QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 12:05 AM) Hopefully someone like Brentz is so high up on their board, they can't pass him up. Brentz is hardly a stud though. He's seen as a "safe" college hitter with moderate upside.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Jun 7, 2010 -> 12:00 AM) Ima say Wojo myself. With Workman and Wimmers as the other options sadly. It WILL be a pitcher no doubt. Perhaps they're throwing everyone for a loop and have a surprise up their sleeves. I'm not counting on it though.
-
I'll say Workman.

Walk-off home run from Greene after the Dash gave up 5 runs in the top of the 1st. Griffith with a horrible line: 4 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 0 SO.

Watching Matt Purke pitch for TCU. If you like good pitchers, turn this game on. Guy's a beast. Dialing the fastball up to 94/95 from the left side then making hitters look silly flailing at his changeup, and that pitch was supposedly weak this time last year.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 01:58 AM) It was a good pick, I truly feel. For cheap teams, you get 3 good years from those guys in your bullpen, and then you unload them for prospects. I'm still not seeing it. What returns more in a trade; stud closer or stud player who has any non-bullpen role? Cheap teams in particular need to build through the draft and you certainly don't build your team around a closer. After all, you have to get to the 9th with a lead in order for a closer to have any value.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 01:49 AM) You also have to remember how pathetic the Nationals bullpen was last season. Why stock up your starting rotation only to have an awful bullpen? You can always convert a starter to a reliever though. Plus you can pick up very good bullpen arms much later on in the draft. I just don't like limiting your potential value from a first rounder so significantly by taking a reliever.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 01:42 AM) Like how the Nationals took Storen last season, even though that was a damn good pick. Given how cheap our organization is with the draft, I wouldn't be a fan of this type of decision-making. Storen is good, but is any reliever really top 10 worthy? Even first round worthy? I don't think so. I agree though, I wouldn't like to see the Sox employ this strategy.

QUOTE (SoxPride56 @ Jun 6, 2010 -> 01:29 AM) This might be a stupid question, and not even realistic, so don't kill me. I have read that the 2010 draft is weak, a few good players at the top, then a bunch of question marks after. I have also read that the 2011 draft has A LOT of great talent. My question is, can the Sox not sign there first round pick this year, and then just have 2 top 15 picks next year? Because don't you get another pick if you didn't sign your pick the previous draft? They could do that. The 2011 pick would be unprotected though, meaning you'd likely have to reach for a signable player therefore making the whole process pointless.

Charlie Shirek, he of great control, managed to walk Josh Vitters, he who does not believe in walks. He's also given up 10 hits in 5 IP.
-
Doyle with a great start; 8 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 8 SO Bellamy gave up a run but holds on for the save in a 2-1 win.

Keith Law with the same info keithlaw: Hearing #Royals exploring deal with Grandal for pick 4. Could push CSale to Arizona, Harvey to Mets. #mlbdraft

QUOTE (danman31 @ Jun 5, 2010 -> 01:27 AM) I missed the first 3 innings, but he didn't even hit 90 in the 4th. That's quite a ways off from the scouting reports isn't it? Yeah he's supposed to be more 91-93. Could just be an inaccurate gun though. He had the cutter working pretty well at least
-
Serafin got lit up; 4.1 IP, 12 H, 6 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 5, 2010 -> 12:59 AM) Since you seem to be subscription king, what does Callis have for the White Sox in the new mock? McGuire, with Workman, Wimmers and Wojo "in play".
-
Workman only working 88-90 in the 2nd. Command was a little off too as he was missing up. Did get a strikeout on a good slow curve though and froze another batter with a harder curve. Had a couple of nice cutters in there as well.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2010 -> 09:30 PM) Wow, I hadn't even seen the draft rumbling about Grandal. That's great news if true. Reds are a threat to take Grandal, but I have a feeling they'll look at pitching. They took a catcher high in the draft a few years ago that's playing better (Morasco, I believe his name is). Devin Mesoraco, and yeah, he's having a great year.

QUOTE (DirtySox @ Jun 4, 2010 -> 09:25 PM) http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/blog?name=m...%26id%3d5252652 I'm poor. No idea what the rest says. Basically it just says the Reds are interested in McGuire now that there's a chance he could slip to them. That would allow Grandal to move from 12th to 13th.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2010 -> 09:19 PM) A question to ponder: if Grandal falls on draft day due to some of the uber-talented tough signs being picked high (Wilson, Karsten, Allie), do the Sox take him? Supposedly he's asking for Buster Posey money which would presumably price him away from the White Sox.
-
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 4, 2010 -> 06:22 PM) I wanted him when i thought he could start. As the draft got closer and it being pretty clear he was headed for the pen my enthusiasm lessened. I still really like the Mitchell pick. That happened? I don't remember it personally. There was some mild talk of scouts wanting to move him to the pen because his delivery wasn't all that smooth, but with two plus pitches and the ability to hold velocity deep into the game, the consensus seemed that he would be a starter.

QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2010 -> 05:31 PM) Anyone else see the interview with Deshields Jr. on ESPN2 this morning? Not exactly the most exciting public speaker. They asked him why he is excited to play professional baseball, and he said it's all about the money. At least he's honest. I can respect that.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 4, 2010 -> 05:18 PM) What the heck? When it comes to the draft, I'm much more optimistic. I was all over Beckham and Mitchell the last two seasons, in a good way. I must have forgotten those two instances. It just seems that you enjoy bashing the Sox to the point where you'd almost rather see them lose just so you have something negative to say. But hey, maybe it's just me.
