QUOTE (TomPickle @ Jun 28, 2011 -> 11:17 PM) Poreda was taken two years before Brothers. Ha this is true. So Mitchell vs. Brothers. Yeah that's a different story.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 28, 2011 -> 11:14 PM) Brothers was someone a lot of us wanted the Sox to draft a few years ago Yeah, I was surprised to see him already in the Majors. Ultimately, a lefty reliever was what the Sox took that year in Poreda. Hard to regret not taking another lefty reliever.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jun 27, 2011 -> 05:15 PM) In regards to the saturation point with lesser comics, there are complete hits(hellboy) and complete misses(watchmen). A lot of it has to do with the material. Watchmen is an incredibly difficult story to bring to the theatre, there was a lot of the story that was either wrapped up quickly or completely left out altogether. It also didnt help that there was some really shoddy acting(Malin Ackerman, im looking at you). I loved the Watchmen movie and thought its ending was far better than the ending in the graphic novel. I watched the movie first, and I understand why people have complaints about turning it into a movie, but I really enjoyed the movie. I think it showed what it needed to, erased a few unnecessary storylines that couldn't fit into the time constraints of a movie and maintained most of the character intricacies. Rorschach was fantastic in the movie. I realize I'm in the minority with saying the movie did the graphic novel a justice, but I truly believe it. It was a great read that was well thought out so I can see how it's almost offensive to trim it down, but I think the movie was still a fantastic story with good visuals and strong characters. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Jun 28, 2011 -> 06:48 PM) What do people have against comic book movies? I'm not including Transformers in this question, but rather superhero movies. In the last 10 years or so, I have found the majority of comic book movies to be good. And the good ones are usually very, very good. I've gone so far as to say that this genre of movie is joining Westerns and gangster films as the American movie genres. In fact, it's sort of taking their place since those other two have waned over the years. Good Westerns or gangster movies only come out every few years anymore. I think it's just overkill at this point. Did we really need a Green Lantern movie? ---- I saw the new X Men movied last night. I thought it was as mediocre as the previous versions, not including the solid Wolverine movie. Some things were very good. I liked McAvoy as Xavier a lot, but I was hoping for a little more from the relationships. A few of the things didn't really jive with the other movies. I think I just had my expectations set a bit too high. I found it to be average in a lot of ways.

Hammel walked an AL pitcher and a hitter that had 1 walk in 183 AB this year. That's some dreadful control. (I also just realized as of that AB that Morel now has 2 BB. He's terrible).

Kanny and Charlotte postponed. Dash suspended after half an inning. Barons @ Jacksonville SP: Bayne Phegley HR Voyagers @ Helena SP: Phippen Bristol @ Bluefield SP: Bollinger

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 28, 2011 -> 04:31 PM) They are now. Petricka, Buch and Bayne were mentioned on the Dash Twitter. Buch isn't listed on the DL, but he is on the roster attachment in the Santos/Oester e-mail. Whisler was sent back to Kanny, Nunez was activated, Gilmore was finally listed on the DL, Eveland was moved up to W-S and Matthew Lane was added to the Bristol roster. Ahh there we go. I guess I should be better about checking the Dash's Twitter. Thanks.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 28, 2011 -> 02:24 PM) Kuhn sounds very Jeremy Reed, with the bat anyway. Jeremy Reed is the epitomy of a fourth outfielder. It's not really that offensive of a comparison to Tyler Kuhn. Reed played in parts of 8 Major League seasons, with significant playing time in four. That's how a bench player's career goes. Once they get past their prime, someone else can do that job. It's not a long lifespan. Kuhn's advantage is that he can play middle infield. Odds are probably better for him.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 27, 2011 -> 07:37 PM) Cameron Bayne to Birmingham, Ryan Buch to the DL. Bayne may be just making a spot start for the Barons. Him and Santiago were both scheduled to pitch tomorrow. I know better than to doubt you on this stuff, but these moves aren't on either roster yet. The Dash are usually very good about updating that stuff. Petricka is already there. They sent out a press release about Santos and Oester moving, but not Petricka which I find really strange as well.

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 28, 2011 -> 06:53 AM) I don't know what his BABIP is this year, but that number is gonna be ridiculously (and unsustainably) high. It's so high I feel like I screwed up the math: .427 QUOTE (oldsox @ Jun 28, 2011 -> 10:27 AM) Whether you guys are right about Kuhn or wrong, he should go to the next level now and see if he regresses or coninues to hit. Then, if he does well at AAA, we will continue the discussion. Exactly. There's no harm in hoping the guy does well at the next level and becomes a Major Leaguer.

QUOTE (Capn12 @ Jun 27, 2011 -> 10:55 PM) Ummm... how would that win the game for Florida? There would still be bases loaded, 2 outs. He got the guy at home first. Boo South Carolina that's how lol.

Knights lost 6-1 SP: Heath Viciedo 3-3, 2B, BB Barons lost 1-0 SP: Edwards Dash won 2-0 Rienzo 7 IP, 6 K, 2 BB, 6 H Hickory @ Intimidators SP: Carter Voyagers @ Helena SP: Jarrett Casey Bristol lost 10-6 Leyer 4 IP, 4 R, 6 K, 3 BB, 4 H What's interesting about Leyer's stats tonight is that it's the opposite of his last start. Last start he racked up 11 groundouts against 1 flyout with no Ks or BBs. This start had a good K rate, walked guys and had 2 groundouts against 3 flyouts. Will the real Leyer please stand up?

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jun 27, 2011 -> 08:53 PM) Gonna keep a very close eye on this guy's progress. (I'm sure you will as well Dan) Haha this early promotion to Kanny reminds me of Escobar. He got promoted from Great Falls after a week or two IIRC.

QUOTE (FlySox87 @ Jun 27, 2011 -> 08:03 PM) I could buy this, except that duo drove in something like 280 runs. I can't blame Juan's relatively low runs total on them. I'm not saying you should. I'm saying you certainly can't blame it on Juan.

Safe on that double play ball. Florida should have the game won.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 27, 2011 -> 02:34 PM) Hasn't he already suited up for the USA? I know there were thoughts Bunbury might play for Canada and Agboussoumande for Togo but I thought when they played in that South Africa game last fall that locked them into the USMNT? Or is the Chandler situation similar to Jones? I haven't seen anything relating to him possibly playing for Germany but I do know his German club team was quite adamant that he not be brought over by Bradley to play in the Gold Cup Friendlies don't lock players in, only official senior competitions do. For the US that is Gold Cup, World Cup qualifiers, Confed Cup and World Cup.

QUOTE (FlySox87 @ Jun 27, 2011 -> 01:35 AM) I don't follow prospects at all (I don't give a damn what someone does at Charlotte, it's worthless unless it shows up in Chicago), so I am totally ignorant. But having read this thread, I think Kuhn sounds a lot like Ryan Sweeney. No power, no speed, nothing spectacular in the field, but a good contact hitter. Am I close at all? And as far as I'm concerned, a high BA is only worth anything if you use it to produce runs. Wade Boggs and Ichiro, they got lots of hits, but more importantly, they scored lots of runs. Ty Cobb, he got lots of hits and scored runs and drove them in. A guy like Rod Carew, who had 100 RBIs and 100 runs scored only once, I'm just not all that sure what his great average and high number of SBs are good for. Speaking of which, the same goes for stolen bases. I don't care if a guy steals 70 bases if he only scores 80 runs. Juan Pierre, I know we all hate him now, but he used to get praised. And for what? The dude hit .327 and stole 46 bases in 2001, and with Larry Walker and Todd Helton behind him, only scored 108 times. People think that's some sort of excellent season, but I'd rather have the 1998 Ray Durham who hit .285 and stole 36 bases, and scored 126 times. I'm just sort of baffled by all the love for BA and such. It's kind of pointless. We had a higher BA and hit total than the Nats today, but oddly I don't recall us winning. High BAs are nice because often they're tied to more run production, but if they're not, I don't see the worth in it. Ryan Sweeney hits .286 for his career, but his 162 game average is 71 runs scored and 59 RBIs? Blah. The problem is all you can do as a leadoff hitter is get on base and steal bases. Scoring runs isn't your responsibility. It's the responsibility of the people behind you to drive you in. Maybe you shouldn't be praising Larry Walker and Todd Helton behind him.

We did learn a lot about the team and that's the good thing about the tournament. You probably want to already know about your team before a relevant Gold Cup, but take what you can get. Adu is back in the mix, Bedoya is coming along as we hoped, Jones is a solid addition to the team and Lichaj looks like the future at left back. Throw in Diskerud, Davies and Holden and you have a much deeper and probably better attack. Like you guys have said though, defense was the problem. Bocanegra is getting older and Goodson is only a decent centerback. Once Cherundolo went out the defense couldn't cope. If we can keep Timmy Chandler in the stars and stripes, there's Cherundolo's replacement in future games. There's reason for optimism, but this isn't the best USMNT we've seen recently.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 05:17 PM) Two more hits for Kuhn. bring him and Viciedo up and send Pierre and Dunn on their way. LOL what does send Dunn on his way mean? Big contract in its first year. You have to live with him.

100-pitch complete game shutout for Doyle. Heck of a start.

How much of a d-bag is Michael Morse? He has to be juicing again to be not only producing, but to constantly be this excited. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 26, 2011 -> 11:41 AM) Knowing the asking price isn't always the deal. Sometimes guys genuinely want to take a bit of time off, especially right out of college after a full college season. Sometimes guys' agents want to take time to press the team just a little more. Walker has been playing in the Alaskan Baseball League. It's one of the better summer college leagues, but it's no Cape Cod. Hitting .222/.364/.222 in 5 games. Anchorage Glacier Pilots stats

QUOTE (zenryan @ Jun 25, 2011 -> 09:52 PM) Got two years to figure out who will make out that back line. I liked what I've seen from Chandler and havent given up on Goodsen but who knows who the other two will be. Lichaj goes forward without abandon, but I like what I've seen from him. Hopefully Boca and Dolo can last the rest of this cycle. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 25, 2011 -> 10:55 PM) Nine goals allowed in the last two Gold Cup Finals against Mexico. They play the game with great pace and have some incredible skill, but that's just astonishingly brutal. Let's not lop in the last Gold Cup final with this one. None of the A teamers for the US played and in fairness few of Mexico's did as well.

Tottenham fans everywhere are wondering why Gio Dos Santos is such garbage for their team yet Pele for Mexico.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jun 25, 2011 -> 08:29 PM) Bang, Adu is bringing creativity on the ball the US team just hasnt seen. 2-0, US has come to play so far. They were dominated for the first 20 minutes too. Mexico finally gets their deserved goal. This is shaping up to be a classic.
