  1. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Jun 8, 2009 -> 08:42 PM) I think you can rest assured that there will never be a system like the NBA has for the entire MLB draft. It's too different and far too deeper to do something like that. I do, however, think we'll see some boundaries put into place for the 1st round at the very least. That's really the only problem the MLB Draft has. After that, let teams use their money as to how they see fit. The problem with that is that then the players that want huge contracts will just say 'don't pick me in the 1st round or I won't sign because I want more money.' There has to be a max contract put in place, but it's not going to be easy to implement without repercussions or loopholes. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 08:40 AM) so, a player with absolutely NO experience above college is comparable to a player who spent 8 years in the bandbox stadiums of the Japanese leagues? Boras needs his head examined. Strasburg pitched in the Olympics against minor league and other pro competition.
  2. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 02:00 PM) Saturday's game wasn't sold out, there were open areas in the corners of the upper deck, announced attendance was 55k, which is about 6k less than capacity, so tickets were available to anyone who wanted to go. With the crowd being at least 75% pro-Honduras, that means there were less than 15,000 USA fans, which is pretty low for a city the size of Chicago. Get out, there's no way Honduras had 40k there.
  3. Interesting. He topped out at 89 in the short MLB video. It didn't make sense for a 6'4 kid to not be able to throw even 90 consistently.
  4. An interesting, somewhat non-baseball story on Trayce Thompson
  5. The Sox got a top 10 talent with a question mark (college K rate). That sounds like something you get around 23. The type of player is certainly a need in the organization. Anderson, Getz and Beckham have added athleticism to the Sox, but they are still pretty lacking. Danks will be another plus defender, but you don't hate the Sox pick for talent. You hate it because you don't think the Sox can coach him up.
  6. QUOTE (knightni @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 09:31 PM) Thompson excites me more than anyone, but I don't know if he'll sign. Absolutely. I liked that pick more than our others.
  7. QUOTE (dasox24 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 08:43 PM) I immediately think of Justin Edwards when I think of this pick. Florida prep pitcher without overpowering stuff. Let's hope this one works out a bit better. There goes Walla, Jason. I'm sure you're a bit disappointed. Exactly what I thought. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 09:03 PM) We addressed the need in the OF, but we drafted two pretty big projects. Right now both Mitchell and Thompson are more so athletes rather than baseball players. Would have prefered maybe Kipnis instead of Thompson. Or, I think it woulda been better to go with Gould at 61 and Max Walla at 71. Thompson is a HSer that is raking in California (thru 54 AB he was hitting .463 with 9 HR). I wouldn't say he is more athlete than ballplayer. Mitchell has those massive strikeout numbers to worry about, but Thompson has nothing to say he isn't a ballplayer.
  8. QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 07:48 PM) Yeah, so when is this guy going to be on TV so we can all watch our future star? Saturday at 6 on ESPN.
  9. Jared Mitchell taken 23rd overall by the Sox I was prepping for Arnett and Brothers and then the Sox took Mitchell. I should have known better. Other FutureSox stories: Supp. pick Phegley 2nd rounder Thompson 2nd rounder Holmberg 3rd rounder Morgado
  10. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 06:53 PM) Mother crap. Both my Mizzou guys to rivals. f***. F. My. Life. I yelled f*** at the top of my lungs. Damnit.
  11. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 06:38 PM) TAMU for Miller. I was reading Gibson's scouting report, and I see he doesn't throw hard. What's his story? He sits 92 with a plus slider (Major League caliber from what I've read). It's a sick pitch. He has good enough control not to walk guys, but his fastball is pretty straight. He needs to get some movement on his fastball and then I'll be sold on him, but until then I'm somewhat worried about him. I'm not worried about the injury, but it is notable. At 23, the potential might be too good to pass up, but it's not the Sox style to take a risky pick.
  12. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 06:14 PM) I think Gibson might go here, its about the only place he'd go, otherwise I see him falling outside of the top 25, maybe even the 1st round, although the Cubs might go the value route on him. Pollack is a definate possibility as well. The DBacks have taken a couple Missouri guys in recent years (Scherzer and Evan Frey an OF in AA from same draft class).
  13. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 05:58 PM) Damn. I am pissed. Can't root for him like I was going to do. I still will. The Royals are still the Royals for now. Crow was too much fun to watch in college. Of course, he's probably going to be in the Majors late next year.
  14. Well done Soxtalk. 3 of us predicted Crow to Royals. Kinda hurts me. He's such a stud.
  15. Complete hunch, but I think the Royals snap up Crow here. They went local with a couple higher picks last year. They spent some money on guys too so they might not shy away from the 4 mill.
  16. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 05:26 PM) but I also don't think Gibson asks for as much money, imo. Pretty confident he won't. QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 05:38 PM) If the Tigers pick Crow, I will puke. I know, I was so happy to see the Tigers not take a Mizzou guy.
  17. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 05:21 PM) The best part is how he commands his fastball. That will allow him to be a very sucessful big league starter as well as enable him to move through the minors quickly. Him or Scheppers would fit in great with Danks/Floyd/Richard/Poreda/Buehrle (obviously that is 5 guys, but injuries happen and some guys don't pan out or move to the pen). Yes. I'm probably wasting my energy on the thought of it. He probably won't fall to 23 (certainly shouldn't) and knowing the Sox, they won't take him anyway.
  18. I really hope the Sox realize the talent Crow is and take him if he slips that far. Mid-high 90s fastball with great control and blew away the Cape Cod league. I don't understand why 4 million is too much for him.
  19. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 05:08 PM) They only broadcast in HD, no simulcast in regular defintion like a lot of channels. Yeah, but the low def channel works if you don't have a high def TV. The piped in clapping after every draft pick is awful.
  20. QUOTE (WHarris1 @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 04:45 PM) I think thats 3? It is.
  21. QUOTE (joesaiditstrue @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 04:39 PM) Are there any "Gordon Beckham"s in this years draft that I should pay attention to? I'm not really familiar with any of their names or positions or talents in this years draft This year's draft is supposedly deeper, but the first round is a lot worse. Last year's first round was also one of the better ones talent wise, or at least that's what we've been told and so far it seems right.
  22. If Aaron Crow falls outside the top 5, it's a joke. He's an absolute stud and this is a much weaker draft than last year. I'm unpinning this thread. Hopefully this will force people to use the other one now that the draft is almost starting.
  23. Word is Kyle's UCL (the TJS ligament) is fine and his shoulder is fine. He was in a lot of pain, but pitched through it in regional. He was going to take 4 weeks off from pitching after Mizzou's season ended, but it will now be 6 weeks. It's coming from a biased source, but it sounds positive.
  24. QUOTE (Jimbo's Drinker @ Jun 9, 2009 -> 04:00 AM) Maybe Colon goes bye bye, Richard to Bullpen, and Poreda to start on Friday? I just hope there is not an injury that has not been released yet! I'd be surprised if the Sox gave up on Colon so soon. Richard too for that matter. Maybe the Sox have had enough of Jimmy Gobble.
