  1. QUOTE (CSF @ Aug 25, 2009 -> 12:38 AM) Wow. Lost in the Silverio hype, this guy has put up some nice numbers: 7-2, 1.81 ERA, 89 IP, 67 hits, 26 runs (19 ER), 19 BB, 80 K, 0 HR, 0.96 WHIP. Age; 22. The only pitcher I'm really interested in from the DSL team is Darwin Matos.
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 23, 2009 -> 11:53 PM) Wasn't D2: the mighty danks on the DL? Was http://futuresox.com/frontpage/?p=1259
  3. Charlotte at Gwinnett Carlos Torres with the start Birmingham at West Tenn Winston-Salem at Lynchburg GM1 Winston-Salem at Lynchburg GM2 Kannapolis vs. Bowling Green Joe Serafin starting Great Falls vs. Idaho Falls Bristol vs. Kingsport GM1 Bristol vs. Kingsport GM2
  4. QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Aug 23, 2009 -> 07:22 AM) I still think that they took the wrong Beckham. Take a look at his numbers, I know that he's 3 years younger than Bacon but his OPS has been pretty low considering he's been playing at low levels, not much power production or speed numbers either. And terrible defense. That was supposed to where a large amount of his value came from, the ability to play SS, but even that's not looking good for him at the moment. Obviously he's still young but if the Rays were picking again, you can bet they wouldn't take Tim.
  5. QUOTE (oldsox @ Aug 23, 2009 -> 02:39 AM) I never saw a final list of signees. Is there a link available? http://futuresox.com/frontpage/?p=121
  6. QUOTE (WCSox @ Aug 22, 2009 -> 02:59 PM) No, I'm all for OPS. But we already have a lot of players who hit homers and walk. A contact hitter with good (and efficient) base-stealing skills would bring some much-needed diversity to this lineup. I don't know if Getz will post a high-enough OBP to fill the leadoff spot, but I'm getting sick of all this station-to-station crap. Having a diverse lineup is all good and well, but fact of the matter is that OBP, SLG and therefore OPS all have a much higher correlation to runs scored than batting average does, OBP between the two is a wash but Nix' SLG is much better so therefore having him in the lineup will on average lead to the team scoring more runs than with Getz playing every day.
  7. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 22, 2009 -> 05:07 AM) Well Ozzie disagrees with you, and his opinion is the only one that matters: "[Nix] is going to be my utility player as long as he wants to," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "This kid is a great utility player. I think our plan is having [Gordon Beckham, Alexei Ramirez] and Getz at their positions for the future. "[Nix] can help us a lot when we need him. He's playing very well, but am I going to pencil him in every day? Time will tell. "Now we have three guys and we count on those guys for a long time." This is a man who has kept DeWayne Wise on a Major League roster for over a year, his opinion may be the one that matters, but that certainly doesn't mean it's right.
  8. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 06:09 PM) I have Jayson Nix as being worth about 9 more runs then Getz defensively. I’m sure there are people more adept at this sabermetrics stuff then me, can anyone check my math? I make it 8.2 runs on defense and 7.5 runs on offense. So in significantly less playing time than Getz, Nix has been worth 16.7 runs or approximately 2 wins more than him. But he's not a grinder so he couldn't possible be better :insert perplexed emoticon here:.
  9. I don't believe in turning points or momentum, certainly not in baseball. We've had so many supposed turning point or momentum gaining victories this year but we always end up falling on our faces soon after. We're a slightly above .500 team and we'll continue to play that way for the rest of the season, I wouldn't expect us to start playing .750 ball just because of a nice day.
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 01:18 PM) Ironic that on a board that has been b****ing for years and years about an "all or nothing approach" there's a thread about an injury to a guy who can do a lot of things being a good thing because it gives a prototypical all or nothing hitter more playing time. It's not ironic. I haven't been clamouring for a lineup full of grinders, and like I said right at the beginning of the piece the majority of Sox fans want Getz. So there's really no irony involved. And as for the people arguing that Getz is the better hitter, all the stats disagree with you so I don't see how you can have an argument, but for those of you who are still trying to argue it, Nix' defense is so much better that any slight offensive edge that Getz might inconceivably have would be eliminated by Nix' defensive advantage. Also was that a typo or did you really mean that Getz can do a lot of things? Because all I've seen from him is the ability to hit for mediocre at best average, with a below average OBP, almost non existent power and below average defense. The only thing he's been good at is stealing bases and those are hugely over valued as it is.
  11. From Ben Badler: Hudson done, 5 IP, 1 R. FB 90-93, good changeup, solid slider.
  12. QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 08:07 PM) Wow, Burnley up 1-0 on ManU early. Fantastic volley. Burnley wins it 1-0, ManU not looking too hot early on this season. Tottenham smashed Hull. Valencia has looked decidedly poor for United in these first two games. I don't remember his first touch being this weak when he was at Wigan. I think Man Utd might really struggle to score goals this season as all their strikers are in the creative mould as opposed to the "give me the f***ing ball so I can score" mould.
  13. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 20, 2009 -> 12:38 AM) Hudson is falling behind in the count against everyone in the first inning+. Yeah, he's made his way safely through 2 innings now but his pitch count is at 44 already (23 strikes).
  14. Charlotte at Durham Hudson vs. Sonnanstine Birmingham vs. Montgomery GM1 Birmingham vs. Montgomery GM2 Ely pitching Winston-Salem vs. Potomac Kannapolis vs. Lexington Sauer starting Bristol off Great Falls vs. Casper
  15. QUOTE (VAfan @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 11:35 PM) Count me as a person who prefers Nix as the regular and Getz as the backup. The only problem with that is that Getz isn't really much of a utility guy because it's doubtful he could play SS or 3B. So it is actually Nix's versatility that is hurting him. To my mind, the valuable offensive stat is RC27 or runs created per game. It's the easiest stat to understand. A team made up of this player will score this many runs per game. Nix, with increased playing time, has increased his RC27 to 5.20. Getz is at 4.64. By contrast, the difference between Jim Thome and Paul Konerko is a run per game (6.74 v. 5.73). Now, if the fielding numbers can also be trusted -- to my eye in limited action I don't see Nix as such a stellar 2B (for example, his bobbled ball that led to Oakland's 5 run inning last week that nearly cost us the first game in Oakland) -- then Nix should certainly be starting and getting more ABs than Getz. Plus, I see far more upside in Nix than I see in Getz. Getz never will have any power. If he hits the ball down the line he can leg it into a double, but he's not driving the ball to the wall, for example, and never over it. So he's a singles hitter with the ability to steal. Not insignificant, but not that useful unless he can really increase his walk rate or batting average. Nix seems to me to have potential to increase his average, while keeping his ability to walk and hit the ball over the fence. I'd take Nix. I can't say Im a big fan of RC27 and it's certainly not useful for comparing players at different positions because obviously a team full of DH's is going to score more runs than a team full of 2B's. It also uses total bases as the core of it's calculations and TB's don't weigh each event in proportion to their run values. If you want a sole offensive statistic to look at then wOBA is your best bet, and if you want a statistic that is put into run values then RAR (runs above replacement) is probably the way to go as it takes defensive value and positional adjustments into account.
  16. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 11:15 PM) I've been banging the drum for slotting for a long time. I have no idea why the union would oppose. Its more money for established players. If you draft a HS kid, he should be your property through his college days. Trading draft picks should be allowed. A world wide draft makes some sense but I think that will wait. It has to happen. Too much money is being given to guys who will be busts, and believe me, the majority of the guys that got over $1 million will not be productive major league players ever. While this is undoubtedly true it still makes an awful lot of sense from the team's perspective because buying production on the free agent market just isn't that cost effective. It's much more beneficial for a team in the long run to spend money on these draft picks because even if only one or two hit and become productive major leaguers you're still saving huge amounts of money over buying that production on the FA market. So I can't agree that too much money is being spent on them. And like Balta said, there's no guarantee that this saved money would be spent on bringing in veterans anyway.
  17. QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 10:58 PM) We need him to be 100%. I would entirely be in favor of letting him wait it out until next year if need be. He is healthy, he said his ankle is fine it's just about getting his arm up to speed now.
  18. Great to see Quentin heating up, we're really going to need him down the stretch if Dye can't turn it around.
  19. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 02:00 AM) anyone know what Peavy's pitch count was? 67 with 44 for strikes.
  20. QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 01:12 AM) On the positive side, no walks and 5 k's. He'll be ok. This is what I'm most concerned about. There have been errors and bloop hits and solid hits but as long as the K's are there and the walks aren't then I'm happy.
  21. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 12:53 AM) Really? The Nats put the cuban-style out clause in there? Is that even allowed for players that are drafted? He is under the Nats' control for 6 years. Boras was on WFAN earlier today saying that Strasburg's deal is basically worth $19m guaranteed by the Nats just tendering him an offer in those final two years and if Strasburg pitches as many think it will be worth much more. This is also the same for Dayan and Alexei as was referenced by Hahn.
  22. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Aug 19, 2009 -> 12:09 AM) Nix is a solid sub at SS and 2B even though he is prone to errors. I like him, but the injury to Getz is not good IMO. Getz is a solid young player, but I do think Getz and Nix complement each other Nix may be somewhat prone to errors but his range is fantastic. Defensive range is easily one of the most under appreciated aspects of baseball, it's so much more important than errors that it's not even funny, yet people only remember the errors because that's what they see.
  23. A velocity reading would be great if anyone's watching. I'm having to settle for the radio feed which isn't giving much, they did mention a 65 pitch or 4 innings limit though.
  24. Charlotte at Durham Birmingham vs. Montgomery Postponed Winston-Salem vs. Potomac Kannapolis vs. Lexington Bristol at Bluefield Great Falls vs. Casper
  25. QUOTE (Wanne @ Aug 18, 2009 -> 10:57 PM) On a collegiate level...I'm actually shocked and pretty thrilled Josh Spence from ASU (the Aussie lefty pitcher in the CWS) didn't sign with the Angels. He was a 3rd round pick i believe. He either feels he can do better (which I'm not sure about)...but honestly I think he just wanted another year of college. Who knows. That and Toronto didn't sign another ASU recruit, Jake Barrett (3rd round). ASU only lost 2 recruits to signing this year. They'll be stacked next year I think. Barrett's a stud. Toronto were one of the big signing day losers for me failing to sign 1S pick Paxton, 2nd round pick Eliopoulos (two Canadians) as well as the aforementioned Barrett. It's not like they didn't just save bunch of money by trading Rios either. Must be a pretty weak month to be a Blue Jays fan.
