QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jun 4, 2006 -> 07:40 PM) It will be interesting to see Mizzou win tonight, because they will probably throw Schezerer tomorrow. Mizzou follows through with that. 2 complete games on the day by freshman pitchers. 4-1 is the final. Scherzer will probably start, but only go maybe 4 innings. He'll be going on 2 days rest...

John Sickels' Minor League Ball blog (Link) had a mock draft today. People participated representing each team. mrkupe took the Sox and drafted the following: 29) White Sox: Adrian Cardenas, INF, Florida HS 73) White Sox: Cory Rasmus, RHP, Alabama HS 105) White Sox: William Benson, C, Illinois HS 135) White Sox: Charles Brewer, RHP, Arizona HS 165) White Sox: Ryan Jackson, SS, Florida HS I was the Pirates and made a lot of picks I'm not even sure on heh. It's tough when someone takes somebody you are going for and don't know enough of the high school guys to take one of them with good confidence. I really doubt the Sox go all HS but after the World Series win it's possible. On a sidenote, I'll have a look at the top college pitchers in the draft up on FutureSox tonight. Hopefully Monday I can do a piece on the top college hitters. I'd cover high school, but I wouldn't really don't know anything. With the way the Sox draft college players anyway, that's not the worst I guess.

Defending champ Texas is out after a 6-3 loss to NC State. The Longhorns only make it to the final 48 this year. Meanwhile Mizzou beat UCLA 2-1 to move on to the round of the 32 for the first time in a while. They face Pepperdine at 5.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 3, 2006 -> 01:06 AM) If I was a betting man, I'd look for them to take a "reach" in the first round this year, signing somebody who will take less than slot money. Yeah, sounds about right. Hopefully that fits Tyler Colvin. He remains my favorite of the guys we've been rumored to pick. -
QUOTE(Jimbo @ Jun 3, 2006 -> 02:14 AM) GO GO JAYHAWKS. College baseball's best name, Kodiak Quick comes thru. Now beat the beavers and lets take on the longhorns. It's double elimination. Kansas needs to win more than 1 more game to win the regional.

List of Potential Draft and Follow Candidates

I was checking out mlb.com's draft tracker. They have all the draft prospects sortable by name, school, position, and state. All the guys listed in this article were still on the draft tracker. I don't know if that means we haven't signed any of them or we have and they haven't updated the list yet. Just thought I'd throw that out there. -
In his last 11 games Collaro is 14-39 (.359) with 3 HR, 2 doubles, 7 RBI, 5 runs. Still 12 strikeouts to one walk during that stretch, but it's good to see improvement. On the year he's hitting .225 with 6 HR and 9 doubles. 4 walks and 50 strikeouts in 169 at bats, yikes. Still a long ways to go, but he's an intriguing prospect that at least is showing signs of life.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 30, 2006 -> 05:35 PM) They suck at picking em in the first round, but have done very good after that. Anderson, Fields, and Broadway are looking like 3 straight good first round picks so far.

List of Potential Draft and Follow Candidates

What about Yudelmis Hernandez? He joined Marrero and Jordan at Broward. He sounded really talented, but tore his meniscus his senior year. -
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 30, 2006 -> 01:29 PM) Hey maggs...random sidenote, but are you up for working on the draft review with Dan and myself (kind of like how we did the top 25?). Also if your interested in writing any draft preview pieces shoot em my way Ahh, the seemingly endless searching for info on obscure draftees. Good times, lol. I'm looking forward to this draft as I've followed college baseball for the first time and know some of the guys going into the draft more so than reading draft previews. It should be interesting to see how this draft unfolds, most people don't think there will even be 10 position players taken in the first round.

Couple of interesting Soccer stories...

Who wants to bet Ukraine goes 0-3 now? Stupid idea. -
QUOTE(OilCan @ May 29, 2006 -> 06:40 PM) Hey there guys. Is there going to be a write-up about the upcoming draft, and who the Sox might draft with their first round choice? Thanks. We're working on it. Expect stuff to start coming out soon.

QUOTE(daa84 @ May 29, 2006 -> 02:12 PM) Anyone who follows big ten baseball, can you give me a rundown on Michigan? thanks I followed the Big Ten a little and I could have sworn Michigan was an offense heavy team, but some of their pitchers have good numbers. They've gone through a lot of starters that would confirm my view that they had a good offense, but lacked pitching. Maybe they've finally found some decent starters.

QUOTE(SnB @ May 29, 2006 -> 11:31 AM) Saw it last night, I thought it was good. Maybe I should have prefaced that by saying that I'm not a huge fan of comic book movies and was just looking to be entertained, it suceeded. Ditto. I watched the X Men cartoon back in the day, but didn't mind the changes in the storyline. I'd rather not be expecting certain things to happen. I liked that drastic things happened instead of a day in the life of movie. Who wants that? Who wants nothing to happen? And most of all who actually likes Cyclops? I was happy he was killed.

Mizzou got in as the 4 seed in the Pepperdine region. They'll be headed to Cali for the 2nd straight year. Apparently the committee views Missouri as a western state because last year Mizzou was sent to Fullerton. This year Mizzou is sent to Malibu and St. Louis is sent to Fullerton. Go figure. Either way, it's time to f*** up some west coast baseball. Pepperdine has to face Scherzer in the regional opener, good luck with that lol.
-
QUOTE(Jimbo @ May 29, 2006 -> 02:03 AM) as a 6 seed in big 12 tourney, they would have gotten in?? They were on the bubble before the Big 12 tourney. Most of what I read said that after the first two wins over OSU and OU they were very likely to get in and the win over Mizzou practically locked it up. They tied Baylor in the conference standings and Kansas was playing better ball before Baylor towards the end of the year. Baylor was viewed as the 6th Big 12 team in terms of getting in the tourney. There's still an outside shot that the Big 12 gets 7 teams with Missouri being the 7th.

QUOTE(thomsonmi @ May 29, 2006 -> 12:51 AM) He throws in the low 90s. I called him a poor man's BMac. No, he doesn't have BMac's K numbers. But, I still think this kid has a chance. He has the tools. He is built alot like BMac which is the main reason for the comparison. That's fair. I like Russell myself, but I was puzzled as to a comparison.

QUOTE(Jimbo @ May 29, 2006 -> 12:27 AM) Jayhawks are tourney bound...i dont think i have ever said that in baseball!!!!!! Big 12 champs It was their first Big 12 tournament title (which has only been around for maybe 10 years, think basketball). They would have gotten into the tournament in all likelihood anyway.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 28, 2006 -> 11:42 PM) Yep, tomorrow at 9:30 on ESPN (or ESPN 2) they will have the selection show. Fullerton just finished off a double header sweep of arch nemesis Long Beach State and our coach moved in as the 2nd winningest coach in conference history (our prior head coach is kicking ass at Texas). Also, I would love to see them move to wood bats but people always cite cost. I've long said MLB should just step up to the plate and pay for the costs of the bats because these guys playing with wood bats for 3-4 years will make them more prepared for the adjustments to the professional level and scouts will be able to better evaluate guys since they won't have to make assumptions of how they will handle wood bats. I will be hitting up one of the games this weekend, now its just a matter of seeing who Fullerton will be hosting. Yeah thanks for f***ing up a bubble team in LBSU. I don't see how they could make it over Mizzou, but there are a lot of other teams that Mizzou has to get in ahead of. While I like the ping and uniqueness that brings, wood bats would help to push along the quality of college baseball. More high schoolers would go to college as opposed to the pros. Honestly, I wouldn't mind seeing a rule where teams can't draft high schoolers after the first 5 rounds or something. In the long run it will help both college and pro baseball. College baseball will be improved and will therefore gain popularity. Pro baseball will benefit from the easier predictability of the draft. If the draft becomes more predictable than more people will care about it and that will also add to the popularity of college baseball. It works both ways and builds on itself IMO.

The conference tourneys ended today. The brackets come out tomorrow. Mizzou is right on the bubble. They lost to Kansas by giving up a run in the bottom of the 8th on an infield hit and 2 errors on groundballs. They probably needed that win to get in the tournament, but we'll see. I was looking forward to Scherzer mowing some team down in a regional opener to pull an upset. Either way I'm still excited for the playoffs. College baseball is a lot of fun when played well.

Where's the BMac comparison? His strikeout numbers are way lower and walk numbers way higher. I think Russell is a solid pitcher, but he needs to start going deeper into games before I will consider him a solid prospect.

QUOTE(loltrain @ May 25, 2006 -> 11:02 PM) Javier Vasquez: Career 4.28 ERA including 4.91 and 4.42 the last two years. Most of that coming in the national league. Jose Contreras: Career ERA also 4.28 Jon Garland: Career 4.42 ERA Scott Podsednik: Career .279 hitter with .730 Career OPS. Bullpen: Cotts: Career 4.27 ERA Politte: Career 4.06 ERA Jenks: Basically a rookie, who can count on that? And I'm quite certain most of these guys numbers were even crappier before you won the world series last year. So finally, let's compare: C: Rodriguez v Pierzynski - Rodriguez 3B: Inge v Crede - Even OF: Monroe v Podsednik - Podsednik (barely) Maroth career ERA: 4.68 Robertson career ERA: 4.70 Verlander: a rookie, who can count on that? Bonderman career ERA: 4.94 Podsednik is a leadoff hitter, you can't use OPS. He's a career .279 hitter as you said with a career on base of .347. Both decent numbers for a leadoff guy, but you can't forget the fact that he's averaged 57 stolen bases per year over the last 3 years. Walker career ERA: 4.02 Seay: 4.39 and basically a rookie so who can count on that? Zumaya: rookie who can't be counted on Tata: another rookie Jason Grilli couldn't stay on our roster and Chris Spurling, please! "And I'm quite certain most of these guys numbers were even crappier before you won the world series last year." Right so winning the World Series means you weren't as good before you won it? Well duh! We f***ing won it though which means we are better now, meaning career numbers should be thrown out the window. Obviously this applies with the Tigers as well being such a young pitching staff, but I thought I'd use your logic against you to see how you like it. I Rod over AJ? Usually yes, but right now AJ has a higher batting average, on base percentage, and slugging percentage. Shh, don't tell anyone. How is Inge even with Crede? Crede is finally hitting stride and even if you don't believe it will last his career average (.258) is 20 points higher than Inge's .238 not to mention better power numbers from Crede historically despite basically even ones this year. How is Podsednik barely better than Monroe? You need to look at other stats than OPS and not use OPS for leadoff hitters. Podsednik has a higher OPS this year despite not being a better power hitter. I'm sure GMs everywhere would love to have a guy like Monroe that's got a .295 on-base percentage going for him, oh wait. The Tigers are going to be in the playoff race the rest of the way for the simple fact that they could go 1 game under .500 the rest of the way and still win 90 games. I say the worst case scenario for the Tigers is they play around .500 ball the rest of the way anyway. I don't think there is anyway they keep up this ridiculous pace. They are getting lucky breaks right now. They are playing good baseball, but not this good. The pitching is just outrageous right now and will go through streaks of great and average through the rest of the year IMO. I don't think the Tigers will make the playoffs because I think they will fade to low to mid 90s in wins and the Yanks, Red Sox, and White Sox will all have more than that. They could very easily have the 4th best record in the AL...and not make the playoffs. The Indians won 93 last year and didn't get in, and that's right about where I see the Tigers finishing this year.

Yeah, even if a couple guys go pro they should be better in 07 than 06. Who knows how good that actually is. I've said it before and I'll say it again, but Sherron Collins is overrated. He's a great ballhandler and can score pretty well, but he's not a PG, and too short to be a great SG. He'll be a good college player, but nothing spectacular by any stretch.

Official Soxtalk 2006 World Cup Thread
danman31 replied to DePloderer's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 25, 2006 -> 07:06 PM) If Rooney AND Owen could both get fit, then yeah England could actually win it. But my tip is Argentina. Quiet build up, everyone thinks Brazil is the favorite, but the Argentinians have a lot of quality in their side. A lot of teams are capable of winning it, but I don't see anyone but Brazil or Germany winning. I know that's rather boring, but the last 3 World Cups have gone to Brazil and a host. Brazil lost to host France in the final in 98. I don't know how they can be beat if it's not by a strong, hosting Germany. -
QUOTE(Jimbo @ May 25, 2006 -> 08:51 PM) Dumb article, Kansas folks are morons sometimes...This is probably KU's best chances in 10 years though. This year's team should be good, but next year's should be much better if they don't lose anyone to the pros. We both know that's a big if though.
