Shooting in CO at Batman premiere
QUOTE (Wanne @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 06:49 PM) Lot's of unknowledgeable gun people on here (not a slam by any means). StrangeSox was correct...you don’t need a license to own an NFA weapon...or a large capacity mag. Full-auto machineguns (not the other NFA devices) can only be owned by civilians if they are registered as such BEFORE May 19, 1986...they are transferable...and yes...lots of red tape. But...you can walk in and walk out with any AR or AK from any gun dealer. Hell...if you have 9-10K you can get a Barrett M82A1 50 BMG (which is my dream gun to own btw). He seemed to have a clean background check. And as far as large capacity mags...I'd be surprised if he had "several" 100-rounders. He was using an AR which you can get 100-round drum mags for. An AK can get a 75-round mag. Most AR and AK's come with standard 30-round mags. If he bought 6000 rounds and all these mags he's spent a big chunk of money. They do have things called "Slide Fires" which is replacing the stock on an AR or AK with a combo stock and grip. It's based on centrifugal force or "bump firing"...which basically makes your weapon an automatic...and it's completely legal. They go for around $350. And to answer a few responses...you can say CCW people in the crowd wouldn't have made a difference or made things worse...but I don't see it that way. And yes he was covered in Kevlar...but being a novice you're still vulnerable. We'll never know...but I can't imagine that situation. And btw...in Arizona you don't need a CCW permit for concealed carry. I just find it odd that something like this happens with all the stink about the UN Arms Treaty talk going on right now (which is gonna cause a HUGE stink soon)...kind of a CIA "false flag" scenario IMO...like a healthy Andrew Breitbart dropping dead of natural causes at 43 (who said he had bad video of Barry)...and I'll stop now with my other theories. You're serious with that last paragraph? Really? There could be shootings like this week after week after week and I'm not convinced anything would change...in fact, it would probably make it more likely that people already inclined to do so would even more fervently want to arm themselves, rather than agreeing to "disarm." Nolan on shootings: 'unbearably savage' Helmer breaks silence on Aurora massacre By Josh L. Dickey (www.variety.com) Nolan "The Dark Knight Rises" director Christopher Nolan has issued the following statement about the early Friday shooting that claimed 12 victims: "Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of 'The Dark Knight Rises,' I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theater is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families."

Sox trade for Brett Myers
QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 07:47 PM) Have to remember when it comes to witnesses they are crap and are the main reason innocent people go to jail, it is pretty clear Myers did hit his wife but we don't know all the circumstances around it. I don't think he is a stand up human being by any means, I'm not going to buy any merchandise with his name on it, but without knowing about everything I'm not going to call him a scumbag. I don't see how people love AJ and hate Myers though, wasn't AJ the guy when someone asked if he was ok after being hit in the nuts... he responded by hitting the guy in the nuts and asking him if it feels ok? What motivation would they have to lie, though? I could understand (sort of) if they were covering up for a Red Sox player, but why would they drag themselves in a DV situation where they might end up getting to be witnesses, etc.? Certainly, the odds of them knowing it was the MLB pitcher Brett Myers at that time...wasn't very high, unless they were groupies following the team around and ignoring the fact that he was married, but that's HIGHLY unlikely.

Which Sox players wouldn't you trade?
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 04:39 PM) Yep. What struck me about the homer to Ross was the location was good. Ross just beat the ball to the spot, something you just don't see against power closers. Because he was looking for a fastball, #1. Because Reed's fastball hasn't been consistently dominant. Because most of Reed's pitches are in the same 3 out of 9 boxes in the strike zone, batters know where to anticipate the location of a pitch. Because he's been pretty hesistant recently to go with his slider...or AJ/Parent/Cooper to call for it.

And lots of abusers know how to hit women and WHERE to hit them so as not to leave visible marks or scars. In the end, it's a private matter...it could have been a one-time thing, but 90%+ of the time with DV, it isn't. I'm not saying he's evil....just that saying "well, she didn't have a black eye for two weeks" doesn't make it any more acceptable. She clearly had SOME swelling. Someone that size hitting a woman isn't going to leave her without any physical evidence of contact.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 05:07 PM) Turner will have his career best game in innings and strikeouts.....................you can see it a mile away. He's had one very good start and one terrible one. It would be pretty funny (and a bit ironic) if the White Sox got shut out tmrw and it made it actually made it easier for the Tigers to deal Turner for a better, more experienced veteran.

QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 05:05 PM) Replace both of them then. And DeAza, and Dunn, and Konerko, and Beckham... Realistically, the whole line-up has been pretty bad since the TUES Red Sox game. I would trade Raburn for Beckham right now and not bat an eyelash because I have more confidence of Raburn hitting with another team than Beckham ever getting it together in Chicago.

Sox @ Tigers, 7/21, 3:05, FOX
Please trade Beckham for Raburn. They both suck about equally.

LOL at Karros saying that it's a good thing the White Sox would control Brett Myers' contract at $10 million next year as a reliever. As a starter, sure. But you can't pay your closer that kind of money when you're rebuilding/retooling.

QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 03:57 PM) Why is everyone talking Luke we've lost this game already? All we need to do is shut them down in the 8th, score 5 in the top of the 9th, and than let Reed do his job! Because this whole weekend was predictable from the moment Matt Thornton entered the game Thursday night.

How did the last week of 2008 happen? That's what I want to know.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 03:50 PM) I think that Thornton/Reed implosion has had a big impact Despite Addison's false bravado on the Fox interview, that game had a huge impact on this team's psyche. He can act as nonchalant as he wants, but whatever...

QUOTE (RZZZA @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 03:50 PM) Jesus hell Viciedo. Hang your head. At least he has an RBI in this game. Gordon Beckham's MUCH worse. Porcello was 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA against us year...he's definitely continuing that same exact trend.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 03:33 PM) What happened to Beckham's power? This offense is terrible right now, and something has to be done to break up the string of righties at the bottom. Beckham's now 1 for his last 20. Ball doesn't seem to be carrying today.

Sox @ Tigers, 7/21, 3:05, FOX
Can we trade for a new offense? So we're scoring what, about 1.25 runs per game in our last 4 losses?

Sox trade for Brett Myers
That's the other angle. It would be ironic if they dumped his former teammate in Gavin Floyd ($9.5 million option) for Brett Myer's $10 million, but it's not inconceivable. One wonders if KW talked to him or his agent and told him this was part of the thought process behind the trade....?

Sox trade for Brett Myers
QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:47 PM) why is that not true and the other story is? Baseball-wise, it's a good move. He's had one incident, disputed at that, I'm not going to judge the guy. Except there were many witnesses. It happened in a public place. And being drunk or bombed or lit is no excuse for ever hitting a woman, period. I hope you wouldn't accept that excuse if a brother-in-law of yours used it.

Sox trade for Brett Myers
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:41 PM) Which is why it's very unlikely he'll be made the closer. Brett Myers, Astros - $10MM option vests with 45 games finished or based on a points system. Myers has finished 23 of the club's 70 games and is a trade candidate. If he continues to close, the option seems likely to vest. If Reed fails again soon, there might be no other choice. And the other thing to consider is they're already going to be paying him $3 million NOT to close...a little bit like the issue of filling Peavy's spot in the rotation with his $4 million buyout.

Sox trade for Brett Myers
Northsidesawx, it's on the borderline of something that's hard to excuse. We wouldn't be saying "relax" if it was rape or something like the Sandusky case...but it's going to be very polarizing for the fanbase. Some won't accept him no matter what, others will be more forgiving if he goes out and performs. If it was your sister or relative who was beaten up, you might feel differently. I read the "PR spin/feel good" story earlier in the thread, but that doesn't necessarily make it the truth.

Sox trade for Brett Myers
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:35 PM) Doesn't Myers' 10 million dollar option automatically kick in if he finishes 16 more games? For that reason, I doubt he's going to replace Reed. It's not clear whether it's finishes/closes or just appears in....from the looks of it, it's 40-50 appearances. That must have been something that KW and Luhnow discussed in terms of future payroll obligations. OR, KW really has grave concerns about Reed and just picked up a $10 million veteran closer for 2013, the antithesis of the youth movement in the pen. That really makes the money tight for AJ, Youkilis, Floyd and another starter for next year. Only 2 of those 4 will fit.

Sox trade for Brett Myers
Myers is in the final year of his contract, but he has a vesting option that could guarantee his $10 million option next season if he appears in a certain amount of games. Rosenthal reported in June that the best estimate would be between 40 and 50 games, because the Astros reworked his contract when they converted him from a starter to closer before the season. The move makes sense for the White Sox, who have the third-worst bullpen ERA in the American League. Rookie Addison Reed, the team’s closer for most of the season, has a 4.24 ERA and has converted 15 of 18 save opportunities. SI.com (Rosenthal)

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:32 PM) For a rookie closer, he has had a great season. Demote him? WTF. I'll go back to the Greg/Rongey response. Guys who are paid $11 million to close aren't going to be setup guys for rookies making the league minimum. We'll see.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 21, 2012 -> 02:24 PM) I've never booed a Sox player before, but I'll boo this piece of s***. Just goes to show you, KW isn't always a stickler about bringing questionable (at best) character guys into the clubhouse. It has blown up in the past with the likes of Lofton, Swisher, Cabrera, Javy, C-Lee, Magglio and D'Angelo Jimenez, to name a few. I'm pretty sure winning with a DV assailant is probably worse than being a fan of a player who used steroids, because the steroids just cheated the team, the fans and the game, but didn't actually injure or hurt another person in the process of abusing them.
