  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 04:58 PM) That would be an amazing trade for the Sox From that earlier article quoting Charlie Manuel, he knows the window for the Phils to win is 2-3 years. Quentin would be amazing get for them, with his power, OBP and RH bat. I wouldn't expect a deal like what the writer Murphy proposed. But something with Brown would be very nice.
  2. Danny Knobler of CBS Sports tweeted that the Red Sox would certainly try for Quentin if he became available. It sure seems the market may be right to strike a deal. Esp. if major league ready pieces were part of a deal for Carlos--thinking Brown from the Phils or Reddick and a SP like Kyle Weiland from Boston. Then the sox would still be competitive for 2011. http://twitter.com/#!/DKnobler/statuse...605972046422016
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 04:48 PM) I'd take that in a heartbeat. It's interesting that a lot of his readers like Quentin more than Pence. And some feel that Brown isn't all that. While they feel that all 3 would be way too much, one guy said Brown and Kendrick might be worth it for Q. Another guy said Brown, one of the "3 baby aces" [thinking May, Colvin or Cosart] and a lesser prospect.
  4. The Daily News writer covering the Phils proposed a Brown, Singleton and Cosart deal for Carlos on Tues. http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/phillie...the-farm--.html It was interesting to see the 61 comments on his article. Would a 1 for 1 deal be that far fetched?
  5. From the sounds of it, the Phils know they have a 2-3 year window to win. Whether that means they'd do a Brown for Quentin deal, who knows. If I were the Sox, I'd do it. http://www.csnphilly.com/07/27/11/Phillies...&feedID=704
  6. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 28, 2011 -> 06:22 AM) What players are we currently looking at with the Phillies? Obviously, Dominic Brown's the name always mentioned, but is there anyone else in play as a possibility? More "major league ready" prospects under club control for 6 years? The Phils have 3 SP's in A+ ball who are their top 5-6 prospects. May, Colvin and Cosart; The lefty hitter Singleton also would look good-he's playing LF but is more of a 1b man. Supposedly, after their top 5-6 the talent is a big drop off.
  7. More recent updates. The guy seems to think the only snag is the $ and what prospects the Brewers are sending. We'll see... http://twitter.com/#!/MrFantasyExpert
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 07:05 PM) Its more than background work.... Do tell...
  9. Add me to the list that this isn't bad. Frasor solidifies the sox pen for 2011 and next year. Stewart provides SP depth that replaces Jackson for 2012 [not that Stewart will be pitching but give the sox another option]. Teahen's gone. And more moves can still be made.
  10. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 03:19 PM) KW clearly has naked pictures of Reinsdorf or something. "All In" to possible youth movement in 6 months? Someone needs to not keep their job, and it isnt Ozzie. The sox can make trades and still be competitive-it's not all or nothing. A youth movement means a rebuilding that would take years for them to compete. In the AL Central, the sox could trade half their major league roster and still compete in the Central.
  11. With the limited innings Thornton has been used in July, I wonder if he might not be hurting a bit. The Sox do owe him $11 mill. for the next 2 years. I wouldn't be surprised to see him moved, if they intend to keep Sale in the bullpen, before that $11 mill. is wasted on a set up man, even a stellar set up man. If the plan is to move Sale into the rotation, then the sox keep Matt.
  12. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 01:15 PM) This is awesome. Brent Morel actually posts here. What's goin' on? Why do you make Jeff Francoeur look like a disciplined hitter? Morel's hitting .250 in his 1st year in the bigs with only a 11.5 % Strikeout rate. He's not overmatched. He's hit in every spot in the minors and will only improve his SLG. His bat should be fine going forward, esp. with his glove, even if he doesn't walk much. The only reason his bat is an issue this year is because Dunn and Rios have been awful, and everyone else besides PK hitting less than their career norms.
  13. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 01:44 PM) A "decent" package? The Phillies aren't trading any of those guys for CQ, let alone two of them. Especially with all the wear and tear on Oswalt's arm and Hamels hitting FA after next season. Define "more than fine"? If the Sox are trading away Q, they shouldn't give him away. But a package of 2 solid SP prospects, or one of those with a solid position player prospect, is probably close to what Q is worth. I'd expect Morel to hit similar to what he did in W/S in '09--.280 avg, .330 OBP, with 20 + 2b's, 10-15 HR's. With his stellar D, the sox don't need an upgrade at 3b for 2012 http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/pro...p?P=Brent-Morel
  14. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 06:08 AM) I'd have no problem with KW selling some farm for an impact bat to man 3B for a while. I think our farm is starting to get stacked. Brent Morel should be more than fine for 2012.
  15. QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Jul 26, 2011 -> 12:26 AM) From Joel Sherman's Twitter: "Heard #Whitesox scouts are spending a lot of time on systems of #Yankees #Redsox #Phillies in case they sell at deadline" Yankees really have nothing that would get me that excited, Montero is coming back to Earth and they wont trade their good pitching spects. Romine would be pretty good, but Yanks see him as their C of the future. Red Sox are going to have a crunch on their 40 man roster at the end of the season so they may be willing to give up a little more major league ready talent since the Sox have the room. The Phillies could probably provide the best talent and probably only figure in if the Sox are going to blow up the bullpen or move Quentin. Quentin could bring back a pretty good haul from the phils, though the prospects would likely all be in A ball this season. If the sox dealt with the Phils, the likely targets would be A+ SP's May, Cosart and Colvin. All are 21, 22 with good numbers. The sox are thin in SP in the A+, AA levels. Getting 2 of the 3 would be a decent package.
  16. QUOTE (lasttriptotulsa @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 01:19 PM) We will for sure have Jackson and Pierre off the books next year even if this deal doesn't go down. I'm not sure on their exact salaries but I think Jackson and Pierre are about $8,000,000 each. Combine that with Buehrle's 14,000,000 and that's $30,000,000 off the books right there. Plus, I feel CQ will be traded. If they can shed Teahen's contract, that's just icing on the cake, but I don't think this current rumored trade is the best way to do it. Their should be money in there to re-sign Buehrle cause I don't think he will try to break the bank. I can't imagine JR letting Buehrle walk. Even if KW doesn't want to re-sign Buehrle (I have no idea his thoughts), I see JR doing like he did with Frank Thomas around 2002, when Frank and JR sat down and hashed out a deal without KW. Seeing what PK has done this year, I too think getting a deal done for Mark is on for the offseason. I don't think this would be a salary dump only. Like I said, Frasor would help the bullpen. Yet the Teahen savings does make a difference. And more deals could be made as well. If not by the deadline, Quentin in the off-season makes sense.
  17. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 27, 2011 -> 01:13 PM) 5+ years of Hudson. 5+. It was an awful deal anyway you try and slice it. I said less awful. The 1 1/2 yrs Jackson gave have been decent. He's given the sox a chance to win each time out. And Frasor also could be good for the next 1 1/2 yrs, ala what Crain has done so far this year. It doesn't make the Hudson deal a wash-far from it. But overall, this proposed JAckson deal has some merit and benefit for the sox. Building the bullpen, also helps the SP. Plus, subtracting Teahen.
  18. Lost in the discussion could be a way of finding enough cash to sign Mark Buerhle after this year. The savings of both E-Jax and Teahen for the rest of this year, plus next for Teahen, even after factoring Frasor's option, could help. It'll take more. But it's a start.
  19. For all the bashing, if this trade does go through, it actually solidifies the sox bullpen for 2011 and 2012. And probably makes them stronger for both years. The sox should pick up Frasor's option for $3.75 mill. And with a rock solid arm like Frasor, a guy who's been better than Jesse Crain in recent years, who can get both lefties and righties out, moving Sale to the rotation next year makes sense. It would make the sox weak in SP for this year, with the 6 man gone. Yet everyone expected JAckson to be moved. It was time to get something for him. It actually makes the Hudson trade less awful. It would mean 1 1/2 yrs of Jackson [which he did better than expected], 1 1/2 yrs of Frasor [a solid bet to do well], one less year of Teahen, and then a possible pick as Type B after 2012 for Hudson. It's still a bad trade in hindsight. Yet it's probably less awful if this does go through. The sox hitting needs to pick up anyway for them to make any moves for the playoffs this year. As far as TOR is concerned, the Cards prob. want someone in the Jays system for Rasmus + Jackson. Not much the Sox can do about what STL wants, except get a better farm system. STL prob. wants too much for Rasmus after JAckson + for the sox to bite. Could the Sox get more for Jackson? Probably as far as prospects are concerned. But a deal that helps the sox this year and next? Doubtful. They've had feelers out for a while now to gauge the market. It's not just Kenny calling the shots, seeing what the market is.
  20. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 25, 2011 -> 03:00 AM) You do the deal and don't look back. Maybe it was because I was a big fan of his as a prospect, but I LOVE Colby Rasmus. And for those saying he is Alex Rios, only in underachieving talent. Rasmus isn't lazy, has better plate discipline, not to mention cost controlled and is only 24 (I will say Rios is the better fielder though). Both were considered "bad attitude" guys (as well as A.J.) at one time too. Rasmus, Viciedo, Beckham, Sale, (maybe Morel for his defense) is a nice, cost controlled, building block with other guys the sox see fit to build around as well. I agree. Of course depending on what the cost is. I'm still of the mind that if the Sox somehow get Rasmus, that Carlos also will be dealt. For the reason that the sox do need to get young, cost controlled building blocks, at whatever spots they can. And if the sox traded Jackson and Quentin, they need to get those building blocks. Rasmus would at least look the part of a "building block", esp. if he returns to his 2010 form. Besides Viciedo, the sox position player minor league talent looks real thin. If Carlos can net the sox 2 pieces for the major league roster now-say a position player and a pitcher, with a prospect, the overall effect of the Jackson and Quentin trades would be minimal for this year. Yet would set the sox up for the next 3-4 years. The sox can be "sellers" without sacrificing this season. Which is still salvageable.
  21. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jul 24, 2011 -> 09:11 PM) Sure. I'm just giving my opinion on this particular rumor. I don't even think it's legit to be honest. I've never been an Edwin Jackson fan. And Matt's stock has dropped some this year. And he's making upwards of $6 million starting next year. That's a lot for a guy that crapped his pants when he was asked to close. But in the NL, Thornton could be gold. Hell, I could be gold in the NL.
  22. The Sox getting Rasmus would make moving Quentin more likely. If reports were true that the sox have been scouting the Red sox major league team for a deal involving Quentin, a deal for the Red Sox Josh Reddick and SP Kyle Weiland makes sense. Reddick likely will come down to earth this year. Yet should be set for 2012. Weiland could take over for Jackson in the rotation.
  23. By itself, a swap of Viciedo for Quentin won't improve the sox offense. But the sox aren't doing anything without Dunn, Rios, Pierre and Beckham swinging better in the 2nd half anyway. If Carlos can net the right pieces, it might be a neutral trade now, but a net gain in the long run. Interesting that Carlos is hitting now at about his career avgs in AVG, OBP and SLG.
  24. Seeing the Cafardo article, I could see the sox doing a Beachy trade involving Quentin. It would solve the problem of where to put Viciedo. It would also allow the Sox to trade Edwin Jackson for solid position player prospects, [the best package the sox can get for Edwin, as he does have value for a team looking for SP] rather than take draft picks for him after 2011 by offering him arb. [it's a risk to even offer him arb though, one that the Sox have to take, potentially losing Hudson for nothing]. At worst, Beachy would provide immediate RH bullpen help, and slide into the rotation next year, as he started in the bullpen this year in AA and in the past http://www.thebaseballcube.com/profile.asp?P=Brandon-Beachey . Everyone would love to trade a Rios, Pierre, Dunn when they're playing poorly. But the sox are stuck with some big contracts and need young position player prospects to challenge for spots. Quentin is having a good year. Yet he's only got a 1-1/2 years left with the sox before he walks away for nothing. The sox will be on the hook for $7, 8 mill for 2012, and a bad 2012 and the sox won't offer him arb. The sox have few position player prospects now in the upper minors besides Viciedo. A trade that could net the sox one or two sure things, without weakening the sox overall [Viciedo should be able to match Carlos' AVG and SLg, certainly not his OBP, and a Beachy replacing Jackson in the rotation should be a wash], and that offers them payroll relief to acquire a Pierre replacement for the OF and to hit near the top of the order--prob. in the offseason, not now, wouldn't be all bad.
  25. While the platoon will wait, I can virtually guarantee that Milledge will be coming into the game in the 8th and 9th innings for defensive purposes. And to keep Carlos healthy.
