QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 1, 2011 -> 12:19 PM) I'm projecting to 2012. Well if Kubiak and company f*** up again, then you go to a completely new coaching staff.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 31, 2010 -> 05:35 PM) Yeah. I still can't believe they did it for Dunn. The day we sign two major free agents in one offseason is the day Juan Pierre becomes a better baseball player than Carlos Gonzalez. The White Sox have given out the 4th and 7th biggest contracts this offseason. I would say that qualifies as 2 major free agent signings.

QUOTE (mmmmmbeeer @ Dec 29, 2010 -> 08:54 PM) I only saw Nova last year against the Sox but that kid has a future....very impressive. If the Sox could get him, which they won't, but if they did it'd be a steal. You know, I remember thinking that exact same thing when I saw Luis Mendoza pitch against the Sox in 2008 - 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 8 K. Fastball with good sinking movement, solid breaking ball working as the offspeed, and the ability to hit about 94 with his straight fastball. Of course, his next start was against the White Sox - 4 IP, 9 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 4 K and a homer allowed. Needless to say, he didn't win that game, and he's been pretty terrible throughout his career. Can't let one game make a lasting impression on you. The Sox have historically struggled against pitchers they've faced for the first time, and though they were better last year, seeing a guy for the first time is still going to be a bit difficult. His minor league numbers are OK, and I've seen people say he could be a middle of the rotation starter. Doesn't mean he can't be more, but he can certainly bust still too. I know that I wouldn't want him to be the main piece in any deal I made, unless it was trading like Mark Teahen. -

This team is pretty much set - perhaps a minor trade or small free agent signings - unless someone drastically overpays. It's basically to the point where we just need to settle down and wait for February. -
The Rams are really the only NFC West team that has a shot in hell at winning a game in the postseason. The Seahawks are probably going to be without Hasselbeck and they have absolutely no running game at all. The Rams atleast have a talented QB, even if he is a rookie, they have weapons offensively, and they are pretty solid defensively. Even then, the Saints are really, really good and it would take a minor miracle for anybody to beat them.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 27, 2010 -> 10:17 AM) I think Infante is 99% sure going to get a tryout as the last reliever spot this year. That still leaves 1 spot open though. 2 if you count Sale as part of the rotation. You can almost certainly count on the Sox bringing in a lefty. Byrdak came up like a million times previously but nothing ever came of it. Perhaps that is an option now. I also think Bruney has a legitimate shot at making the team too, especially if he shows any semblance of control.
-
Jenks didn't just express disappointment with not being with the White Sox anymore. He also said that Ozzie Guillen doesn't know how to manage a bullpen (argue all you want, I think he handled Jenks as well as he could have), he seems to think he wasn't trusted coming out of the bullpen when really it was a matter of over-trusting Jenks, and he wonders why he has to fight for a job when he struggled like crazy all year. He took some pretty significant parting shots at the White Sox organization. It wasn't right for Oney to make the comments he did, but there was going to be verbal retaliation of some type. Perhaps Williams and/or Guillen will say something else too. Hopefully they keep it civil while putting Jenks in his place, perhaps something along the lines of telling people he was non-tendered for a reason.

QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 27, 2010 -> 06:25 PM) I'd rather have him than T.O. Ocho is just a free spirit. But he's never in real trouble and wants to win. He would be a great guy with the fans and charities in Chicago. You just described Terrell Owens more than you did Ochocinco.
-
Yeah. I defended Jenks in this thread merely to show that someone can believe him. I certainly don't believe he is going to be that good this year. Maybe he will, or maybe the Red Sox will make adjustments with him, but from what I saw last year, he wouldn't have made it in AAA.
-
QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Dec 26, 2010 -> 10:58 PM) Good point on not wanting another multi-year contract for a reliever, but I'm not sure Infante is the guy, maybe we there is a trade coming. Will be fun to watch. They may as well go with Infante. They have 4 good relievers right now plus Tony Pena, so I'd say go cheap with the last 2 spots and if the team needs to make a change come midseason, do it then.

QUOTE (gatnom @ Dec 27, 2010 -> 12:25 AM) Brent Morel is Chris Getz part 2. That's a pretty mediocre comparison. Getz isn't that good defensively, isn't a good hitter, has no power, and doesn't really show patience. He is a hustle and heart kind of player who is best served on the bench. Brent Morel has shown throughout the minors that he's a good hitter, has showed doubles power, and hit a couple balls in the in the season that haven't really landed yet. Basically, Brent Morel can be a capable starting player whereas Chris Getz really can't.

did you see how badly Houston got Tebowned today? Man, talk about total Tebownage

It's worth the risk, but there is the possibility that he contributes as much this year as Chien-Ming Wang did for the Nationals last year.

I think Viciedo to the OF is very, very possible. Pierre is a free agent after this season, so there's one spot; Quentin is going to be quite expensive next season, so unless he shows that he can be semi-capable defensively and show a bit more consistency (Joe Morgan quality analysis right there), he's going to be gone too, so that's 2 spots. The Sox don't exactly have any outfielders knocking on the doors either. Morel looks like he could be great defensively and solid offensively, so you are going to want that glove remaining in the infield. And, until a huge hole comes up and rears its ugly head, Viciedo isn't going to go in any deals either, as this team is pretty solid up and down right now. They won't deal Viciedo for a bench player and, if they trade him for a reliever, they damn well better be getting a top 5 reliever in the game. That leaves starting pitching and anywhere else offensively, and Viciedo can (probably) fill about 5 of those spots, so you are basically looking at an injury up the middle or to the rotation if they are to trade Viciedo.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 24, 2010 -> 09:59 AM) So when were ranked in the bottom 5 by every minor league publication there is I'm supposed to believe we have depth? What the hell do you want with depth? Players that are above replacement level? Because if they did that, they would not have the team they have right now. You are seriously sacrificing a lot by wanting more. Do you disagree with the fact that the White Sox have a replacement (or perhaps better) player behind every single position on the diamond? With the exception of outfield and starting pitching of course. I don't even see how that's an arguable point. If the Sox were to lose Rios, Konerko, or Dunn for an extended period of time, odds are the Sox would be f'ed anyways. Not comparing him directly, but if the Twins lost Mauer for an extended period of time, what they hell are they going to do? (again, I'm not comparing them directly, merely the importance of them) I have never said the system was good. No one has. All I've said was that they have the depth to handle an injury. Do you want a backup for the backup?
-
Seriously. Some of it is on the receivers, but Clausen is so mfing bad. Can't throw the deep ball, can't throw the intermediate ball, hell, can't throw the short ball, and he can't move once pressure gets to him. How the hell is he going to succeed in the NFL? I remember reading the Scott Wright staked his reputation on Jimmy Clausen being better than Sam Bradford. Uhhh...oops.

QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Dec 21, 2010 -> 11:11 AM) Peavy WAS helping the team. He was dominant while he was injured. The guy's lat was hanging on by a thread. 15-30 days wasn't gonna make a difference and earlier surgery wouldn't have saved him for 2010. He tried to pitch through it to help the team. There was no replacing him if he did shut it down and he knew it. Forget the start before it gave out. What about the first time he felt it? Perhaps all of that detachment occurred within that 4-6 week period. If he tells the team about it ahead of time, he takes 10 days off, lets the muscle heal itself, and he's good to go. If it were late October, like game 5, Peavy had been pitching well, and the series was tied at 2 - sure, I understand, blow out your f***ing elbow for that s***. World Series' don't come often. When it first came up, in like early June...you're absolutely crazy to defend Peavy's decision, especially considering Peavy is criticizing himself for it.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 23, 2010 -> 08:06 AM) Really, no it isn't. If he gets to the FA market right now, no injuries, he's probably a $17-ish million a year pitcher. Absolutely. Pitcher A - 3.48 ERA, 1.235 WHIP, 188 IP, 1 HR/9, 2.2 BB/9, 7.2 K/9, last 3 years before signing as free agent Pitcher B - 3.61 ERA, 1.241 WHIP, 203 IP, 0.9 HR/9, 3 BB/9, 7 K/9, last 3 years Pitcher A is John Lackey, the bonafide #2 starter who got a 5 year, $80 mill deal from the Red Sox. He went on to produce garbage this past season and become a relative unknown. I imagine him closer to a 4.00 ERA this year, but it's worth a note. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 23, 2010 -> 08:38 AM) And probably in the seven year range too. No way. The only pitchers teams will give 7 years to are those pitchers that are above and beyond the rest, and those teams that can actually afford it. The Yankees are about the only team I can think of that might give 7 years to Danks, and I actually doubt they would. Danks is a 5, maybe 6 year pitcher at the very, very, most, and if he has no interest in signing an extension with the Sox for 5 years, then the Sox can trade him next offseason.

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Dec 24, 2010 -> 06:38 AM) Right, I'm assuming it was at night and if someone is jaywalking its hard to see them even sober at times... for him to get similar treatment to the guy from the Adenhart case would be ridiculous. It was like 5 in the morning, but it's still pretty damn hard to see him at that point in time. And considering it was 5 in the morning, it's assumed that Stallworth had waited until he thought he was sober, so there was atleast an attempt to be responsible. As Jas mentioned, the dude who killed Adenhart (and 2 others) was absolutely bombed, because it was like the peak of the night. Drinking and driving is stupid. You think the worst you can get slapped with is a slap on the wrist, lose your license, maybe spend a couple nights in jail and then BAM, you're in prison. Just stupid, stupid, stupid.

White Sox Off-Season Catch All Thread

And if you increase that .294 BABIP to anywhere near his career total (.320), or the roughly .310 it was over the previous 4 years, that OBP would increase right along side the HBP, and he'd probably get another double or triple out of the deal too. I really think people are making too big of a deal out of the HBP. If people are going to pitch Pierre inside, he's going to lean into the pitch. I guess I didn't watch the games, but I have a feeling they weren't hitting Pierre square in the back or ribs every time he went to the plate, so it was simply a matter of finding a way on base, and rather than swinging at a pitch, he understood that he needed to get on base and did whatever he could to do so. Juan Pierre isn't a good player, and I am not a fan, but he's honestly not a problem. People that b**** about him are seriously just trying to find a scapegoat before the season starts. He's going to hit around .270-.300, he's going to put up an OBP around .330-.350, he's not going to hit for power, he's not going to throw me out on a single to left field after my leadoff double, and he's going to catch pretty much everything in his area. There's plenty of good and bad to go around about his game, but he is quite seriously the least of the worries. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 23, 2010 -> 09:15 PM) That's a lame excuse. A good farm is as much about depth as it is star power. Oh horses***. The only place the Sox don't have enough depth are starting pitching and outfield. Some will argue that Sale is an option as a starter, and quite frankly, he is until the Sox decide otherwise. If not, they'll sign minor league free agents that will be capable of putting up a 6.00 ERA and 5 innings a start...that's all you can ask for out of "depth," isn't it? Outfielders are a problem too, and the same exact scenario presents itself - the Sox will be able to sign MLFAs that will be able to produce a .675-.725 OPS. Again, "depth." Not a starter. Beyond those two spots, the Sox have enough [young] guys who can play. Viciedo can play both 1B and 3B, Escobar can play both 2B and SS, Flowers can play C, and there are a zillion different guys in this system and in every system that can fill in as a reliever. Unless you still consider Jordan Danks as a legitimate prospect, there isn't anybody who can replace Alex Rios while giving you a glimpse into the future. But if Alex Rios gets hurt for 3 weeks, Danks (or anybody else) will fill in just fine. If Joe Mauer goes down for 3 weeks, who in the bluef*** are the Twins going to replace him with? What about Miguel Cabrera? Depth is there to give a team replacement (or slightly above replacement) level production at a bargain price...the Sox will be able to do that. It won't be a sexy name that makes this list, and it won't be a sexy name that is available for trade, but the Sox have enough pieces. --- I love FanGraphs, and it's an incredible site. But considering they downgrade Viciedo and rank him as the #4 prospect...doesn't that throw up a red flag? You've seen Viciedo, and you know he has Vladimir Guerrero type potential. He also has a Wily Mo Pena type floor. Do you honestly believe that Dayan Viciedo is the 4th best prospect in this system? I know I don't. I understand the boom/bust potential, but that potential alone should increase his rating above Scott Brosius and a player who has never played a full season of minor league baseball, don't you think? I'm not arguing that the Sox system is good - it's far from - but if the Sox lose someone important for a long period of time, they're f***ed anyways, because ANYBODY is (save the Red Sox and Yankees, who can just buy more talent). You are freaking out about this, when it's been known for quite some time that the White Sox deal any minor league talent they have for upgrades at the MLB level, while they'll be able to replace anybody over a short period for dirt cheap, pretty much as well as anybody else can. Settle.the.f***.down.
