  1. The sox will add another OFer who has more talent than Tyner. They won't stick with what they have
  2. The sox should try and sign him to an incentive laden deal based on innings pitched. Give him a set base and bonuses for being able to throw. It seems like something that would be doable and worth the risk.
  3. QUOTE(SoxPride56 @ Dec 11, 2007 -> 01:53 PM) As I think others in this discussion have said, I am not worried about Danks and Floyd as our number 4 and 5 starters, what I am worried about is Jose being our number 3 starter. I'd be more worried if Jose completely changed how he threw ala Freddy Garcia. When Jose threw at the end of 2007, it was w/ the same zip he had when he was one of the best SP's in the bigs. If the sox are in playoff contention, IMO, Jose will be pitching better than a #3.
  4. Whether or not Danks and Floyd can be #1-3 starters is besides the point going into 2008. They need to be effective in the 4th and 5th spots. KW's "hype" is another man's confidence booster. Danks and Floyd can read KW's and Ozzie's comments about not worrying about the starting pitching and continue working out getting ready for the season. If both Danks and Floyd "trust their stuff" ie not nibbling, attacking hitters, not walking guys, they should be fine. My only concern is if they tire late in the year after racking up innings in the bigs. Yet Gio should be ready by late 2008 to come up if needed. Gio's not a bad backup plan. Not to mention Egbert or Broadway as 2nd or 3rd choices.
  5. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Dec 9, 2007 -> 11:21 PM) So why would Anaheim even bother? Just to make headlines? The Angels need protection for Vlad, and to advance in the playoffs. I'm not buying that Torii Hunter is the answer. Pk could make a lot of sense for them. Whether the sox would do it... With the changes the Tigers and the AL team that trades for Johan, the sox need to extend their 2, 3 yr window to win. Trading PK would and should net multiple peices, such as Kotchman and another starter.
  6. With bullpen help so scarce a commodity, should the sox pay Vizcaino a David Riske type deal [3 yrs, $13 mill] to come back? He's not the shut down guy you'd like to have in the 8th inning. Yet he should put up decent numbers. And he should be fairly reliable. With Luis in the fold, the sox could then use one of their arms like MacDougal in a trade. Ozzie has talked about how the sox missed Luis in 2006. While his BB/ K numbers don't look good last yr, most of that was his first half [33 BB/ 29 K's]. While it may be overpaying in terms of dollars like Linebrink, it would give the sox flexibility to make other deals [such as Aardsma, Masset, Mac] and give time to see if any other young guys surprise in spring training. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/spli...ng3&three=1
  7. QUOTE(G&T @ Dec 9, 2007 -> 01:18 AM) So they wouldn't want a package with Crede involved? If Crede was healthy, yes. The Angels are trying to build a team w/o holes ala Boston and the Yankees. Crede would be too big a question mark for what the Angels are trying to do.
  8. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Dec 9, 2007 -> 01:15 AM) So I guess we're hoping like hell that the Angels decide to acquire Scott Rolen. I still like the idea of making a run at Reggie Willits if Figgins isn't available though. Or the Angels get Tejeda. I like Willits as well. The Angels should deal him. I could see the Angels wanting a bullpen arm for 2008. MacDougal?
  9. from Rosenthal: scroll down to 2nd story. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7541832 Plan B for the Cubs: Figgins? Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts is the equivalent of a teacher's pet. Alas, being a favorite of owner Peter Angelos might only ensure that Roberts remains stuck in Baltimore. For all the talk about Angelos granting Andy MacPhail more authority than previous Orioles executives, it will be "man bites dog" material if he allows MacPhail to send Roberts to the Cubs. A more realistic target for the Cubs might be the Angels' Chone Figgins. Like Roberts, Figgins is a switch-hitter and dynamic leadoff man. The difference is, Figgins also plays third base and outfield. One problem: Figgins isn't currently available. The Angels are telling teams that they will trade Figgins only if they can find a replacement at third. ---Could be another name to throw out there for CF and hit leadoff. Also could play both 3b and 2b to give the rookies Fields and Richar a rest. Not sure what the Angels would want for Figgins. But the Angels would need a definite upgrade over Figgins to trade him. Not sure who or if the Angels are targeting anyone for 3b via trade. I know they want to add more pop--Hunter alone isn't much of an upgrade. They could use on of their SP's for a 3b man.
  10. It's a stupid column to write about. The Winter meetings didn't take into account the sox getting Orlando Cabrera and signing Linebrink. The only thing the sox did was acquire Quentin. A better measure of how the sox [or any team] will improve from 2007 to 2008 is in the entire offseason. BTW--wasn't Hunter signed before the meetings began?
  11. The Orioles seeming intent on trading Roberts and Tejada could be because of the Mitchell report. Roberts jumped from 4 HR's in 640 ab's to 18 hr's in 560 ab's from 2004 to 2005. Would his possible use of performing enhancing drugs cause anyone to think twice about going after him? http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stats?playerId=4773
  12. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 10:52 PM) If you are talking to me, I know. I just like the Fuk U Dome in reference to the metrodome I was just throwing it out there, to no one in particular.
  13. IIRC, his name is pronounced Fu-Koo-Doh-me.
  14. It seems that Anderson's agent just confirmed that his struggles weren't caused by Ozzie and the sox.
  15. From Williams---"And what we have started this season, I am proud of. Where we are headed is right toward being a well-rounded baseball team in all facets of the game.'' Williams isn't done adding to this team. He knows the sox need to improve just like all the Xbox GM's around here.
  16. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 12:30 AM) It's possible, but the White Sox usually come in second place or lower in bidding wars. I could see this time Kenny pulling an LA Angels move on Fukudome like they did on Hunter with a big deal at the last minute. While I wouldn't normally see KW going all out, the Torri Hunter non-deal seemed to hit him hard. And it just might make him outbid another team for once. Or twice [Linebrink was 1st].
  17. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 03:07 AM) Just curious, to all advocates of bringing Roberts in...2 parter... 1. What will it cost? 2. How much does Roberts' addition improve the Sox chance of making the postseason next year? again, just curious First you find out what the cost is. Then you'd have to see if the price was worth it in terms talent. No one knows what the O's are asking for Roberts though. The only names I've heard with the Cubs were Hill/ Marshall and Theriot for Roberts.
  18. the sox should definitely kick the tires on Roberts. Even though I like Richar, Roberts would be a nice fit on the south side
  19. QUOTE(joesaiditstrue @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 10:49 AM) do you honestly think the sox will pay cabrera what he'll be worth in 2 years? he could get a 20+ for 7-8 years from the right team, look what soriano got and he's older and a lesser player offensively and defensively. i don't see the sox paying anywhere close to that for any player here's what i don't understand about what this team does with their money. ultimately its about winning it all, and with that being the case, why not overspend on guys who are basically a sure thing (Arod for example, Santana when he hits FA, Cabrera in FA, etc.) when you know for a fact having these kinds of players will most certainly get you into the playoffs and possibly beyond whats the point of saving money if you're not building a team that can win? i don't see the point, it's ridiculous The sox are spending money. Did they not re-sign MB, Dye, AJ? Overpay to sign Linebrink? It's one thing to spend money. It's another to overpay so much [in terms of cash and young talent via trade] that it keeps you from improving the team for the next 5, 10 yrs. The sox may be put into the position of trading a guy like Pk to make up ground in the AL with Detroit and the Red sox w/ Santana because free agency isn't all that.
  20. I have a hard time believing Dye called up Kenny to rag him out. Kenny's main thrust to Aj, Dye and MB still holds true--That Kenny wants to contend in 2008 and 2009 not blow up the team. There is still time to get better. Hunter was signed to a ridiculous offer. The sox had the 2nd best.IMO, Detroit will get burned by the MCab deal. Esp when MCab can sign with the Sox in 2 yrs.
  21. I could see the sox taking a flyer on Luis Ayala for Uribe and another arm like Aarsdma. He missed 2006 due to injury but came back in 2007 and threw 44 innings with a low 3.00 ERA. He had posted sub 3.00 ERA's in 2005 and 2004. But no Rauch.
  22. 'We're more looking at the free-agent route than the trade route right now,'' Williams said. Per The Sun Times, 12-4-07 Looks like Fukudome or Rowand. Someone to play CF though for sure.
  23. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 03:32 AM) I don't think I'd call Quentin Bay. Bay has had a couple all star seasons already. I'm saying they seem like very similar type of players, tools, etc. The sox should get someone with more speed and defense, and play CF.
  24. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 01:19 AM) And they forget that Quentin struggled in the majors in 2007. He was hurt, had surgery and may not be 100% for spring training. Its why I feel KW definitely will now get a CF. I like the Quentin trade, but I wouldn't be surprised if it takes him a while to put up good numbers. It would be great if he could come in and put up the numbers a lot think he's capable of right away, but I think that's unlikely. That's why I think Rogers' article makes some sense as far as a platoon out in LF. The other concern for Quentin is he seems to have been hurt for a lot of the past several years. Hopefully he can overcome this. I agree 100%. Quentin is a very low risk, inexpensive move. Yet he shouldn't be looked at [for the beginning of 2008 at least] as anything more than a LF platoon with Owens, due to your concerns you stated. The sox still have work to do.
  25. QUOTE(BearSox @ Dec 3, 2007 -> 11:37 PM) Hell, I'd trade Dye to whatever team wants him, move Quentin to RF, and have Bay in LF. Bay > Dye. Dye is fine in RF. He's not going anywhere unless the sox are 20 games out come the deadline.
