QUOTE (son of a rude @ Aug 30, 2009 -> 07:39 PM) i dont see why people think getting figgins is so realistic. he is having a career year and will require a high priced, multi year contract. he will be 32 next year and his speed will start to diminish. with rios and peavy on the team, i really doubt they will give figgins the contract that he will want. agree

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 30, 2009 -> 04:38 PM) I think they're frustrated with Alexei on D, but I don't think they're foolish enough to underestimate what they have. He's a middle infielder, SS or 2b at worst, who can hit .300 and give 15-20 home runs and an .750+ OPS each year who's under our control for at least 4 more years with good speed. That's a ridiculously valuable piece in a trade. You're moving him you ought to get back an ace starting pitcher or a top of the league OF bat or something like that. and they have a SS who is playing 3B that can put up an .850 OPS

QUOTE (b-Rye @ Aug 29, 2009 -> 02:27 PM) Hudson started the season in A ball, I don't consider that top pitching prospect. Peavy is hurt btw and blocked a trade to the Sox before. The Sox front office considers him the best pitching prospect in the system, and I'd say they have a little more inside knowledge of the game and everything surrounding it than you do.

QUOTE (rangercal @ Aug 28, 2009 -> 11:49 AM) With that logic lets crown Eli as the best in the league , because he did not almost beat an undefeated team, he did. On a bum knee? Rivers has put up the numbers, he's won in the playoffs, and a lot of the times he did it, essentially, alone. Eli Manning, in the Super Bowl, had a great rotation of running backs, had a guy in Plaxico Burress who was an absolute dominating factor, got lucky because a guy who has since converted to a defensive back made the best catch in the history of the NFL playoffs, and had a defense that had finally figured out how to get to Tom Brady. Eli Manning had a hell of a lot more going for him than Phillip Rivers. -
good, I hope they do get him still, he'll get absolutely torn to shreds by everyone but the White Sox

QUOTE (rangercal @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 06:04 AM) How about Phillip Rivers accomplish more than Chad Pennington before we put him in the top 3. I still don't see him above the Romo/Cutler tier just yet. How about playing an undefeated team to a very close game in the AFC Championship on a partially torn ACL? How about leading his team to the AFC West title last year, even at 8-8? Phillip Rivers is one of the best QBs in the league. I'm leaving it at that. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 27, 2009 -> 05:33 AM) Honest to god, where was this post on game 163 of last season? The Sox won it with great starting pitching, great defense, a great bullpen, and BY MOTHERF***ING GOD, the home run. Where was this thread when Greg Walker was the hitting coach of the team that won the World Series in 2005? Where was this thread when Jermaine Dye resurrected his career in Chicago, and became the best free agent signing in White Sox history? Where was this thread when Quentin? Where was this thread when Beckham? I'm sorry, I'm sick of Walker too, and I think he needs a replacement, but I think he needs to be replaced by someone the organization feels is actually going to upgrade the hitters and improve their ability. If he is going to be replaced with a guy in AAA, I'd rather have Walker. "Lift and pull" still generates a hell of an offense; Earl Weaver can attest to it. Every offense struggles. If you blame Greg Walker on the Sox not being able to hit pitchers they have never seen (which is currently wrong) or pitchers who have been struggling (which is currently right), then YOU are wrong; you are blaming the advanced scouting staff for not knowing how those pitchers have been attacking hitters recently. Oh, and against a knuckler, you absolutely swing for the motherf***ing fences; if he doesn't get his knuckler over, and you arent swinging towards Japan, you can have 12 base hits in 6 innings and 2 runs (and I'm sure most would like that more right now. I think those that feel that way are wrong).

oh yeah, and Brad Penny is an NL pitcher. He'll go to the Rockies and pitch wherever and he'll be solid for a month and a half, and then get more money in free agency. The Sox should want absolutely nothing to do with him.

Of course San Diego loves the trade. They don't have to file bankruptcy.

BTW, without looking, I believe Phillip Rivers led the league in passer rating last year. That's a hell of a testament when his biggest targets are Antonio Gates (the best receiving TE in the game, but only averaged 11.7 yards per catch and only had 60 receptions), LdT, who is growing closer to Westbrook injury-proneness, Vincent Jackson, who is a good, but not great #1, Chris Chambers, who is older, though still solid, and Malcom Floyd, a 29 year old receiver this year, who was not drafted; they have virtually no one else. Yes, Rivers had a running game, but considering they threw the ball 50+ more times than they ran it, and LdT ran for 3.8 a carry...he didn't have a lot. Rivers became the offense last year, he took over, and led the league in passer rating and threw for 30 touchdowns. For f*** sakes, Phillip Rivers might just be the most underrated QB in the league. The dude took the Patriots to a 1-score game in the AFC Championship when they won 16 games in the regular season ON A TORN ACL when LdT COULDN'T PLAY. And he had a pretty good game too. I'd say Phillip Rivers is one of the top 3 QBs I would like leading my team for the next 5 years, and that list still includes Peyton Manning, even if he is a bit older. -
somewhere, Brian Anderson is still partying with Brad Penny. And you still can't touch Brad Penny's shoulder.

QUOTE (Leonard Zelig @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 04:09 PM) Alexei makes just over a million a year, so it wouldn't really be anything like the Lee trade. The Sox don't need a salary dump though. In 2005, the payroll was right around $105 mill. It's gone up by roughly 33% since that time period. But they can capitalize on a player who is a bit overrated because he's more of a sexy numbers type player but really isn't a stupendous or building block type player. -

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 01:31 PM) Everyone knows whats at stake. For guys like Pods, Thome and Dye- this may be their final run with us. The time is now for them to step up. In 2004 when we fell short of the playoffs, KW used his imagination to the extreme! Let Maggs and Valentin walk via free agency. Trade Lee for Pods, Vizciano. Sign Dye, El-duque, AJ, Hermanson and Iguchi. And prior to 2004 ending KW aqcuired Contreras, Everett and Garcia via midseason trades. This year KW aqcuired Peavy, Rios and Pena via midseason trades. Will he let Dye, Thome, Dotel and Contreras walk via free agency? What big name will he trade similar to Lee? What free agents will he sign? Maybe missing the playoffs in 2009 (although would suck) maybe a blessing in disguise. Alexei -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Aug 26, 2009 -> 03:35 PM) Honestly, you would think Nix was even a decent major leaguer judging by every post you make. He is a good major leaguer. Good power, can draw a walk, and plays fantastic defense. He's a better version of Juan Uribe.

I can't in all good heart say that Kurt Warner is a top 5 QB in the league. He had a fantastic year last year, but he's still a statue in the pocket, has Brett Favre syndrome (in that he'll just chuck it downfield and hope someone comes down with it), and he fumbles and turns the ball over a ton. His 30-14 TD:INT ratio last year looks solid enough, but add in 11 fumbles, 7 of which the Cardinals lost, and that TD:TO ratio becomes 30-21, which isn't good. Beyond that, Kurt Warner has never had a good year when he had even an average cast of wideouts: Bruce, Holt, and Faulk in St. Louis, and Fitzgerald, Boldin, and Breaston in Arizona. Good call on Brady too TRU. I think Tom Brady might be one of the smartest QBs in the game, but in the end that's all that means. He's a fantastic game manager who I do not believe is one of the top 3 QBs in the league but will look like it because of his receiving corps. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 25, 2009 -> 03:03 PM) But...he has a ring, and he's quite simply more marketable because of his name and the city where he plays. You could probably have said the same thing about Jim McMahon too.
