've ever seen (though 25.3% is still quite high). Colligan looks like his ceiling is about that of a 4th OFer (and considering he played like 40 games in LF, 50 games in CF, and 15 games in RF, he looks the part too, though some of that was filling in for injured players). I think he's probably the safest pick out of any of these guys to take some sort of step forward due to his running ability, a bit of power, a solid eye, and the ability to fight off a K every now and then. I don't know how his defense is but he looks OK. Ciolli's peripherals are just scary bad. Doesn't walk, strikes out a ton, and he wasn't very good on the basepaths last year either. I'm going to guess that he is the most talented of that group, but he's got a long ways to go. He was mentioned briefly in the article, but the player I really want to see perform this year is Jose Martinez. He looked like he was going to be a pretty solid player until 2009 rolled around, and then he barely got back on the field last year. He's always showed a pretty good ability to hit the ball and he's had a bit of power in the past, but I'm hoping he takes that next step forward and gets a lot more of those to start falling.

HEY, DICK SUCH!

Zumaya is constantly a ticking time bomb. The Tigers should be thankful for anything they get from him this year. I wouldn't be entirely surprised if he didn't throw a meaningful pitch.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Mar 15, 2011 -> 04:14 PM) I do believe the Cubs are paying for >$11M for Silva this year and there's a decent chance he doesn't even make the team. If he could pitch out of the bullpen, he would be. He would be getting lights-out closer money for mop-up innings. There are other bench guys getting 4.5M. It's not a good contract, but it's a zit compared to the full-blown MRSA infection of Silva and Bradley. Carlos Silva was worth ~2 WAR last year (1.8 bWAR, 2.1 fWAR). That's got a market value of approximately $9 mill if you assume that teams pay $4.5 mill per win share. So, at $11 mill, he was worth $2 mill less and fulfilled approximately 82% of that value (simply using 9/11 here). Compare that to Teahen, who was essentially worthless last year ( -0.4 bWAR and -0.1 fWAR). That gives him a negative worth and means he didn't do anything to justify his salary. He was absolutely awful. That's why teams are actually scouting Carlos Silva. There is value there - he is a league average starter who can give you a few innings. If he doesn't make the Cubs, it's either because he is out of shape and not throwing the ball well at all or because the Cubs front office is incompetent. Mark Teahen can't be counted on to start anywhere because his bat isn't strong enough to overcome mediocre defense in LF or RF, and he is atrocious defensively at 3B and 2B, and nobody wants to TRADE for a $5 mill a year bench player. I will argue all day and everyday that Teahen's contract is worse than Silva, and I'd probably argue it over Bradley too (although Bradley is CRAZY). The best thing the Sox can do is to put Teahen into positions where he can be successful or, at the very least, appear to be successful so as to improve his value so that you can either dump him on someone at some point during the year or the offseason without kicking in any cash. Or, similar to the Linebrink move, take on $2-3 million and take back a no one prospect, because retaining some value from a failed investment is better than retaining no value, and at $2-3 mill for the year, some team who lacks depth will surely take on Teahen, because there are moments where he appears to be a solid major league hitter.
