  2. QUOTE(osxfreak @ Oct 22, 2005 -> 05:29 PM) OK watching FOX and just seen a Book that had Every Advertisement for SOX in it. Where can the average Joe get that one? Anyone have an idea? Here are all the TV ads, if that's what you're talking about. White Sox commercials

  5. QUOTE(SpringfieldFan @ Oct 22, 2005 -> 09:21 AM) So, what's the deal here? In that transcript Joe said he took money to throw the series. He did not say he actually followed through, though. If he really took the cash and renigged, did he still do wrong? SFF When the banned the players, Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis released this statement to the press: "Regardless of the verdict of juries, no player who throws a ballgame, no player that undertakes or promises to throw a ballgame, no player that sits in conference with a bunch of crooked players and gamblers where the ways and means of throwing a game are discussed and does not promptly tell his club about it, will ever play professional baseball." Landis did not try to discern any varying degrees of guilt, he banned everyone who was mixed up in this mess in any way. To this day a sign is posted in every Major League club house reiterating baseball's gambling policy.
  6. From Joe Jackson's signed and sworn Grand Jury testimony on September 28, 1920: The original document is available at http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/f...shoelessjoe.pdf I don't want to rehash the whole black sox scandel, but my opinion is the 8 men were certainly on the take, got off in court only because throwing a baseball game was not a crime and got their justice in the life time bans. Movies and myths are quite entertaining but the first source documents are not refutable.

  8. QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Oct 20, 2005 -> 08:24 PM) I mean, I just read this terrible, poorly researched article by Skip Bayless (who is a complete idiot, I hardly ever bother to read him) and it makes me want to puke all over him. Poorly researched? He quoted Chet Coppock!
  9. QUOTE(shakes @ Oct 20, 2005 -> 04:54 PM) If your an insider, you can listen to the interview. It's good. http://insider.espn.go.com/insider/radio/a...name=dp_podcast I don't have an insider subscription and it played for me. From 10/20, the segment is called "It's Crede's Fault". Its a fine way to waste 10 minutes of your life, recomended.
  10. Don’t over amp, you can’t win 4 games on October 22. Stay patient, good at bats. I have a lot of respect for the Houston pitching staff, including the pen, so be prepared for some corpse ball where the Sox offense is just shut down. These guys are good, don’t get discouraged and junk your plan if they make you look ridiculous a couple times, its bound to happen so don’t get down on yourself, stay mentally prepared to get them the next time up. The Sox need to hang in there, pitch, play defense all night and somehow, someway, something good will happen. Could be a dinger from an unlikely player or another dropped 3rd strike but the key is to play enough baseball to stay in a position to take advantage of what ever comes their way.
  11. Some folks fail to recognize the big contribution Frank made this year. The team was 20-8 with him as DH, 21-9 overall when he appeared in the game. Some of the articles make it seem like he's not a part of this team, the quoted one has one sentence about this play this year. They make it sound like he's just an old guy that the players say kind things about because of his long history with the team, like Minnie Minoso being on the field after game 5 in LA. Baloney, Frank Thomas helped THIS team THIS year on the field. Without Thomas I don't know if they get to a 15 game lead, and without a 15 game lead I don't know if they survive Cleveland's great streak. Frank doesn't deserve to be with the guys and share the glory just because he is a great historical figure, he shares the glory because he contributed to it on the field.
  12. My father was an ardent Sox fan, in his late 70’s he would plan his day around the baseball game on TV, lying on his couch in the ‘TV room” --the back bedroom in his bungalow. He refused to pay for cable so he was watching a disproportionate amount of Cub games. He began to exhibit Cub like tendencies, rooting for Sammy and actually quoting Steve Stone. This was a major family crisis –what’s wrong with dad? So his three sons had a meeting, we split the cost and had cable put in his house. A healthy diet of Hawk Harrelson brought him back into the clear light of White Sox fandom. He never wavered again and when he left us last year he died a practicing White Sox fan. We got him to he park about once a year, the last pitch he saw in this flesh was a Joe Crede walk off against the Tigers.
  13. Looks like one guy agrees with you ---Finley.
  14. QUOTE(YASNY @ Oct 16, 2005 -> 10:16 AM) And don't forget what Boston did last year. Boston didn't have to beat Contreras AND Buehrle AND Garland. Not that it can't happen, but the Angels have a tough row to hoe.
  15. Unless El Duque's arm falls off I cannot imagine any scenario where he is left off the roster. Ozzie explained his reasoning after the Red Sox sweep, he's got 6 pitchers already without playoff experience, and he was proved right. I think the same logic still applies. Even if he is sore and has only one outing in him, it just may be the outing that brings home the crown.

    Mariotti

QUOTE(Mercy! @ Oct 15, 2005 -> 04:24 PM) I disagree. I didn’t read the column you refer to, but I heard enough quotes from Ozzie and Don Cooper before, during and after the game to get the impression that they WERE a little concerned with Garland being a bit too strong after his long lay off. And then they were thrilled with the outcome. That was the gist of it. Do you think you may be letting your feelings about Mariotti cloud your judgement? I don’t read sports writers on deadline and compare their quotes word for word with an audio transcript. But I do notice that if I read several different reporters, they’ll all have slightly different renditions of the words that everyone has heard. That is totally accepted in the profession. This isn’t a presidential news conference, folks! No one bats an eye unless something controversial has been said (oh, say, like Ozzie’s homosexual/child molester comment. Everyone made sure they got that quote EXACTLY right, because they needed to). Finally, do you actually listen to Ozzie? If someone like Mariotti just printed verbatim what comes out of Ozzie’s mouth most days, people would be justified in thinking that he was taking unfair shots at his English. Hey, what ever happened to the idea of just one "I hate Jay Mariotti" thread? I buy a lot of what you say, I do have a grudge against Mariotti. This article struck me because it's one of the few times a reader has access to the primary source itself. I guess the lesson I should really draw from this is to beleive very little of what I read in the papers. ---or internet message boards for that matter.
  17. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 15, 2005 -> 03:25 PM) With the victory over the Angels last night, that gave the White Sox their 104th win of the year. This ties the 1917 White Sox for the most victories in any season, when the post season totals are added in. Just another interesting milestone to a hell of a season. (X 104) Thankyou, Vin
  18. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 15, 2005 -> 11:31 AM) Actually I believe I was technically correct...I said we have not been LESS than 2 games away since 1959, which is exactly the case. We are currently tied with that mark, set in both 83 and 93. 1 more win and we enter territory uncharted in my lifetime...hell in almost 2 of my lifetimes stacked on top of each other. The '64 team finished 1 game behind the Jankees. 1 game away from the WS. You young whipper snappers!
  19. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 15, 2005 -> 12:00 PM) Except it's completely different. Payton was the starting RB for the Super Bowl where as Frank is hurt and not even on the playoff roster. Payton had 22 carries. Thats 22 chances to score a TD.
  20. QUOTE(hi8is @ Oct 15, 2005 -> 01:20 PM) according to ESPN news and the angles box office, the start time is now 4:35 pacific... thats 6:35 central. this time is also now listed on the main chisox.com page. Yep, and it says 7:30 EDT (6:30 in chicago) at FOX Sports. FOX sports now has tomorrows game starting at 3 pm CDT, MLB still shows it as 6:30 CST. Poor Deploderer, all he's trying to find out is when the freaking game is on in London, and we can't even figure out when it's on in the US!
  21. USA Today: This = 1:15 AM in London 7:15 PM in Chicago 5:15 PM in Los Angeles That said, the Fox television networks always lie, first pitch has usually fallen to about 28 minutes after the hour. But I always fall for it and tune in early on the off chance they are telling the truth for once ... hasn't happened yet.

    Mariotti

I had listened to the press conference last night and when I glanced at Mariotti’s column today, his quotes seemed at odds with what Ozzie actually said, so I looked up the transcript on MLB.Com. Mariotti’s quote: "I was concerned about him. I was worried,'' manager Ozzie Guillen said. "But that's the best I've seen him throw all year long.'' MLB Transcript: “I think the first inning set the tone. We don't know how (Jon) Garland is going to show up because he's been laid off for so many days, I was concerned, I was not worried, but I was concerned to see how he did.” Several questions later: “He showed people today, he was throwing strikes, and I think one of the best games he pitched he pitched real well this year, and I think that's the best I've seen him throw all year long. “ What a dick! Ozzie says he was NOT worried, Mariotti quotes that he was worried. He then snips a sentence Ozzie said several minutes later and splices it onto the first as if it were a single quote. Any reader who didn’t hear the press conference gets a very different sense of what Ozzie was saying by reading Mariotti than what Ozzie actually said. And its not just a question of paraphrasing when a guy says he was not worried, and you print it as he was worried. Its pretty harmless on this occasion but it is an object lesson on how he operates, this is standard fare for the Sun-Times lead columnist. This little rant of mine is not about his opinion, I couldn’t get though the column to find out what it was, but about how he manipulates his ‘facts’. He has zero credibility.
  23. QUOTE(Be Good @ Oct 14, 2005 -> 04:21 PM) For those who don't know all the games, are starting at 8. So St. Louis and Houston got the shaft, which is pretty suprising. When both Series are going on, which is Sat, Sun, and Wed the NLCS is on at 4. I can understand it better this year with only one west coast team playing.
  24. QUOTE(Felix @ Oct 14, 2005 -> 07:12 PM) She is a moron. Don't piss her off, she might eat you.
