Jays trade Wells to Angels for Rivera/Napoli
witesoxfan replied to witesoxfan's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 22, 2011 -> 02:36 AM) Ok, but you can't say that Werth's signing was good from baseball standpoint, but not financially, and then immediately talk about the financial standpoint of the Well's trade. Wells for Napoli and Rivera isn't really that bad of a move, but it's financially f'ed up, just like the Werth deal is also financially f'ed up. What are you talking about? I said that Rivera could outproduce Wells at about 95% less cost, and they gave up Napoli too. That would pretty clearly indicate that I think it's both a baseball and financially terrible move. -

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 21, 2011 -> 11:11 PM) So far, this offseason has started and ended with "WTF" moves. First Jayson Werth's insane contract, then this trade. The Jayson Werth move atleast makes sense from a baseball standpoint, though it was financially f'ed up. This makes no sense at all. Juan Rivera himself could outproduce Vernon Wells, and he is due like 95% less money, and on top of that, the Angels gave up Napoli too. I imagine this is the kind of move that has blindsided quite a few GMs and probably Ken Williams too, because Quentin for Napoli would have made a ton of sense in early December. -

QUOTE (typewritermender @ Jan 21, 2011 -> 11:17 PM) Hahaha, "Get stuffed with Beckham?" That may be one of the worst slogans ever. Except for when McDonalds ran those Bill Wennington ads in the 90s with the slogan "Get f**ked by Wennington." ....or remember "Get destroyed from the inside out by Chelios?" ....too far? No, I generally like the subtlety of those. -
QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jan 21, 2011 -> 11:44 PM) too bad we still have TCQ and just gave him more money from arbitration i have a feeling dayan might never be a starting player for the sox unless we flat out release quentin (his value is horrible because he can't play defense) Viciedo is not ready to start in the majors. He is a good player and would have some success, but due to his lack of plate discipline, he would have extreme inconsistencies. Beyond that, he is not ready to be an outfielder. He may be more athletic and faster than Quentin, but from the sounds of it, he is completely incapable of playing the outfield at this point. Anything he added offensively would be compounded even moreso defensively and he would have negative value to the Sox. Beyond even that, Quentin DOES have value, and there would have been several teams willing to give up a solid, but not great, prospect for him this offseason simply due to his ability to be an MVP caliber hitter and the likelihood that he is worth more than -3 win shares as an outfielder this year. Finally, there is a very good chance that, if Quentin is mediocre all-around again this year, he will be non-tendered following the season which would open up a spot for Viciedo in RF, and Pierre is a free agent following the season, so it's also very possible that he is going to have a spot no matter what happens with Quentin. I would say you have approached the ledge far too quickly on this one.

BEARS 48 packers 2 Seriously, though, I think Bears win 17-14. I think the Bears defense can handle Rodgers, and I think Cutler plays really well. Like most games, this game will be all about ball control, and when we were talking about the necessity of a running game, this is the game people were talking about. If

Well the crazy part is that Toronto got better in this deal. Haven't looked, but I doubt that Rivera is good defensively, and Snider is probably average, but Davis is fast enough that he should be above average in CF. Rivera is a league average, perhaps a little above league average LF offensively, but the real win is Napoli because even considering that John Buck had a good year offensively last year, Napoli is even better offensively, and Arencibia is a pretty damn good prospect too. Every offseason, there always seems to be a move that makes you say "whaaa?" This is that trade. -
All I can say is what the fudge? Oh, and yes I know that it has already been talked about in the catch-all. This is newsworthy enough that it deserves its own thread.

Top 5 most underrated players in baseball.
witesoxfan replied to Jordan4life_2007's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The guy that immediately popped into my head was a player Starks mentioned, Andrew McCutchen. In a down year offensively around the league and the year where he was supposed to have a sophomore slump, he put up .286/.365/.449/.814. He walked about the same amount and cut his strikeout rate from 16.8% to 13.6%; that may not seem like much, but the result was 6 more strikeouts last year in 160 more plate appearances. That is development you love to see. If Pittsburgh is ever going to field a competitive baseball team again, he's going to be a part of it. Another guy that had an underrated year, though the average may fall next year, is Rickie Weeks. He still strikes out an inordinate amount, but that type of power/speed/discipline combo is always nice to have (even though he didn't run much last year). I'm also not sure if Billy Butler gets the love he deserves. If he can ever turn a few more of those doubles into home runs, there are going to be people who confuse him with Mike Sweeney. -
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 20, 2011 -> 10:02 PM) Wow. The Yankees think he has something left in the tank. I won't miss him, but I'm also not crazy about Teahen out there. Isn't Danks ready to be a backup outfielder? How come every other sport promotes young guys quickly but not baseball? Let.Danks.Play. Andruw Jones is still good and would have been great with the Sox this year too. As is, Williams didn't feel he was necessary or worth upwards of $3 mill, though he will almost certainly be worth that. He still absolutely destroys lefties. Jordan Danks isn't ready to hit in the majors; he's barely ready to hit in AAA. He's striking out an absolute ton, and that wouldn't decrease in the majors. Baseball is different because success in baseball is not derived from talent as much as it is from knowledge. If you run a 4.3 40, can run a crisp route, and catch the ball, you can be a receiver in the NFL. There aren't many guys who can do that, but those that can will play right away. However, being able to hit a 4-seam fastball, a 2-seam fastball, a changeup, a curveball, a slider, a split-finger takes a hell of a lot more than talent, and that's not including hitting the ball with authority. Beyond that, baseball is very much a game based on rhythm and repeating mechanics, so instead of calling up young players to take a spot on the bench, they will have them stay in the minors to continue to develop by getting consistent at-bats rather than playing once or twice a week. Jordan Danks, if he is going to make it as a hitter, will need more seasoning in the minors. I imagine once he runs out of options, the Sox will call up him to be a 4th outfielder (if they don't trade him or designate him for assignment first), but they are in no rush to do so.

I understand that it's coming from a deer and not a human, but how can they say this and then allow athletes to take any number of other supplements? The logic behind that is flawed.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jan 20, 2011 -> 04:44 PM) It's hard to not hate the player though. Because the argument will always be that he needs to play up to his contract, even though it's not fault he was given a contract that he had no chance of actually earning. Actually, it's going to be easy not to hate the player because Teahen is a very likable guy. It's not his fault that Williams and company gave the extension And what is he supposed to say when approached with a deal that will give him financial security for life? "No, I'm not going to be worth this contract." C'mon. People should be upset with Williams and solely Williams. And as a bench player, Teahen won't be bad. He's a decent hitter and can play multiple positions.
-
Yeah I think all Ozzie means is that by simply anointing Morel as the 3B is a slap in the face, because Morel will have to earn it. I don't think that's really a problem.

QUOTE (FlaSoxxJim @ Jan 20, 2011 -> 06:58 AM) That is wild. I used to sell beer from a stand at Bears games in college and waiting for the head to go down to top off the cups took a lot of time and backedvthe lines up. That device would have tripled the pour speed. The gaskets on the cups have to be a bit of special engineering I assume. I wonder what that does to the unit price of each cup. Hopefully they make 10 billion of those cups so that it only adds about a cent to each cup

Howie Kendrick is a great example. There were about a million different people who said that Howie Kendrick would have a batting title by now (or that he would have atleast competed for one), and while he has hit OK, especially for his position on the field, he just has not taken that next step and probably never will.

QUOTE (Controlled Chaos @ Jan 20, 2011 -> 10:50 AM) I don't doubt he chose the Sox as his team to root for. I just doubt that he is truly a fan. Not saying it's a big deal...just my opinion. Just because a guy doesn't know anything about the team doesn't mean he's not a fan. When I was 17, I went to a Sox/Twins game in Minneapolis and even though I knew most of the players on the roster, I didn't recognize them or their numbers, and the only players I really recognized were the main hitters in the lineup. It doesn't mean I suddenly wasn't a fan, and at that point I was spending about 25 hours a week on Soxtalk. I don't care for the guy, but the guy is a Sox fan. I can't think of any reason you'd wear a White Sox jacket and hat for political reasons, considering the negative connotations the White Sox logo has with non-sports fans.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 20, 2011 -> 07:50 AM) If they have rotation room though, it makes a lot of sense for them to grab a fringe starter or two. Not only might they get lucky and get a good season out of them and gets some extra wins, but they can also deal them at the deadline to whoever needs pitching depth As of right now, they have Jeff Francis, Luke Hochevar, Bruce Chen, Kyle Davies, Vin Mazzaro, Noel Arguelles, Aaron Crow, and Sean O'Sullivan who can all start games. Bringing in another pitcher with that excess money would be a waste of a resource. Their pitching isn't good, but they have quite a few guys who they need to see if they can prove something.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 20, 2011 -> 11:10 AM) So you guys who are expressing doubts...Bill James is likely basing these numbers on some sort of historic average for how far guys' performance drops from coming up 1 level to the big leagues at his age. If there aren't guys who come up and immediately rake, then where would those numbers come from? There are clearly some guys who would drag it down horribly (Brian Anderson) by coming up and sucking immediately, his prediction has to be somewhere in-between the good and the bad right? If he can keep his strikeout rate at about 16%, he's got a shot, but that seems to be quite high for a person who is supposedly going to have a high average. I see him more around .260/.310/.415 myself.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Jan 19, 2011 -> 11:05 PM) Lot of talk about this in KC. People are furious at Glass for inheriting the 12 million bucks. Also Meche is getting praised for not reporting to ST and complaining of the sore arm and still getting to keep the 12 mill. It'd be hard for many people to not do just that. What's your take on Mr. Meche giving KC the 12 million instead of just showing up for spring training with a rag arm, being unable to pitch and being put on the DL?? My take is it's pretty f***ing commendable of Meche. And the owner, Glass, should purchase whatever remaining arms their are on the market, cause KC's starters are pure s***. Pretty much all the remaining arms on the market are pure s***, and they aren't going to compete this year. They may as well take their lumps and bring guys up throughout the year instead of spending the additional money on guys who aren't going to do anything for them.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jan 19, 2011 -> 02:36 PM) By most every single metric I've seen we were a lot worse. Doesn't help when you've got two of the worst defensive players on the planet on one team. One is obviously Quentin. You referring to Teahen as the second? Because he isn't going to be starting. And you can't be referencing Konerko, because UZR doesn't do Konerko's glove justice, considering it doesn't count how many throws he digs out.
