  1. 17.2 IP and 26 k's for Putnam. That's crazy. Look for the split finger and still don't hit it.
  2. Didn't realize Beckham's dad played QB at Univ of South Carolina. And that Gordon was offered a full ride to the Air Force Academy to play that position. Learn something new everyday. KW loves those football/baseball guys.
  3. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 07:59 PM) Sly little smile for Rodon The last time the offense bailed me out....glad I'm not Jose Quintana and in actual position to get the victory.
  4. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 07:58 PM) I think the only thing holding them back at this point is a lack of alternatives. Outside of Kottaras, who is a giant f***ing question mark, there doesn't appear to be another option in the entire system that has a chance of being an upgrade at this point. Right. You simply can't be pretending to contend and break in Kevan Smith at that position. If anything, Nieto would be the better solution due to his experience level from last year.
  5. There's the Jose Abreu we all know and love. That ball carried big-time. Opposite field. Golfed it out, that ball was low and almost scraping the ground. Astros, by the way, have lost 5 consecutive.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 07:38 PM) Meanwhile we are #3 in pitching fWAR since then, with 70 more fWAR than the teams at the bottom and we are #29 out of 30 teams in fielding over that timespan (just had to check). So to summarize, since 2007: white Sox Pitching, near top of the league. Offense, baserunning, and fielding, 29th to 30th in MLB over that timespan. BUT fire Don Cooper, haha. Made all the more remarkable by playing 81 home games at one of the most "offense friendly" stadiums in baseball on an annual basis. It's almost like you would expect those results in Old Comiskey Park...but US Cellular Field, no freakin' way. Talk about anomalies. Of course the irony of those 2000-2006 offenses was the "all or nothing" nature of most of their outputs, but you had so many guys capable of hitting homers, KW felt that was at least more entertaining for the fanbase. Now what are we getting?
  7. This has to be his last batter, right? Correa looking more dangerous in this game....that ball he hit to Beckham was a frozen rope. And Carlos came up with a unique solution to the walk problem, just hit betters when you have 3 balls in the count already.
  8. Typical White Sox game this year. Pitcher battling his butt off. Offense flailing away. Early Bullpen/defense/baserunning/mistakes will probably decide it. What's the winning percentage of MLB teams that leave the bases loaded with no outs at least once in a game? It has to be something like 15-20% Talk about demoralizing.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 06:45 PM) Hey at least we got runners on. Inspiring! Now we'll get a fluff/puff piece about Melky Cabrera's bat being just a day or two from coming around.
  10. And nobody in the stadium was even surprised or booing that loudly when the expected happened. Basically, opposing pitchers can relax and let the bottom of the order hitters get themselves out....Flowers must be hitting .050 when he has 2 strikes on him.
  11. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 05:36 PM) Hickman was definitely a bpa pick in round 7. He was a round 3 talent. The only other names even in the conversation would be would be high schoolers who aren't likely to sign with anyone let alone a team with a small bonus pool. Yeah, a lot of the articles I was reading had him in rounds 3-5.
  12. Came back from down 3-0 in the count to Schwarber. Threw two consecutive split finger changes at 90 MPH to get him (3-1, 3-2 counts). 96 MPH in the 7th with just 77 pitches. DID IT. YAY! Most impressive part of that was working so economically....just 11 pitches per inning. Just 1 hour, 32 minutes. Took down Almora, Schwarber and Vogelbach in the process....three best hitting prospects on that team, along with McKinney. First win of the season for Montas, Jacob Turner (yes, that one) took the loss. 29-29 for the Barons now. Hawkins and Jacob May expected to be out for extended time still.
  13. There's a name from the past, Luis Andujar threw a no-hitter for the Barons in 1995. Last combined BIRM no-hitter was in 2001. That last one was also against the Tennessee Smokies, didn't catch if the 1995 one was...
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 03:58 PM) Scott Merkin ‏@scottmerkin 5m5 minutes ago Talked to a very excited Blake Hickman, who will soon be joining his favorite team. Hickman's favorite White Sox players as a fan? A.J. Pierzynski and Jose Valentin New favorite Sox prospect. Gotta pull for your fellow Hawkeyes. The last with the Sox was Cal Eldred in 2000, fwiw.
  15. Yeah, how many times no matter what the circumstances do you see a bunch of teenagers just act calmly and remain fixed in place when the cops show up? I'd love to see that video, actually....white, black, Hispanic, ANY teenagers. They're probably just as afraid of their parents if they got arrested by the police. But the last point stands, and it's coming out in most of the stories. That many minority parents are teaching their children TO RUN AWAY LIKE HELL because the consequences of following police instructions are even more potentially dangerous, at least in the eyes of the public. No black teenager is going to view this and think if a 15 year old girl in a bikini weighing 120 pounds is treated this way by Office Casebolt that older and male black teenagers won't receive even worse treatment from white police officers. If pool parties are broken up with pulling out a gun...and without fellow officers there, better than even odds he starts discharging his weapon in the air to try to control the crowd or worse. It's a cost/benefit analysis thing. Following the officer's instructions, you might end up dead and/or killed by your parents. Run, you have a better chance of getting out of it without any consequences. It's kind of ironic in a year when a movie about the Selma bridge beating was one of the best movies of the year that 50 years later the distrust of law enforcement officials isn't too far removed from the KKK influenced Deep South police forces. And you'll also recall the only force that never "gave in" and resorted to violence was the most successful one in frustrating the marchers and their aims, in Albany, GA. http://news.yahoo.com/texas-policeman-resi...-215553860.html The officer just resigned his position. Jessica Williams of McKinney films her own Daily Show version with "bikini/body suit" combo http://news.yahoo.com/mckinney-daily-show-...-162242184.html When Stewart suggested that pool parties should be fun and involve "super soakers," Williams was shocked. "A water gun at a Texas pool party? Are you trying to get me killed?" she said. "It's Texas — people are always waving guns around," Stewart replied. "Uh, no," she said. "White people are and they call it 'open carry.' For black people it's called 'He's got a gun! He's got a gun! He's got a gun!'"
  16. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 03:42 PM) Unless the box score is wrong it looks like Montas is pitching now. Montas hasn't given up a hit yet through 3.....two walks and a K. ERA down to 2.70.
  17. "That’s the only connection I have to him, but I definitely want to meet him. I definitely want to develop a relationship with him. It’s something I’m definitely looking forward to.” Speaking of Nuke Laloosh cliches...we can add the word "definitely"
  18. QUOTE (wsiskel @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 12:09 PM) More on Erwin from The Augusta Chronicle: (link: http://chronicle.augusta.com/content/blog-...player-reports) "Clemson Jr. LHP Zack Erwin: Among a stable of projectable left-handers on Clemson's staff, Erwin is the leader of that group. He's incredibly long and full of projection, and it's tantalizing coming from the left side. His fastball was 86-90 with good tailing action and arm-side life. He doesn't go inside with as much confidence as Crownover, but he's capable of working both sides enough. Coming from a three-quarters slot and solid extension at 90 on the outer half is tough to hit. Erwin's curveball was 73-75 with good two-plane action, and very good late bite for the velocity. The depth isn't as strong as Crownover's, but it comes at a different shape from a lower slot. Erwin will get under his breaking balls at times by dropping his arm slot, and he can also cut his finish short and leave the ball up. But the delivery is clean for the most part. He throws a tighter breaking ball at 81-83 that looks like a slider. It's basically the same shape and depth but at more velo, so you could call it a change-of-pace breaking ball. I never saw a changeup from Erwin, so the two breaking balls feed off each other as a change of pace. Erwin should probably work on adding a touch of extension and finish more consistently to keep the arm slot up, but the framework is there for a projectable starting pitcher who could add a tick or two of velo and have three solid pitches." Sounds more like John Danks now.
  19. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 10:01 AM) Bob Nightengale ‏@BNightengale 6m6 minutes ago The #Cubs sign closer Rafael Soriano to minor league deal That's definitely one area the White Sox could have used the Bonifacio/Keppinger money...on an 8th inning guy to help set up Robertson. As things look right now, though...it's impossible to say we'd be in the thick of the playoff hunt with Rafael Soriano instead, as he can't play defense or hit.
  20. http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/rev...m-roth-20150604 FIFA has absolutely lost their minds with this "United Passions" movie coming out now. Talk about bad timing. Going to see Jurassic World tmrw (Wed) here in China...debuts two days earlier for some odd reason. Usually we are at least a week behind...or at least 2-3 days whenever a blockbuster movie debuts.
  21. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/129489926/po...-day-1-intrigue 3 best picks, 3 surprises Wouldn't be possible to go through the day without a Melky Cabrera mention, haha. Jon Harris was the one drafted in the spot that was created by the Blue Jays losing him to the White Sox.
  22. Regardless of what they were really trying to do, the argument in her civil case will be that they were her friends and trying to protect her from a "out of control" policeman they felt might harm their 15 year old friend who just happened to be wearing a bikini...whether people like it or not, the image of a guy weighing twice as much using that much force and twisting her arm and throwing her back down to the ground isn't going to win him much sympathy. The other thing here is the officers responding had no way of identifying what teens exactly were causing the problem...because by all reports the majority had been invited, and the problem started where other kids came over the fence when they heard the confrontation with the white woman and the girl who organized the event. This wasn't a case of an "all white" party where a bunch of black teens just came and took it over...the majority of the kids who were there at the b-day party were invited...and it seems the main problem arose when the parents took exception to the behavior of some of the kids. Not only did the police officer observe bad judgment, but surely there was a more polite way to address the partygoers than the tact she took which is to attack them directly with verbal taunts/insults. Adults should know better than to start a fight or confrontation with kids. She should have gotten someone in a more official capacity involved before she took matters into her own hands.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 08:24 AM) Now things get interesting. With the Sox stick to slot, or reach on a guy, and then draft some college seniors? Top 10 rated players on the board starting day 2, according to MLB. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/129483104/hi...as-day-2-awaits What's the most they could possibly give Matuella in the 4th round?
  24. QUOTE (GreenSox @ Jun 9, 2015 -> 08:11 AM) And that's been a sorry, failed proposition for years when trading for veterans. Not only do they overpay, what they get isn't what is advertised. People want to pile on the prospects for Longoria or Kemp, or Zobrist or Lucroy, but those guys are no cinches to repeat performance. KW tried to load up the wagon for Erstad (before he was terrible, but he was never particularly great) foiled only by the Angels owner. ML ready talent seems to be something they're good at identifying, but to pry that away you need a)something to trade and b) often have to catch a team desperate. Avi, Quentin and Eaton are good players, but we traded a good player for each (Peavy, our #1 prospect Carter, Santiago who was and is a good young pitcher). But that's fine - we overpaid for none of them, but simply traded value for value. Because the other route is getting harder and harder, finding guys like DeAza or JD Martinez that are dumped by their organizations and in need of a change of scenery (Dominguez MIGHT be another example)...OR Alexei when there wasn't much of a track record for Cubans and many clubs still were expecting more Rey Ordonez/utility infielder types. Then we were fortunate to have a 1B opening for Abreu in a year when almost all of the other big market teams were not looking to fill that particular position. Then we seemingly whiffed on the Davidson trade, and we also made numerous OTHER mistakes with 3B (Teahen, Viciedo, Keppinger, Brent Morel). The margin for error is razor thin when you miss out on one or two of those trades and also end up stuck with bad contracts such as Melky Cabrera and John Danks.
  25. Oswalt's name is going to be thrown out there a lot. Billy Wagner, from the LH side, comes to mind. Lincecum. Octavio Dotel. Juan Cruz. Tom Gordon. Pedro Martinez. Since there is no difference in this statistic for right-handed starting pitchers, the reason shorter pitchers throw fewer innings may be that they’re less durable or it may be that managers and baseball executives believe that shorter pitchers are less durable. Even if starting left-handed pitchers who are shorter are in fact less durable, the difference, while statistically significant, is still not that great. The data speak for themselves. Baseball organizations have been scouting, signing, and developing players based on a fallacious assumption. Shorter pitchers are just as effective and durable as taller pitchers. If a player has the ability to get drafted, then he should be drafted in the round that fits his talent. The opportunity for major-league clubs is currently at its greatest potential. Clubs that value short pitchers with talent have an opportunity similar to those of clubs that, a decade or more ago, valued on-base percentage at a time when many of their competitors did not. http://sabr.org/research/does-pitcher-s-height-matter Interesting article from 2010 about whether or not a starting pitcher's height matters.
