QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 06:06 PM) Well that's fine and dandy, but his K/BB in the minors is 3.4 and the year that apparently made him a legitimate prospect, it was 4.4. Middlebrooks seems as though he's going to be a BA dependent player, and when a guy who strikes out as often as Trayce Thompson is dependent upon BA, it's not a good thing. No, I'd stay as far as from Will Middlebrooks as I could. I agree, the sox shouldn't use up key trade pieces for Middlebrooks, if higher prospects were/ are available. I should have said this offseason take a chance, as he Red sox impatience with players makes them expendable. But if the sox don't improve at 3b and fix other positions this deadline, they will need to find value players in the offseason at spots they didn't upgrade at. That means finding young guys who can rebound from poor 2013 seasons via trade or finding hidden gems in free agency. Middlebrooks may not be a guy to build around. But he's likely to be a guy on the outs with the Red Sox, and can be had for less than his true worth.

Peavy to Boston, Avisail Garcia + 3 low lv specs to Sox

Here's two current looks at what the top prospects in the minors are. I could see some guys in the 30-60 range. http://www.minorleagueball.com/2013/7/18/4...d-season-update http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/fangraphs-2...p-50-prospects/ Names mentioned: Sardinas: top 75-150 now; wasn't in top 150 for Sickels; Fangraphs: around top 75 now; Cecchini-45 now; wasn't in top 100 pre-season for Fangraphs; 30 by Sickels, outside of top 50 pre-season; Davidson: now 72, was 101 for Sickels; not in top 50 for Fangraphs; Joc Pederson: now 31, was 114. Was called by Sickels the "Garin Cecchini of OFers" in one of his write ups. Other names: Both Alen Hanson and Polanco are rated much higher in both. Adam Eaton was around 100 for Sickels earlier in year. -

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 02:50 PM) If we are trading with Texas the package should be built around Sardinas. You'll probably like this about Sardinas from 2010. Don't know if this Parks guy is on crack or not. But TIFWIW. http://www.bbtia.com/home/2010/6/10/highes...sardinas-8.html Sardinas has done very well since this was written on him, though. With his above avg. defense, ability to hit for avg., get on base, along with some speed, definitely what the sox could use. -

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 02:50 PM) I also want no part of Middlebrooks. If we are trading with Texas the package should be built around Sardinas. With the Red Sox my top target would be Cecchini with Vincio also included. The Red Sox wouldn't trade Middlebrooks this deadline anyway-though I could see in the offseason in the right deal. But I'm with you. I like both Sardinas and Cecchini as headliners. Now, could the sox have the right pieces to net both? Doubtful. A Peavy trade could land one. -

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 22, 2013 -> 02:52 AM) Thats if Sardinas was actually included in the deal, most reports I have seen show the rest of the package minus Sardinas. Guessing that it was leaked by the Cubs that he was included to drive up the perceived value of Garza. I would take the deal with Sardinas if they included Odor or Williams. So many guys in that deal are so far away you have to get quite a few to increase the chances one actually succeeds. The Cubs supposedly want pitching back in a deal for Garza. Sardinas probably wasn't asked for as the Cubs have a AA SS ranked #2 of all SS's. With Profar ahead of Sardinas (and already blocked by Andrus), he would most likely be available for a Peavy deal. -

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Jul 21, 2013 -> 03:41 PM) It actually wasn't Luke Jackson. It was Olt, Sardinas, CJ Edwards, and Neil Ramirez. I guess all the pieces haven't been publicized, all speculation, ESP. Who was injured. But my point was the sox should be familiar with the Rangers prospects, from having teams in the same A and A+ leagues. -

QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Jul 21, 2013 -> 04:13 PM) Sooner the better wrt trading Peavy. Risk of him getting injured again isn't worth holding out. The sox definitely should hold out for the best deal. There's no rush to dump Peavy, even if he gets re-injured before the 31st. Then the Sox keep him for next year, worst case. Then they might have to trade a SP like Santiago instead in the offseason to help the offense. But I could see a decent offer come even before his next start. Other teams know they're getting a guy who won't wilt under pressure, as long as the medical reports look good. -

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 21, 2013 -> 03:43 PM) If the rumored return for Garza is right, we should be able to swing a franchise-changing kind of deal for Peavy if our GM can scout and negotiate well. Two of those pieces were supposedly Sardinas and Luke Jackson, both in the CAL league so the Sox should be familiar with them. -

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Jul 21, 2013 -> 01:22 PM) I agree. I wouldn't be upset if they kept Jake. Our pitching has been the one bright spot this year. We just need to restock and reload the offense. Make some smart trades for guys like Owings and Polanco, and sign 2 free agents (granderson, moreau) and we can be back at a competitive level. If the sox don't trade Peavy this deadline, trades in the offseason would have to be centered around young, cost controlled pitching-Santiago, Reed, Quintana (though next to Sale is prob. One of the most valuable players) to get that offense. with the sellers market for SP, Peavy has to go for the sox to get key positional player prospects now. He's one of the few guys the sox have that can bring those players back. I too was thinking about next years free agents, with Granderson making a ton of sense for the sox in the near short term, or a guy like Beltran. -

QUOTE (hi8is @ Jul 21, 2013 -> 04:34 AM) Well, The Great Peavy Sweepstakes has indeed begun. So far potential suitors seem to be who... - Nationals - Cardnals - Yankees - Diamondbacks - Rangers - O's - Blue Jays - Red Sox Despite reports - my money is on St. Louis or Arizona. ( Oddly enough... the same two teams who are denying any interest - LOL ) It makes sense that not every team wants their interest publicized, hoping the price in terms of prospects doesn't get crazy high. The greater number of teams, the more desperate some will be to overpay. It'll be interesting to see what scouts are still around today, or for Jakes next start. -

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jul 20, 2013 -> 03:00 PM) Buster Olney @Buster_ESPN 31m Red Sox are doing background work on Jake Peavy, who pitches against AT today. Arizona, SF, Colorado also in the discussions. If they are doing background work on Peavy, they should like what they find. Garin Cecchini would be a nice get from them as part of a package. -
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 20, 2013 -> 04:39 AM) Would you accept Glasnow and Kingham for Rios? Forget the 2 weird shortstops for a minute. Yes but the Pirates wouldn't.
-
QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 20, 2013 -> 05:17 AM) If I were the GM no. While the value is there IMO the Sox need to get a bat back in return. 2 SPs, with all the depth we have at SP is overkill to me. Glasnow and Dickerson or Bell would be something I'd accept. *waits for "you can never have too much starting pitching" comments* Those two pitchers would be great value for Rios. The Sox need talent and should take it where they can get it. With Crain and Peavy, they could then target position players. With the Pirates, at least, their prospect strength is in pitching. Hanson or Polanco would be nice but probably not available for Rios.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 11:08 PM) I just read a tweet, forgot from who, that RV said that Crain will go on a rehab assignment before coming back to the big club. Thanks. Makes sense. Shouldn't be a long rehab. A Few games tops.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 10:01 PM) Things could definitely be interesting with them. Any contender can use a healthy Jesse. He was placed on the 15 day DL retro to 6-30. He's eligible to come off. Any word when?
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 09:59 PM) Andrew Bailey is out for the season for the BoSox with a torn labrum. Crain & Lindstrom's price just went up for the Red Sox. They desperately need some bullpen help. Just beat me.
-
Andrew Bailey needs shoulder surgery. Out for season. A healthy Crain is definitely needed in Boston
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 04:40 PM) This looks a lot like those guys to me... The chalk outlines are the definition of traceable though. You need big $$ signs in those outlines. "Untradeable", my bad, if its a word.
-
Seeing how the Pirates gave Josh Bell a $5 mill. signing bonus a few years back, that should put things in perspective how much the Sox will need to include for a deal if they want (and they should want) top prospects. Something like $4 mill. for Rios and $6 mill. for Alexei.
-
QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 02:52 PM) Except in a blockbuster, which it could be considered. Also, it is pretty much just his speculation, nothing there with any sources to back up his opinion. True enough. Hanson as a SS might be hard to get. Yet there is word that he may not stick at SS, and have to move to 2b. He's had a ton of errors this year, like 24 so far.
-
FWIW, Marc Hulet at MLB Trade Rumors has a few tidbits. Saying basically Hanson, Polanco and Glasgow would be off the table. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/07/pros...trade-bait.html

QUOTE (daggins @ Jul 19, 2013 -> 01:07 PM) I think for Rios, a second tier prospect like Kingham or Bell, plus a couple AAA pseudo prospects should be fine. Like, Kingham, Pimentel and Lambo for Rios and some cash. I mean who knows its all conjecture but theres about a half dozen names in play for prospects and definitely some names to get stoked about. I think you're right that Rios alone won't net Hanson or Polanco [esp. with word that offers for Rios haven't been what the sox thought they'd be]. Kingham would be a guy to target for Rios, plus two other lower tier guys like you said. If Ramirez was added, then I could see Hanson being part of a 2 for 2 swap. It might boil down to what STL would offer for Alexei if PIT would include Hanson. Basically, only 2 SS prospects might be in play this deadline-Hanson and Sardinas. If the Rangers get Garza, then Crain alone probably won't net Sardinas.
-
I absolutely believe LA would trade Pederson to fill holes they have. They have 3 untraceable OFers in Kemp, Crawford and Ethier to go with Puig. Whether the sox have what they need... Yet Pederson would be a guy to build around for the sox.
-
either Polanco or Hanson should be the headliner for a Rios deal. I'd like Polanco, (as long as the Sox could trade for Luis Sardinas in a separate deal with Texas). The second guy Nick Kingham if Alexei is included. Or if Kingman is off the table, two guys with upside like Tyler Glasgow and Clay Holmes. I wouldn't have a problem including some cash with Rios because its like spending money on a free agent. Instead of a vet, it's for a consensus top 50 prospect. Those guys are more likely to pan out and are more valuable long term for the Sox than an overpriced vet.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 17, 2013 -> 02:47 PM) Middlebrooks was sort of a fluky story last year. There's no way Middlebrooks is actually ahead of him. He might get a crack at taking the job back, but they will have no second thoughts about dealing him. Middlebrooks has been hurt this year. Going into 2012, he was the Red Sox #1 Prospect and #56 overall. If the Red Sox made him available this deadline I'd take a flyer on him returning to form.
