QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Aug 11, 2013 -> 01:08 PM) DeAza leadoff double to RF corner. Beckham grounds to SS DeAza out at 3rd, baserunning blunder. Alexei foul pop out to Morneau. Dunn takes strike 3 on 1-2 pitch. 1 stranded. And that's why OPS and WAR and fWAR notwithstanding, DeAza's not going to fetch much in the offseason and is still a candidate for non-tendering.

Well, at least we can be no worse than TIED for the 2nd draft pick again after today...those pesky Marlins are trying to catch us/fall back to us, depending on how you want to look at it.

Pacific Rim might make more money in China than in North America. The Guillermo del Toro popcorn flick is Warner Bros.'s highest grossing film of all time in the market with $76.4 million after a dozen days in release. The North American total currently stands at $96.5 million, giving the film a worldwide gross of $344.1 million after factoring in the $247.4 million the film has earned from 61 overseas territories. boxoffice.com Here's another weird one...in a movie with the title PACIFIC RIM (which conjures up the Marianas Trench)...with a famous Japanese actress, with Japanese vocab (kaiju) and drawing on the monster tradition there... Outside the top 10: Pacific Rim finally opened in Japan, but only managed a 5th place, $3 million opening. Although the film has done well overseas, it failed to capture the Japanese market, which is strange considering Pacific Rim draws heavily from Japanese monster movies and anime. The film is now up to $344 million worldwide, though. I think they must have waited too long and too many had already watched it/downloaded it for free...still, would want to wait it in a theatre in 3D instead of on a computer, tv or ipad, etc.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 11, 2013 -> 01:11 PM) Um...great? YES...but, that's probably not the future closer of the White Sox, and not good enough to deal Jones/Reed for prospects if the pitcher replacing them isn't justifiably considered better.

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 11, 2013 -> 10:26 AM) Leury Garcia is active on the Round Rock roster, but hasn't played since Thursday, so maybe they are trying to get him through waivers and he'll be moved over here in the next couple days. Hopefully there's a gentleman's agreement in the industry not to interfere in this case. MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports that the Rangers will send Leury Garcia to the White Sox in the Alex Rios deal. They're announcing it as a player to be named later now only so Garcia doesn't have to pass through waivers.

DeLeon was actually decent for at least one season, but that trade was TERRIBLE with a capital T.

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 11, 2013 -> 09:58 AM) Rios helped Texas win in his debut with them. 2 for 3 with a triple Figures. When do we know for sure if L. Garcia has gone unclaimed or not??? Some GM out there is really going to piss off BOTH Hahn and Daniels if they try to block them. SHOULD UPDATE THE THREAD TITLE...seems it will definitely be Garcia at this point MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reports that the Rangers will send Leury Garcia to the White Sox in the Alex Rios deal. They're announcing it as a player to be named later now only so Garcia doesn't have to pass through waivers. Garcia has some speed and should have a future as a utility player, but he's only a career .261/.310/.347 hitter in the minors, so the Rangers didn't give up much. Aug 9 - 2:33 PM

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2013 -> 11:09 PM) Not Anderson, but I talked to someone who watched the Charlotte game tonight who thought Semien had a bad game defensively. As for Daniel Webb, they thought he was slider-happy with a fastball at 96mph. As for Anderson, he's really cut down on his errors of late. What's the latest on his secondary stuff and command/control? At 96, he runs the risk of being no better than Nate Jones. Maybe Montas could figure in as early as next year, also...?

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 11, 2013 -> 09:08 AM) For the sake of coparison, in Bonilla's age 24 season he had an OPS+ of 118, Viciedo's currently sits at 82. And their age 23 seasons?

QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 10, 2013 -> 10:34 PM) He's kind of just struggling overall. Not much power (0 HR) and he's striking out in almost 25% of his PA. Has anyone seen him play SS in person? Reports? Surely he's made a lot of errors...we'll see where Anderson, Micah Johnson and Semien all end up in terms of their ultimate position destinations. With the XBH issue, Anderson really needs to be at SS or 2B, possibly CF. He's limited to those 3 positions...unless the White Sox had big-time slugging coming from CF and RF and DH/1B/3B/C...then he could be a LFer in the Pods/Pierre mode.

Elysium is going to be a victim of summer burnout from the blockbusters...disappointment with sci fi fare such as Oblivion, After Earth, Pacific Rim, White House Down/Olympus Has Fallen, World War Z, etc. They shouldn't have released it on this particular August date, and they're suffering from 3 other movies opening the same weekend, too. Won't end up doing nearly as well as District 9 did.

Juan Uribe falls for the hidden ball trick
caulfield12 replied to knightni's topic in The Diamond Club
Gives them something to laugh and joke about...probably a big kangaroo court fine, everything's enjoyable when you're playing the way they have been for the last 2 months. -
QUOTE (danman31 @ Aug 10, 2013 -> 10:13 PM) Somehow this thread didn't exist yet. http://www.milb.com/scoreboard/index.jsp?s...mp;ymd=20130810 Semien went ofer. Thompson had a double and a walk. Ravelo had 2 doubles and 2 walks. Cose threw 7 scoreless. Anderson had 3 hits. Is Anderson still struggling with the XBH issue? Haven't been following the minors recently...

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Aug 10, 2013 -> 04:39 PM) Please. You pseudo-prospect and stat guys slay me. For all the grief took for not liking Viciedo, looks like I was right. You're not right YET. He might go to another organization and turn into Bobby Bonilla.
-
Both Garcia and Viciedo have a ton of hand load and long swings when they're getting too aggressive and trying to hit homers. It's a constant struggle for Dayan to cut down on his swing and take what the pitcher gives him....but, on the plus side, he does have the bat speed and nobody doubts his oppo field power and swing, when he's locked in. It is just that he has been so inconsistent in terms of getting locked in and falling back into bad habits. We've talked over and over again about how he misses good fastballs when his swing gets out of whack. If both could cut down on their swings, learn to go the opposite way more often like Puig does, that would go a LONG ways towards making both high quality/dangerous hitters. They need to have a second hitting coach, like Walker/Scott Fletcher in ATL. Because Baines isn't enough, IMO.

Morneau, FWIW, should be a lot easier than McCann, simply because of his familiarity with the AL Central, the closeness of the two cities (Minneapolis and Chicago, as Justin's Canadian and being a big hockey fan in a city with the Blackhawks couldn't hurt) and proximity to the border. McCann will be 10X tougher to bring on. Hahn would have to do an incredible sales job. But if he can bring his season total up to 20+ homers (6 more to go), he'll start to get some really legit offers and we might even lose him too. It's getting to the point where the risk/reward is falling and the bigger contract (years/dollars makes him a more iffy proposition.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2013 -> 03:02 PM) About 2 months ago, Ventura said that he was concerned that Alexei was sacrificing too much of his power trying to be the perfect #2 hitter. Many at the time suggested moving him in the order to try and see if this improved his power...I guess we'll see what happens now. Maybe they should try that with Tim Anderson, haha.
-
Of course, Marty also wants Andre Ethier, even though he's a platoon player at this stage (especially in the AL) and on the wrong side of 30, so probably not on the next White Sox playoff team, lol. And he would probably cost around the entire $37-38 million we saved on Crain/Thornton/Peavy/Rios. Ergo, MOST readily-available veterans are consequently going to be over 30 (and too long in the tooth to be close enough to their primes in 2-3 years now when the Sox next contend) and most younger players are doomed to end up like Viciedo. Best of both worlds. That leaves you only with those 25-29 year olds in their prime who are so readily available for trade.

QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2013 -> 03:01 PM) Hahn talked about Mitchell yesterday, and he said that Buddy Bell and Thome went to see him in Birmingham and made a few tweaks to his swing Thanks, haven't been able to pay as much attention the last month or so....knew Bell wouldn't give up on, at least he has ONE supporter still left.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 10, 2013 -> 02:58 PM) If you're not paying any attention to the circumstances that caused Josh Phegley to be a 25 year old repeating Charlotte then you're totally missing the boat. In a normal progression he'd have been 24 this year but he totally lost a year, and they still continued to promote him rather than having him repeat the level he would have been at before his serious medical issues started. The better organizations in baseball realize when a guy with talent had a setback that he overcame. They don't cast them aside based on the number. That's literally why we have De Aza, for example. The Marlins cast him aside for other guys and we got a very solid MLB player out of it. The same way we ended up with Quentin, along with injury/HBP concerns.
-
Along the line of those thoughts, why not give a bunch of at-bats to Mitchell the final two months, instead of Tekotte or Danks? Maybe he'll catch fire (miraculously)...who knows? It's highly unlikely, but we KNOW that Danks and Tekotte aren't everyday players. We also know exactly what we have in DeAza.
-
Zach Greinke would be the best hitter in the White Sox organization...had we followed Marty's recommendation and signed him in the off-season.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 10, 2013 -> 02:43 PM) If the Angels hadn't pissed away half a billion dollars (or what seems like half a billion dollars) they could definitely use a catcher. Their last good catcher was the original Molina brother (Bengie!). Unless you count Napoli as a "real catcher." Offensively, he was completely legit.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Aug 10, 2013 -> 02:42 PM) Agreed, and I asked yesterday, which teams out there will be in the market for a catcher? The Rangers, if they don't keep AJ, for one. What is Salty's status with the Red Sox? Napoli's not playing any catcher for them this year, is he? The Indians could use a full-time catcher there with Santana more well-suited for 1B/DH. Tigers, if they throw the towel in on Avila? Yankees?
