5/14 White Sox @ Twins
Wow, we actually pulled off a successful sacrifice. What's the world coming to? Okay bullpen, the game is yours to win. And thanks, Mr. Dunn, for helping us to maintain our AL lead in errors committed. Viciedo with 5 walks in a week? Should be AL Player of the Week, haha.

5/14 White Sox @ Twins
Pitching to Mr. Plouffe this series hasn't worked out so well. FWIW, this is the first time we've been 6.5 GB all year. Pretty important game to win, with Axelrod pitching tmrw and going out to face an upwardly trending Angels team that almost lost their manager last weekend if not for a late late rally against the Astros that prevented them losing 3 in a row.

Should White Sox Hold or Fold?
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 14, 2013 -> 08:05 PM) The anti-rebuilding crowd like to throw out scare tactics like "Astros" and "irrelevancy" while ignoring the fact that the Sox have 1 postseason win since 2006. But to imagine that they couldn't win 90-95 games with our pitching staff (keeping Peavy and maybe adding in Johnson for Axelrod, and not knowing 100% what we have in Danks)....and the additions of McCann, Morales and Utley, that's also impossible for anyone to say with any authority. If you were making the argument coming into 2005 that Dye (coming off a major leg injury), Pods (coming off a down season to follow up rookie year success), Hermanson (total question mark/castoff), AJ (character/attitude issues), Iguchi (KW scouted him by videotape) and El Duque were going to lead the team to the World Series that spring, EVERYONE in the world would have said you were INSANE, you agree? Or coming into 2008, NOBODY was predicting we would have a chance to compete again that year. Or in mid-May of 2010, etc. Or coming into 2012, off the disappointment of 2011.

Should White Sox Hold or Fold?
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 14, 2013 -> 08:00 PM) I think if you want to tear it down, with the state of the farm system, it would be a minimum of 5 years before the Sox were relevant again, and that is drafting pretty well. They were awful for 4 years the last time they did a major rebuild with out much in the cubboard, and got McDowell, Ventura, Thomas and Fernandez in consecutive drafts. Even they didn't accomplish that "sustained success" that apparently now is a requirement. But they did have a very good run between 1990 and 1994. The problem, as we all know, is what the strike did to the franchise. It's hard to look at that "sustained success" definition and not take something that was completely out of their control into the equation. (Well, some would actually blame Reinsdorf for the strike, partially....which is a different issue but related nevertheless).

Should White Sox Hold or Fold?
Here's a better way of looking at it, perhaps. All these "second tier" teams in the major markets....the Mets, the A's, the Angels and the White Sox, what's the longest their fans have gone along with "rebuilding" projects? (Because comparing the Sox to the Royals, Pirates, Brewers, Astros, Reds, Mariners, etc.) isn't exactly an accurate way of looking at it. The A's are the only ones you could probably make a legit comparison to, and that's because of the stadium issues/attendance...arising out of their unique predicament of being stuck between a (rock) MLB and the Giants (a hard place).

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 14, 2013 -> 07:03 PM) Just out of curiosity...has there been any post from an actual woman in this thread? From the tenor of this thread, I can't imagine any woman not getting at least a little bit upset and not even bothering to interject with a response.

Should White Sox Hold or Fold?
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 14, 2013 -> 07:06 PM) The money you'd need to spend for those guys would be a bigger gamble than a rebuild. Then they're stuck, because if you look at the Sabathia, Cliff Lee, M. Cabrera etc., deals, more than 60-70% of the time in those big trades "top prospects" turn out to be even less so. Or Freddy Garcia for Olivo/Morse/J. Reed. None of those guys did anything for the M's and all ended up more successful elsewhere...later down the line, particularly Michael Morse. If they DO develop, it usually takes 2-3 years. And Jake Peavy, while very good now, isn't an ace anymore. He's a #2/3 guy for most elite teams. He's not going to get you Alcides Escobar or Juan Segura, like Greinke did.

Dunn, sort of, with homers in two consecutive games. Dayan with a homer off a righty. It's all good, SO FAR.

Should White Sox Hold or Fold?
If they're really planning to bench Dunn permanently (maybe hoping to cause him to retire, which won't happen)...then they would be better off dumping the rest of his salary for a player with a bigger contract who has a higher probability of contributing. As it seems the MAIN issue in this discussion over and over again is the White Sox don't want to pay out a lump sum of $27 million dollars at one time. This is where someone will argue they're worth almost $1 billion dollars as a franchise and SHOULD be able to come up with that money if they really wanted to take that step, from a financial perspective (figuring it's better to get a sunk cost off the team than to carry him on the roster and alienate more and more fans, hurting the bottom line for another 2 years).

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 14, 2013 -> 02:01 PM) [/b] How on Earth is that progress? "Hey little girls, we don't want you to be princesses that show off their raisins. Instead, we want to completely cover you up. We don't want to see your body or face at all. Oh no, too tempting for the more important men in your life. Oh, and don't leave the house unless your man commands you to! Remember, that rock line could form at any minute!!!" I'd rather girls were expected to look like hookers than woman who cover themselves from head to toe. I've actually worked with quite a few Muslim women in my time teaching internationally. All of them, when I've posed your same questions, have said they feel much more comfortable in this way. It's their culture...they to a one all said they feel much more freedom, because they can be judged on their ideas and thoughts and leadership and it's easier to be friends with other women when you take out the competitiveness of women around the issue of beauty. It's not about pleasing their husbands or hiding their bodies or being controlled, it's really the idea that all women should be treated equally based on their character/brains and not being ogled at like girls in bikinis at Spring Break 2013. Can't you imagine if your wife was 2010 Playmate of the Year...how you would feel if men were whistling at her in the street for wearing anything the slightest bit revealing or "sexy"?

QUOTE (Jake @ May 14, 2013 -> 05:48 PM) You pick a guy for him to replace this season, then he can be our 1B starting next year You're going to sit/bench Konerko or Dunn for him? That's where this gets tricky, like bringing Rios on board when Jermaine Dye was one of the veteran leaders. If it's 3B, okay. Can he play third well enough? (If that was actually the case, there would be no reason to move him over to 1st because his value would be 5X higher over there). We need Viciedo to play everyday, and RF is Rios' until he's traded.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 14, 2013 -> 05:33 PM) What hitter in the upcoming 2014 free-agent do you build around? Morales or Granderson? At 31 and 33 respectively next year, I don't want them. If they kept Peavy and could "strike" gold like we did before 2005 (mixing in 2-3 veteran hitters on 1-2 year contracts or largely "incentive-based" deals on guys coming off major injuries like Dye), kind of like what the Mariners did this off-season)...or going into 2008 (Ramirez, Quentin), then there's no reason to say it's impossible. But you can say that for this year if Dunn and especially Konerko continue to flounder away. OTOH, there's a danger holding on to Peavy too long or, heaven forbid, him experiencing another injury related to the first surgery (I know ptac will say it's unlikely). The next problem for 2014 is going to be the bullpen with Crain, Thornton and Lindstrom all probably gone and not knowing exactly what we have with Nate Jones. That's cheaper to fix, and harder to predict, but we can't go all Linebrink/Dotel with contracts and still have enough money left over to fix the offense.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ May 14, 2013 -> 01:01 PM) Is the size of the character really the problem here? She doesn't look any thinner to me. Her face and hair are different but that could be done to any actress by showing a before/after with her hair and makeup done. 1) More make-up, much "prettier" face or appearance 2) Tighter outfit, noticeably smaller/tinier waistline 3) The "wholesome" Disney-esque hint of cleavage in the new version 4) Clothes are less frumpy and more fashionable....also reinforcing idea girls need to dress "sexy" instead of being judged by their brains/merit Let's put it this way. I want to see a Disney cartoon where the girl is 100% covered by a hijab or burkha, with the story taking place in a Muslim/Middle Eastern country (no, Alladin didn't reflect any of this culture, if you can remember back that far). Where all you can see are the eyes, hands and maybe the feet (if in sandals). When that actually happens, I'll believe there's a new level of progress in the world (and media)

http://fmnnow.com/2012/11/wuhan-auto-show-...ren-in-bikinis/ Do they do this with young boys? I don't think so. This is from the Wuhan Auto show....Wuhan is a city of about 10+ million that I'm sure nobody here has even heard of...the Chicago of China, it's described as. I used to live there in 2007-08. By the way, yet ANOTHER example. Almost all of the flight attendants for Asian airlines are picked out of beauty contests and local pageants....the only requirement is being tall, thin (I would swear, Korean Airlines, the girls are all like cookie-cutter models of each other, you can't even tell them apart), with white skin and "good communications skills." Whereas numerous surveys say consistently about 30-50% of the male flight attendants in Asia are gay males. There are even two Asian airlines that brought bikini-clad girls on board to create a sensation on the internet...free publicity, lots of men getting smacked by their wives or g/f's for recording with their cell phones, etc. Then there's Hooters. For every male example, there are 100 female counterexamples of the beauty image being reinforced.

Let's be clear about something else. The camera (or webcam) adds about 4-5-6-7 kg (8-15 pounds). What looks healthy or thin on tv on in a movie isn't 100% accurate, in reality.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 14, 2013 -> 12:49 PM) Let's be fair though - the woman of Hollywood aren't anorexic. They're healthy women who are probably skinnier than their average counterpart, but not unhealthy looking. Every week, there's an allegation about this. One week, it's Katie Holmes. The next week, it's Denise Richards or Kate Beckinsale.

Article in BALT paper comparing Trout/Harper/Machado
http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2013-05-1...ie-orioles-fans Machado has played just 89 games as a big leaguer. Harper has been in 173. Trout, 21, has appeared in 216. The trio's numbers through its first 89 MLB games, though, are remarkably similar. Machado actually has driven in more runs, hit for a higher average (albeit one point higher than Trout at .294) and tied Trout for homers (12, Harper had 10 in his first 89 games). "Now, if you are discussing the 'best young players in the game' list, it is Harper, Trout and Machado leading that discussion," Kurkjian said. "You have to take in account that, last year, this kid was playing out of position, and when [Machado] was called up he was in a pennant race the second he got there. So he is in that discussion." Five major league scouts — three from the National League, two from the American League and none from Washington, Baltimore or Los Angeles — were asked this week to rank those players in order of preference if they could select just one to build a club around. "That's like asking me which Charlie's Angel I'd most want," one veteran scout quipped. "All three are so very good, young, talented and play the game the right way. If I got any of the three as a consolation prize, I wouldn't be disappointed." Two scouts ranked the order as Harper, Trout and Machado; two had it Trout, Machado and Harper and one ranked it Harper, Machado and Trout. One scout said he'd take the Boston Red Sox's shortstop prospect, 20-year-old Xander Bogaerts, third, a spot ahead of Machado. Other names that were mentioned included the Miami Marlins' Giancarlo Stanton, 23; Pittsburgh Pirates' Starling Marte, 24; and St. Louis Cardinals' Oscar Taveras, 20. But four of the five scouts polled said there is clearly a Big Three (with Machado included). Both scouts who ranked Machado second and Trout first said they would flip-flop the two if Machado returned to his natural position of shortstop and played it as well as he plays third.

Everyone knows she is Renee Zellweger, deliberately gaining weight or trying to look unattractive. (She was Jennifer Lawrence before Jennifer Lawrence was...haha....there's another girl who was knocked by the media for not being a size 0 or even 2) It's not the same thing. Beneath her appearance, everyone knows she is quite pretty, or, at the very least, cute. I can't access IMDB here in China, but I assume it's Bridget Jones and Jerry Maguire.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 14, 2013 -> 12:21 PM) I'd argue that the image portrayed by many male leads is not particularly attainable either. Just like women starve themselves and take a regimen of diet pills and fat burners, the men are taking syringes in their asses. Neither are healthy and neither are easily attainable. Should I taking testosterone supplements because my body has naturally slowed down its production? Something tells me that long term that would not be healthy. My guess is the reason you're saying the female ideal is unhealthy while the male ideal is healthy is because the habits to achieve the former have been covered by the media a LOT more than those to achieve the latter. Well, to me, the main difference is "normal" people don't have 2-3 hours per day (or, mostly importantly, the energy to do so), OR personal trainers to push them like a typical Hollywood actor.

I'll give another movie example. Seth Rogen is far from cute/handsome in a typical sense. Yet his stoner/internet porn impresario character can pick up a woman like Katherine Hiegl in KNOCKED UP. Show me ANY Hollywood movie where an ugly or even average looking girl is with the handsomest/cutest guy and it's not a joke or punchline of the movie... Yet I could probably cite 100 movies in the last twenty years where the geeky but later successful/discovering himself boy/young man gets the "hottie" girl (the appropriately named, "She's Out of My League"....with Eve Angel and Jay Baruchel being one of many in that genre.
