Carter with another bomb, geez. He's too good for this league, that's clear. I can only hope he doesn't slow down in full season ball again.

Charlotte off for All-Star break. North division beat the South division 9-4 in the Southern League All-Star game. The Barons played on the South. Corey Smith 3-4, 2 doubles, and a run. Nanita 2-4 with a double and a run. Lumsden 1 IP, 1 R, 1 K, 3 hits, and the loss. Broadway 1 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 1 BB, 2 hits. Wasserman 1 IP, 1 R, 1 K, 1 hit. LaMura K'd his only batter. Box Score Winston-Salem lost 5-0. Egbert 6 IP, 1 R, 4 K, 3 BB, 4 hits, tough luck loss. Box Score Kanny won 8-3. Cunningham 3-4, 2 RBI, run, BB. Castillo 2-4 with 2 runs. Johnson 2-4, run. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 9, 2006 -> 07:48 PM) There are reasons for summer leagues. In all honesty we have no idea how KW sees the situation. Its not like LF is really the hardest position to learn either... if manny can do it anyone can. Im not saying he will be in LF but im saying it isnt out of the possibility. Manny is an awful comparison. If Fields is going to play LF like Manny then I don't want Fields playing LF.

Charlotte won 4-1. Owens, Velandia, and Gonzalez (HR #4) each with 2 hits. Haeger 5 IP, 1 R (unearned), 9 K, 1 BB, 2 hits, win #10. Phillips 3 innings of shutout relief before the AAA all-star break. Logan with a 1-2-3 9th for his 3rd save, looks like he is settling down in AAA. Box Score Barons off for the all-star break. Southern League All-Star game tomorrow. Nanita, Smith, Wasserman, Broadway, Lumsden, and LaMura are the Barons on the team. Winston-Salem scored 2 in the 9th to win 6-5. Roberts 2-4 with a run. De Los Santos 3-4 with a double and 2 runs. Torres started, but was shaky. Box Score Kanny lost 14-9. Cunningham 2-5 with an RBI and 2 runs. Sanchez had only 1 hit and 3 Ks but hit HR #7. Richard got beat around pretty good. Box Score Great Falls and the whole Pioneer League off today for some odd reason, weird considering it's a Sunday and they don't have an all-star break. Bristol tied 1-1 in the 4th. Updating Box Score

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Jul 9, 2006 -> 07:14 PM) . Ever heard of the position LF........ A course its no guarantee he will be there far from it, but its not out of the question at all. He's hasn't played LF in the minors. KW can see this situation as easily as we can. If he wanted Josh at left in the future he would be playing there in AAA. It's a near guarantee that he won't be playing LF. Best case scenario in terms of LF for Josh is that he adds it as a position he can platoon in next year as he learns on the fly or something. He won't be starting there.
-
Fields looks like a DH down the road anyway. Maybe next year he can play 3rd and DH when Crede or Thome are off. He'd only be playing 2-3 times a week but that's the best case scenario I see, at least within this organization.

QUOTE(DonkeyKongerko @ Jul 9, 2006 -> 04:09 PM) Mark it down on your calendars, Italy's next appearance in the final game will be in 2018. I get it. Final every 12 years. Goes back all the way to 1970, impressive. Forza Italia! -
All these good pitching prospects going today and none of them performed. Take a look at the amount of stolen bases for Charlotte, wow. Owens has 28 on the year (!) and Rogowski stole 2 for 21, now that's surprising. And Sweeney stole home....

Soccer Tips: Any advice for a goalkeeper?

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 8, 2006 -> 05:27 PM) Wear your team's colors. Not sure why goalies wear totally different colors from the rest of the team. Is it so we can tell them apart ? I've heard it's that and somebody told me goalies wear vibrant colors to distract shooters. I'm not sure it works, but he played some goalie in high school. -
His name is legally Maurice but goes by Stefan (middle name). BA had him listed as one of their top 50 college seniors so he's been on their radar for a while.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jul 8, 2006 -> 12:06 AM) I just hope he's not the next Schnurstein or Francisco Hernandez. I suspect he's not, given his size compared to those two, and he's producing more than them also. Without witnessing him first-hand, I'd say the Sox saw something in him, which is why they started him off at Kanny at 19. He only got 50 ABs, so it's not like the Kanny failure should weigh heavily on his future. Yeah I know. I was thinking about Hernandez as a worry. I remember looking up info on Carter after the draft and thinking he had potential. His numbers in Bristol were raw but the potential still looked to be there. He's done really well at Great Falls but he has a long way to go, we'll see. Micah did well in Arizona and then mediocre in Great Falls so he's a slightly different story. Carter's power numbers are through the roof, but he has more HRs than doubles which is slightly odd. I'm not a huge stat guy so I don't really know what that means but seems very odd for the minors.
-
Carter with HR #7. It's so hard to imagine he could do so well in rookie ball and struggle so much in Kanny. Hopefully the Sox saw something he was doing wrong and fixed it during extended spring training.

Northwestern hires Fitzgerald as football coach
danman31 replied to Goldmember's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Yeah, I agree, but under the circumstances NU couldn't have done any better. I'm assuming the first year or two is basically going to be coaching by committee anyway. -
QUOTE(maggsmaggs @ Jul 7, 2006 -> 08:28 PM) Hard throwing righty Juan Moreno wins with 6.1 innings, 1 run (unearned,) 4 hits and 12 k's with 0 walks! Holy crap. Those numbers way above what he had been doing. He had 10 K, 6 BB in 16 IP before today. He's 19 and I'm going to guess was in the DSL last year. Finally one of our rookie ball pitchers catches my eye. Hopefully it wasn't a one-start wonder.

Northwestern hires Fitzgerald as football coach
danman31 replied to Goldmember's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Great hire in a lot of ways. They had to stay within the coaching staff given the circumstances and now they have a guy who was going to be a coach down the line anyway. They are able to have a full hire as opposed to an interim. They stay within house meaning he's likely to stay at NU down the road if he's successful. He's already been a key factor in recruiting, which is also very important. The players like him. The only problem is his lack of experience, hopefully he's ready. -
Soccer Tips: Any advice for a goalkeeper?
danman31 replied to Gregory Pratt's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
For my college IM team we had a goalie who had never played before but was a good athlete so we figured he could pull it off given the lack of a real goalie. The one thing he had trouble with was being aggressive. Be aggressive on breakaways and any opportunity you have to get the ball, get it. Even if you miss the ball or don't get there in time it puts pressure on the attacker and makes them at least think about you. If you're lucky they'll even panic and miss. I've barely played goalie before but this sounds like a similar scenario and I noticed that aggressiveness was the hardest thing for him to learn. -
QUOTE(Capn12 @ Jul 7, 2006 -> 12:51 AM) Danman, quick question...I'll admit I don't keep up with the minors even remotely as close as I used to. Has Broadway been as good as his numbers portray? Whats the long term forecast for him seem like to you, or anyone else that reads these threads. When the Sox first drafted him I wasn't sure what to expect, but he's been quite impressive. He started the year on fire. After a start on May 13 he had his ERA at 1.42 and before today's start it was at 3.15. Basically he has gone through a bit of a rough patch, but pitched well today and his numbers on the whole remain very good. Just now I'm looking at his splits and it's always interesting looking at splits for Charlotte and Birmingham. The home/road numbers really do change quite drastically. Birmingham inflates averages and deflates power. I don't have the exact number but opponents are hitting almost/about .270 against Lance this year (as of June 26). His ERA has risen since then so the numbers are probably about the same/higher. That's pretty disturbing but it breaks down .293 at home and .247 on the road. That's an amazing difference. Yet, power numbers are sapped at home as opposed to the road resulting in a far lower slugging and OPS. What I'm trying to say is, it's kind of difficult to read pitchers in Birmingham. His walk numbers are good. His WHIP is 1.29 which is a bit high, but again the big park may be moving that up just enough that it could be around 1.20 which would be very acceptable. The thing that I like about Broadway, and the thing I'm beginning to notice about college pitchers in general, is that he goes deep into every game that he is pitching well in. He seems to be a solid pitcher who can go deep and won't walk anybody. I got very stat heavy in this reply, I'm usually not a big stat guy, but I like Broadway more than any of our other pitching prospects. That says a lot considering I wasn't very thrilled with the pick at first. I have similar, but more negative feelings about the McColluch pick so we'll see. Broadway seems a lot like Buehrle. I know that seems cliche because the organizational approach to pitching prospects are all guys you could compare to Buehrle. However, I think it holds most true with Broadway. He rarely walks guys, goes deep, will give up hits, but will also occassionally get shelled because he is always in and around the zone.

Knights won 5-1. Fields 1-4, RBI, run, 2 K. Rogo 0-2, 2 BB, 2 K. Sweeney 1-3, 2 RBI, K. Randolph with a solid start. Logan, finding his groove in Charlotte lately, got the save with 3 K, 1 BB in the 9th. Box Score Barons won 2-1. Getz 2-4, triple, BB. Collaro 3-4, double, run, RBI, K. Broadway 8 IP, 0 R, 7 K, 0 BB, 6 hits. Box Score Winston-Salem lost 3-1. Whisler with another solid start: 7 IP, 2 R, 4 K, 3 BB, 8 hits. Box Score Kanny lost 8-2. Ricks 0-1 but 3 walks I felt was worth mentioning. 4 errors for Kanny, giving up 8 runs on 5 hits. Interesting to note that Brian Bogusevic, who some people thought the Sox would take in last year's first round, started and only last 4 innings. The interesting part is that his ERA is above 9 in 6 starts in low A while Broadway has a sub 3 ERA in AA. Way to go Sox. Box Score Great Falls rained out. Bristol lost 6-5. Gartrell 2-5, 2 doubles, 2 runs, K. Espinal 3-4, 2 2B, RBI. O'Donnell 3-4, R, K. 3rd rounder Justin Edwards struggled again. Box Score

It's a good trade because the guy they gave up is 24 so isn't a big prospect despite the numbers and Weaver isn't any worse than the back end of the rotation as is. It's worth a shot.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jul 5, 2006 -> 11:30 PM) Cortes is really holding his own. He was probably a little out of his league to start the season, but he weathered the terrible defense that plagued Kanny early in the year, with his peripherals and hit rate have been improving ever since. He's just 19, so he's well ahead of the age curve in the Sally league. Holding his own should be considered a victory. He'll be one to watch in the second half and next season. Yeah I was thinking that. An above average season by the end of the year would be a nice victory all things considered. Kanny is still a horrible team but at least some individuals are beginning to overcom the fact that the team is bad on the whole.

Charlotte rained out. Barons lost 8-0. Aldridge 2-4. Liotta got rocked again, ERA at 4.93. Munoz and Pollok both very good out of the pen. Box Score W-S won 12-3. Cook 2-4 with a HR, 3 RBI, 3 runs, and a walk. Recently promoted Daron Roberts went 4-5 with 2 RBI and 3 runs. Rod Allen 3-4. Kelly, Lucy, Smith, Mercedes with 2 hits each. Egbert 6 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 7 K, 2 BB, 5 hits. I just realized Oneli Perez got promoted to Winston-Salem a week and a half ago. Box Score Kanny lost 3-1. Hernandez 2-2 with a double, run, and a walk. Cortes 7 IP, 2 R, 4 K, 2 BB, 6 hits but the tough luck loss. Good to see Cortes and Brooks improving lately. Box Score Great Falls lost 5-4 in 13. Carter another HR (#6, 2 run shot). Reves 2-4. Box Score Bristol lost 8-4. Some Espinal guy who is 19 years old hit his 2nd HR of the season. Box Score
