QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 17, 2010 -> 06:41 PM) Given that his future is likely that of a utilityman I believe this is the last thing on their minds. I know. I tried to make it seem like a ridiculous plausibility. He's not Gordon Beckham.

Not that it's really worth trying, but why wouldn't Nix clear waivers? It's not like he's an uber-talented player who hasn't lived up to his potential - he got into BA's top 100 prospects one time, and it was #94 in 2004. He's pretty mediocre, and I can't see why another team would suddenly take a chance on him. As I recall, the Rockies DFA'ed him and no team claimed him, and then the Sox signed him to a contract. The only real value Nix has is as a platoon partner, and I seem to recall that his minor league career indicates that last year may have been a fluke. And it's probably not that they are trying to save time on Retherford's arbitration clock...it just might be that the club feels that Nix is more qualified to be a backup infielder than Retherford, that Retherford needs some more seasoning and they want to see him play a few games at more positions to determine what he can and can't play in games that don't really matter, and perhaps they are hoping Nix can turn into a player who looks like he could be a .260/.340/.410 everyday 2B with a great glove so they can trade him for a decent prospect or package up for a good player during the season or over the offseason. So maybe, in some small way, it has to do with their fear of losing Nix over the waiver wire, but really, I think there is quite a bit more to the equation.

"You dead, dawg," says an angry voice. "I ain't even bulls-------. Your kids, too." keep him away, and move this to the Diamond Club. Dukes is a total piece of s***.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 16, 2010 -> 09:24 PM) The intro of Alive would be great as would the intro of Why Go. Dayman would be my #1 choice however. Let's just cut to it and say that a ton of s*** off of Ten would make for great at-bat songs.

QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Mar 16, 2010 -> 12:30 AM) I should be more specific. He is not showing a lot of that natural stroke that was advertised by his agent. That's all. To label him the Babe Ruth of Cuba was a gross overstatement. He never faced MLB quality pitching either so yeah maybe we should give him a break. But so far he is not worth the 2.5 mil a year investment. League minimum yes. He feels like the real life Pedro Cerrano. -
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 16, 2010 -> 01:10 AM) I can dig your post, though some I'll respectfully disagree with. I highlighted this part, cause you might have to get used to it. Unless Kotsay finds it, those numbers are close to what he's been putting up the last few years not to mention is a career .281/.336/.413/.750 hitter. I'll hold out on Jones as he's impressed me this spring and could either suck or explode (not to mention take over full time) with his talent. You know I hate Kotsay with a passion starting. It reminds me of the Erstad scenario all over again (and I in fact typed Erstad in the first sentence before backspacing and putting in Kotsay). I just hope that if it fails, Kenny sees it and pulls the trigger on a deal right away. Now, if Jones runs away with the position, I won't be surprised. He's the one person on the roster who actually has a shot at doing that. I doubt it happens, but I didn't care much for Jermaine Dye in the middle of May in 2005, and he turned out to be a top 2 free agent signing in White Sox history.

Even though it technically is, I don't really consider navy blue to be "blue" for whatever reason. I mean, you can say the Cubs and Twins both have red and blue jerseys, but their blues are vastly different. That being said, navy has been done to death too. Yankees, Rays, Tigers, Indians, Twins, Mariners, Braves, Nationals, Brewers, and Padres all use some sort of navy in them. And I seem to recall the Cards use it too. Also, I would say that the Astros don't use red or blue either, but they fall right along the Halloween colors of the Giants and Orioles with their orange and black unis, though their orange is more of a red-orange. Back on topic, the Sox jerseys are money.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 15, 2010 -> 11:13 PM) That was his first ever call up to the freaking big leagues that year, not to mention he was constantly injured that season (in fact.. he's been injured the last three seasons I believe, not to mention when he's been called up, so he hasn't had a true opportunity. Your being way too harsh on him. Plus I prefer to look at what he did just last season putting up a .300/.370/.506/876 line. Sure it was the PCL, but he has a good history of getting on base. He's stronger than Owens, plays better defense than Owens, has a stronger arm than Owens, but he's slower than Owens. (injures didn't help his legs either) I'm not saying he's gonna be a stud now, but he'd be a great 4th OF right now, and I would say if he settles in the big leagues I could see a .270/.355/.390/750 type player out of him. I think a .750 OPS would be about the best case possible scenario for him. He's had exactly one half season worth of play at a good level in the minor leagues (last year), and it was also the only year where he really hit for any power, though you could make an argument for his 2005 season as being power productive (I don't know that I call 36 XBHs with 9 of them being triples powerful, but instead leggy). Add to it that the league OPS for the PCL was .758 (opposed to .723 in the IL), and I think you can deflate those stats a bit from there too. There is also a thought...maybe it's my own, but I'm sure it would be echoed on here by a few...that guys who don't get a shot at starting don't get it for a reason. In fact, De Aza did get a chance, even if it was as a 23 year old rookie. De Aza does not excite me as a player. I think there is a use for him, but he seems to fit the mold of a Darin Erstad...might hit for a decent average, might get on at a decent clip, but he won't hit for much power, isn't going to hit well enough to be a good regular, and isn't going to be fast enough to force his way into the lineup. The injury problem is coincidental, as I'm not even considering that. If I had to predict a line for De Aza for the entirety of the season, if he were to hypothetically play full time, I would guess, based on what I've read and seen and heard about him, that he'd put up a .700 OPS. Something like .260/.330/.370. I don't want that production coming out of my DH spot. Hell, I don't want that coming out of CF, SS, 2B, or C, why would I want it out of my DH? He seems to be the 6th outfielder on the team. He'll probably be the first outfielder called up, and I'm sure the Sox will need it too.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 15, 2010 -> 05:42 PM) Not going to disagree with you on Kotsay/De Aza. One thing worth noting about De Aza's Min. stats though is that even if he's had a poor batting average in some stops, he's actually had a decent OBP due to taking a good number of walks. Starting in A ball, batting average/obp .255 .346 .286 .370 .278 .346 .300 .370 Those are his minor league stops where he's had 100+ at bats since 2004. QUOTE (iamshack @ Mar 15, 2010 -> 06:14 PM) The problem is that mlb pitchers will go right at him and force him to put the ball in play. And there is evidence of this too in his 2007 season. He walked 6 times in 158 plate appearances. He's going to draw more walks than that, but that's still just flat out awful. On top of that, he's going to have to hit atleast .270 to be able to put up a respectable OBP. If he's barely doing that in the minors, how can he be expected to do it in the majors? De Aza to me seems quite a bit like Jerry Owens. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 15, 2010 -> 06:27 PM) In a full season (500 AB's or so) he'd probably k about 100 times if he kept up the same rate. That's basically Podsednik territory, so it's fully workable. For comparison, I'm praying that D2: the Mighty Danks can get himself down to a I think there's a big difference comparing Danks and De Aza.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 15, 2010 -> 02:49 PM) He isn't the ideal power guy for me personally, but I'm thinking in terms of what Ozzie likes. He likes speed, versatility, and De Aza will give you a good OBP not to mention he is left-handed which KW mentions we are lacking (albeit power). This guy probably would have been a solid player, perhaps at worst a great 4th OF, if injuries didn't derail his development not to mention he was blocked in Florida. I don't know that De Aza is going to give you a good OBP. He's going to have to hit for average, and his career minor league batting average of .275 isn't exactly good, let alone trying to replicate it in the majors. De Aza might be on the shuttle to the majors a few times this season, but he'd be a pretty terrible choice for DH, like bad enough that I'd prefer Mark Kotsay to be the full-time DH to De Aza.

QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Mar 15, 2010 -> 03:48 PM) Does that mean you see CJ as a high ceiling, high achiever? Or low ceiling, low achiever? Low ceiling, high achiever.

QUOTE (jamesdiego @ Mar 15, 2010 -> 04:07 PM) I envision CJ beating winning the backup infielder job. And I also predict Alexei struggling so much that there will be cries for Becks to move to SS and CJ to 2B. And it would be successfull. You heard it here first! OK. In the meantime, can I have some of your crazy pills? I think you've had enough of them. I'd say the chances of Retherford making the opening day roster are slim to none, simply because he has options and Nix does not. It doesn't mean he's necessarily an inferior player to Nix (though he might be right now), it just means that they have him under control for longer. I do think he's going to be a major leaguer, and he could be a very serviceable player, perhaps even starting. I'm thinking something along the lines of Mark DeRosa, a guy who could be a capable starter but may have to take his beatings first.

CollegeInsider.com Tournament We get Creighton in the first round. It's actually pretty good for us, considering we're in like our 2nd or 3rd full year of transitioning to D-I. Everyone else is losers though.

QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Mar 14, 2010 -> 10:07 PM) If he could catch we could in theory keep him and Nix, and just cut Castro. They were going to try him at catcher. It would be for emergency situations only.

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Mar 14, 2010 -> 07:51 PM) i dont know, i kinda rather have 45 hrs and 130 rbi, vs 30,100, . u can say he is the best catcher but hes not the best player. mauer is a future 1b anyways I'm not going to argue it. It's a rather pointless argument. Beyond that, I think Mauer is just as likely to end up at 3B as he is 1B, and it's not out of the realm of possibility that he stays behind the plate for most of his career. -

QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Mar 14, 2010 -> 04:38 PM) ill take pujols any day over mauer and its not even close That's fine. I guess I just prefer catchers who hit .360 and put up OPS's north of 1.000 while also being solid defensively to 1Bman who put up 1.100 OPS's who, even if good defensively, are still just 1Bman. -

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Mar 14, 2010 -> 06:10 PM) yep. . he'll be a Red Sox or a White Sox by midseason. Stay tuned. . There are quite a few teams who are going to have interest in Adrian Gonzalez. Beyond that, the Red Sox have Youkilis, Ortiz, and Beltre as capable players at 1B, 3B, and DH, and still have Mike Lowell on their roster too. They'd have to make room for Gonzalez before they bring him in. The biggest sleeper in this entire race, to me, is the Mariners. They have prospects to deal, don't have a strong 1B platoon (Kotchman/Garko should be effective, but it's not ideal), and should be in contention all year.

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Mar 13, 2010 -> 04:54 AM) Or Tiger Woods (too obvious). I was thinking Antonio Cromartie or Travis Henry, but yeah, Woods works too.

QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Mar 13, 2010 -> 04:09 AM) Not disputing that at all, just that the element of true pure baseball as we used to know it has pretty much evaporated and now what sells is the entertainment value. I know full well those other sports revolve around money now. And you are right he deserves his part of the pie. I just lament that everything has become too commercial. Natural evolution as you say I guess. We may face the same situation with Beckham in 6 years (Albeit he is not homegrown he will probably grow to be the face of the franchise at some point). Baseball has always and always will be entertainment. Just be thankful teams aren't paying as much for players as much as they are big time actors (I'm sure someone can verify, but I seem to recall actors getting paid something like $30 million for a single movie). Just because it has become commercialized doesn't change that fact. Point blank, there are guys like Gordon Beckham and Joe Mauer and Albert Pujols who play the game because they love the game, but they are among the best in the world at playing baseball, and should be paid as such. Obviously Beckham is a few years away (though I imagine the Sox are going to be talking to him about an extension within the next 2 years), but there is money involved. That's the absolute bottom line; how else are you going to value something? If the Twins don't want to play ball with Mauer, then he'll be out of town. (of course, the Twins do want to play ball with Mauer, and will do anything to lock him up long-term. They are just looking for the best deal they can get) -
