  1. QUOTE(Jeremy @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 01:13 AM) He's never hit for much power or drawn many walks in the minors so his average might continue to come up but otherwise, what you see is what you get. There is no sane reason why Gonzalez, Terrero, or Owens is a major league ball player. This shows you how pathetic our farm system is. I don't think any of them have a job on virtually ANY other team in baseball.
  2. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 20, 2007 -> 07:23 AM) All of these outfields look simply horrible. I hate to say it- but we may consider resigning Dye to a 3 yr deal and DH him in the 3rd yr when Thome is gone... With two other good outfielders in Center and Left (have no clue who it will be) we may be able to get away with it defensively. The question is, will Dye sign a 3yr/24m dollar deal with us? In this market it may be a bargain if he can get his sh&* back together and start to hit again. Otherwise, we are stuck overspending for a Rowand or Hunter (and still need to address our SS and 2B assuming Guch leaves) and pray to god that Sweeney is ready or risk it all on Erstad staying healthy which would be a major risk. At this point I think BA is out of the picture and I have the feeling Fields is staying at 3B. If we need to fill our outfield with the guys we currently have we're in major trouble. The only other option I see is to trade Garland for a SS and OF in some type of package deal?
  3. QUOTE(briguy27 @ Jul 19, 2007 -> 10:55 PM) Yeah, way to make it look like you robbed a HR. And I said it would be 5-3, but I didn't know Cy Bukvich was comin' in. Our bullpen is soooooo bad. It's amazing we got out of that inning with no runs scoring.
  4. If you look at our outfield today (Owens, Gonzalez, Mackowiak, Dye and Terrero) Mackowiak is not a bad backup, and I have to believe Dye is going to have a few more decent years in him despite his horrible performance this year. Let's face it- almost NONE of these guys belong on a big league roster. Not even the Pirates, Royals (or White Sox LOL) So, my question posed to this forum, is, (keeping in mind our budget constraints) what does your IDEAL outfield look like in 2008?? I haven't looked hard at the FA class but clearly we're going to need to do something there. Otherwise we're looking at Pods and Erstad again... Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Mackowiak back and if Dye would agree to a 2 yr deal for about 6-7 M per we'd have to think about it considering how ridiculous the FA market is getting. (not going to happen) I realize its sexy now to bash Dye but my guess is the guy has been pretty hurt and is now just starting to show some signs of being back to his old self. Anyway, do you have Sweeney and Anderson playing next year along with a FA signing? Our outfield is so horrible right now it's embarassing to march out guys like Owens, Terrero or Gonzalez (and Dye all year as well unfortunately)... Looking forward to hearing what you guys think we can afford and what would your ideal outfield look like next year???
  5. QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 13, 2007 -> 07:01 PM) Terrero has 32 K's in 101 at-bats Our outfield is a joke right now. It appears as if Sox Talk has packed it in for the year? 7 game posts half way through the ballgame?? :
  6. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 12, 2007 -> 12:15 AM) that's my fear...but I like the fact that we ended the first half on a high note. Guys got a much needed rest and a chance to put the first half to rest. At least that's my hope. I'm not saying they're going to make a run. I just want to see a competetive team. Take a look at our current outfield: 23 Jermaine Dye R/R 6-5 240 01/28/74 26 Andy Gonzalez R/R 6-2 190 12/15/81 10 Rob Mackowiak L/R 5-11 195 06/20/76 7 Jerry Owens L/L 6-3 190 02/16/81 30 Luis Terrero Do you see one GOOD player in there? Pretty tough to win with this group as well as how our bullpen has performed.
  7. If we had a healthy Crede, Erstad, Podsednik, Dye and a bullpen that could hold a lead in the 7th and 8th inning I would say there is an outside chance since it is possible for the division winner to only have 90-92 wins based on the division beating each other up down the stretch. So, in other words, ballgame over
  8. This would have been a disaster if they didn't resign him. Thank God Almighty as the Sox management does actually appear to have some common sense. MB is a guy who we will be talking about extending 2-3 yrs from now as well, I think he will be a 220+ game winner, good move.
  9. Great performance by Javy. Hats off to him- great to see him put it together with the stuff he has of late.
  10. I can't imagine us getting much for BA unless it was some type of package deal. I'd rather see him than Owens up to see what we have for the second half since this season is over. Dealing BA just to deal him would be a dumb move unless he was a piece of a larger puzzle that made sense...
  11. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 08:56 PM) And you really feel like you can make an accurate assessment of a player after 6 IP? I haven't given up hope on the guy however his personality doesn't inspire me to believe he has the guts to go after people up here. I thought that of the guy in ST and still do. If he can stop being afraid of the bat and pitch through the tough times then he has a chance. I wish he'd show a bit more balls and throw less balls, however.
  12. QUOTE(DonnyDevito @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 08:49 PM) like previously mentioned, he just doesn't have the gusto upstairs to get it done. you hate to rule out a 24 year old but he's been pitching in the majors for 3-4 years. i know he hasn't pitched consistently but remember how the Phillies brought him up way too early? welp, that's what did him in. he should never have pitched in the majors at 20 years old or however old he was when Philly first brought him up. gavin has a ML fastball and curveball but that doesn't mean a thing if he continues to let batters get in his head. Garland got roughed up when he was 20 and turned out ok. It's just a matter of him not being a fighter. I realize he may be a laid back guy, but have you seen any emotion out of the guy? I mean, doesn't having some balls and being competitive count for anything??
  13. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 08:48 PM) What conclusions can we draw of Floyd from this start? Not anything concerning his career, but his immediate future. I'd say, for one, he can't locate his fastball anywhere but don't the middle. Second problem, his curveball can't find the plate. The last is concern is why didn't he incorporate a changeup or slider more? If this is an example of the most major league ready pitcher in our system, we're in more trouble than anyone thought. This was supposed to be our organization's strength. NICE, Floyd waited until the 6th inning to finally pitch. Too bad he's losing 6-0. I haven't seen one changeup all night- I haven't been watching every pitch, however, and thankfully.
  14. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 08:27 PM) there is some mighty nice talent seated behind the sox dugout tonight. The blonde that keeps waving at the camera is a pig, don't know what you're looking at! :-)
  15. Embarassing- what a joke how AAA pitchers can just dominate us- I bet any starter in Rochester (Twins Minor League Team) could beat us 7 out of 10 times.
  16. Has Gavin thrown his changeup yet? I thought that was a great out pitch he has...Seems as if he is featuring the fastball/curve- I haven't seen any changes of the pitches I've seen him throw...
  17. I was saying this in ST but have you seen Gavin speak? His body language and tone make him seem like a 6 foot 5 wus boy with absolutely no balls whatsoever. I don't think he has the head to compete- he clearly has the stuff- but once he gets rattled out there its as if he just gives in and that's that. My .02
  18. You'd think these guys would realize by now he can't get his breaking ball over. Garza has throw about 20 meatballs and Gavin 1. And we're down 3-0. Pretty much the story of the season.
  19. Dye looks so lost at the plate. You can groove him a fastball without worry
  20. QUOTE(29thandPoplar @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 07:46 PM) Neither JD. He (in my opinion) did not bear down vs. Cudyher and he walked him. He threw a rolling curve ball which Morneau hit out but my beef on that is why call that pitch, it was the absolute wrong time to slow Morneau's bat down especially after he couldn't get around on Floyd's fastball. Agreed 100%. He should have just attacked him and don't be afraid of the bat. That curve ball is a nasty pitch but there is no reason to throw it when he looked a little bit off on his fastball.
  21. QUOTE(Brian @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 07:45 PM) Luis Castillo is old and can't run anymore. I've never seen a team get more infield hits than the Twins
  22. QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 07:36 PM) Not that I'm rooting for players to get hurt, but wouldn't you rather see Mauer at catcher forcing Garza to bat? Knowing the Twins they'd put Punto back there and not miss a beat
  23. QUOTE(goblue5699 @ Jul 6, 2007 -> 07:25 PM) Danks gave up a 3 run homer to Morneau in his debut this year, he turned out alright. The kid has good stuff but needs to know how to attack Cuddyer there- that's an inexcusable walk with Morneau on deck.
  24. Hawk keeps saying this is a big series for us. Am I missing something?
