QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 8, 2011 -> 10:18 AM) How soon after the draft do the early signees start to roll in? By this weekend maybe? And when do Great Falls and Bristol start up? Draft signings happen pretty quickly, but some of the guys are still in the NCAA tourney so they won't sign for a while. Pioneer League starts June 20. Appy League starts June 21.

It's also possible that Ozney is viewed as unsignable.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 08:06 PM) And? He's a whopping 3 days older than me, I wouldn't do that s***. Bryce Harper still thinks he's in high school or college. where retaliation will never fall on his head. The difference is he's a superstar and has always been a superstar. He's never faced anyone as good as him at baseball. That changes how you act.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 08:00 PM) Assassins Creed U? Whenever the consoles name needs to be in there, its going to be a different version. I'm expecting something similar to "Madden" on the Wii. A dumbed down AC. Also, it sounds like it's the original AC. With Ubisoft focused on Revelations right now, I highly doubt AC will be all that different. They are churning out major AC releases every year and using multiple studios to do it. Any remastered AC for the new Wii (I hate using that new name, while I know Project Cafe was never going to be the name it was much better than the college version of Wii) will probably be pretty close to the original just because I doubt they'd spend the time to change it much.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 04:20 PM) Well, I'll see Soptic one way or the other next year. Ha I'm trying to decide which team I want him on more. If he can shore up Mizzou's bullpen and Stites comes back (he just got picked in the 17th round) I love Mizzou's pitching staff, but Soptic sounds like a really good pro arm.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 03:37 PM) Robin Ventura or Josh Fields? Sounds like Josh Fields. Big power hitter that played football (though only in high school). Good athlete, strong arm. BA likes his defense, but not his approach. I don't trust us to fix a player's offensive approach.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 03:08 PM) That's what I meant, like HS players who ended up with a pro career, like Sweeney. Don't forget Gio. Krist sounds like a good defender. The Sox continue to load up on catchers. That's one position the Sox have always have a number of prospects at.
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 02:42 PM) That would be the cherry on the sundae. This has been a putrid draft for the Sox so far. 2006 style. I like the Soptic pick. That's it. From what I've read on Gardeck, you have to like that pick too. I like the Kevan Smith pick, maybe a bit early for a college senior, but he reminds me of Mike Blanke. A catcher with big offensive numbers in college.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 01:28 PM) FutureSox has a report up on McMillen. Haven't see anything for Snodgrass yet. McMillen I'm not going to do any individual reports for the rest of today. Follow the draft tracker for updates on the later picks. Just hit refresh when we take guys. I'll put the tidbits I can find.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 01:15 PM) So far I like our day 2 picks. Some solid upside and I like Johnson. I saw him pitch once and he has good life on that slider and a good fastball. Plus, the one thing the Sox have done a good job of in there system is taking guys with control issues and help develping them. Our minor leagues have a pretty good reputation at developing and working with pitchers and helping them repeat there delivery. In fact, I've only heard very very good things about the vast majority of our pitching coaches in the minor league system. I didn't care for the Johnson pick, but I agree about the Sox doing well in terms of getting guys to repeat their delivery. When I see guys that struggle with that in a scouting report, I get excited.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 12:45 PM) "Maintaining" it is always less of a concern for a reliever. If he's a pitcher that throws in the mid to upper 90's, that's reasonable for the 3rd round. Not complaining about the pick, but very few guys are able to touch even 98 as relievers. If this guy can sit 96, even out of the pen, he's got elite velocity. No need to put out unrealistic expectations on him.
-
Gotta say how much I love the rapid fire MLB draft. As a prospect geek and a fan of college baseball this is how it should be. None of that 4 hours for 60 picks crap.
-
Any requests positionally or player type here in the 4th round? I'm thinking the Sox will go position player here, but I don't have a good reason why.

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 12:24 PM) Soptic seems to have pretty solid mechanics, or at least nothing that looks like he will have injury problems. Not thrilled that he projects to be a reliever, but if he is coming out of the pen, maybe he can maintain that 100 MPH cheese. Just want to point out that touching and maintaining a velocity are completely different things. Maybe pro coaches can get this guy to stick around 96 consistently, but we shouldn't expect more than that. He has plus velocity, let's not go thinking he's going to hit 100 on a regular basis. Also, the 100 report came from him JuCo and not a scouting service.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 12:15 PM) Must be easy heat because he looks like he throws effortlessly. Good find. From my mostly untrained eye those look like pretty good mechanics. Kinda sucks that he's a Mizzou commit. One of my teams is going to miss out on this guy!

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 11:40 AM) He pitched really poorly against Baylor in the regional: 5.1 innings, 10 runs, 9 walks In fairness, the second start was on short rest on Monday, but yeah a pair of ugly starts against Baylor.
-
Wow there goes Tilson. I think that's a bit early for him, but I think that means the Cards probably think he's signable.
-
QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 11:22 AM) Cubs just took an offensive guard with their second-round pick: Holy crap. That's a ball player?
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 7, 2011 -> 11:14 AM) Nationals, Pirates and D-backs all with A+. Your insistence to declare drafts as successes or failures after two picks is idiotic.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 10:08 PM) The board has been pretty positive regarding our first round picks the last few years Yes and at the time that was warranted. It really can't be said enough how awesome the Sale pick was. Teams were backing off of him because of signability and the Sox worked around that. Obviously, his upside is lower as a reliever, but you still have to love the pick. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 6, 2011 -> 11:37 PM) Keith Law is a genius. He hates on Sox prospects because it's warranted. What the hell have we produced homegrown wise during the KW era? Nothing. He could create an account on this board right now and post exactly what he thinks and he'd fit right in with most of the board. Hail Keith Law! The question is why are you so crabby all the time?
-
I always assume the Sox will take a college arm with their first pick. I don't think that's a bad thing either. Most people are complaining about draft spending, but we've all been really happy with the last three first rounders when the picks were made. Heck, two of those are in the Majors already. They are starting to deserve our faith a little bit.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 5, 2011 -> 11:47 PM) Half in half? I'd say Wild Thing if it wasn't so overused.

QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Jun 5, 2011 -> 10:07 PM) I havent picked a 2nd game yet. Which of those two would you say is better? I'm really enjoying Infamous, but it's really about what genre you like better. I picked Wipeout because you can play for 15 minutes or an hour just the same. Easy to find a place to stop and it's a relaxing game for me. Infamous is addicting as hell like an open world game should be. If you have other racing games, Wipeout isn't really that unique, but if you don't it can fill in that slot well. Infamous is more fun though, hands down. Can anyone fill me in on what Playstation Plus gives me? I read about it on their site, but it seems like they're hyping up something that I don't give a s*** about.

31 of the 35 players on Illinois' roster are from the state of Illinois. That's mostly a product of the lack of scholarships available to baseball programs. A partial scholarship goes a lot farther at an in-state public school. Still, that's surprising. Probably also why they're usually not good. Heck, they weren't even that good this year. 15-9 in the Big Ten? Hot at the right time...

Miguel got moved up to Kannapolis with Mike Blanke's promotion to Winston-Salem. Gonzalez HR'd in his first at-bat and went 2-4 in his 2011 Kanny debut.
