QUOTE (MuckFinnesota @ Feb 6, 2011 -> 09:25 PM) Any time someone does something to drop the weight - is it really necessary for any exercises, and if so, why? Grunters, heavy breathers, big sweaty guys who don't rerack and leave the weights in random places on the floor. Throwing the bar down after cleans is actually safer than putting them down softly because it is much, much less strenuous on your back. You are tired from your workout, and, especially if you are doing a lot of weight, you are not going to be thinking about having good form when you set them down, but rather you are going to want the bar out of your hands, so the natural reaction will be to simply bend down and drop it that way. That is going to absolutely kill your back. So instead, you finish your last rep, and you just throw it down. People that are overzealous with their grunting can be annoying too, but again, if a guy is working his ass off, I don't mind it as much - if anything, I can find that somewhat motivating. If they are like screaming or make some crazy indigenous sounds after they are done with their workout? Completely unnecessary. Leaving weights everywhere too is a pain in the ass. Seriously, you got them out, you can put them back.

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread

QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 6, 2011 -> 07:14 PM) I read somewhere on here that the Bulls turned multi-millions profits last season. Perhaps, JR is taking his cut and putting it into the Sox this year. I'm quite sure that's illegal. He would have had to have sold his shares to be able to use that money towards the White Sox. -
QUOTE (chw42 @ Feb 6, 2011 -> 09:25 PM) Red Sox got Beltre, Cameron, and Scutaro though. And spent $80+ million on Lackey too. They made a few moves last year.

Sox have been trying to extend Danks for 2.5 years

Michael Blanke at least appears to have power at a premium position, so that alone could have a bit of value too if he can show some success at even W-S. -
Everything considered, is there a better QB in the league right now than Aaron Rodgers? Say what you will about the talent around him, because there's a ton of it, but he can absolutely sling it with the best of them. The only Tedford QB to actually be a good QB at the next level.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 6, 2011 -> 02:16 PM) If i'm looking at myself in the mirror it's not because I'm being vain, it's because I'm trying to make sure I'm isolating whatever muscle I'm working on and not cheating with my back (usually with curls) but unless you do it a bunch of times in a row I'm not going to be pissed if you get in front of me for 2 seconds. Triceps are the main one I use the mirror for, making sure I get full extension. I am a member of a smaller gym, so you'll have to excuse me that I don't have the same problems as everyone else, but my biggest pet peeve is when there is a radio that is just blaring on some stupid station and there is absolutely nobody listening to it whatsoever.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Feb 6, 2011 -> 12:24 PM) Matt Holliday plays in the NL. If you're bat's good enough, it's not an issue. I wouldn't rule out 1B in the long-range plan for Dayan either. Matt Holliday is pretty solid defensively. Carlos Lee would have been a better example.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 05:56 PM) Definitely agree. Just curious, though, how many of Alexei's errors were of the throwing variety? I'm only going off my admittedly-fuzzy memory, but I seem to recall him making some bad throws. Could totally be wrong. He had 3 throwing errors all year (according to Yahoo). June 22 against Atlanta, August 8th against Baltimore, and September 30th against Boston. Every other one was a fielding error.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 6, 2011 -> 12:49 AM) Unfortunately, I don't think rival GMs will reference fangraphs when evaluating his worth. Ha, I was just using Dunn's value per year. I genuinely have no idea what someone else would pay a DH, but outside of 2010, the White Sox have shown that they have no problem spending upwards of $10 mill a year on a DH if they are the right fit. Other teams have spent $6-8 mill (and sometimes more). It's just a matter of the quality of the hitter. I genuinely believe that a all bat, no glove player is far more valuable than a no bat, all glove player. The all glove player is more well rounded and can play in either league every day, but there isn't a lot of depth to his game. A good hitter can do quite a bit for a team, even if they are sitting on the bench, forcing the opposing manager to use a different pitcher.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Feb 3, 2011 -> 10:30 PM) But what's the market for an all bat, no position player? That's my concern. That would immediately eliminate the NL. And the DH only days seem to be coming to an end (there's obviously some exceptions). I would say that value is approximately $14 million a year.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 05:57 PM) That's one of those Kalapse questions. Alexei gets a s***-ton more defensive chances than, say, Derek Jeter (I think the number was something like 200+ more). I don't trust my memory to tell me if all of his errors were high degree-of-difficulty plays. If I get some time tonight or tomorrow, I can do a little digging into this. Really, it's just a matter of going through each box score and looking at what kind of error was made - not terribly difficult, just time consuming.

Sox have been trying to extend Danks for 2.5 years
witesoxfan replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I could certainly see the Sox offering something in the 12 mill a year range value wise, which would put them in the ballpark of your offer (7.2 in '11, 9.2 in '12, 12 in '13, 12 in '14, which is a total value of $40.4 mill) but as mentioned, it would not be smart for Danks to take that offer because he could almost certainly get two and a half times that amount on the open market assuming he can stay healthy. -
QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 06:37 PM) I'd have to say the West may have the best chance, but the Central will be another dogfight. The West has improved, but I don't think it's that good yet. The Rangers took a pretty big step back in losing Lee, even if they did bring in Beltre. The Athletics have a solid team and could be dangerous, but I still think they'll have trouble scoring runs. The Angels biggest moves were bringing in Scott Downs and trading for Vernon Wells - consider me extremely unimpressed with their offseason. Meanwhile, the White Sox and Twins both look like legitimate 90 win teams, perhaps better. My bet for best 2nd place team outside of the AL East is the Central, and they may have the best 2nd place team in the league anyways (though I tend to doubt that).

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 01:13 PM) because if you look it was like 3 in the morn or later and i just got back from the bar when i posted, and seeing that post dude made where he was puking at the thought of adding cantu i thought was a lil uncalled for, ive always been a cantu fan probably cause all i see is what hes done with the stick ^ what he said But he really hasn't done a lot offensively. He's hit for power, but if you took as many hard swings as he does, you'd be hardpressed not to hit for power. RBI is totally dependent on a player's spot in the lineup and those that are hitting in front of him, so it really means nothing in the long term. He doesn't walk a lot, and he doesn't really do anything else exciting offensively. There's a reason he's never had an OPS much higher than .800, and that's because he's really not that good. For a team like San Diego where that would present a potential upgrade or a great player off the bench, then absolutely it makes sense. The White Sox currently have 4 players - Morel, Teahen Vizquel, and Viciedo - than can man 3B. They have 4 - Konerko, Dunn, Teahen, and Viciedo - that can play 1B as well. Those are the only two positions you even want to consider playing Cantu, and the Sox have plenty of depth at both of them. No, I don't think Jorge Cantu is underrated. He put up an OPS of under .700 last year, and his career OPS is like .766. That's really not that impressive.

I hear that the Newark Bears are contenders. Seriously, I think the Newark Bears could be a good place for Dye. If he wants to keep playing, to play on a winner, and to play often, that is going to be his best opportunity.

QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 02:18 AM) youre sayin youd rather have brent morel and mark teahen over a guy making $850,000 whos averaged 18/83/37(doubles).274 the last 3 years( the team ranks from last year would put him tied for 5th with lexi in HR, 4th in RBIs, 1st in doubles by 7, and one point behind pierre for 4th in BA) and thats including last season where he only played 127 games...yes he'll strike out 100 times more than likely but with that kind of production coming from a guy whos making so little and would bat 7th or 8th i think itd be foolish to say he wouldnt make this team a lot better....i just read that fangraphs article on lexi...talk about underrated I also don't understand why you are still arguing this when Cantu has already signed with the Padres.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 09:08 AM) Has Kenny ever traded away one of our best players for prospects in an offseason? That seems 100 percent against what he does. I didn't see the word best in here. I was going to bring up the Vazquez example as a highly valued player being traded, but he definitely wasn't one of the Sox best players in 2008. -
QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Feb 4, 2011 -> 01:28 AM) you can do far worse than jorge cantu, the 3 times hes got 600 ABs in his career he put up lines of .286/28/117 (an mvp candidate) .277/29/95 and .289/16/100...if we get 75% of that production from Morel/Teahen id be amazed and for 850,000 my goodness i think thats a helluva bargain for the padres. He didnt exactly have a bad year last year either when he was with the marlins he was on pace for about 15hr and 77 rbis while hitting around .260, if morel/teahen can do that this teams gonna be scary as hell He is like Dayan Viciedo at the plate, except that he doesn't hit the ball very hard. He's not a very good player and San Diego can have him.
-
Exactly. And even if the Sox decide halfway through the year that they don't want/need Viciedo in the future, as they did with Dan Hudson this past year, atleast they have the ability to trade him still. They don't have that with a draft pick this year, and it would probably take an additional year beyond that to establish the trade value of that prospect assuming they don't get injured. I will gladly take Viciedo over that draft pick. I think most will.
