  1. I think the White Sox position would be quite attractive. Since Bevington was fired after essentially 2.5 seasons, the White Sox have had 4 managers in 20 years, with Renteria just finishing his first season. Excluding Renteria, since he just concluded his first year, that's 3 managers in 19 seasons. What other organization, with such little in the way of results, has averaged 6 years per manager? This isn't like Miami, where you might lose your job if you sneeze on the mound while removing a pitcher. Job loyalty does go a long ways, so if Girardi were looking for job security, he couldn't find a better spot.
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 31, 2017 -> 11:42 AM) Are there any good strategic managers? Maddon has been called out and Girardi called out this postseason for dumb decisions. Francona's team flopped. I just wondered if there are any good strategic managers. Ozzie seemed to have as good a feel for the game as any except for the Sunday lineups. The two remaining managers are both great strategically. Both have had blunders, but no one is perfect. Ozzie Guillen was great because he deflected blame and controversy away from his players onto himself, but that eventually caught up to him and then he no longer cared and gave up on his team. He showed in Miami that he was done managing. I would be beyond surprised if he ever managed again other than in a short-term capacity.
  3. The odds of me being named manager and the odds of Ozzie being rehired are probably similar. The dude wore out his welcome, and he is not a very good strategic manager.
  4. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 30, 2017 -> 11:59 AM) I would MUCH rather us just give out a $300 million contract to a guy than to trade for one AND give up key guys to do it. I'd also like the guy to have a better injury history than Stanton and not a have a short term opt out as well. Especially because we know that Hahn would be the one negotiating the contract, and I think he is second to none when it comes to contract negotiations and structuring.
  5. A suspension makes sense, but I think Astros would be OK without him for a game too. This isn't losing a game changer like Altuve, Correa, or Springer. Those would be huge losses. For a game though, you try your luck with either Beltran or Maybin with Gonzalez or Gattis moving over to 1B.
  6. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 20, 2017 -> 08:05 PM) I wouldn't be too worried about pop times. SB are becoming extinct. If he can frame, call a decent game and block pitches, with his walks and power, it will more than make up for a slow time to 2nd. There were 2527 SBs in the majors this year, which is right around 84 per team. That is down from the peak average of right around 3200-3300 from the 80s and 90s, but I wouldn't say it's becoming extinct.
  7. QUOTE (ptatc @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 05:58 PM) Baker is fluent in spanish. This surprises me but doesn't at the same time. He's a good manager, even if his handling of a pitching staff could improve. He's only 68, which also surprises me, because he's been around forever.
  8. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 04:37 PM) He put up a positive WAR in 80 games (not a massive positive) and had a $750K salary. How is that a disaster? The disaster was probably more of the fact that we thought a $750K FA signing would fill the void Ozzie asked Erstad to fill. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 26, 2017 -> 04:43 PM) Ozzie was the disaster, not Erstad. Mostly this. If they had used Erstad appropriately and he had been a 4th OF, backup 1B, and pinch hitter, I wouldn't have cared, but I knew he was going to be the starter over Brian Anderson, who was clearly a superior talent, even when the Sox got to a point when they were out of contention. Instead, he was used as a regular and it was as bad as I thought it would be.
  9. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Oct 5, 2017 -> 01:44 PM) Might be a good off season topic, most reviled former Sox. I'd have to put La Roche up there near the top. Darin Erstad. I still have the PM I sent Kalapse after he was signed, basically saying "this is going to be a f***ing disaster."
  10. The 5 home runs hit in extra innings last night set a Major League record for most in extra innings, regular or postseason.
  11. QUOTE (ewokpelts @ Oct 25, 2017 -> 07:07 PM) byes are for lesser sports. like football. Or baseball technically gives the majority of its teams a bye for the first round of the playoffs.
  12. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Oct 25, 2017 -> 06:22 PM) Back to back 1 game death matches sounds awesome. Yea it's unfair for many reasons...but that's what you get you s***ty wildcard team. Win your division next year to avoid the gauntlet. Like take off work awesome.
  13. QUOTE (Dam8610 @ Oct 25, 2017 -> 04:38 PM) 12 team format works fine for the NFL, and would be a preferred method to me as opposed to the current 10 team format. Give the two best teams in each league the equivalent of a bye (which will make all those September games matter more) with a best of 3 wild card round for teams 3-6. Then proceed as current format. I do not think a best of 3 Wild Card round works. It's the most fair, but people don't care about fair in the playoffs, because those one and done games are awesome. If they did expand it, like you are suggesting, then I would say you have 4 play in games, which would double the amount of drama from the Wild Card games. Two divisions in each league, two division winners and four wild card winners. That's 6 playoff teams from each league and the Wild Card teams play to get in, 3v6 and 4v5.
  14. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 25, 2017 -> 11:59 AM) Has anyone talked about Michael Brantley? While I know we'd like to have LF for our multiple hitters that have no positions, it could be an interesting candidate if the contract price is right. Now, if his range suddenly got better from all his injuries, we could even try to say he's a CFer! I like the idea of Michael Brantley. I also initially read this as Milton Bradley and almost s*** myself.
  15. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 24, 2017 -> 08:40 PM) Pretty bad example. People hated the Myers deal. Not because of devenski maybe, but still. They hated the Myers deal because of who Myers is, not what he did on a baseball field. He was a perfectly adequate reliever, especially for the price the Sox paid. It just so happens to be that one of those organizational depth arms they gave up has one of the best changeups in all of baseball.
  16. Over the last 17 years, dating back to when the Sox "got good," I think they've traded away all of like 3-5 prospects that really hurt at all. I'm just wondering why no one here is b****ing about the Sox trading for Brett Myers in 2012. Chris Devenski has only put up 4.3 WAR over his first two seasons as a reliever. There are times you trade away prospects who are toolsheds, and 9 times out of 10 those guys flare out almost immediately. Not having Tatis sucks, but it is what it is.
  17. I don't think the Dodgers will trade him. More than any other team in the league, they value their depth. Even if he only plays 60 or 80 games, that'll be worth it to them.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 17, 2017 -> 02:37 PM) Another pretty radical, yet common sense idea for expansion... Add another team to the NYC market. If you divide the entire metro area by just the Mets and Yankees, it is still MUCH bigger than pretty much any other teams solo market place. Dividing that market up again might do more for rebalancing finances in baseball than anything else. Just call them the New Jersey something or others. Hockey has 3 teams in the NYC area, I'm sure baseball could do the same.
  19. QUOTE (ron883 @ Oct 14, 2017 -> 06:37 PM) What intangibles does Avi bring? I don't value intangibles very much. I agree abreu is a great clubhouse leader. But I think you sell high on him and avi if you get the right offer. I think you trade anyone in all of baseball for the right offer, but the right offer rarely comes forward.
  20. Since when is .314/.383/.480 a good year for a AAA 1B in the PCL? That has to translate to something like .270/.330/.420, which is a replacement level player. Beyond that, he only played 89 games, so either they were platooning him or he was hurt, which is also something he did frequently. Sorry to bring up Ravelo again out of the blue, but that was a mind-boggling name drop.
  21. I had forgotten about Yasmany Tomas until reading a Longenhagen article today. If they had a decent spot for him, that's a guy with the talent to be a player, but I don't know where they'd play him.
  22. QUOTE (bmags @ Oct 12, 2017 -> 11:16 AM) Man I went through the FA list and none stuck out beyond what's mentioned. I think my best hope for a real pick me up could be rule 5, which could be very interesting this year. That said. I like the options mentioned for C. I really don't see a Position player i'd care for. Fine with going hunting for people like Willy Garcia and Liriano again (and Asche). It will be a sad day when Cody Asche leaves the organization.
