White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread
witesoxfan replied to Chisoxfn's topic in 2011 Season in Review
QUOTE (since56 @ Feb 3, 2011 -> 08:27 AM) He will want to be a starter. Presented with the list of pitching free agents I think he is the best. He may get a good chance to start with the Sox as we don't know Peavey's situation and he could just plain be better than Floyd. Although I do have reservations about picking up veterans off the scrap heap. Besides if there is anyting not right with him can't Coop fix him? He may start in Chicago. He will start in Cleveland. See the difference? -
Sox have been trying to extend Danks for 2.5 years

QUOTE (joeynach @ Feb 3, 2011 -> 01:30 AM) I have not heard of the sox offering anything close to what a pitcher like danks would get. Jon Lester got 5 years 30M, Zach Grienke got 4 years 38M. When the sox offer Danks something close to Grienke got then we can talk for real. Until then all we know is that Danks was offered a 4 Year 16M deal, same one that Flloyd accepted. Shocking that he turned it down, hes about 10x better than Gavin. If the sox offered Danks something like 4 Year 40M right now he would probably accept it, 6M in 2011, 8M in 2012, 12M in 2013, 14M in 2014. BOOM! Jon Lester signed his deal after he had a little over 2 years of service time and I don't believe he was even arbitration eligible when he signed the deal. Lester also had cancer, so cashing in when he could was a very good idea. That was also 2 years ago in very different economic circumstances as well. Greinke signed his 4 year extension before he won the Cy Young. That $13.5 million free agent year value is for a player who is a 3.50 ERA pitcher with other potential problems. Beyond that, these players wanted to sign extensions. That's why they did and ended up being signed for a "discount," though given the circumstances of both of them, it was pretty fair value. Danks has proven he's durable, he's good, and he's closer to free agency. He's going to get paid. 4/$40 is not nearly enough. If the Sox want to sign him long term, they are going to have to pay him $15 million value, which would be $51 million over the next 4 years. I think he can get more than that, and I think that he thinks he can get more than that, and I'm about 99.7% sure he can. That BOOM! is a door slamming in the White Sox front office because Barry and Danks won't even think about taking $40 million over 4 years. Randy Wolf got $10 million a year. Do you really think that Randy Wolf and John Danks are comparable pitchers? -

QUOTE (Rooftop Shots @ Feb 2, 2011 -> 10:59 PM) After all of the money that we just dished out, the only way that I can see us giving Danks a big contract is if we at least go deep into the playoffs. We'll still have a good core for the following year, and some guarateed seats being full, as fans will have more confidence in what we have already set for the following year. . That.....along with Buehrle possibly being gone, the money would be there along with him being a lefty as a big incentive. Money per year is not the problem, as I have little doubt the Sox have any qualms with paying John Danks $15+ million a year. The problem is the length of the deal. It used to be that the Sox didn't go more than 3 years with a pitcher, but that has been broken with the signings of Buehrle and Linebrink - both 4 year deals - as well as the acquisition of Peavy, who was signed for an additional 3 years after the Sox acquired him (which is technically around 3.3 years). Two of the three were injured AND ineffective within 2 years of coming to Chicago, and with Linebrink, it was within the first year of that 4 year deal. Other teams are willing to give pitchers 6-7 years, especially when they have shown no durability issues in the past. Danks is hoping for that. Unless the Sox can do some major convincing, Danks will almost certainly hit the free agent market. Perhaps they will be willing to go 5 years with Danks along with a mutual option for a 6th year, but that's about the only scenario in which I can envision the Sox resigning Danks. -
Alexei batting leadoff would be a disaster. He should not be hitting in front of Konerko and Dunn, he should be hitting behind them.

QUOTE (since56 @ Feb 2, 2011 -> 05:37 PM) Millwood He is going to want a spot in the rotation all year. He won't get that here. He should in Cleveland. -
QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Feb 2, 2011 -> 04:35 PM) See above. I must have missed the post where I said Escobar was an OBP player. In the Free Agent market it's harder to find a short stop who has a glove. Not so much with slow corner defenders with a stick. Hell just look at this past off season. Dunn, Pena, Manny, Victor Martinez (I know he's a catcher but sorry, no way he plays that deal out at catcher), Konerko, Huff, Thome and Vlad off the top of my head. I actually think it's the other way around in that it's hard to find a SS that can hit pretty well. Of the 22 SS's who qualified for the batting title last year and will almost certainly be playing SS this year, only 3 of them had an OPS over .800 and 8 above .725. They have to be able to field relatively well if they're going to play SS. If not, they will be moved to 2B or 3B. Small sample size, but here are Viciedo's pitch values from last year. Fastball: -3.4 Slider: 5 Cutter: 1.4 Curveball: -1.1 Changeup: 0.4 Those numbers would suggest anything but Viciedo being a dead fastball power hitter.

QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Feb 2, 2011 -> 02:32 PM) Well to be really fair, the white sox would have to develop somebody worthwhile more than once a decade Except he said he was the best SS in the AL many times in 2010 but ok.......Plus isn't it a valid criticism? Alexei's OBP the past three years: .317, .333, .313. Yuck. It's funny nobody can prove that, nor can they give a reason as to why he has a bias, besides of course the "HE WAS THERE FOR THE DAVID WELLS TRADE!!!!1" which isn't true. It's a small point, but there really is nothing wrong with a .333 OBP. I mean, he's not the leadoff hitter. It would be amazing if Alexei Ramirez could combine the power he had in '08, the plate discipline he had in '09, and the defense he had in '10 He would be a 5+ WAR player. It would also be awesome if I stumbled into a lucrative inheritance as well.

QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Feb 2, 2011 -> 08:23 AM) Wait. A guy who basically has no position, and is blocked at DH by Dunn/Konerko and has major questions about whether he can hit enough to justify the awful defense and I'm supposed to buy into the hype? And do we know he IS 21? Because that first sentence made me laugh really, really hard. They are trying him in the outfield this year to get his bat into the lineup. Assuming he can be even Carlos Lee out there defensively, he's going to play. And he is going to hit. Whether he develops his plate discipline is going to be the biggest indicator in how he makes it. Anybody who takes Escobar over Viciedo is only taking him because Escobar's floor is much higher than Viciedo's. At the very least, Escobar should turn out to be a pretty damn good utility infielder, whereas Viciedo could certainly flame out and never be able to make it past AAA. Based on pure potential, Viciedo could be a .900+ OPS type of hitter.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 10:32 PM) If Teahen's 2007-2009 seasons, where he was a full-time player for the Royals with at least 544 at-bats in each of those seasons, coupled with what we all witnessed last season, comes across to you as "average" offensive production, what body of work from other MLB players with similar amount of at-bats and at the same positions Teahen has played would qualify them as "less than average"? That's really my point, here. What some may be charitably willing to classify this guy's production as "average", I am saying it seems to me as "below average". Remember - if there is "average" production out there, there then has to be "less than average" production somewhere. I believe that's what Teahen has provided throughout his career to date. I think you're probably right, but it's also semantics, and quite frankly, it's a bit of a ticky tack point arguing about the production level of a bench player, doesn't it? If he is average, that'd be amazing, and if he is below average, then he's still fine.

QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 06:47 PM) Ben is/was WAY quicker than Fredette. The problem with these 6'2"/6'3" combo guards is that for every good one like Gordon or Curry that are 2 others that are nothing but role players and three more that never even got a shot at the league. How much of that is related to work ethic though? From everything I have seen, Fredette is one of the hardest working players in college basketball right now.

2011 Twins talent vs. White Sox talent
witesoxfan replied to ChicagoWhiteSUX6outoflast9's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (WhiteSUX @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 05:13 PM) Plus as an added bonus your buddy will be able to catch all of the Twinkies games since they have Fox Sports North. Yeah Dick and Bert are pretty awful. They were talking about Delmon Young as an MVP candidate last year. Atleast stories about golf and b****ing about the umpiring crew don't involve blatant homerism like that. -
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 04:32 PM) Ugh.. But not so ugh... 1. He's bad. 2. He's not the worst defensive 1Bman in the league. 3. Playing him there once or twice a week is not going to significantly hurt the club in the long run.

QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 07:20 PM) Logan was named the best LOOGY in baseball last year by Baseball Prospectus, IIRC That would have been silly because there were certainly had to be better, more well-defined LOOGY's in baseball last year. Logan threw 40 innings...22 against lefties, 18 against righties. Against lefties, he allowed 15 hits, 10 walks, struck out 30, and didn't allow a homer for a WHIP of 1.14, K/9 of 12.3, and BB/9 of 4.1. He was certainly good, but you almost have to think there was someone better. Matt Thornton was easily better, but he also threw more innings against righties than he did lefties. Again though, it's not as if Logan pitched almost primarily against LHP. Thornton threw 28 innings against lefties, allowed 17 hits, 6 walks, struck out 44, and allowed 2 home runs. That's a WHIP of 0.82, a K/9 of 14.1, and a BB/9 of 1.9. Each of those is better than Logan's except for the 2 home runs (though I don't think it can technically count as a home run unless it hits the ground, which one of those "home runs" still has not done).

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 04:09 PM) I think Teahen is just as likely, if not more likely. It gets Ozzie an extra LH bat against RHP. Getting Dunn into the field every now and then to satisfy his desire to play the field would be good for his morale though. Teahen should be happy just to get into the lineup.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 04:09 PM) The rates would be higher if they covered a half season, but if a team was really expecting a guy to get hurt, they might well have written the policy that way. And also paid a much higher premium. It's not out of the realm of possibility, I just don't think this is the case. I don't have any insight into the situation though, so it's impossible for me to be certain of anything.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 04:10 PM) Then we need to figure out a way for them to get into Teahen's head. Gotta have defensive talent to be able to play defense. Teahen has virtually none.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 03:59 PM) He didn't do jack in the game that got them to the Super Bowl and is lucky he squeaked by a team that had to run a 3rd string passer out there for an entire half. He really only made one bad pass the entire game though, and the Packers played a pretty conservative game considering they were up by 2 touchdowns for most of the game. He played well early and they went into kill the clock mode later pretty much throughout the entirety of the second half (especially when Cutler didn't take the field after the Urlacher pick). Had the Packers needed to drive down the field, I'm pretty sure Rodgers could have done it. He simply didn't need to.

QUOTE (GREEDY @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 03:28 PM) I am now convinced Sale is going to the rotation. I am a believer that the Dunn money came from Peavy insurance, and that Ohman was added because Thornton is going to close. I don't think that there is any insurance money for Peavy because he is not going to miss a significant amount of time. If insurance companies were to give out insurance for injuries that took less than a year to recover from, they'd be bankrupt. Insurance policies are for guys like Albert Belle who have an extreme condition come up that does not allow them to continue playing baseball when you are still on hook for the contract. Further, I think the White Sox signed Will Ohman because they feel that either Sale or Thornton will be the best closer and Ozzie wants to have one more lefty to use early in the game. So I believe you are wrong. Of course, I could very well be wrong too.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 1, 2011 -> 03:01 PM) Surrounding him with Ozzie and then Omar is genius for Alexei's career arc. I think they've given a lot of credit to Cora too. But seriously, if there is one area this team has a lot of expertise, it is with regards to infield defense.
