QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ May 11, 2013 -> 10:33 PM) So, if we signed AJ, we would be overpaying a veteran, on a bad team, who also happens to be on the DL. Sweet. It's not so much keeping AJ or Buehrle, those were no brainers. It's misjudging the talent behind them, in the case of our current catching issues.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ May 11, 2013 -> 10:22 PM) When Pierzynski signed with the Rangers, my Dad was extremely upset. I told him we need to give Flowers a chance. He responded with "Are you kidding, we are stuck with another Ron Karkovice" Moral of the story here is, my old man knows his baseball and I was wrong. Flowers is indeed crap. He would make a decent backup but he has proven to us that he is not a good every day catcher. His defense is well below average and he can't hit water if he jumped out of a boat. The fact that we have two guys on our starting lineup hitting below .200 is an absolute joke! This team's current standing is a reflection of Hahn pretty much sitting on his hands this past winter. Karkovice was at least an excellent defensive catcher and could bunt better than almost anyone on the team. He had some skills.

What I Would Do
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 11, 2013 -> 09:25 PM) It's on that course as is. Outside of maybe Viciedo and perhaps Beckham there isn't a position player currently on this team who will be on it the next time they make the postseason. Jury's still out on Gillaspie. Probably more of a platoon player or PH-type, but we'll just have to wait and see what happens when Beckham comes back...how Ventura will utilize him and Keppinger. I'm actually getting behind the idea of Beckham at SS because I strongly believe it would make him more confident from an "overall" perspective, sort of like the "captain" on the team with Konerko gone...and, as one of the few remaining younger guys on the team still "youngish" but with a long history/identity with the Sox. I remember all the comparisons to Jeter when he first was drafted and came up...that cockiness and borderline arrogance. Maybe being at SS will help him. It can't get any worse for him offensively, and Ramirez is nearing his sell-by date. If we're not planning to compete for the rest of 2013 (and there's also MINN, CLE and KC between us and the Tigers), it couldn't hurt. At least it would be more interesting. And you simply can't afford to play Keppinger at SS. No way. An infield of Beckham at SS, Sanchez at 2B and Gillaspie/Keppinger 3B/util isn't going to be much worse than what we're currently going with anyway...and all those players are young enough to be a part of the future, if they can hold their own (over 625 OPS and solid defense).

2013 AL Central Catch All thread
Verlander had to use 110 pitches just to get through 5. Didn't have his normal stuff (still) according the announcers. Maybe this is the year all those high pitch counts start to catch up with him. CLE really battled with him, many elongated at-bats.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 11, 2013 -> 08:47 PM) Dunn. Wow. 0-4 with 3 Ks at home. What a worthless baseball player. Indians actually have a decent team. They finished off that game by retiring Cabrera to end the game. If Sox get second pick in the draft this year behind the Marlins, are any certain stars available? Trout-like guys or Harper/Strasburg types? You're forgetting the Astros and possibly the Cubs, too After the #1 pick right now, no consensus. But five million things will change between now and next June.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ May 11, 2013 -> 08:45 PM) when I said it's not going to happen, I meant it's not going to happen that Flowers becomes a competent big-league catcher. But I'm not sure how you can keep trotting a guy out there who leads the league in passed balls and hits less than .180. Occasional big homers and walks...

Buddy Bell
QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 08:40 PM) Many people think Luhnow is doing a fantastic job, especially with how he handled last year's draft. We'll see. They have to be patient. Moore in KC was about to be fired, everyone was turning on him...and things finally started to turn. He just risked his career on that Shields/Davis for Myers move.

2013 AL Central Catch All thread
Exciting Tigers/Indians game. 7-6 CLE barely holding on the lead. Hunter just had a big RBI single. Jackson at 2B. Bottom of the 9th, Cabrera with a chance to tie against Chris Perez. Kipnis just made a behind-the-back, amazing forceout from around the 2B area....one of the best plays of the year, apparently. Perez retires Cabrera with a 3-2 count on a slow roller on the infield.

Flowers has 4 himself. The team has 7, I think. And we are tied for the AL lead in errors (plus, we have fewer games played than most teams) and tied for worst fielding percentage. We'll be all alone in that category after tonight.

Buddy Bell
Honestly, I would rather have Fathom, Dick Allen or most of the moderators here in Bell's position. Maybe a "fresh" pair of eyes, an outsider's perspective...is what it would take to shake things up. So sick of the "good 'ol boys" network and cronyism in baseball. He was a terrible manager, what qualifies him to judge/assess/develop minor league talent? Jon Daniels has an advertising/retail/business background. He was smart enough to fill in the areas he didn't understand and build a team that easily could have won 2 consective World Series. It's not rocket science. Sorry, Jeff Luhnow, who actually hired one (we can see how well that's going so far).

QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 11, 2013 -> 08:30 PM) It is WAY past time I want him gone today forever. Watch out. In the cult hit which is ex-President Bill Clinton's new favorite movie, two African-American midgets hear that same phrase from Jeffrey Jones (Ferris Bueller's principal) and decide to assassinate C-Note in "Who's Your Caddy?"

What I Would Do
QUOTE (The Ultimate Champion @ May 11, 2013 -> 05:24 PM) There in fact does exist an alternate universe in which Ozzie Guillen owns the Sox and for the life of him Marty34 can't make up his mind whether he wants the organization sold or not. Greg775 would enjoy this universe as well. I think they need to add this planet to "Ready Player One." Or write a new book based on that premise. How long before the historic White Sox were kicked out of MLB? JR would be turning over in his grave.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ May 11, 2013 -> 08:25 PM) He's not a major-league starter. deserves a few more weeks. But it's not going to happen. You really think those at-bats will go to Gimenez, Phegley or Bryan Anderson? Good luck believing that.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 08:19 PM) Can I mediate a truce between you two? Well, for a long time he would never respond at all to anything I directed at him. The problem is that I wish I could agree with him...and I do sometimes...but there's a part of me, no matter the negativity or pessimism this season has induced, that causes me to have to defend the organization. (Reminds me of the time teaching in Colombia I got so upset about all of my students saying ill-informed things about George W. Bush, no matter how much I personally disliked him....I spent a whole class explaining/defending his actions and why he did the things he did, so that they would understand that everything is not simply black-and-white...and none of them, of course, were willing at all to join the military or U.N. or even fight the FARC guerillas because they were all so spoiled/pampered/rich...we eventually had a debate where the students had to argue the side of the U.S.) In that sense, Marty draws out the inner-Rongey in all of us.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 08:17 PM) I will say these games are significantly more interesting with Viciedo back in the lineup. Nice having someone to root for that you feel is actually going to be with this organization for the next few years. Agreed. If nothing else, it annoys Marty. Of course, then he'll try to turn it around and say he's a better candidate to trade, lol. Keeps the board more interesting, at least. Well, for some of us.

QUOTE (WilliamTell @ May 11, 2013 -> 08:16 PM) It'd be nice for Keppinger to take a walk sometime. That statistical oddity is annoying me. Even Dayan has walks in two consecutive games. In fact, we'll start to see it more often if Keppinger continues to hit behind him. Who would want to pitch to Viciedo instead of Kepp? No brainer.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 08:10 PM) I can't believe a lineup against RHP with Keppinger, Flowers and Greene batting in order can't produce. Progress. You left Dayan off the "hit list" of fail against RHP.

QUOTE (fathom @ May 11, 2013 -> 08:08 PM) Don't worry Kepp, that's gone in Williamsport. And maybe the Little K at Kauffman Stadium... Angels can tie the White Sox after tomorrow's game if Wilson can beat Sale. It's a shame, almost 29,000 came out with so-so weather. The fans seemingly are at least trying to get behind this team, but they're not making it easy to like, let alone love them like last year's team for most of the year.

Well, that was predictable by Dayan. 3/3 with a walk. Right down the middle, hit it much harder that it was pitched. Wise PR. Rios 280, Dayan only 2 points behind at 278. TRADE HIM WHILE HE'S HOT, lol.

3 K's for Dunn. That was a hearty blasting of boos there for 15 seconds or so. Who is now at .137 and even worse than 2011.
