Thanks- I wasn't ripping on him- just wondering what people see in the guy...I've never seen him play and there was nothing on you tube either. I found it interesting that he was one of 4 supposed goals KW had in the off season...

Carlos Quentin's Lifetime Stats: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7485 Am I missing something here? Why are we so high on him? What is his upside? I realize he has been hurt and is pretty much a rookie but what do we really know about him?

Doesn't anyone else see how Prior's body (and notably, legs) have shrunk considerably since the end of the 2004 season??? Don't you guys think he is one of the guys who was clearly juicing and now has nothing left since he can't juice any longer?? The guy has nothing left. The only guy that shrunk more after the 04 season was Giambi. Colon or Garcia's probability of success vs. Prior in 2008 is about a million percent better, and we all know what big risks those two guys are.
-
Here is a guy who is a shell of his former self...physically as well. Has anyone wondered why he's dropped so much weight in those legs which USED to be tree trunks and now look like those of a ballet dancer?? And his agent is blowing smoke about not even wanting a 2 yr deal- as he knows no team in their right mind would even consider giving that to him, he knows the best he will get is a one yr deal, unless there are stupider teams out there than I even think... However, some stupid team will probably give him a one year deal and I hope it's not the Sox as I cannot envision this guy ever pitching in the bigs again. It's too bad as this guy really had some incredible talent with mechanics which appeared to be that of a Tom Seaver. I am 100% surprised he wasn't named in the Mitchell report, he must have covered his tracks and kept it to himself when he was juicing.

Ok, it's clear the offseason strategy has fallen through. It's too late to make any desperate moves and try to force a square peg into a round hole with some overpaid CF piece of garbage. I say we spend more $ on pitching, after all, isn't it that pitching and D wins championships? People fail to remember that our offense in 2005 was not any more potent as this offense is, even now with no CF (and maybe even LF to speak of). We don't necessarily need a Torii Hunter to win in the central. We need more pitching, better D, better baserunning, more speed and the bullpen to pitch like they are capable of. Here we go...ready??? I say we go with BA in CF this year. Screw it- I know Ozzie doesn't like him but tell him to deal with it. If he's healthy- he can probably hit .270 with 12 HR and 50 RBI and play GREAT D. I really do believe he can do it. He hit .257 in the second half of his rookie year so don't tell me this is a stretch for a full year for a more mature, talented player. He does have talent...anyone who says he doesn't is flat out missing the boat. In the end, we'd probably get those type of numbers from an Aaron Rowand anyway for $12 more million a year. I am not confident about our starting 5- it's a reach to say the least that we think our 3,4,5 are all going to have good years. A big reach. So, in my opinion, if we go down in flames next year it's not because we didn't get a CF in the FA market. With good starting pitching and bullpen this lineup can win- yes, even with our tough division. I am not saying we're going to compete next year. However, I am saying that getting a CF'er (ANY CF'er) would not change a thing about our chances this year. Let's hope these 2008 White Sox are like the 1990 White Sox and surprise everyone... Let the flaming begin...

Which Sox Player Would Win in a Fight??
JohnCangelosi replied to Marky Mark's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(bmags @ Nov 26, 2007 -> 03:36 AM) who are they fighting? A certain coach named "Ditka"... -
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 04:03 AM) I also have to imagine the Sox are going to pursue some type of insurance for the rotation this offseason; if I were a betting man, dare I say Freddy Garcia on about a 2-year, $12-16 mill deal? I don't see that happening it appears as if KW is OK with our current starters based on his comments in the trade interview the other day, saying "we'll support the younger starters with a great offense and by getting some bullpen help". Maybe he is being sly but I doubt it. After settling the CF position it seems as if the focus will be the bullpen and perhaps tidying up some backup spots and PERHAPS going out and getting a leadoff hitter, but who will we find that we can afford after paying Hunter 15M per that is worth anything? I am not sure why but something tells me we're going to go with Jerry Owens leading off in 2008, probably because we can't afford another option. Or we can resign Pods. LF Jerry Owens SS Orlando Cabrera DH Jim Thome 1B Paul Konerko RF Jermaine Dye CF Torii Hunter 3B Josh Fields C AJ Pierzynski 2B Danny Richar Not a bad lineup if Owens can perform and the older guys stay healthy (big question mark) but it's still a pretty old lineup, 2008 or bust.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 08:27 AM) Bobby Thigpen got his 57 saves on a really bad Sox team. Yeah, a really bad team that went 94-68 in 1990. If there was a wildcard that year we would have had it, wake up and smell the coffee.

Everyone is saying our first line of priority this offseason HAS to be upgrading the bullpen (poll on whitesox.com) and it seems to be the case here as well at SoxTalk.com... First of all, if you understand the strategy of "find out where everyone is going and go in the opposite direction" you understand it's usually the proper thing to do in many situations. I'll give an example just so I don't have to further explain that statement. Most people are dead broke. 5% of the people out there control 90%+ of the wealth. Point: Don't follow the herd mentality of getting a job, get taxed everyway till Sunday and then hoping you'll have enough at the end of the day. You won't. The herd tells you "get a job, work your way up, see what happens". Nonsense. Same thing goes for "consensus thinking" on many different subjects all across the board from the stock market to baseball. What if, instead of investing in 2-3 more bullpen arms we took the risk of thinking that Mac and Thornton are in for a good year next year? Perhaps we sign one of the Japanese bullpen prospects but just keep it there and spend our money elsewhere??? It seems to me that quite often bullpens can be great one year and suck the next (see 2005 for Cliff Politte, Neil Cotts and then 06) Last year was obviously a disaster in the pen and no question it was the worst in baseball for various reasons. I do think, however, when healthy (like Mac) these guys can be really tough. And I don't think we give up on them yet and completely retool this thing. Honestly, and I know am very much in the minority here, but I am OK with us just picking up one arm (perhaps from Japan) for our Pen and then addressing the other issues we need taken care of such as getting a second baseman and CF through FA and trades... OK, so there it is...let me have it... ;-)

Is this the worst year in your Soxfandom?
JohnCangelosi replied to Hideaway Lights's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I agree 100%. The 88 and 89 teams were pathetic to watch. Brian Gallagher lead us in hitting I think in 89. Brian FRIGGIN Gallagher!!!! That's how pathetic we were! (The good news is in 1990 we won 94 games, and if there was a wildcard that year we could have done some serious damage...so we can always hope for next year!) I will say this- this is the most disappointing team I can remember- with the 84 squad coming in at a close second. -
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Aug 9, 2007 -> 01:48 PM) Can somebody please PM at the moment DJ says something insightful about baseball? Other than his regurgitated version of what Hawk says? Because I don't think I've ever heard anything insightful from DJ. Someone brought up the 'knowledge' about the other team -- very rarely does DJ know a lick about the opposing team, other than when, say, Trot Nixon stands at the plate, he'll say "He's like Darin Erstad for us -- he's just a ballplayer." It's pathetic -- the two color men we have are absolutely brutal. AMEN TO THAT!!! 100% AGREED!!
-
First of all, I have always thought that Hawk doesn't respect DJ. You can just feel it. Nevertheless, you can hear the difference in Hawk's voice where he respects the insights his partner has, and that clearly is the case with Stone. It reminds me of the Hawk/Drysdale days back in the 80s when I was a kid. Personally I say we don't renew Singleton and put DJ with Farmer and hire Stone if possible. The last two games have been extremely fun to watch them work together and things have flowed incredibly well between the both of them. Unlike some in this forum I think Hawk is amongst the best. I live out of the country so I watch all games on MLB.TV and I see what the other teams have...very few are as good as Hawk if any. Interested to hear what others have thought about the last two games???

Sox Mailbag has some interesting tidbits

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Aug 6, 2007 -> 04:51 PM) YOU DO NOT KNOW THIS. You need to stop stating this s*** as fact because at this point in time NO ONE knows what the future holds for Joe Crede, he may never be able to play the field again for all we know. But Boras said Joe Crede was healthy as an Ox! -
For sure we will need to pay at least half of Jose's salary unless we swap overpaid bums with another team. If we cannot get anything for him in the waiver period, which I highly doubt we will, we should just put him on the DL and let him work through his personal issues (divorce etc) and see what he has in the spring. I still find it hard to believe he doesnt have arm problems or mental issues that a little time couldn't solve. No way does someone go from being one of the top pitchers in the league (which he was first half of 06) to the worst starter in the league seemingly overnight. Something else is going on here, whether its physical and/or mental I don't know but if we cannot get anything for him before the end of the year why not see if he can't be a 5th starter next year knowing most likely we're going to be dealing Garland in the offseason for a SS and OF??

QUOTE(RME JICO @ Aug 3, 2007 -> 11:01 PM) Cleveland was 5 over .500 at that point in 2005 and we are currently 9 under. That is a huge difference. The Sox were on pace for 106 wins at that point, which eventually corrected to 99. The Tigers are only on pace for 92 wins at this point. For us to even match that win total, we would have to go 42-11 (.792). Just say the Sox strung together 20 wins, they would still have to go 22-11 (.666). Boston with the best record in the league is winning at a .611 clip. So basically there is a 99.999999% chance that the Sox will not make the playoffs. I love it...42-11 and people are still bringing this point up. Yes, we will need to sweep both the Tigers and Indians over the next 6 days- and even then we'd still be in 4th place. The only possible way this could happen is if the whole division beats up on each other down the stretch while the White Sox get incredibly hot and the winner of the central needs 86 wins or so to get in...remember in 05 we lost like 7 or 8 in a row and the Indians won 6 or 7 in the same time span and made up half the ground just like that. We wont have that luxury as we need to count on 3 teams losing which is hard to happen when you consider these teams are going to be playing each other (someone has to win). When we run the table in August, then yes, I will say we have a CHANCE. ;-)

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 31, 2007 -> 07:59 PM) I do, but if he stays hot the rest of the year, he'll get a big contract from someone. I'd rather he stay in the .230 range, hit 25 homers, and we get him at a good rate. Yeah - hopefully we can lock him up in the next week or so. Assuming we don't what do you think the max he fetches in the offseason in yrs and dollars? -

Last year until Jose got hurt around the break, it was arguable he was the BEST pitcher in the league. He was THAT good- hitting his spots with good velocity- the awesome dropdown and that killer forkball... Today, he is perhaps the worst starter in the league. Unreal how quickly that happened. About a year ago, that contract KW had with Jose didn't look so bad, so remember that... All of that said, this BETTER be his last start- we should DL him and get him the surgery he needs or whatever so we can only pray to get rid of him or get some value out of him next year. After this start I can't imagine any team taking him in the offseason for the league minimum, much less $10M per... -
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 10:06 AM) Dye will want too many years and money. And Podsednik? Oh, no no no no no. I've been saying Don't be surprised if they're back! for awhile. I've meant it more as a crack about the organization but it seems they're willing to live up to it. How much do you think he's going to ask for/get? After this year I don't see too many teams looking at him like they would have after 2006- you can tell that very fact by the lack of offers for him prior to the trade deadline...
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 27, 2007 -> 09:43 AM) Why don't they just bring the whole team back? They seem to be pretty good. KW should be allowed to bring Pods back, provided that he's willing to resign the first time Pods gets hurt. How many times does a guy have to get hurt before you realize that is something that most likely will continue? Ehhhnnnnnnn. Buzzer rings. Offer up what you would do rather than just making a sarcastic comment- it would be nice to hear what other viable options are out there that you would deem worthy of pursuing...

A week ago or so I asked the question to this forum on what our 2008 outfield looked like. Needless to say, the responses were ugly and all over the place. The most popular option was probably to resign Rowand at a "home discount" which I don't necessarily see him agreeing to, but you never know. We're not going to pay Ichiro or Torii Hunter dollars either... But even if we were able to land Rowand, who would be pricey and a questionable move based on his up and down past performances, what does the rest of our outfield look like? I don't think Sweeney is ready, he is probably a 2009 starter, and still somewhat of a question mark. So that leaves us with what for 2008???? If we're going to scrap 2008 and just make it a rebuilding season, then we don't bother resigning Dye/Pods/Erstad and the like. If we are going to attempt at making a run, I think we at least have to CONSIDER resigning JD or Pods, and let me give you the argument here. 1) Hawk revealed yesterday that JD's knee has been bothering him all year and now it's getting back to normal. We've been seeing a little better D out there in right (He no longer looks like a 3 legged dog out there to me) and he also has swung the bat a BIT better of late. 2) JD still probably has 3 good years in him 3) WHO ELSE are we going to get on the FA market that is worth a sh&t? Why not take a chance that JD can get back to 2005-6 form for a nice discount? Again, if we're going to rebuild in 2008 then we go with Sweeney/Owens/Anderson/FA Signing perhaps 4) Now, I am not necessarily a fan of signing Pods again seeing how injury prone he is but should we roll the dice for another discount??? It at least needs to be pondered for a few minutes. When healthy the guy really does make things happen. Yesterday's game is a good example. It might be worth the $ to give it one more shot with some type of contingency plan. Go ahead and tear into me here. But when you DO, I want to hear your opinion of what we should do keeping in mind that we have a BUDGET to play with and I am not interested in signing FA's like that bum Dave Roberts who was supposedly a top outfield FA last year!!!! I want to compete next year and I don't see how we do it with Sweeney/Owens/Anderson out there in the outfield (not to mention those bums Terrero and Gonzalez)...

Talk Some S&*T J.D.!!!! -
QUOTE(vandy125 @ Jul 23, 2007 -> 08:59 AM) Let me start up the Owens bandwagon. Y'all can jump on later. I think that he is starting to learn to hit and to play this game. He may be a bit older, but that does not mean he can't be productive as long as he still has that speed. I think Owens is a 4th OF at best- yes, he does have great speed and is fun to watch on the base paths but I don't see him solving the problem of getting the bat taken out of his hands consistently anytime soon...
