QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 29, 2010 -> 01:32 PM) Theres your next Joe Nathan. The scouting report sounds nothing like Nathan though. Nathan's slider is/was sick nasty. For comparison's sake... Jesse Crain - 2.00 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 11.4 K/9, 3 BB/9, 0.2 HR/9 (and 0 HR in his first 111.2 IP) in 180 innings while being younger at each level and with what appears to be better stuff. He's been a relatively mediocre reliever for the Twins. It's very hard to gauge minor league relievers, and assuming that scouting report is accurate, Slama doesn't sound like anything dynamite.

Cubs promote OF Tyler Colvin to MLB

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 29, 2010 -> 04:10 PM) 3-4 non-linear days of baseball at 3 different positions is better than 6-7 games straight a week of playing 1 position? And not to mention that they don't think Colvin is a very good OF, and said he probably can't play CF. So that leaves LF and RF, unless they want to have a weak CF out there. I find any way in which you have your 24-year-old top prospect completely skip AAA just for a bench role. As a backup, I doubt they really care that he doesn't play CF very well. I just don't think they really care at all about a lot of things. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 29, 2010 -> 12:06 AM) Anybody ever hear of a guy named Anthony Slama? He's been in the Twins system for three years. His numbers are filthy. I see he's always been old for his league. But a 13.3 career K/9 should warrant some consideration. http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/p...id=slama-001ant I'm sure benchwarmin can tell us more about this guy. http://twins.scout.com/a.z?s=292&p=8&a...amp;nid=3766470 Last year was only his first in AAA, so I imagine we'll probably see him at some point this season.

Who do you want to get the last roster spot?

QUOTE (joeynach @ Mar 29, 2010 -> 12:27 AM) Once the league catches up to freddy's 87MPH fastball and array of junkballs that are never strikes his ERA will swell to over 5 and then we can call up Hudson to be the 5th starter. This wont happen till the beginning of July though. I think you mean if the league catches up to it. Paul Byrd was pretty damn solid for a 2-3 year stretch throwing nothing but 86-90 MPH junk from the right side. Normally those guys get lit up, but if the secondary pitches are good enough and the pitcher knows how to use it, they can be just fine. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 28, 2010 -> 11:24 PM) We're not even in the same stratosphere as the '09 Mariners defensively. So forget about that. We're going to have to score some runs. No, but I think it's going to be a solid defensive team. Teahen is scary, Quentin is a virtual unknown (but I figure somewhere between below average and average for him in RF), and PK has no range, but I imagine Jones will be solid in the outfield whenever he plays it, and Vizquel is still good too. But I like Rios, I actually like Pierre in LF (having no arm is scary, but he's a better baseball player, if you will, than Podsednik...he might not put up the numbers than Podsednik, but his speed and even slightly improved instincts will help make up for that), Ramirez is very solid, and I imagine Beckham should be pretty solid too. I'd also say the White Sox pitching staff is far better than the Mariners' staff was last season. Felix trumps all, but 2-5 I'd say the Sox are far superior.

and why would we trade with Detroit in the first place? I understand they trade with KC all the time, but the last time KC was even relevant was 2003.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 02:08 PM) Only 1 full time 2 hole hitter cracked 100 RBI last year and he was hitting behind Marco Scutaro and his .380 OBP. and he also hit 36 homers

QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 27, 2010 -> 10:52 PM) Didn't he coach in the National Championship game with Memphis? He was also in the '96 Final Four with UMass. Memphis's season has been forfeited due to player infractions and it no longer counts, so, while Memphis made it, it doesn't count anymore. -

Apparently the season really needs to start because people are freaking out.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 01:21 PM) Gavin's ceiling is much higher than Blackburn's. I'd say he's about as good as Billingsley though. I would completely agree with that, and would in fact go beyond that statement. I'm just going based on the numbers presented. If his curveball ever becomes a consistently good pitch for him, then he's a top of the rotation starter in almost every rotation in the majors. Solid fastball, good and very underrated changeup, and a great curveball...game snivs.

QUOTE (MattZakrowski @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 08:57 AM) Gavin Floyd's peripherals were really good last year. That's fine, there are a lot of pitchers who put up really good peripherals on a yearly basis. It doesn't change the fact that I'd say Gavin Floyd is in the second tier of pitchers in the league, right along with Blackburn and Billingsley.

Jason Heyward makes the Braves. He is more than 2 years younger than me and can't even drink yet. I'm officially starting to feel really, really old.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 02:09 AM) Yeah, that's what I mean... And I'm sure his situation is nothing to worry about. I just shared my experience (even if it is extreme) to show that weird stuff can happen even if you think a relationship is great. I think in most cases if a girl is that "into" you, then she really likes you. I agree. Women are crazy though.
-
Billingsley's good but he doesn't go without red flags. All of his peripherals got worse (not by much, but they did), and a career WHIP of 1.38 doesn't exactly scream dominant to me. He's good, but he gets grouped in with the Gavin Floyds and Nick Blackburns of the league, not the Tim Lincecums and Felix Hernandez's.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 11:52 PM) KW will find a way. Mitchell even injured is still a good prospect, and this is not counting a potential "PTBNL" from the draft this year and even with that.. we can sexy up the farm. These are bold predictions J4L.. so you know as much as anyone else unless your telling me you turned into Nostradamus. Besides.. I wasn't necessarily talking about an Adrian Gonzalez type impact bat either. More people have trouble with Teahen or.. Teahan. You can't even trade a player from the current year's draft as a PTBNL until like January, so that is completely ruled out. -Mark Kotsay is a man-pretty version of Darin Erstad -Adrian Gonzalez is traded to either the Mariners or Athletics -Jim Thome hits 20+ home runs

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Mar 26, 2010 -> 12:37 AM) Be careful thinking this. I was under this same thought for awhile and then my ex broke up with me out of nowhere one day. We were together every day and always in contact when we weren't. I mean, she spent the night at my apartment roughly 6 out of 7 nights of the week for months. At one point, she had stayed with me 14 straight nights (sidenote: this was dumb and I wouldn't do that again). And then boom! Breaks up with me one night saying her heart wasn't in the relationship, which confused the hell out of me b/c she was the one always wanting to be together. Said she was missing out on relationships with her friends, etc. I still think it was b/c of another guy (though she never started dating anyone for a few months after that). But one night about a month after we broke up, I was with her and she was texting a bunch. I was watching TV and happened to look at her phone b/c she looked like she was angling it away from me (e.g. so i couldn't see it), but I could and right before she sent a text, I read it. It said "she could never be what i could have been" and it was to one of her really good guy friends (who also happened to like her). So basically, I'm pretty sure she tried to get with this guy but he had a different girl at that point. b**** was still hooking up with me and leading me on saying things like "i feel right when i'm with you" and "i've been thinking a lot about getting back together." Meanwhile, it seems as if I wasn't the only guy on her radar. I would say be cautious more than be careful. Get a good feel of the situation. It is entirely possible that she does like the guy as a friend, even if he is a scumbag.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 05:58 PM) Yeah, as I said, I'm not sure why I care so much either. Perhaps I'm more concerned than I care to admit, I don't know. It's human nature. This dude has obviously hooked up with her in the past, so, even if there is no chance it happens again, it still feels like it could in the back of your mind. I think a lot of guys, when put in a situation like this, are generally insecure and defensive, even if it is over the top at times. Maybe you look back on this at some point down the road and realize how ridiculous it is and you laugh at it, but at the moment, it still sticks in the back of your mind and you want to deal with it and kill it and be over and done with it and you don't want to have a shred of doubt about it.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 03:29 PM) He played 135 games. Yes he did. He only played 107 of them at DH.
-
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 01:19 PM) Well, he DID bat this guy in the DH spot for 135 games in 2005: vs RHP .246 .317 .441 .757 vs LHP .265 .295 .419 .714 Only 107 games. And to be fair, the Sox didn't plan on having Everett DH or play nearly that much throughout the entirety of the year. They wanted Thomas to get healthy and be a big bat from the right side of the plate, and he was that for about a month, and then he went down again. Everett was basically the backup plan and depth off of the bench. Besides all of that, it doesn't justify the Sox using the DH's they are.

QUOTE (Ultimate Warrior @ Mar 25, 2010 -> 12:58 PM) I don't put any value into BA. It doesn't give bigger hits like doubles, triples, or homeruns any extra value, and it doesn't count walks. Adding walks into the equation alone give it much more value, hence OBP. A walk is just as good as a single. I'm sure you have seen something like this before. http://projectprospect.com/article/2009/07...stats-with-runs I just don't even bother with avg anymore. OPS is way better at evaluating how talented the hitter is. Just because it doesn't give any value to doubles, triples, homers, or walks doesn't leave it worthless. There are other statistics to be used, but if faced with a hypothetical scenario of choosing between a .280/.340/.460/.800 and a .240/.340/.460/.800 hitter, I'm going to take the former. Hell, depending upon the makeup of the team, I may take a .280/.330/.445/.775 hitter over a .240/.340/.460/.800 hitter. The name of the game is scoring runs, and while a higher OBP and SLG will produce more runs independent of everything else, a .280 hitter could very easily produce more runs than .240 hitter if the lineup surrounding said hitter is good. I don't particularly care for Jeff Francoeur as a hitter, but you simply cannot deny that his bat and other offensive performance in 2007 helped produced 170 runs. It's a very rough way of looking at it, and I'm not saying Francoeur is a guy I want to finalize my lineup, but average itself does help produce runs.

I got (the start of) a slow-clap in a 125 person lecture class today. That was pretty awesome.

Why is Tim Tebow considered a running QB? Because he ran a lot in college? It's honestly just something I've been wondering about. He isn't like a freak athletically in regards to his pure speed, and, though he's big, he doesn't really do anything to make defenders miss. There's an article on Deadspin that talks about how Belichick would covet him because of all that he could do with him. Sure, he can move around and would be able to avoid most rushes, but it's not like they're putting Ronnie Brown or even Michael Vick in the wildcat, they're putting a guy who pans out as pretty much a tight end who can throw. I could see it being sneaky from the vantage point of him running the same offense he did in college (not meaning the spread, but rather looking for one route, and if it doesn't open, run), but NFL defenses are exponentially faster and bigger than college defenses, and I think it's entirely possible he could get stuffed rather easily in a situation like that. I'm actually a guy that really likes Tebow and I think he can be an average NFL QB who the HEART OF A CHAMPION, but to consider him as a true wild cat QB? I dunno about that, I think the Patriots would be better off using Edelman as a wildcat option.
