  1. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ May 23, 2009 -> 12:07 PM) To me, he's up there with Beckham as far as being the type of player that you don't trade unless you get a young star who will be under control for a long time. As for his BB rate, I looked at his numbers yesterday and he's on a pace to walk about 60 times while K'ing less than 100 times. For a minor leaguer with that much power, that is great. That shows that he has a chance to be a .350+ OBP guy in the Majors should he continue along the pace he's at. Allen has really picked it up over the last year, especially so far this year. I think Allen has the potential to be solid, but he plays a position where there are a lot of guys that can do what he can. He has 17 BB in 163 AB, that's pretty average. That's in line with his career numbers too. Sidenote, Allen is hitting way better in Regions Park than on the road. .329 vs. .264 batting averages and the power is about the same. Seems odd.
  2. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ May 22, 2009 -> 03:51 PM) If Brandon Allen was in that deal I think it would have come out, and I for one would not trade Brandon Allen for Jake Peavy. He's in Beckham territory IMHO and by far our 2nd best prospect. Dude is making great contact with a great BB rate and brings huge power from the left side along with some speed on the basepaths. Yeah, we should keep this guy. He's not anywhere near as rare of a prospect as Beckham and where is this supposed great BB rate?
  3. As of right now it would make sense just to see what Beckham can do. It would be nice to see what positions he can handle and know this before he gets to the Majors. I wouldn't read anything into it, just yet.
  4. QUOTE (almagest @ May 22, 2009 -> 11:23 AM) 30 BB, 34 K, .444 OBP, .464 SLG, .268 AVG, .908 OPS sounds pretty good to me, though I would like to see that batting average climb a bit. 30 BB/34 K is really encouraging. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ May 22, 2009 -> 03:08 PM) Flowers also has a .455 OBP. Ya, I'd like to see him get his average up, but he's getting on base a helluva lot. I'm not saying Flowers has been a disappointment, but I'm going to keep my excitement to a relative minimum until the guy can put up a solid batting average in AA. If he's hitting .268, I'm worried what he will do as he goes up the levels. As for Gilmore, you can say he is too young to get down on, but he hasn't shown much to get excited about yet either. We'll see what happens, but he needs to keep this hot streak going because if you can't hit low A by your 3rd year in pro ball, it's not looking good for you. This is a guy with an atrocious K/BB as a pro so I feel as of right now I have a better argument saying he sucks than the people saying he will turn out well.
  5. That's one way to look at it, but we don't know that Allen wasn't involved. We just know Danks and Beckham weren't because they were drafted less than a year ago.
  6. I want it noted that I read the topic and then voted Anderson thinking you wanted to know who my CF of choice was. That's Brian so I voted for him. Low and behold the topic title and the question are opposites and now Brian has a vote he shouldn't.
  7. Peavy pissed me off, but I hate the Cubs and their fans more.
  8. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ May 21, 2009 -> 07:41 PM) Danks and Beckham are incredible. There was about a two week adjustment period for both of them and they've never looked back. Flowers hardly even needed a week! Flowers is hitting .268. I want better than that. QUOTE (daa84 @ May 21, 2009 -> 08:13 PM) the javy deal is alot more acceptable than the swisher deal IMO I've publicly said here that people need to temper their enthusiasm about JorDanks, because he was still a 7th round pick that scouts had serious concerns over where his power went from his HS days, but I gotta admit...I'm starting to get pretty damn excited about this kid. He Ks alot, but he also has shown a great ability to get on base so far....hitting for high average and drawing a nice number of walks....23 in 150 ABs. I think he's got a shot at being a curtis granderson type player As has been said, he only slipped because of signability issues but that Vazquez trade is a total joke right now. Flowers better start hitting again for that deal to look acceptable. Gilmore sucks.
  9. Kyle likely won't be available by the time the Sox pick in the 1st round, but there's a shot so I'll post this since I've seen him pitch for 3 years. Here's a decent scouting report on him. I say decent because I've watched guns on him and typically he is sitting at 92, not topping out there. Otherwise, I say the report is accurate. Average (at best) life to his fastball, but he is able to spot the pitch. Kyle's slider is his best pitch. It's awesome. Personally, I think he might end up being a really good Major League reliever. He is very good, but the thing I would be worried about is whether or not he can develop a changeup and add some movement to his fastball. If he can get a changeup, he could probably live with a mostly straight fastball considering he locates it. I've been saying he won't make it as a Major League starter since I saw the straight fastball so we will see what happens with Kyle. Live video of his start in the Big 12 Tourney against Texas A&M is available, but it's not working consistently. 10. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 20, 2009 -> 04:18 PM) No, I wouldn't expect you out here in the first round, but if you happen to win your regionals and Fullerton did I wouldn't be shocked to see you out West for the Super Regionals, in which case you might very well be primed to get a look at Fullerton. Yeah, my roommate is the baseball team's beat reporter for the paper I worked at. They are paying for him to go to the Big 12 Tourney starting Friday so it's possible he would get us out to Fullerton if that scenario happens. As for Arnett, I'm really impressed. His secondary stuff is certainly above average for college. I wouldn't be too worried about it in the pros considering this guy has improved at a later age, he still can get better. BearSox said don't take him until 71, no way he slips that far. He's legit.
  11. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 20, 2009 -> 04:06 PM) So are our teams going to find a way to meet up again this year? Possible, but I don't think Mizzou will get shipped out west. Seems like enough teams closer to them will be hosting (a possible Big Ten host, Arkansas, TCU, LSU, Rice, Ole Miss). If Mizzou gets shipped out west with what should be a pretty good reputation and a probable 2 seed, I'll be upset. 16 teams have made the tourney the last 6 years, Mizzou is one of them, and a few more will drop off that list once it becomes the last 7 years. It would be frustrating to not be given any respect from the committee.
  12. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 20, 2009 -> 03:49 PM) The curve is a very raw pitch of his. I got the game recording right now, but he might very well be the guy the Sox take. He's starting to grow on me a lot, especially since he tends to hold his velocity deep into games as of late. Yeah it goes without saying that you don't see college pitchers throwing mid 90s consistently with another above average pitch. I scoffed at the idea of an Indiana pitcher being a 1st rounder, but so far it seems legit.
  13. He got injured a couple weeks ago to more than likely end his season. Broken bone in his hand, nothing super major, but bad timing at the end of the season. This was by far his worst offensive year. I would say the scouting report is wrong about his power, though he didn't show power in the Cod league so maybe he only has metal bat power. The defensive reports are accurate, he's so much fun to watch behind the plate. Another thing worth noting about his defense is that he calls games for Mizzou, which is rare for college catchers. He definitely has a shot to be a solid catching prospect because of his defense, but I don't know if his bat will get him to the Majors. With that said, I would love for the Sox to take him in the 4th round. His bat is a question mark as they said in the report, but if he can hit respectably well his defense will carry him.
  14. Arnett is on Big Ten Network in the Big Ten Tourney against Purdue. His fastball is sitting mid 90s. I wasn't paying much attention and missed the first few innings, but a mid 90s fastball will catch your attention. He threw a pretty sick 66 MPH curve to K a batter last inning. Gun could have missed it, but that's a HUGE velocity difference from his fastball.
  15. QUOTE (kapkomet @ May 18, 2009 -> 01:00 AM) danman, it would depend on how these girls got sick and the consequences and after behavior of sickness. It doesn't sound like sickness with benefits, so pukedness isn't so funny afterall. I didn't say it was funny. It wasn't funny at all. I had to take one of them home. It was more ridiculous than funny.
  16. So I graduated in the early evening, said goodbye to my parents later and then witnessed 2 drunk girls get sick at the final party. What a finale college.
  17. Danks got promoted to Birmingham. His final line in Winston-Salem: .322, 11 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 21 RBI, 25 R, 18 BB and 32 K in 118 AB. .409 OBP, .525 SLG, .934 OPS. 5/6 in SB.
  18. QUOTE (knightni @ May 10, 2009 -> 05:30 PM) Let's prove to Major League Baseball that we're stupid and that they shouldn't pay attention to what we think! Fans shouldn't vote because this statement ends up appearing true every year. So if this means the fans won't be able to vote, that's all the more reason to support this.
  19. It was very good. More comments in the spring TV thread.
  20. Mizzou took 2 of 3 from Kansas this weekend. Today's game had a ridiculous ending. Mizzou was up 12-7 going into the 9th and had a solid lead pretty much the whole game. Mizzou's closer came in in the 7th and for some reason Mizzou's manager decided to stretch him out to close it out. My friends and I joked that he would hit the wall in the 9th and not be able to get anyone out. That's exactly what happened. With 1 out in the 9th, Kansas had the bases loaded down 12-8 and tied it on a grand slam. The next batter hit a triple and then a hit batter (which resulted in some jawing). Finally, Mizzou brought in a new pitcher and he got a K and a flyout to get out of it. The 2nd batter of the 9th for Mizzou hit a walkoff to give the Tigers the series win. After a horrible non-conference season, Mizzou is currently in 2nd in the Big 12 and looks safe to continue their regional streak. This year would make 7 straight.
  21. Yeah that Carter line is one of the weirdest lines I've ever seen.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 9, 2009 -> 08:32 AM) I thought MB fell in the draft because he was a draft and follow? Yeah, but the point is that they did get him late regardless. Teams weren't clamoring to take him in the top 2 rounds.
  23. Why are we taking guys that throw mid to high 80s in the 3rd round? Mark Buehrle types fall deep into the draft like he did. Draft velocity early, wtf.
  24. QUOTE (RockRaines @ May 8, 2009 -> 01:33 PM) I dont think Scotty would have been considered a top 50 guy if he never played with Jordan. I'll buy Jordan pushed Scottie to be better, but the Bulls went to a conference final without Jordan and we all know how that went down. Scottie was at least a Hall of Famer on his own team.
  25. Anyone who says LeBron is absolutely kidding themselves. They are different types of players. Kobe is more like Michael, but still isn't anywhere near as good. Kobe needs to win a title as the best player before he belongs in the discussion. He might this year, but it's not a discussion. You can make a much, much better case for Chamberlain or Russell over Michael for sheer dominance, but at that point you are comparing apples to oranges.
