QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 25, 2009 -> 12:58 PM) That was pretty awesome how you just made a large g while generalization while failing to back up your point. Is argument for Brandon Allen not being able to play the OF, really that Josh Fields couldn’t do it? As I said, it’s a false premise Brandon Allen is not Josh Fields nor am I ChiSox or you Thunderbolt. You're right, and Josh Fields couldn't play the outfield because he couldn't play QB in the Big 12. Some guys just cannot play the outfield. There is a much different natural reaction to seeing a ball coming at you on the ground than there is in the air, and some guys never figure it out. Some guys do and can move around the diamond. Josh Fields was not given a long look in the outfield because the Sox brass felt that he could not handle the OF after even just a small time out there. If they felt that Brandon Allen could have played in the outfield, I guarantee you they would have given him more than 8 games in rookie ball 5 years ago (or whenever it was). The fact of the matter is that, from what the Sox brass has seen, and what the Arizona brass has seen, Brandon Allen cannot play the outfield. He's a big kid already, and he's not going to get smaller as he gets older. He's a 1Bman. On to Brandon Allen's value...compare Allen's numbers in AA and AAA to those of Casey Kotchman, Paul Konerko, Aubrey Huff, and Adam LaRoche. All 4 have been relatively average 1Bman, though good to great at times. If that is Brandon Allen's ceiling, then the value is about perfect; Adam LaRoche, after proving himself at the MLB level, was traded for a dominant left handed reliever. Brandon Allen, having not proven himself, was traded for an average MLB reliever who is young and has been solid in the past.

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Aug 25, 2009 -> 02:29 PM) Fine, Rivers is above average. I think the point is that he's getting paid more than quarterbacks that are better than he is. Eli Manning is being paid more than Rivers, and Eli Manning is, in my mind, a far inferior QB. -
Josh Fields is also athletic and he failed as an outfielder.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 08:22 PM) watching MLBN and they are reporting that Mets players are saying Johan Santana is going to require surgery on his left elbow, but no word on the severity of the surgery that should be about expected out of every starting pitcher. It's rare when a power pitcher doesn't have surgery anymore.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 23, 2009 -> 11:53 PM) 1. They lost Douglass, but they added one of the best TE's ever. 2. While the Saints are going to have Colston back at 100%, they just don't play defense. 3. I'm not sure how Carolina got better. D'Angelo Williams is not going to have that same season again, Delhomme continues to get worse, and Peppers still is unhappy. Jonathan Stewart -

QUOTE (knightni @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 03:07 AM) If this turns out totally incorrect; it will be going in my sig area. Why? Winning 4 of 7 in the northeast would almost certainly keep the Sox in 2nd place, it would be comprehendable, it would keep them close within the division race, and whatever whatever. That wouldn't surprise me. Winning 2 of 3 against Minnesota in the Dome, for the final time, would give me a f***ing boner. I don't anticipate dudes getting me aroused. The Yankees have been the best team in baseball for about 2 months now, and Boston has played well at home too, even if that meant losing 2 of 3 against the best team in baseball. They took 3 of 4 at home against the best team in the AL Central, mainly because the Tigers aren't a great team. The Sox really aren't either. I think the Sox are a more talented team, but this team seems to be taking on the traits as if Manuel were managing again. This roadtrip means a lot. It's best to leave it at that for the time being. I personally don't expect much, but expecting is not receiving.

Anyone gonna be in Gwinnett, GA tomorrow?

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Aug 24, 2009 -> 03:15 AM) You know, back in April, I was thinking about hitting up this double header. The Barons are out of town and I'm off work, plus it's only a three hour drive from where I am. But, I'll probably just stay home. Who would have thunk it back in April that Peavy would pitch in one of the games? you need to get to Gwinnett, and you need to FIND THAT F***ING DOG -

QUOTE (WilliamTell @ Aug 22, 2009 -> 09:37 PM) The Phillies just beat the Mets and I'm looking at the box score. The Mets used 7 different pitchers. Tim Redding pitched 5 scoreless innings and was taken out. Pat Misch came in the 6th and gave up 2 runs and ended up taking the loss. What I don't understand is mlb.com also counts as a Blown Save along with a Loss. I don't get how it could be a blown save when you can only pitch a maximum of 3 innings to earn a save. Seems to me that the 6th inning is too early to register a blown save. any time a reliever comes in after a starter has pitched enough innings to qualify for the win and the lead is blown, it is a blown save

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 22, 2009 -> 05:30 PM) Well, the odds are not looking that great. On paper, we should be better now than last year's team, but we're certainly not proving that on the field of play. It just doesn't "feel" like we have the team to get it done this year, but Minnesota really handed it back to us the last week of the season after we'd been swept up there and things were looking really, really bleak. 11-12, 10-13, 9-14....those look like the three most LIKELY records to come out of this upcoming stretch (the Bataan Death March of games, like Minnesota's road trip during the GOP Convention). Detroit is back close to their high water mark of the season, and they're showing the ability to rally (in two games this week, ironic, because the White Sox were ALSO able to knock out former pitcher Aardsma, our ONLY come from behind victory of the season in late innings, amazing!), at least at home, we're they're winning .667 of their games. They're not a good road team, 25-36. We've play fairly well this season on the road, but it's expecting too much for Peavy to just come in and pitch like an ace and for all the cogs of the machine to suddenly click. We're one of those teams that appears to be better than it really is, the opposite of 2005...a team that just knew how to get it done and had the confidence that nearly every 2 and especially 1 run lead was their game for the taking. Where the team was much better than the sum of all its individual parts but a well-oiled machine that just knew how to get it done. We've had a couple of nice runs since May, but those were followed up by implosions against sub .500 competition when we should have been putting ourselves 10-12 games over .500 and squarely into the thick of things. This mentality of waiting for the Tigers to lose or choke when they're getting such good starting pitching on a consistent basis from Verlander (really the best AL pitcher since the first month of the season), Jackson and Porcello and surprising contributions from rookies like Thomas and Raburn (we've been able to produce one rookie OFer in years to put up an 800+ OPS for the Sox), the Jackson trade (stroke of genius), releasing Sheffield, winning the biggest games of the season against us (particularly the DeWayne Wise out at home, or not, game)... You can't really make ANY argument at this point that we deserve to WIN the division. If we play better the next 35-40 games and beat DET, great, but I don't see them imploding (barring a pitching injury) like MINN did down the stretch, especially at home, where they've had wonderful fan support nearly all season long. Holy. I didn't even begin to read it. Honestly, that post is way too long for this thread. Story goes that the road trip means everything. If the Sox are respectable on the roadie (5-5, 6-4, even 4-6, somewhere in that territory), they have a good shot. If they go 3-7 or 2-8 (which is what I am counting on, the 2-8), they have a long road to go. There is a ton of talent still on this roster, and there is absolutely nothing stopping them but themselves and injuries. If they want to win the ugly bride that is the AL Central, it's there for the taking. If they don't, so be it. They're ready next year too.

QUOTE (lostfan @ Aug 23, 2009 -> 02:19 AM) So my hard drive abruptly died. That is the PCs equivalent of having a heart attack. Quite possibly the most brutal experience to have to go through. I had a backup drive but something was wrong with the software and I didn't bother to fix it so it hasn't backed up in 8 months, so now I'm looking at my PC as it was on November 2008. Awesome. Obama beat McCain, Sox traded for Jake Peavy, claimed Alex Rios on waivers in the biggest financial "free" waiver transaction of all time, and they are in 2nd place, 2.5 games back with Detroit losing in Oakland. share the news with your computer when you want.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 22, 2009 -> 07:11 AM) It wouldn't make any sense for them to commit money to a part of Thome's contract that at the time, wasn't guaranteed. Why would a team trade a guy, pick up a lot of his contract and also agree that if said player played well enough to kick in another year of his contract, they will throw you even more money? you and I have talked about this before. The end of the story is that Philadelphia gave $22 million; if you spread that money out, it covers 5.5 mill over the duration of the 4 years
