  1. QUOTE(JorgeFabregas @ Mar 31, 2008 -> 12:57 PM) Yeah, no kidding. Is anyone else getting the blue screen of death with MLB.TV??? THIS IS BRUTAL!!!
  2. QUOTE(kwolf68 @ Mar 20, 2008 -> 12:41 PM) What poster is this in response to? It seemed every post in response to the thread in response to the original was right along your lines of thinking for the most part. Most said they didn't mind JR being smart with his money, didn't mind him making a profit, and credited him for not taking advantage of the fans like those owners in KC and Minnesota did. If it is your wish to engage in a debate/discussion about the morality of the corporate profit motive that is one thing, but this thread didn't seem to be calling out for such a discussion. And I have to laugh my ass off about the Obama/Hillary comment. Are you stuck in 1967? The mainstream Democratic Party has absolutely no problems with corporate profits. The life-blood of the Democratic Party is the same that fuels the Republican Party, and that IS corporate power...Anyone who believes the Democrats are about some sort of quasi-revolutionary agenda to overthrow corporate power and hand the means of ownership over to the workers is absolutely delusional and clueless and has listened to way too many Mike Savage monlogues. First, we know this common rap that most Sox fans believe we're too cheap (see: Aaron Rowand/Torii Hunter) and it's all JR's fault. This is as common as the day is long. It's such a ridiculous argument that I believe has some type of antisemitism ties to it. Second, regarding democratic principles-sure, raise taxes on all business owners, large and small. Raise taxes on Capital gains when they are responsible for investing in the very companies that pay the common man's wage and create jobs. Damn rich, they keep creating jobs, they should be taxed more! We gotta put an end to this! Greedy bastards are responsible for 60-80% of new job creation in America! Yeah, that's really PRO business. Give me a break. They are for handouts and trying to "save" jobs locally when in reality the people who are losing jobs need to react to a changing economy and upgrade their skills (see: Michigan Auto Workers). Instead they want protectionist policies that only dis empower the very people they are supposedly trying to "help".
  3. No offense to any of you guys in this forum as I think you are great and your knowledge of baseball is really fun to read. But who here runs a corporation with INVESTORS involved??? I happen to be an investor in many businesses and also run a few corporations myself. One thing you guys are missing is that when you have INVESTORS in your business, you need to report to them consistently on what you are doing in order to make a profit. JR doesn't outright own this team, even though he has a majority stake. JR is probably the most misunderstood owner in sports and I have no problem with him running a business to make money, especially when he has to report to investors and let them know he is actually managing their investment with care! You guys make it seem like its evil that a company makes profits. Kinda like the BS Hillary or Obama are spouting out these days. JR is not interested in making tons of money with the White Sox and he wants to win. He has brought 7 championships to Chicago and people still cannot criticize him quick enough. Just my .02
  4. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 12:09 PM) Your link is broken. What story is this from? Sorry, here you go: http://tinyurl.com/3y8a6j
  5. From the WhiteSox.com website: Ramirez started in center field Monday, indicating he could be in mind for a utility role. Factoring in 12 pitchers, Ozuna and Toby Hall as reserve locks, Uribe at second and Jerry Owens as the starting center fielder, two roster spots exist between Brian Anderson, Ramirez and Carlos Quentin. Should I read into this? This is from the official website itself...I don't believe it's just a coincidence nor is it just one writers opinion??? What am I missing here? Link
  6. QUOTE(Reddy @ Mar 13, 2008 -> 11:19 AM) that's certainly far from OFFICIAL... Well, I was being a bit sarcastic, but you get the point...read between the lines on what the Oz is saying...
  7. Comments from Ozzie: "I'm not worried about it but concerned," Guillen said of Owens' injury. "You give him a couple days to recover and the next day he couldn't be in the lineup. It's something I don't want to deal with during the season." Guillen said he's mindful of what an injury like that did to Scott Podsednik last season. The speedy Podsednik, one of the stars of the 2005 World Series team, jumped in and out of the White Sox lineup with nagging injuries. Guillen doesn't want Owens to go through the same thing. "I'd rather miss him for a couple of days up here than miss him in the season," Guillen said of Owens. Bad news for BA. Just goes to show no matter what, Owens has made this team. So now it's between Quentin and BA? Maybe this isn't news to anyone on this forum but I thought they were going to battle it out in ST. Looks like the decision has already been made.
  8. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Mar 12, 2008 -> 09:11 AM) So are there some here that are just really against one of these 3 guys being the starter? I mean I have my pick on who I like, but I'm not against one of the others if they are out performing. It seems some here are totally against Owens, Anderson or Quentin regardless how they perform? Is that the case for some of you? I have always supported BA even when 90% of this forum counted him out- the kid has a ton of talent and it has to breakthrough if he's committed as much as he appears to be this year. I even think he has an opportunity to be an all-star someday, believe it or not. In any event, unless we DL Quentin or Owens, BA doesn't have a prayer to make this team. I just wish Crede was having a spring like BA so we could get something of value from him as well, but we've made our bed now we have to sleep in it. Trade Crede for sure, perhaps let BA stick around until we get a good offer or bring him up if someone gets hurt.
  9. QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Mar 11, 2008 -> 11:33 AM) Ummm, but we are all posters on a message board, and that is it. Mariotti is a professional journalist for one of the two biggest papers in Chicago. Objectivity should be a part of his job. As much as I hate to disagree, the guy is paid to give his opinion and objectivity isn't part of it- he's paid to spew a bunch of BS on a daily basis. And yes, the guy is a total joke. One of the best columns I've ever seen was the one from another Chicago writer who put together Mariotti's articles throughout the 2005 season- from good to bad, to how they wouldn't make the playoff's when Cleveland was on that run, etc. In the end he contradicted himself like 22 million times when you read one article to the next over the course of 2005. The guy is like Hillary Clinton. He stands for nothing. Whatever is popular and whichever way the wind blows that day is what he'll say. In the end that cupcake Mariotti had to eat some crow 2005. Hopefully he will be doing the same this year as well.
  10. I want Hawk and Stone! That was a great combination! Hawk doesn't respect DJ and it shows in the booth.
  11. QUOTE(Kenny Hates Prospects @ Mar 1, 2008 -> 01:52 PM) I wanted to start a new thread about the way the Sox spend money in dumb areas they could be spending in others instead. Someone made this very valid comment in another thread and I think it would make a great topic: Look at this It looks like the top 3 bonuses given to talent out of the Dominican Republic in 2006 added up to $4.7 million. These bonuses were given to Angel Villalona, Esmailyn Gonzalez, and Carlos Triunfel. Just for the record, Alex Cintron and Rob Mackowiak combined to make $4.15 million in 2006. If we had used minor league invites at the league minimum to back up at SS and LF, it would have saved us about $3 million. That alone gets you two of these guys, and roughly another $1.7 million gets all three. BTW, I picked 2006 signings since those guys played last year, so you can see where some of them are at. Now, Uribe makes $4.5 million this year. Hall makes $1.75 million. Pablo Ozuna makes $1.05 million. Mike MacDougal makes $1.95 million. Crede gets $5.1 million. The league minimum is $390K. If we dump Uribe for a prospect and replace him with Alexei Ramirez we save the whole $4.5 there. If we dump Hall for a nobody prospect and replace him with Lucy we save $1.36 million. If we trade Pablo for next to nothing and replace his legs with Jerry Owens' while adding Anderson as the back-up OF, we save $0.66 million. Dump MacDougal, sub in Wassermann, and you get a better righty specialist for $1.56 million less. Start Fields then send Crede to whoever for another non-roster prospect and you save that whole $5.1 million. In total that would be a savings of $13.18 million. Now another point is the draft. The Sox pick 8th this year. The largest bonus given to any first rounder picked 8th or lower last year was $3.58 million for Porcello (thanks, Kenny). Poreda was picked up at $1.2 million, and it's funny because if you go to this site, there were only four teams that signed a player BELOW recommended slot (Rockies, Reds, Twins, Sox). I guess maybe MLB isn't as anal about going over slot as we've heard? Porcello's contract itself was worth $7.29 million, but that is another story since it is a 4 year major league contract and he could be starting in the big leagues by 2009. Poreda may not have a major league contract, but he doesn't have a breaking ball either, so I don't know how one would defend that pick over Porcello. In terms of bonuses, Poreda was $2.38 million cheaper. So let's think about this: if we were to dump some dead weight and slightly weaken our bench, we could save somewhere around that $13.18 million. If we used that to spend an additional $2.38 million on the first round of the draft we'd have $10.8 million left over for international FA and over-slot signing bonuses in the later rounds. How the f*** does this not make sense to the Sox? We splurge for just one f***ing year and we put our farm at least in the middle of the pack instead of at the bottom. I see no earthly reason why the Sox wouldn't want to do this, especially with Kenny at the helm. All Kenny does is f***ing trade prospects, so why not sign some of these mother f***ers and give yourself something to play with? We're not going to keep them anyway, so instead of pissing your money away on people who can't f***ing hit anyway, and instead of wasting your first rounder on safe picks and pitchers with no secondary stuff, draft and sign some kids with worlds of potential and then deal them for major league talent. That way when a Miguel Cabrera DOES become available, you don't look like a f***tard because your minor league system sucks when you could have made it stronger by spending wiser. Point taken, however did you ever consider NO ONE is willing to take Uribe and his $4.5 M salary?
  12. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 07:08 PM) While it really shouldn't be surprising, the OF situation is quite puzzling. On December 3rd, Quentin was acquired by using Chris Carter, the real only quality positional prospect in the Sox system. One month later, what was left of the Sox system was traded away for Nick Swisher. Two months later, with 4 ST games being played, apparently Jerry Owens, a player that was on the roster for most of the 2007 season is considered the favorite for an OF spot, with Swisher taking the other one. So what happened in those two months? Did the Sox not do their homework on Quentin, and didn't know what they were getting, or was it just a short sided move on there part, because with the holes that still remain on this club, did the Sox just trade away a solid spec in Carter for what they feel is a 4th OF? I'm not saying that because Carter was traded for Quentin he has to start, but what has Carlos really done to all the sudden be behind Owens? What has Jerry done to jump in the lead for the LF spot? Kenny? He led off the season with a bunt base hit in the intersquad game. Leadoff job officially received in February.
  13. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 02:30 PM) I don't agree. Neither has proved anything. It would probably shock most that Anderson hit over .300 with and OPS over .800 for July and August 2006 combined. He put together 2 consecutive months of hitting. Owens hasn't. And he hit .257 in the second half as I recall in total with a piss poor September. In my mind this kid will be able to hit .270+ with 15-20 hrs and play great D if he got a full shot. He is too talented not too, it just won't be on the White Sox, we've already made our bed on this issue. I don't see how he fits anywhere on this team no matter what he does in ST. They seem too high on Quentin and you know they want the speed guy in Owens leading off if they can justify it. The only way he makes the team is if one of those guys goes on the DL or Owens has a horrible ST.
  14. QUOTE(ROC Sox Fan @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 03:11 AM) Trade Ozuna. I was probably one of the few guys on this forum that actually believed we should have given BA a real chance this year and NOT signed Hunter or traded for a CF. I still think the guy has a world of talent and will be a legit CF soon, but now with the Swisher trade the guy is playing for a trade, essentially. In any event, with Owens seemingly improving there is no opportunity for him to make the team despite what Ozzie or KW say at this point. The effects of signing Grinderstad continue... Does anyone really believe he has a chance at making the team this year? I guess we could send him down again and call him up in case someone gets injured, but I have to admit I think the guy deserves his chance at the bigs this year. The problem is, however, we won't get much for him at all. And for those that will say he had his chance in 2006, well, sure, that is correct, however he showed improvement in the second half and a more mature BA in 2008 figures to be a much better ball player. A risk? Yes. But no one can argue with his talent. We stuck with Ventura through an 0 for 41 and we should've stuck with BA's miserable 2006 and now we're left with no choice but to get virtually nothing for a guy who I believe will be a bonafide CF for 7-10 yrs to come.
  15. QUOTE(TheBigHurt @ Jan 1, 2008 -> 02:41 PM) I need to see a video of Konerko's slam from the WS. That gives me chills every time. Of course winning the WS was the best moment of the season, but for me Konerko's slam was the most exciting moment in my life as a Sox fan. Just hit the link on my signature!!!!
  16. Obviously we all want Crede to play well in Spring Training so presumably we can ship him off to another team in a ST deal. I would like to hear your opinion on what would be the ideal trade we get (within reason) for him in ST. I figure if he can play good D, and swing the bat fairly well we could get a guy like Figgins? Not sure if anyone has thought this through but for sure I don't think we're going to get anything close to fair value for the guy. Figgins may even be pushing it in terms of what we could possibly get for Crede- I would hope we could get more but it looks like that won't be the case...
  17. QUOTE(RME JICO @ Dec 27, 2007 -> 02:37 PM) Owens wasn't that bad last season. Everyone looks to his September stats as a positive sign, but he seemed to show improvement starting in late July. Since 7-28-07: 52 G, 214 AB, 20 BB, 20 SB .290/.350/.701 If he had that line for a season, that would be a decent leadoff hitter. Also, projecting his other stats, he would have around 60+ SB as well. What is ironic is Podsednik had almost an identical line in 2005: .291/.351/.700 with 59 SB Looks good to me! If Owens could do that, and we could get something for Crede in ST, we could be somewhat dangerous in 2008.
  18. QUOTE(max power @ Dec 26, 2007 -> 06:08 PM) No thanks. You said "if he is going to be healthy, he will this season." I don't think he will this season. We've got a guy who will likely put up a higher OBP if he stays healthy in LF already. Do you think Jerry Owens will be that guy? Or are you talking about Carlos Quentin? Well, if thats the case, then I say we just put our hopes on Jerry Owens in CF this year and leading off which is mildly disturbing...
  19. QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 26, 2007 -> 05:50 PM) I really, really think you're misjudging the market for Prior here. And I really think you're overlooking his desire to pitch in San Diego for his buddy Kevin Towers. He took that deal because he wants to be comfortable and make his money beginning next year. I'd be really surprised if he didn't have at least 1-2 offers on the table for a guaranteed base of $3-4 million. Perhaps- I just cannot believe that any team in their right mind would pay that. Did you see him pitch against the Sox in ST last year?? He was about 200 lbs lighter than the Prior of 2003 and was topping out at 88 MPH with absolutely NO control. This is coming from the guy that could hit a tea cup at 95 a few years back. I just don't see him regaining form or pitching again in the big leagues unless he finds some new undetectable juice he can get on...
  20. Seeing that this off season has been a major disappointment and we still don't have a lead off hitter, should we take a one year flyer on Pods and have Owens as his backup?? I know we didn't offer him a contract and he is an unrestricted FA. And I realize 90% of this board hates Pods. I think the guy is made of paper as well.... However, he's had a whole offseason without surgeries, etc, and if he's going to have a healthy year it will be this one. Anyone we pick up at this point will have some risk attached to it. I am just saying, since we are on option 45 at this point, does it make sense to sign Pods to a 1 yr deal to lead off and play LF or are we ok with Owens in LF or CF and leading off?? Because it certainly doesn't appear we have any better options at this point. Otherwise, I think we are going to HOPE that Crede swings the bat well in Spring Training to where we can trade him for Figgins or the like. Otherwise we are looking at Owens in CF and leading off.... We do need a OBP guy leading off with speed. Jerry Owens has the speed but not the OBP and a really weak slugging %. We can either pray he gets better or just restructure for the future. If we're truly going to try to win next year, I think we need to answer this problem. And I think our best shot is trading Crede for a leadoff guy, assuming Crede can show some good stuff in ST.
  21. QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 26, 2007 -> 05:05 PM) Oh, btw, it seems Prior can earn $4.5 million in incentives with the deal as well. The end result still is some people are on record of wanting to give prior 1-2 years at a GUARANTEED $3M+ per year. Even someone mentioned a 1 yr deal at less than 5M would be a bargain with an option of 8M on a second year! Uhh...how about 1M!!!! LOL- I get a kick out of it though. People want to play GM on this board and then expose themselves by saying something like offering him 2 years, offering him around a guaranteed 5M with an option for 8M (check out earlier posts on this thread for more info) when the reality the max you would have to give this guy is 1M plus some incentives. The proposed trades I have seen on this forum and the FA signings outside of the "no brainer" FA's (Hunter, etc) have always been way out of wack. Here's yet another example. Sure, he got 1M - a major league contract and it was incentive laden that will get him an additional 4.5 M IF he meets them but we don't know what those incentives are- I would guess they are well above a 2M bonus for showing up smiling everyday. So, sure SD's park had a good deal to do with the signing for only 1M + incentives. However, anything around $3M would be a ridiculous contract for a guy who probably won't be pitching until May of next year and is clearly off the juice and it's showing. I can't see this guy competing next year or any year soon, I cannot believe anyone would consider wasting a frickin dollar on this guy at this point- hell, I think resigning Pods would be a 100X better of a move.
  22. QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Dec 24, 2007 -> 01:22 PM) I still remember what exciting Christmas Eve news it was that the Sox acquired Raines. Also interesting sidenote that two of the players in Christmas Eve deals Calderon and Carlos Martinez are now dead. What happened to Martinez?
  23. QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Dec 22, 2007 -> 07:38 PM) Im sure Kenny told Fields that he will start 3B for the White Sox next year or he will find a place for him to start 3B. Pretty much meaning he won't start out in LF next year. I'll be shocked if Crede and Uribe aren't traded before the New Year. I'll be shocked if Crede is dealt prior to Spring Training. He first needs to show he's healthy before the Sox can get anything for him.
