  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ May 14, 2011 -> 03:07 PM) http://www.waitingfornextyear.com/2011/05/...ell-yeah-sorta/ I don't think any person in baseball would argue that Carmona, Alex White or Justin Masterson aren't talented. Jeanmar Gomez, fine, I'll give you. But until Tomlin and Talbot and Carlos Carrasco (who's injured) prove they are complete frauds, as well as LHP Drew Pomeranz in AAA, they look to be in a lot better shape than we are, and certainly going forward into the future. Alex White hasn't been the reason for their success. He has made 2 starts and has been medicore. Justin Masterson is a competent starter, but he's not going to keep up this pace. With Carmona, you never know what you're going to get. Carlos Carrasco has been fairly terrible so I don't know what you're talking about. Meanwhile, I don't see why 2 starts from Talbot make him anything and he's hurt as well. Josh Tomlin's ERA is 2 runs lower than his FIP. I see a fairly average rotation that's overachieving.
  2. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ May 14, 2011 -> 12:01 PM) I don't think anyone believed Cleveland would hold onto the division in 2007 either. Really? That's a totally different scenario. You're comparing a team that was 2 years removed from 93 wins to a team this year that's mostly devoid of pitching talent and is somehow pitching well. I'd be surprised if the Indians finish over .500.
  3. Shirek got promoted to AA. No corresponding moves yet. Dash have an opening.
  4. Hey I didn't say it would be easy. They're 7 under almost 40 games in. Obviously, there's a lot of work left. I just think the division winner is looking at 87 wins at most so the Sox can get there.
  5. QUOTE (scenario @ May 13, 2011 -> 11:53 PM) On the season so far for Steven Upchurch: 24.2 innings... 26 Ks... 2 BBs... 1.82 ERA... .169 BAA... 2.69 GO/AO Fantastic yes, but I'm finding it hard to get excited when he's going 2-3 innings every outing. Either he's a starter with no stamina or a reliever with less value. I'm taking the wait and see approach because he's right in the middle. Is he a starter or a reliever?
  6. Obviously, April was unbearable. I work evenings and missed almost every game after the first week and didn't feel the least bit bad about it. I'm not going to say I have a great feel for this year's team because I've barely watched them BUT... I still think the White Sox can win the division. Yes, the Sox have are tied for the 2nd worst record in the AL, but I still believe they have the best talent in the division. Also, the team I still view as the biggest threat is the Twins, who are behind the Sox. The Tigers, the only other reasonable threat, are 5 games ahead of the Sox. Granted, that's a solid chunk, but I'm still 90% sure the Indians are a bad baseball team and the Royals are still a year or two away. 5 games out in the first half of May is nothing. Teams 3 or 4 games back at the trading deadline still are considered buyers. 5 games at this point in the year isn't a death sentence. Peavy is back, Humber has been a revelation and the offense can't possibly be this bad the rest of the year. The Sox have won 5 of 6 and should continue to turn it around. I'm not saying I'm picking the Sox to win the division, but I think they still have a reasonable shot. Who's with me? /positivity (please quote this for later reference, I'll never be offended for being too optimistic and maybe I end up looking like a genius)
  7. QUOTE (OilCan @ May 13, 2011 -> 08:35 PM) Charles Leesman has now collectively pitched about a full year of AA ball, being pretty good. 17 games, 8-2 record, 93 IP, 69 hits allowed, 35 walks, 79Ks, roughly a 3.00 ERA in Birmingham. What is preventing him from being promoted to Charlotte? And just how good is he, stuff wise? Generally speaking he's a future lefty specialist. The Sox have kept him in spring training somewhat longer for a couple years now. That's a good sign that they like him. I don't think he's much of a starting prospect, but he's got a 3/4 arm angle which could confuse batters with 90s velocity. I like him, but only as a reliever down the road.
  8. QUOTE (oldsox @ May 11, 2011 -> 10:35 PM) Why Shelton instead of Martinez? Jon Gilmore is on the DL again so the Barons needed another infielder.
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 11, 2011 -> 08:12 PM) Depends on what you mean by value. Trade value can be less than the value of a player to the team holding him Absolutely, but the way Kenny treats prospects maybe that's more important.
  10. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ May 11, 2011 -> 06:53 PM) Tyler Saladino hit a 3-run HR in his 1st AB of the year. Bet that felt good after sitting out.
  11. QUOTE (bighurt4life @ May 11, 2011 -> 06:51 PM) We do have some players who are too old for their level but our true prospects aren't. For example, Trayce Thompson, Dayan, Danks 2, Wilkins are all age appropriate for where they're playing, you could even include Mitchell in this list if you take into consideration that he missed a year of development with his injury. They're age appropriate, but if Wilkins or Danks has to repeat a level they're not going to have much value. Not much room for error, which I think especially applies to Mitchell.
  12. Recently I had a discussion about the state of the White Sox system and the age of prospects at certain levels was one of the points of contention. A number of Sox farmhands are off to hot starts in leagues where they are older than the competition. Obviously, it's early in the year so start complaining about promotions not happening is silly, but it got me thinking. Just how old is too old for each level? Read more: http://www.chicagonow.com/blogs/future-sox...l#ixzz1M5bboISN I know a lot of people have been b****ing about this lately and here's some numbers to back it up. We got some old A balls teams.
  13. He joins Winston-Salem, Kyle Shelton gets moved to AA. Kyle Davis was released. Hopefully Saladino can be a bright spot after breaking his hand in spring training.
  14. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ May 11, 2011 -> 01:03 PM) Looks like a Chris Getz type player to me. Underwhelming tools, minimal power, can run the bases but is not a speedster. At most you can hope he doesn't kill you in average and takes a few walks. Sounds like a top 20 prospect in this system!
  15. QUOTE (DirtySox @ May 9, 2011 -> 08:25 PM) Blanke is 3-4, 2 2B .298/.348/.462 BA had an article on him today as well. The title indicated his focus right now is on his D, but I'm unsure the content as I'm too poor to subscribe. It was a short organizational report. The highlights: he grew 3 inches after high school and didn't play catcher full time until transferring to Tampa from JuCo.
  16. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 9, 2011 -> 07:51 AM) Nice recovery from the previous outing where he gave up his one run so far this season. I wonder, at what point, a guy like this, who keep defying expectations and performs at that level, starts to pass the more highly considered prospects and gets promoted. He reminds me of Bajenaru in a few ways. Baj got a call up to the bigs and didn't do well, but that's probably a good sign for Remenowsky. He will get a shot if he keeps pitching like this. He just has to take advantage.
  17. QUOTE (SoxAce @ May 8, 2011 -> 07:12 PM) I would say the pitching has developed better with us than the hitting. Hell not even whose currently with the org. but whose gone and had success. (like my boy Gio) Yeah. I didn't think the pitching side was good, but when I looked at the drafts they've done fine with pitching. It's hitting where the Sox haven't developed talent at all.
  18. He surfaces in the college football thread every now and again. He hasn't been as active for a while now, but it's always good to see his perspective.
  19. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 5, 2011 -> 09:23 PM) Balta, are you the all time leader in posts now? SS still has him by 11k ha! As for Viciedo: .373/.377/.588 on his current 12-game hitting streak. That's pretty good. Obviously not walking is a problem, but he makes enough contact and has good power. He can still be valuable without ever taking a walk. He won't be a superstar, but he can be a good hitter.
  20. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ May 5, 2011 -> 12:30 PM) I think he just got roughed up yesterday too. Like 4 ER in 2 IP or something. But yes, I like him a lot. In fairness only one of those 4 runs was earned. Reed is likable. One of the few prospects off to a strong start this year. Thanks for sharing that link and welcome aboard!
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 5, 2011 -> 08:26 AM) I don't know what they serve in Cuba, but it hates April. Viciedo always starts slow. Yes. I'm not worried about Viciedo, but I'm starting to think this is the worst the system has been in the last decade.
  22. Both day games today. Jon Gilmore back on the DL for the Barons. Can we please have someone step up in the minors this year? Rienzo, Reed and Petricka have done well, but they're still just in A ball with question marks. Gilmore and Saladino hurt. Short, Phegley, Mitchell, Flowers, Danks, Wilkins and even Viciedo are off to slow starts. Ugh. Something good happen this year!
  23. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 3, 2011 -> 12:26 AM) He's Tom Collaro. He doesn't walk and he strikes out a bunch. If he ever gets to AAA, he's probably a .200/.250/.350 kind of player. Wow Collaro is a name that completely faded out of my mind. Gac certainly walks more than Collaro.
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 2, 2011 -> 08:12 PM) Danks went deep too. 2-3 with a homer and only 1 K. Haha only 1 K. I gotta admit, I'm reading his numbers the same way. "Ooo he didn't strike out today," or "Nice, Danks didn't K a lot today." Sadly 1 is still bad, but seems good.
  25. Yeah Gilmore wasn't listed on a roster until he was activated.
