  1. Walker to go to Kanny after this road trip
  2. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jul 18, 2011 -> 12:02 AM) So now you guys are basing this off prospects who can/could make the majors with limited upside (not saying that is Reed necessarily) than prospects with the highest potential who can/could bust? I have no idea what this sentence means, but I don't view Reed as a 'can make the Majors' type. I view him as a lock to have a solid Major League career.
  3. Reed is a sure fire Major Leaguer in my eyes though. I'd say the guys after him and Viciedo are less than 50% to have a multi-year Major League career. I don't really care for Mitchell (relatively) due to contact issues. Thompson is younger and has shown improvement in his game. I used to really like Rienzo, but I don't see him staying as a starter. I view him as a reliever so it's hard to put him in the top 10. I had him at 10, but 4 of the other 5 voters had him outside the top 10.
  4. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 17, 2011 -> 05:36 PM) Would probably move Kuhn up several spots, too. he's hitting .373 in the middle of July. If they're smart they'll make a spot for him as a super utility guy. Doesn't have the power of Lillibridge, but he appears to be a better hitter or at least a hitter who understands who he is and doesn't swing for the fences. That's rare in the Sox system. Kuhn should be a White Sox piranah. Kuhn is in a love/hate spot it seems. His short Charlotte stint didn't help things (though we voted before most of it), but it's hard to put a guy who most view as a bench player in the top 15. In fairness though, I don't see a lot of Major League regulars on the list. It's Viciedo, Reed and a bunch of low upside or high bust rate prospects. My own list changed quite a bit from the one at the end of last year and I have a feeling that will happen again at the end of this year. A lot of interchangeable parts after the first 15 or so. I'd be curious to see other people's prospect rankings just to see where people stand on certain guys.
  5. QUOTE (flavum @ Jul 17, 2011 -> 03:40 PM) 7 innings of relief for Blair Walters at GF. 10 K's, no walks. 11th round pick out of U of Hawaii. It was basically a start. That game was suspended last night.
  6. QUOTE (zenryan @ Jul 16, 2011 -> 08:00 PM) and Argentina bows out of Copa America on their home turf to Uruguay. I just dont understand how Messi can just dominate club soccer but is basically a ghost once in international matches. I don't know what game you were watching, but Messi had a great game. He had the assist, almost had another that was correctly called back for offside, converted his penalty and drew about a dozen fouls. Fantastic game to watch though. QUOTE (Soxfest @ Jul 17, 2011 -> 04:23 PM) Hope Solo was the best player Japan had! Choke city. Solo wasn't the one that choked. She made 1 save out of 4, that's at least average for shootouts. Neither of the goals were her fault, but that first one was ugly defending by a pair of players. Oh well.
  7. Watching Cabrera's fat ass flop on the infield was priceless.
  8. Darwin Matos 10 K in 5 IP tonight, geez.
  9. Great stuff. The Sox have other priorities and probably will get to him later. Summer ball is coming to an end around now anyway.
  10. QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 09:15 AM) Walker has recorded an XBH in all 5 games hes played in And a strikeout as well. At this point it's good to see him hitting well, but rookie ball is meaningless to a guy like him.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 15, 2011 -> 07:49 AM) I imagine if they got a college junior to sign in the 30th round, they didn't pay him 30th round slot. Laumann mentioned him as a guy that went over slot, but we have no idea how much over slot. He could have gotten 10th round money and that would be significantly over slot while still not being a lot of money.
  12. Missouri and Northwestern among the first few gone? Sheesh. Good thing I hated the NCAA 12 demo or I'd be pissed. As for the conference thing, can't you move teams as you like within conferences?
  13. QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Jul 14, 2011 -> 09:18 PM) He's 2 for 3 tonight after going 3 for 24 at Charlotte. i hope that isn't why he went back down. I agree. No reason to use Dawkins to clutter the system. He's got zero future. Almost magic that he went back down and got 2 hits right away. The Barons do have 3 guys on the DL so maybe they just needed another body and the Sox thought this would be a good way for Kuhn to clear his head after the slump.
  14. In fairness, the Latin America market is pretty crazy right now. You're paying 16 year olds as much as a top 10 draft pick and the scouting conditions are typically sheltered simulated games set up by the player's agent. I wish they would spend more on the draft in general, but I can't argue with not spending internationally. They've actually done pretty well in Venezuela recently. Escobar, Gonzalez, Carlos Sanchez and going a bit further back Jose Martinez.
  15. QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 14, 2011 -> 01:52 PM) Ill tell you one thing that cant be debated, Alex Morgan is easier on the eyes than any boys on the U-17 or U-19 squad. I give up on the women vs. men debate, but I'll wholeheartedly agree that Alex Morgan is a total fox. I dig that pink headband too.
  16. QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jul 14, 2011 -> 05:01 PM) I'll be pretty disappointed if they don't sign Gardeck. One of my favorite selections. Me too. He sounded like a very talented arm.
  17. White Sox Director of Amateur Scouting Doug Laumann took part in a conference call for bloggers this afternoon and I was lucky enough to be a part of it. Laumann comes off as a very intelligent baseball mind and it's hard to argue with his first rounders so far. I wanted to get more player specific questions in, but we were on a time limit and the questions tended towards more general stuff about draft strategy and philosophy. Laumann's a talker. I could talk to him for hours about baseball. Doug Laumann talks draft strategy and international signings This isn't a full transcript, but I think South Side Sox or one of the other sites might have one later. I'll link it here if so.
  18. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jul 14, 2011 -> 09:08 AM) I could train with Derrick Rose all the time, doesn't mean I could beat him.Sorry but women's soccer in general is brutal, quality wise. Alright fine. Ignore facts that they would beat most U17 sides. Did you watch the U17 at all? Most of those kids have no touch and dumb mistakes happen all the time. They are faster and a bit stronger at that age, but 17-year-olds don't see first team club action and most aren't close to it, even at the international level.
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 14, 2011 -> 01:31 AM) Is anyone buying Silverio as an actual prospect still at 3B? Actual prospect? Yes. Good one? Ehh. He doesn't walk very much, but if he can turn some of these 28 doubles (and 6 triples) into more than 5 HR than we probably have something.
  20. Gartrell is no longer in the organization. He is with the Braves.
  21. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jul 13, 2011 -> 07:05 PM) Don't mean to sound like a sexist but those u17 teams would easily beat any team from the women's WC tournament. That's false. The women actually train against u19 male sides all the time. The technical ability of u17s isn't refined enough to dominate national team level women. The level of play is probably similar, but drastically different in a lot of ways.
  22. Kanny won 10-4 Bristol lost 3-2
  23. QUOTE (zenryan @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 10:39 PM) Which is what yesterday's game was. It was a controversial call and a moment. If the ref doesnt call some iffy foul then yesterday's game ends up 1-0 US by a second minute own goal. If the US hadnt scored in the 122nd minute then no one is talking about this game. Except you just mentioned two moments and that doesn't include the decisive penalties.
  24. QUOTE (zenryan @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 04:55 PM) All because it was 0-0 doesnt mean it wasnt a great game. There was tons of drama in the US-Algeria too. The Dempsey goal that was wrongfully called offside. Knowing that England was winning and a tie wasnt enough to move on. Algeria hitting the cross bar minutes into the match and the near misses by the US throughout the game. And a 0-0 score was a losing score at the time. Sure the women's world cup has some entertaining aspects because its an international competition but it is really like watching college soccer or the WNBA. The Algeria game was pretty mediocre. The drama was all around advancing or not and had less to do with the game itself. There was certainly tons of tension and ultimately the result came, but what we saw on the field didn't stand out to me. It's memorable because of the timing of the goal. If the goal came in the 47th minute no one would remember the game. It was about a moment, not a game. I'll defend women's soccer. It's probably the best women's sport (maybe (beach) volleyball?) that is a popular men's sport (so not including gymnastics and figure skating which are huge during the Olympics). The women are just as good technically. The biggest differences I've noticed is the lack of quality keepers and the play in the air is almost non-existent. It's less physical and a bit slower, but I'd say the physical limitations have less of an impact on how watchable it is compared to other sports. Please don't mention women's soccer in the same breath at the WNBA.
  25. QUOTE (newsoxfan @ Jul 11, 2011 -> 03:51 PM) "As terrible as Bradley Salgago is"? How can you call a young player (19) who is fresh out of high school, knocked the cover off the ball all spring and has oustanding defense "terrible"? You obviously don't know too much about him or you would know what he is capable of. Yes, his avg is not what it should be right now but he puts his bat on the ball almost every at bat and during this last losing (2 and 5) road trip, brought his average up 40 points. He's young, plays with guys 3-5 yrs older than him, has no college ball experience and is the starting shortstop. Probably not "terrible". I'm pretty sure SoxAce just meant he hasn't performed well in games as a pro, but he is still a prospect because of his age and other things you eluded to.
