  1. QUOTE (Joshua Strong @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 03:25 AM) Heyward is still a very good player, the best defensive OF in the game. http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/batting/_/pos...ype/sabermetric In one key offensive category (runs created/27 outs), Heyward ranks dead last and yet he's probably going to get $90-120 next year. That's crazy. Alex Gordon will be in line for a similar contract, with both falling in behind Upton. Heyward's at 3.58. Justin Upton 7.21. Alex Gordon (another FA) 5.69. Melky Cabrera's far and away the lowest for qualified corner OF'ers at 1.77 to provide some perspective.
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 12:44 AM) Alpha Dog what is your take on the fact only one cop (Fife) was acting like a maniac? All the other police seemed calm as this one cop was going berserk. Also how do you condone him roughing up the kid in the bikini. I mean WTF? Again, the other cops were calm. One cop freaking out. Bizarre and a fireable offense for taking out his gun and kneeing the girl in the back. The only argument for his behavior is the two kids sneaking around to his side when he was corralling the girl...he was justified at that point to draw his gun, PERHAPS, but none of the other officers were acting like it was a "life and death" situation, not even close to it. That said, the situation with a girl in a bikini (who obviously wasn't presenting a physical threat to him) it's nearly impossible to defend the fact that he escalated it well beyond what the situation warranted. If her actions were so egregious, then one of the other police officers would have taken his side, supported him and made sure a "clean" arrest was made. That didn't happen in this case (she was released to her mom's custody), causing us all to wonder as a result. The fact that she was only 15 years old (and 17-19) doesn't exactly help his case, either. Some white Craig Ranch residents said they were so frightened about the reaction that they were packing up and leaving their homes temporarily. Some black Craig Ranch residents called for sharp action against the police and held two protests Monday evening. As to the specific incident that sparked everything... About that time, a fight broke out between the 19-year-old who helped organize the party and an older white woman, Ladariene said. The narrative of that fight is also a matter of dispute. A video was widely distributed on conservative websites as evidence that some of the teens were violent. But in an interview posted on YouTube, Tatyana Rhodes, who is black and lives in Craig Ranch, told a photojournalist that another woman, who is white, “was saying things such as ‘black [expletive],’ and ‘That’s why you live in Section 8 homes,’” before slapping her in the face. http://www.dallasnews.com/news/community-n...ice-officer.ece http://www.dallasnews.com/news/community-n...party-video.ece Celebrity reactions. Shonda Rhimes, creator of hit TV shows Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, tweeted a series of questions she said the video raised, including, “When will a group of kids of color together stop being seen as a gang/mob and start being seen as AMERICANS.” “If my daughter EVER disrespected authority, whether a teacher, officer or elder, I’d put her face in the ground myself!” Detective Angela Arredondo posted.
  3. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 11:57 PM) I wouldn't trade Shark for Baez, let alone Quintana. Same for Schwarber. Russell+ is what I want for Quintana. You don't get The Flying Serpent for cheap. Schwarber + Baez would make the most sense, but Baez just has too many flaws to trust his game right now. The other bats like McKinney or Almora aren't immediate or even short-term fits in our current line-up. Maybe Schwarber, CJ Edwards and Gleyber Torres/Pierce Johnson/Duane Underwood.
  4. There's not much out there about what Bregman wants financially but he had a floor when he was drafted out of HS and it couldn't be met. The slot for this pick is well over that amount so he may be happy with anything over what his floor was three years ago. Tucker is committed to Florida but reports are that he'll sign, the expectation is that he'll likely take something near slot. Cameron is the issue. He dropped because of signability concerns. However, rumors have been out there since the fall that there were more potential pre-draft deals in the works than previous years. It's possible that there is already an agreed upon amounts for over slot and he just priced himself out of everyone else's budget to block them drafting him. Either way, the savings that may be possible from Bregman will help sign him. The Astros are not the type of organization that would risk drafting him without having plenty of confidence in being able to sign him. They'll also likely save money with future picks that will likely consist of one or two seniors. And, there's a chance that Eshelman signs below slot as he is was rated much lower by BA but has nothing to gain by returning for his senior season. Day one is in the books and Astros fans have to love the results. http://www.crawfishboxes.com/2015/6/8/8750...day-one-wrap-up http://blog.chron.com/ultimateastros/2015/...dians-at-no-17/ On Brady Aiken. http://www.cleveland.com/tribe/index.ssf/2...ke_injured.html
  5. "We're going to hear different things about an unconventional delivery, things of that nature, but you can't pass on guys that win and guys that are effective and guys that get people out," Laumann said. "He's got a dynamic pitch. His breaking ball is his strikeout pitch. He's 93-96 (mph), 98, carries it late into game. We're excited to get him." If possible, (assistant scouting director Nick) Hostetler was more excited than Laumann. "I made a comment earlier this week that he's a guy for me that you want in between the lines," Hostetler said. "He battles, competes. He's also a guy off the field, I have two daughters, and I hope a guy like that marries one of my daughters. "Just a terrific kid. For us he was the best college guy in the draft. We never want to really look at path. We want to look at development and what he's going to be at the end. But I think in the end, we are looking at it and we think he's going to help us here not only the quickest but also at the same time his ceiling is the highest for what we are trying to do." http://www.dailyherald.com/article/2015060...orts/150608908/ Scot Gregor Apparently Hostetler's been following/tracking him for at least two seasons...
  6. http://espn.go.com/mlb/features/cyyoung Sale has a ways to go to get back into the race. (awarding 12 extra points for being in first place is kind of skewing it) Keuchel, Felix, Archer, Pineda and (probably) Kluber and/or Bauer are all going to factor into it. If you go by WAR, you've got Gray, Keuchel and Archer ahead of everyone....then Pelfrey (wow), Felix, Odorizzi, Kyle Gibson, Bauer, J. Chavez, Hector Santiago, Nick Martinez, Pineda and THEN Sale. David Price is right behind Chris as well, so it depends on what happens with the Tigers making the playoffs (if it's very close).
  7. Baez and Schwarber haven't proven they can play a premium position well. If there was ANY confidence in Schwarber sticking at catcher in even a "Piazza-esque" way, you'd have to consider that move just for the sake of the future offense. Russell has that ability...and then you move Tim Anderson over to 2B. The problem is the Cubs now have Baez with a broken hand, so they don't have the luxury of trading Castro for pitching because you have to cover both middle infield positions (and no, Alcantara isn't the answer at second, either).
  8. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 09:13 PM) Cubs get a guy who hit .422/.483/.749 (in NCAA Div 1, albeit a weak conference) with a pick that could have been the White Sox And we would have successfully developed him?
  9. http://news.yahoo.com/mckinney-police-pool...-121117251.html You can tell from the comments of various city officials and the fact that only one of the teenagers was even detained/arrested that the McKinney mayor's office is preparing for a huge civil lawsuit.
  10. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 09:21 PM) Flowers has 24 hits in 2+ months of baseball lmao Mike Moustakas has more opposite field hits alone than that.
  11. QUOTE (Condor13 @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 09:19 PM) Sanchez is below .150 (.145), at some point you gotta go back to Micah and trade for a catcher. Or Bonifacio, Beckham, Everth Cabrera....something. Micah, it's too quick to jerk him around like that, would really mess with his development IMO. If they really like Dominguez, they can try him at 3B over Gillaspie and send down Sanchez.
  12. Cain, Escobar and Gordon are very questionable. About 2-3 weeks ago, you could have argued for all of those guys, especially Cain because of his WAR. Perez definitely deserves it. Moustakas, too. Hosmer, you can debate it legitimately....Morales has had a very surprising season and has been a huge addition to their offense in terms of balancing it out. Will surely win the AL Comeback Player of the Year award, following fellow Royals' pitcher Chris Young. Infante and Rios....those are jokes. The funny thing is that if Yost has three discretionary picks to cover four teams...there might be a team left off unless the Commissioner's office intervenes. If this happens, they might as well just take away the whole "homefield advantage" aspect or make it where the fan picks are no more than 50%...or maybe it could be 1/3rd fan vote, 1/3rd managers and/or fellow players, 1/3rd media.
  13. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 08:37 PM) This thread has a hole lot of stupid in it. Short of injury, there is a 0% chance we don't get a compensation pick for Shark if he leaves in the offseason. Second, he will not be a "5 ERA pitcher" by the end of the season. The guy's FIP is nearly a run lower than his ERA. On top of that, he's clearly performed below his talent level. The odds are incredibly high Shark will pitch significantly better over the remainder of the season. Last but not least, GMs aren't going to pass on a player simply because his stats are bad at that point in time. Teams will do their due diligence by scouting the player and project what he will have to offer going forward. If he's pitching well come July, teams won't care that he sucked in April & May. Furthermore, the supply of quality starting pitching will greatly impact his value to teams. Way too early to know with any level of certainty who will be available come late July or what they might cost. You can never say 0%, but it's probably more like 3-5%. One of those obvious reasons would be an injury. Another would be the White Sox financial situation heading into next season, along with the unknown development of all their minor league pitchers (Beck, Johnson, Montas, Danish and Fulmer) over the next 3-4 months.
  14. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 11:13 AM) Can't hit or field. Sign him up. .660 OPS in the PCL is a bit discouraging. The guy from fangraphs who used to love this guy, now works for the Astros and they DFA'd him. That's pretty much all you need to know. Kevin Goldstein. And he was one of the two players who turned down long-term extensions like the ones Springer and Singleton (wisely) signed. The other was Robbie Grossman.
  15. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 06:05 PM) So chances are we will see Fulmer in Sept? That's the plan? He's the perfect solution for the 8th inning set-up guy, haha. Following the Sale/Rodon plan. Wouldn't be totally surprising...would have to review Fulmer's collegiate workload this year, he just ramped up this season from previously being a closer/reliever.
  16. QUOTE (Feeky Magee @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 06:03 PM) Wow, Happ's stats are insane. Hopefully not another Schwarber. Love what the bastard Cubs are doing. There's not a lot of certainty about his defensive position....like Bryant (who's doing fine), Schwarber and Baez. Could be 3B, 2B or a corner outfielder. Maybe 1B, but unlikely with Rizzo ensconced there. I don't think any prospect's going to be excited about comparison with Mark McLemore, Harold. Well, the Lincecum comparisons are going to be interesting to track as we monitor how long Sale/Rodon/Fulmer stay healthy.
  17. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 06:02 PM) Cubs get best hitter in the draft who was sitting there for us. Although some were arguing Benintendi...but it's hard to know since that guy came out of seemingly nowhere as well. Then there's Tucker with all the Williams/DiMaggio comparisons.
  18. Cubs going all the hitters, haha. Opposite of the White Sox, all the pitchers/all the lefties.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 06:00 PM) Can't wait to watch him in College World Series and overreact See Jared Mitchell.
  20. Can we please put Fulmer and Rodon on the top of SoxTalk instead of Samardzija? At least Rodon...
  21. Well, this is working out exactly as predicted for the White Sox. Gammons with some serious Fulmer hype right there. Love to hear all the kudos about his work ethic. Rodon has that same quality, desire to be great.
  22. QUOTE (bmags @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 05:54 PM) Remembering now how I thought Khalil Greene would be best shortstop of all time. No mullets unless it's Robin Yount.
  23. There's no way they take Cameron unless KW is making the draft-day decisions.
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 8, 2015 -> 05:45 PM) Cameron very likely to fall to 37 now That would be incredible if the Astros ended up with those three...talk about building your farm system in one fell swoop. Bregman, Tucker and Cameron...?
  25. So Stephenson, Jay and Fulmer....at least one of them is guaranteed. Or Benitendi, however you spell his name. RHP Alec Hansen of OU was speculated coming out of nowhere. So Stephenson, Fulmer and Benitendi.
