QUOTE(Colorado Sox Fan @ Sep 19, 2007 -> 10:30 AM) I don't pay a lot of attention to...LSD or any of your other acronyms. Dock Ellis is the greatest.

QUOTE(Mplssoxfan @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 09:57 PM) When I let my hair grow long, I get this a lot: I have to reply, from the waist up, only. so does Mario just have big junk or am I missing something here?

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 03:49 PM) This comment makes it seem like you're making the two (being a "fan" of your team and a fan of baseball) mutually exclusive when you don't have to. Maybe you aren't doing that but that's how I'm reading it. I can root like hell for the White Sox while, at the same time, appreciate the awesomeness of Joel Zumaya's arm, Grady Sizemore's bat, or Curtis Granderson's extra basehit record. I don't view the two as a balancing scale where, if my interest in my team goes up my interest in 'the game' (ie something bigger than an individual team or player) itself goes down. If anything, this season has provided for a nice change-of-pace. Instead of being tied to the White Sox, I've been able to do things like watch Jake Peavy pitch more often, see more Vlad Guerrero and, moving my scope outwards a bit, watch more left-coast games. That being said -- nothing will ever beat the emotions tied with the 2005 season. Not just winning the Series, but everything leading up to it; the scrutinized winter moves of 2005; the cautious optimism in the Spring; the near collapse in September -- even little things like the Timo bashing and eternal Willie Harris love will remain with me. And -- in my opinion -- there is no aspect of being a fan of 'the game', a fan of the game's history, that can even come close to touching the sensations tied with being a true fan of a team. Wonderful

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 03:17 PM) 4. I think it's a given Garland/Contreras is gone, and I with seemingly no one interested in taking Count, Garland and his 12 million looks to be coming off the books, as well as 2 million for Cintron, 750K for Erstad, 2.9 for Pods, 2.75 for Mackowiak. If the team really thinks they can compete, and still maintain a reasonable payroll, they are going to have to take some chances with guys like Bourgeois and Gonzo. That really is quite a bit of money; however, the money for Pods and Cintron has already gone back into Dye's 2008 salary, so the Sox are looking about probably $3.5 more or so coming off along with whomever they trade. However, I really would not be surprised in the least if both Garland and Contreras wind up in different uniforms next year; it's a risky move, but I imagine another starting pitcher would be coming back the Sox way - probably in the form of a prospect - and then the rotation is shaping up to be something along the lines of Buehrle, Vazquez, Danks/Egbert/Gio/Floyd/Haeger/prospect/NRI's. Probably a terrible rotation, but it's worth a shot, and it saves a ton of money. Getting rid of both Contreras and Garland brings the overall payroll down to about $75-80 mill...if the Sox are willing to go up to $105-110, that's a ton of money they can spend. Whether that's a good thing or not, I'm not sure, but it's a lot of money.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 01:37 PM) If someone is getting on base at a high clip, the K's are not all that important. I agree with you by the way, they should be shooting higher. But... its all about budget. If the choices for SS and CF are, for example: Eckstein and DeJesus or Furcal and Owens I'll take the latter. I would of course like to upgrade both, but if getting Furcal means having Owens in CF, I don't think that's such a huge sacrifice. Assuming David Eckstein gets 2/$10 (and that's a very high number), you are still looking at $7.5 mill in the top combo and $13.5 mill in the second combo; that either allows the Sox to add more money either in the pen, in the rotation, or to the rest of the lineup. There are way too many variables to be playing with to leave it at those two; those are obviously just examples, but you are using two players without taking into consideration the 23 other players on the roster too. Furcal and Owens may mean the pitching staff is absolute garbage, while Eckstein and Dejesus may mean the Sox can afford to make another splash on the trade market, bringing in a guy in his 5th or 6th year in the league (thus, signed relatively cheaply, relatively young, but good at the same time).

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 09:03 AM) The point that you was so easily missed is that slumps during rookie years happen. They happen to some of the best hitters around. Using a rookie year slump as a disqualifier of future preformance is short sighted at best. Also if you really want to nitpick, Robin had way less of a resume when he came up to the majors. He had one season at AA, and that was it. He numbers were less than impressive. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/v/robin-ventura.shtml Fields numbers pretty much blew away Ventura's minor league numbers at every stop Josh had in the minors, and he also got about 1000 ABs down there. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/F/Josh-Fields-1.shtml A 1.300+ career OPS in 3 years of college baseball is less impressive than 3 years of 1.000 OPS? Hell, Ventura had 1 full season in the minors before he was called up to Chicago; I don't think a comparison between the two is even relevant.

QUOTE(Chi Town Sox @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 01:15 AM) If Dustin Pedroia was not an option along with Josh having more at bats this year, he could have had a good chance at winning it even with his horrible avg. See Bobby Crosby (who did have a higher OBP though, less SLG and close OPS. but plays better D) Fields has very close numbers to him even though he played significantly less. Youve gotta believe that Fields would have probably been better towards the end of a whole year. Crosby - G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS 151 545 70 130 34 1 22 64 58 141 7 3 .239 .319 .426 .744 Fields - G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB K SB CS AVG OBP SLG OPS 88 332 39 77 14 0 19 59 25 114 1 1 .232 .285 .446 .731 That was also an absolutely terrible rookie class; the White Sox had two guys finish in the top 10. For comparison's sake, Josh Fields is probably the 4th best rookie between Kansas City's roster and the White Sox roster (I count Bannister, Butler, and Gordon ahead of him in that order).

QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 12:41 AM) Not meant to pile on, but Jose Contreras was worth it. I'll take a World Series and he was instrumental. Watching some of the 2005 highlight things on youtube reminds me how great that Series title was. We may not see another WS title in our lifetimes and we don't get it w/out Jose probably. So I'd say he was worth the money. He was worth his original Yankees contract. His contract extension has proven to be a pretty s***ty deal thus far.

QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Sep 18, 2007 -> 12:48 AM) If the only difference between that lineup and 2008 reality is that Rowand/Hunter is in CF, then I don't see a big difference (although maybe not a last place team). And if one of those guys is in CF, I wouldn't be surprised if Erstad or Owens is the starting LF. Ozzie has to get his official leadoff hitter. In fact, tonight Ozzie said that it's not a sure thing Fields will be with the Sox in 2008. I think you're looking at a different shortstop too.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Sep 17, 2007 -> 12:41 PM) PLease don't shoot the messenger on this one, I'm posting it because it's interesting, not because I agree. Rob Neyer on why Thome may not yet be a HOF caliber player. So Thome isn't a HoFer because he hasn't finished in the top 10 in MVPs and hasn't made it to many All-Star games, his statistics bedamned? The same thinking suggests that the 2005 White Sox won because of small ball and grinders. Not shooting the messenger, rather shooting the writer and thought behind the message delivered.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 17, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) I always thought the booing of Magglio was pretty lame, same goes for Cleveland and Thome. I thought the booing of Magglio initially was just fine, and I felt the two situations were completely different. Magglio stabbed the White Sox fans in the back by not accepting a 4/$60 offer and then by getting rid of any possibility of him resigning with the Sox when he changed agents to Boras. Thome wanted to go back to Cleveland, and it was Cleveland who did not want him back; their offer absolutely paled him comparison to Philly's, and Jim would have been dumb not to accept it. If a Sox fan still held the same grudge against Maggs, then I'd agree completely with you -
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 17, 2007 -> 03:26 PM) Josh Fields is quarterbacking right now on ESPN classic. I wish Vermillion didn't suck. No ESPNews, no ESPN Classic. Those are easily the best two ESPN channels there are.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 17, 2007 -> 10:45 AM) Jerry Owens is quietly putting together an awesome SEPT Awesome's a strong word. A good September is better. He's getting on base at a ridiculous rate, which is indeed very good and something that makes him a valuable player. One extra base hit - meaning he has an Iso of .020 - is terrible. He's making a case for being a 4th outfielder for the team next year, and that's something I wouldn't object to, so long as they add some power to the bench as well.

In my mind, if Frank Thomas is a Hall of Famer, Jim Thome is a Hall of Famer. -
So no love for Jack Clark? .286 35 106 .459/.597/1.056 for a Cardinals team that went to the World Series. He probably didn't get it because he missed 30 games, but in my mind, he deserved it over all 4 you mentioned.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 16, 2007 -> 10:44 PM) I thought I remember reading Norv Turner's career head coaching record being something close to 20 games under .500. If that's true, it's tough for me to understand how he got the job so easily. On an unrelated note, why hasn't Byron Leftwich been picked up yet? Has he deteriorated that much? I always thought he was an above average QB with an absolute cannon of an arm... Yeah, I'm not a big Norv Turner fan either, and I really think the Chargers are going to disappoint a lot of people this year. Probably a 10 win team just because of how ridiculous the talent level is on that roster, but it really wouldn't surprise me if Turner's gone after this season. Outstanding OC, bad head coach. I'd also assume he got the job simply because he was experienced and it was late in the offseason when Schottenheimer was fired.
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Sep 16, 2007 -> 09:29 PM) And yet Norv Turner is meant to be an offensive genius Could A.J Smith's ego cost this team a superbowl I wonder? Only giving LDT the ball 9 times in the second half last year cost them the Superbowl. Firing Schottenheimer when he mismanages a game so badly was almost necessary.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 14, 2007 -> 04:08 PM) The White Sox won't blow anyone out of the water for Alex Rodriguez and he probably won't be coming here. That's about the long and short of it. "probably" is not a strong enough word; that leaves open a solid possibility it does. "Likely" or "almost assuredly" are better.
