QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 08:01 AM) It's worth checking his splits, btw. Edwin Jackson was fantastic in the month of August, as we all saw. But everyone sorta turned the TV off in September, and so did he. His month of September looked a whole lot, statistically, like his first half in fact; 4.93 ERA, 1.38 WHIP. And looking at arbitrary separation points can lead to inflated values. Edwin Jackson had what I would classify as 1 bad start with the White Sox. On September 11th, Jackson put up a line of 5 IP, 13 H, 6 ER, 1 BB, 3 K. Excluding that start, Jackson put up: 2.70 ERA 1.10 WHIP 2.2 BB/9 9.5 K/9 1 HR/9 His September stats, excluding that number, are 4.05 ERA 1.17 WHIP 2.4 BB/9 7.8 K/9 1.35 HR/9 If he goes all of next year and only has 1 bad start out of every 11 like he did, he's going to be in contention for the Cy Young.

QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Dec 13, 2010 -> 09:42 AM) I dunno though, she's preeeeetty hot. 1 year, $550k couldn't hurt, right? Adam Dunn would be relegated to backup 1B/DH. Kotsay is your everyday starter and opening day starting pitcher as well. Couldn't hurt...just like one line of cocaine couldn't hurt. -
First semester I've ever taken 18 credits, and I think it's the easiest finals week of my college career. Group meeting for my senior capstone course (in 7 hours, but I'm pretty prepared for it) 3 non-cumulative final exams (two of which will be a cake walk) 1 3-4 page take home essay for one of the exams Complete a portfolio for my poetry class The portfolio is going to be the worst part of it, but that's only because it's time consuming and tedious; the work itself should be pretty easy. I think I should be able to knock it out if I give a good 6-8 hours to it.

Multiple Sources: Sox actively shopping Quentin

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 12, 2010 -> 06:02 AM) You were torn apart for this undeniable fact? Yeah, I think you were one of them, when I mentioned Teahen plus a relief prospect for Lyon. I obviously know that Teahen is valueless, but including a relief prospect along with him for a good but not great reliever atleast might work. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 12, 2010 -> 06:49 AM) Teahen and Jones worth 2 to 3 times that of Quentin? Really? Quentin mashes RHP. His OPS against RHP blows Teahen's OPS vs. RHP away, and if you saw Mark Teahen play RF, he isn't a big upgrade defensively over Quentin either, in fact, he may be worse. And don't even mention they will make approximately the same amount of money.Jones vs. LHP and defensively is obviously better at least all around, but he's also had 3 or 4 months in a row for 3 straight seasons where he did absolutely nothing. Depending on whose metrics you want to use - baseballreference or FanGraphs - Andruw Jones by himself, in limited playing time, was worth 15-20 times that of Carlos Quentin last year. I don't think Quentin is THAT bad in the outfield, but he is not good defensively, and that does cost the Sox runs and games. I also think you are being delusional if you believe that Mark Teahen is worse defensively in the outfield than Carlos Quentin. I don't see anything that suggests that at all. If you compare them 3B to RF, then sure, you have an argument, but that's about your only argument, and that'd be even more ridiculous. Quite frankly, Carlos Quentin is Carlos Lee/Jermaine Dye/Adam Dunn bad defensively. That affects his game and overall value tremendously. I would say he is obviously quite a bit better offensively, but he should be DHing or playing 1B for someone. You know that I don't think the Sox should trade Quentin unless they can get proper value (and I don't believe they should because they won't get proper value). It's not ridiculous to think that a Mark Teahen/Andruw Jones platoon could be more effective overall though. -

QUOTE (joeynach @ Dec 12, 2010 -> 03:37 AM) OMG if they move CQ becuase there is a belief that Jones/Teahen can do an adequate job in replacing him, both Offense and defense, then KW is stone cold crazy. You would be lucky to get any sort of league avg production on all fronts out of that fantastic duo. I think you are very, very wrong. Teahen is an OK hitter - probably .750 OPS or so - and grades out at average to below average defensively in RF. Andruw Jones is a good power hitter, but not much more offensively, and he is great defensively in RF. Carlos Quentin is a good, though very inconsistent, hitter, and grades out at bad to horrendous defensively. I don't believe that it is wrong to believe that Teahen/Jones can outproduce Quentin; in fact, I believe strongly that Teahen and Jones can, overall, be worth 2-3 times that of Quentin. However, considering every potential circumstance, the White Sox would have to get good to great value on Quentin and they must be getting good value on Andruw Jones. -

QUOTE (J.Reedfan8 @ Dec 12, 2010 -> 05:23 AM) I think me and DA are the only two on this site that was game on dealing Rios (since his value is very high right now) but isn't Teahen signed for three more years? (I usually would look this up myself, but I'm about to go to bed) I would think KW has got to be shopping him as plan a. (though he'll definitely have to add cash like the Linebrink deal) I think Peavy has a buy-out clause after 2012, though I could be wrong on that. Teahen is only signed for 2 more years, and as was mentioned (and for which I was torn apart, even though I fully understand it), Teahen represents negative value on the trade market. And just because you and Dick were the only ones who mentioned dealing Rios, it doesn't mean that others don't believe in the plausibility of it; I have too. Rios is a good player, and this past season has helped re-establish his value on the open market, and the Sox could get good value for him at this point, and in the grand scheme of things, it would be considered a huge addition to the franchise - not giving up anything to get whatever it is that the Sox would get. The fact of the matter is that he represents a monstrosity of an upgrade on anyone that the Sox currently have in CF. Williams can be shopping him all he wants to, but the Sox absolutely must be getting a CF from somewhere else before they even consider dealing him. -

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 11, 2010 -> 11:18 PM) I guess I didn't see that fact. I thought Andruw looked pretty good last season. Much better than the couple years prior. He was in better shape, more productive, and moved a lot better. Just my opinion, however. I don't think there's any question that Andruw Jones is a quality player, it's simply the fact that he breaks down so quickly at this point. For every 2 games he starts, he's on the shelf for 1 game, and if you try and ride him as the every day starter, it's going to take a toll on his ability to perform and you won't get anything out of him. I want Andruw Jones back if he can be signed to a reasonable deal because he really is a great player, but you can't break the bank to bring him in and you can't count on him to play for an extended period of time. -
I love this team more and more every day. Words simply can't describe how awesome that is.

Again, why would the Rays want Carlos Quentin, especially for Garza? If they are going to bring in a guy who plays no defense, they'll bring him in from outside the organization and they'll almost certainly do it for less than $5 million. I also don't know why the Rangers would give up prospects for Matt Garza when #1 - they are still very much in the running for Cliff Lee #2 - if they trade for a starting pitcher, I think it's much more likely to be Greinke than Garza -

QUOTE (joeynach @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 06:57 PM) When Jared Mitchell is ready you trade CQ. When your only other RF is Mark Teahen you keep CQ. When CQ averages 30 HR and 100 RBI you dont trade him for mediocre relief help. Quentin will almost certainly have reached free agent status "when" Mitchell is ready. And there is no guarantee that Mitchell is going to be anything. He hasn't played a game in AA yet (the AFL is advanced, but it is also a shortened season) and he's still striking out quite a bit. -

In trying to think of teams that will be spending atleast a little bit, need a ton of help offensively, and might have a piece or two the Sox like, I come up with Pittsburgh, and specifically Hanrahan and Morton. -

QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 05:05 PM) Quentin and specs for Garza goddamnit. Then deal a starter for OF AND RP help. Trading Q for relievers alone scares the s*** out of me. I don't know why the Rays would be interested in Quentin considering they are cutting costs and they like their players to have some ability to play defense. But yes, trading Quentin for relievers alone is a scary proposition. His value is low right now and unless you are talking about one of the premier set-up men in the game, it just doesn't seem worth it. -
QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 01:28 PM) I think it is important to note that Kevin Correia's brother was killed in a hiking accident in May, which effectively ended any hopes of a good season for Correia. He is a good pitcher and up to last season, was deserving of the contract he received. Take away 2010 (which I think he wishes could happen) and he's a solid 4/5 guy in the NL. I remember reading that article. He and his brother were very close, and it tore him apart. Hopefully he is able to focus more this year.

Phil Coke is going to be used as a starter in Detroit this year. Didn't know that. Now I do.

QUOTE (since56 @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 08:14 AM) With Sale/Pena as a starter the pen is .........well thin at best. Quentin's bat makes the lineup awesome with Dunn,Konerko, Rios and the rest. Besides who will play right if we trade him, and what could we get for a guy who could have a breakout year. Teahan, Flowers, Viciedo, Lillibridge, De Aza, have to be the trade bait to shore up the pen. Any reliever you get for 3, maybe 4, out of those 5 guys you listed at the end will almost certainly be no better than anything the White Sox currently have in their system, and that goes doubly for Lillibridge and De Aza. Williams is going to be a little more creative than that.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 07:58 AM) He finally got stuff figured out after June, but you get my point. It wasn't just the league adapting to him. Absolutely no argument from me there. Even if it is the league adapting to him, he can adapt right back at them and start improving his weaknesses at the plate too. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 07:46 AM) Those are an interesting selection of names you've got there, because most of them I can give reasons why they started struggling totally unrelated to the league adapting. Beckham has some weird mental things going on and his swing was screwed up all last year. Bobby Crosby couldn't stay healthy to save his life. DTrain's fastball weakened and his offspeed stuff became less effective. Eh, I'd say that Beckham's .310/.369/.516/.885 line in his final 238 plate appearances would suggest that it wasn't screwed up all year. Just have to hope that the hand injury doesn't rear its head this year. -
Jesus, they trade JJ Hardy, not Joe f***ing Mauer.

QUOTE (joeynach @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 05:11 PM) I wouldnt overlook the league adjust factor after a players 1st season.......says Gordon Beckham, Zach Duke, Dontrelle Willis, Bobby Crosby, etc And I wouldn't overlook the fact that Sergio Santos had barely pitched prior to last season, and he had no idea what his future held in December of last year. At this point in time, he now has a full offseason to work and study pitching, to hone his control and command, and to do any other number of things. And I also wouldn't overlook the fact that, besides ANY of that, Sergio Santos is a relief pitcher who has a 95 MPH fastball and a ridiculous slider. Zach Duke surely didn't have that, and once Dontrelle Willis lost the ability to control the strike zone, he got knocked around. Bobby Crosby is an awful, awful player (I don't even understand the reason for bringing it up...he hit 22 homers his rookie year but wasn't good otherwise, he was OK his second year but got hurt, and he's been busy getting hurt or sucking at baseball ever since that point). Beckham struggled, as young players tend to do, but he bounced back pretty quickly and had a monstrous second half. -
Crawford to Boston, $142 Million, 7 Years

Assuming I get enough time in the next couple days - I should have quite a bit on Saturday - I plan on diving into the Crawford signing a little bit. I have a few points that I want to talk about right now but I have to do a little bit of research on them before I state them and make a complete jackass out of myself. -

QUOTE (joeynach @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 02:12 PM) Achillies heel anyone. Seriously without the ability to have a complete shut down bullpen this team will go no where. It could be. I think the offense will be good enough that if the bullpen falters, the offense will win their fair share of games and allow Williams to find the proper bullpen arm. The backend is still strong on paper with Thornton, Sale, and Santos. Maybe lightning strikes and the rest of the pieces fall into place. Who knows? But don't trade a highly valued piece for a bullpen arm at this point in time. There are always bullpen arms available and they can be acquired at virtually any time.
