White Sox Acquire Nick Swisher from Athletics
QUOTE(YASNY @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 01:25 PM) I'd go with Swish leading off. He takes a lot of pitches (which is one area Pods was good at) and gets on base a lot. OCab is perfect for the 2 spot. Bump Fields, AJ and Quentin up a spot and put Richar at 9. because he never swung at anything

Who likes the Swisher trade?
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jan 4, 2008 -> 09:13 AM) Swisher >>>>> Rowand. That is all. defensively, no. but here's the thing: i agree with your post about swisher being better than rowand, at least at the Cell. Swisher is a better hitter, a better on-base threat, and can play multiple positions. when you play in such a small park, ultimately you can't ignore offensive production from any of your positions because other teams will score runs on you in a band box like the Cell, so you might as well put someone in CF who can adequately play the position but who will also put up some nice numbers as well to help your team compete offensively throughout the year for our team, swisher is a better CF option than rowand IMO. oh, and he's cheaper and younger too.

Kenny to discuss Swisher Trade @ 1 PM
Kenny supposed to address the Swish trade at 11 on the score, I guess because of a lot of fans feelings on how much we gave up for him.

Who likes the Swisher trade?
QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 03:58 PM) Don't have a source, but I believe only the Astros were ranked below us in a recent poll. But after parting with our three brightest ... two and 6th brightest.

White Sox Acquire Nick Swisher from Athletics
QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jan 3, 2008 -> 01:47 PM) It seems pretty clear to me that Fields is going to go for a young pitcher. I think that is the next move. i hope not, we will be 3B-less in 09.

White Sox Acquire Nick Swisher from Athletics
i think some people here might be overvaluing DLS and Gio, and forgetting what kind of numbers swisher is MOST LIKELY going to put up in the cell in 2008 .275 avg~ with an OPS of around .875-.900 keep in mind how absolutely massive the colluseum is compared to our park, and then do a little adjustment to his numbers. he'll be a stud here, i'd put money on it.

Where did that $75 million go ?
QUOTE(sircaffey @ Dec 26, 2007 -> 03:52 PM) I don't think anyone said they were "too old." At least I was merely disagreeing with the statement that the core of this team was not old. And besides, Boston's situation is completely different that the Sox. They actually produce impact talent from within. They have a ton more youthful talent than the Sox and can get away with an aging core. Going forward, the age of our "core" is a huge problem with the way this organization produces talent, and is reluctant to bring in talent from the free agent market. On the other hand, it is not a problem for the Red Sox. Even in this upcoming season, relying so heavily on a core that is on the downside of their careers is somewhat of a problem. actually (speaking from position players for the moment), the only position youth boston is using right now is Pedroia and perhaps Ellsbury in 08 (are they confident in keeping him in CF all year if they intend on competing for back to back championships? or will they keep crisp just in case?) Pedroia is far from being a lock in terms of a successful career, and so is Ellsbury so we're back to the veterans, and both teams are ~30 years old for team average, so then you just have to evaluate talent on a player to player basis and the redsox are much better hitters than our guys are, it's really that simple

Where did that $75 million go ?
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 25, 2007 -> 06:45 PM) Look at the core of players on this team -- most of them are over 30 years old. one of the biggest misinformed statements i've heard about the sox is their starters are too old the average age of our starting lineup (ignoring pitching for a minute) 29.7 years old, this includes Fields in LF (Instead of Quentin, who is also young), Crede at 3B, Owens in CF the average age of the Boston Redsox (ignoring pitching) 30.5 years old, this includes Pedroia at 2B, and Ellsbury in CF age has nothing to do with why we're bad. we're bad because we have BAD players.

Josh Fields Tribute Video
QUOTE(103 mph screwball @ Dec 23, 2007 -> 09:44 AM) Very nice work! Thank you for sharing it with us. I forwarded it on to a buddy of mine who follows the Sox but was asking me a lot of questions about Fields. Fields is an IF. Meaning the Sox could win the central IF Fields has a break out all star caliber season. IF Floyd can win 12 games. IF Quentin lives up to his potential. The Sox are full of IF's. Then again, they were in 2005 too. not trying to derail this thread but 2005 had a lot to do with our weak division too, there was only one other above average team besides us in '05 in the al central in the last 2 years now, every team in the ALC has been to the playoffs except the royals

Josh Fields Tribute Video

The White Sox and Alexei Ramírez agree to 4 year deal
so, let me get this straight we basically just signed a bench player, and that makes this team noticably better? why did we sign cabrera and linebrink, then sign a guy who probably won't even be on the team in 2008 but instead be in AAA, along with signing basically a AAA left fielder who was injured last year how do these moves make this team better and more competitive for 2008?

Mitchell Report Thread
QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 09:00 AM) Anyone hear the quote from Boras stating that there is no due process and essentially there is no validity to the report at all. I wonder how many of his guys show up. I can think of at least a handful. Kevin Kernan is speaking on ESPN right now, and according to ESPN he's close friends with Roger. He stated that if Brian Macnamee truly stated these allegations to the mitchell investigators, its most undoubtably true information as Brian Macnamee was VERY close to Roger

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 08:43 AM) ESPN RADIO: ROGER CLEMENS!!!!! HAHAHAHA I've been telling all my friends for the last 4-5 years that Clemens was most likely a roider, but everyone kept telling me i was crazy brb gonna go feed some crow to a few people

Brendan Donnelly
career ERA in the AL of 2.88 since 2002, boston non-tendered his contract and personally I wouldn't mind him in our pen depending on how quickly he recovers from TJS edit: looks like he's missing all of 2008 with recovery process, delete thread since I can't delete it myself

How many sox?
with that said, you think jenks could be a possibility?

Mayweather v. Hatton
QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 10:15 PM) Hatton should stay up. There just isn't much at 140. 147 is, obviously, loaded. In fact, maybe not for his next fight, but a Hatton/De La Hoya fight is probably all but done. PBF, well, there just isn't much for him. Some say Cotto, but I just see another easy W. And then what? Paul Williams? He's got a ridiculous reach, maybe he would be the one to give PBF some trouble. cotto, margarito, malignaggi, DLH rematch to name a few, would be great fights imo

You're the GM. Firesale is the plan.
QUOTE(Hatchetman @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 07:56 AM) I agree with young Tony. The Sox are a business and need to keep the customers happy. Right now the customers are not happy. Best plan is to sign somebody with some name value make some shrewd minor deals. Then pray for a miracle that this team can compete for a wildcard and keep things interesting. the only way i'd want the sox to go into the playoffs in 08 would be to do it convincingly, with a mid-90 win season and incredible seasons out of danks/floyd/gio/contreras i want draft picks ;(
