QUOTE(BearSox @ Sep 8, 2007 -> 11:16 PM) I looooooove it how the team decides to actually give a damn when losing actually would help us. While, KW and Ozzie will see this and Pods and the rest of the grinders will be brought back, most likely. just recently you said you cheer for the team, but understand losing is better; I agree with that philosophy. Yet, here you are b****ing about a game in which the team scored 6 runs in the 9th to tie the game. Basically, you don't cheer for them at all.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 8, 2007 -> 09:47 PM) Brewers and Cubs win. Let's get hot again. PS: LaRussa is one of the greatest facilitators of steroids in the game. The Bash Brothers, Rick Ankiel, plenty of guys on the rosters besides the names, I'm sure, and he's always right there, steady like San Francisco. Pretty interesting that not all franchises operate like that, though, or managers. Arizona is on record as saying that they got rid of people they thought were on steroids and Glaus was one of them. I actually have kinda figured that out recently too. Or, at the very least, that LaRussa's a dick and doesn't give a s*** what his players do, either on their own time or in improving as a baseball player, and it reflects upon his character as a person and a manager.

From what I understand, Chris Ianneta's value is way down...why would he be part of the package? I don't see Colorado as a match unless they want to trade for Contreras.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Sep 8, 2007 -> 03:42 PM) alex cintron is garbage. Are he and Andy freaking Gonzalez our only options at 3B? For this year, yes. Which is just fine, as it assures more losses than the team would be getting otherwise.

agreed completely. Mark Grace is being a douche.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 8, 2007 -> 01:48 PM) I gotta feeling that will happen as well. which would be terrible, because it goes against everything he's ever done in regards to building a bullpen (unless you count Dustin Hermanson as overpaying; probably was, but $2.5 mill over 2 years for a solid reliever isn't much). He's built really good bullpens in the past, and I liked the pen he had setup this year, but it turned into a perfect storm of s***tiness. I wouldn't mind seeing a similar pen to opening day this year, save Nick Masset.

LA has no use for Crede with Andy LaRoche waiting in the wings. That's why they were willing to Betemit to the Yankees. If you are trading for Furcal, it's either going to take Contreras and Egbert/Gio or Garland and perhaps a AAAA player like Aardsma or Masset. I'd much rather deal Garland in that scenario. I also think that, while Contreras will have a bit value this winter, you will have to either trade him for a bad contract (or two bad contracts, ala Hundley for Grudzielanek and Karros that the Cubs made a few years back); if you expect a prospect or two, you'll have to include cash to go along with it, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just something that it appears the Sox really like to avoid doing.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 07:26 PM) I take it Anthony Reyes is #4 and Aybar is starting at second? only if Pods and Erstard are starting in the outfield

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) 1. I'm being facetious. 2. TONY GWYNN is a better hitter than Bonds. (Truthfully, I think there are at least six guys I'd rank higher than Bonds. Tony Gwynn is not one of them. BUT HE IS NOW) we get to argue Tony Gwynn again, eh?

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 12:05 PM) Sabean and Purpura have built World Series teams. Guess they'd be good GMs if they had won that Series. But it's all up to the players. I'm glad Littlefield is gone. He's beyond bad. Purpura didn't build s***. Gerry Hunsicker built that Houston team, retired after the 2004 season, and Purpura came on board, signed Roger Clemens halfway through the year, and watched the team catch fire. And it's not hard to build a team when you have a top 3 hitter of all time putting up some of the best seasons baseball has ever seen.

The players have stayed ahead of the curve. Until baseball adopts the Olympic drug testing policy, performance enhancing drugs will always be a problem. Unfortunately, I don't ever see Fehr and the MLBPA allowing such a policy, and I doubt you'll ever see the game completely clean.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 01:18 AM) I read this all the time and I just don't get it. What are the 2 sporting events with the biggest performance enhancing drug issues? 1.) Cycling - incredibly thin and ripped men riding bikes 2.) Track - incredibly thin and ripped men/women running really fast. Now why would it surprise anyone that a speed player with injury problems (another fine use for steroids) would turn to a banned substance to keep his career afloat? Or how about a reliever who has to go out there 3, 4, sometimes 5 days in a row?
-
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 01:09 AM) Yep. It still amazes me that people use the "he's a cheater!" response for not wanting Bonds. Those using that reasoning really are turning a blind eye to players that they probably rooted for very hard who were doing the same exact stuff. And I don't necessarily think less of any of these guys, either. When you see one guy getting bigger and stronger and recovering quicker -- along with the other perceived and/or real benefits -- it's gotta cross your mind that maybe you should try some 'things', especially when baseball was basically turning their cheek to this. I'll go as far as to say that steroids saved the game of baseball.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Sep 6, 2007 -> 11:46 PM) What's the point of being a fan at all then? Why not just be a fan of the draft? Finish last every year and enjoy the draft. The point is ENJOYING BASEBALL SEASON. Enjoying victories instead of seeing your team get about five hits per contest. Fifty below zero winter days are here soon enough. With the way this team played this year, it may as well have been 50 below in June.

QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Sep 6, 2007 -> 09:04 PM) talented players. I don't think Ozzie is the greatest manager in history, but Casey Stengel couldn't win with this team. I'm not talking this year. In my mind - some will disagree, others will agree - Ozzie cost the Sox the division last year. There were certain factors, such as the pitching staff falling apart, that were uncontrolled. Podsednik leading off all but one game he started and Mackowiak playing in CF 33% of the time were huge detractors from what the team could have done. I also didn't feel Gload got nearly enough playing time, but that's a matter of opinion. Still, a good bench coach suggests that he try a change, and perhaps something clicks; like, for instance, starting Iguchi in the leadoff spot instead of Podsednik for a game. I think people would really be surprised what a big influence years of experience would have on Ozzie.

Lancaster f***ing sucks anyways

Getting rid of Ozzie right now would be like getting rid of a young player after a year when they've shown signs that they can be a star player. What Ozzie really needs is a good bench coach. Ozzie is not a good manager right now, and he's never been a good in-game manager; however, he has the potential to be one of the best managers in the majors. He never will reach that potential with Joey Cora as his bench coach, nor with Rock, nor with Harold. Bring Nossek back, or bring in Jack McKeon, or someone of the ilk. Ozzie needs a strong influence, and he has never had that.

Richar has honestly made me forget about Cunningham. Not that I wanted Cunningham gone, just that he's nothing more than a spec in the rearview mirror now.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Sep 6, 2007 -> 10:24 AM) I really can't understand why Cintron is still with the organization. Well, to be quite fair, I've been saying the same thing about Erstad since about March, but stopped saying it because I figured people were getting tired of it.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 6, 2007 -> 08:36 AM) Since there is no Sox Loser thread, I'll put this here... In Gavin's Floyd's starts in August/September, take a look at his numbers: 8/05: 6 IP, 7 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 6K 8/11: 4 IP, 7 H, 7 ER, 1 BB, 2 K 8/28: 6 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K 9/05: 6 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 6 K That's 3 good starts in 4. And even with the lousy one, that is a 4.50 ERA. Now, before people go off onto one ledge or the other, I am not saying he looks great. He doesn't. He still loses velocity and control in the stretch, still can't hold runners on, and still sails pitches on occasion. But... considering what we saw in ST, and then in his brief 2-start stint in July... there is simply no denying that he is improving. I hope we see Gavin every 5th or 6th game to the end of the season, to see if this is a fluke, or if he really is progressing. He may still turn out to be a serviceable 5th starter. I still like a Jake Westbrook comparison. -First round picks -given up on by their original teams (Westbrook was actually traded 3 times) -similar body build -6.00+ ERAs in their first 100 or so innings -neither has stuff that blows you away -both were good in AAA and subsequently struggled in the majors

How about Abreu for LF next year?
witesoxfan replied to santo=dorf's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(Vance Law @ Sep 6, 2007 -> 12:57 AM) We could also sign Abreu and then immediately trade him. We keep the superior Thome and get these good prospects of which you speak. Nah, you sign someone to a major league contract and you have to keep them until like around June 15th.
