QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 17, 2010 -> 12:27 PM) Stefan Gartrell was sent down too. And Viciedo.

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Mar 16, 2010 -> 03:29 PM) Santo Luis should also be fun to watch for JPN with his K numbers, though who knows how he'll manage jumping a level. I'm not that optimistic. 26, first time above A ball, second organization. His numbers from Winston-Salem in 2009 are not encouraging. I think he has control issues as well. I wouldn't be surpirsed if either Bellamy or Remenowsky take the closer job from him if one or both of them are in B'ham. Luis couldn't hold onto the closer role in 2009.

QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 16, 2010 -> 03:34 PM) Just Hynick was dropped from the 40-man roster. Armstrong will be assigned to a team later in spring training--or possibly dumped then. But for now, he remains on the 40-man. Armstrong was a NRI.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 17, 2010 -> 08:39 AM) Westmoreland has survived his surgery and is currently in intensive care. Good to hear.

Jason Botts and Daniel Cabrera were released, so that clears things up some. Update forthcoming tonight.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 17, 2010 -> 10:43 AM) Not sure that's true - he was outrighted yesterday, and I believe that means there is now some period of days where he can be claimed, before he then can decide if he wants to be in Charlotte. And I agree with Sonix on the OF/DH/3B situation. Viciedo at first means you have these OF/DH/1B types: Gartrell, De Aza, Kroeger, Botts, Bohn. And that is the order of playing time, I believe. Gartrell and De Aza will start daily in the OF, and Kroger/Botts/Bohn will rotate through DH, RF and the bench, and occasionally relieving Viciedo at 1B. I'm not sure about 3B though for Charlotte. But its clear that they see Viciedo moving to 1B, and that is more important to them than who they have at 3B in AAA. I was just going by the press release on Hynick, so yeah, it's likely he's on waivers. I guess we'll have to wait and see. I read that he's been fighting shoulder inflammation and that's why he hasn't pitched so far. I'm waiting to see if De Aza is sent minor league camp before I put him in Charlotte's projected starting lineup. If that's the case, I think Danks wil return to B'ham for the first half. Since he missed time due to injuries. I think the 3B job is open ended on purpose so that if they want to load up the lineup, they can play Viciedo at 3B, and put one of Botts/Bohn/Kroeger in the lineup at 1B. I wouldn't be surprised if Viciedo splits time between the two positions, at least through the first half. It should be interesting to see how it all shakes out. It's always difficult to peg Charlotte's lineup, but I think B'ham's is dead on pending Danks' assignment.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 17, 2010 -> 08:40 AM) Does that mean he cleared waivers? Must have.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Mar 17, 2010 -> 09:00 AM) Do you really think they'd play Botts over De Aza? De Aza is younger and has a better shot of actually contributing to the major league team in some capacity this season. It just depends. I'd say Botts would play more over Bohn than anybody, especially with Botts being a switch hitter. De Aza's fate is still up in the air, he seems to definitely be playing himself into a starting role at Charlotte. Charlotte's potential roster at this point is wide open though, so my projection is a best guess.

New version up in the original post. Brandon Hynick bumped from the 40 man roster and outrighted to Charlotte.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 16, 2010 -> 01:54 PM) Viciedo won't be playing 3B in Charlotte - he'll be starting at 1B. OF will be Danks, Gartrell and Kroeger, with Botts and Bohn sharing DH and bench OF duties. I'd bet on that. The reason I have him at 3B is because I'm not sure who else would start at 3B in Charlotte. Botts is playing mostly LF and Kroeger is mostly playing 1B in ST. I think there is a gray area of who's playing 1B and 3B in Charlotte on purpose so that Chris Chambliss will have the luxury of starting Viciedo either at 3B or 1B on any given day depending on what the Buddy Bell and Kenny Williams want. I could see Danks starting out in B'ham now with Mitchell on the shelf and De Aza playing so well.

QUOTE (scenario @ Mar 16, 2010 -> 09:30 AM) We'll see. He may have been targeted for W-S before spring training, but minor league rosters aren't set yet. I'm still pegging him for Winston-Salem.

QUOTE (scenario @ Mar 15, 2010 -> 11:55 PM) Morel, a talented third baseman, probably will be headed to Double-A Birmingham, while the left-handed-throwing Leesman will be part of the starting rotation with the Barons at Class A Winston-Salem. I'm trying to figure that one out.

QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Mar 15, 2010 -> 11:22 AM) Hmmmm. Maybe my vote for CJ in the Final Bench Spot Poll wasn't sooo crazy. Not crazy at all. He's competing with Lillibridge and Nix, I'd give him more of a chance than either of them. Funny thing is, when Nix started his rehab assignment in B'ham last year, Retherford was forced to the bench.

QUOTE (scenario @ Mar 15, 2010 -> 01:30 AM) Sox sleeper Retherford waking people up (Trib article by Mark Gonzalez) When the White Sox break camp for the regular season, it was expected Jayson Nix or Brent Lillibridge would make the roster. Not both. And now maybe neither, after manager Ozzie Guillen said he is "very, very disappointed" in both of them. Enter C.J. Retherford, a 24-year-old who has never played above Double A and has never been considered a top prospect. "I love that kid a lot," Guillen said. "So far (everything) we ask him to do in spring training he does — move the guy over, get big hits. He's a sleeper, but he has started waking people up. "The report I had was everything he does is ugly, but he gets it done. As long as you get it done, you have a chance to play in the big leagues. I like those types of players that go out and do the little things and let the big boys do the rest.'' Retherford basically is a second baseman, and the last infielder will have to be versatile enough to also play shortstop and third. "You can put this kid anywhere, I think he will play (well)," Guillen said. C.J. being C.J. I'm glad people are seeing what I saw all last year. He's going to be a great major leaguer.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 14, 2010 -> 02:08 PM) One of the Red Sox top prospects, 19 year old Ryan Westmoreland (5th round pick out of high school in 2008) is going to undergo brain surgery to try to correct a potentially life-threatening condition. A "cavernous malformation" in his brain is what I read. That is awful. Rather tear a ligament than deal with that. He is the Red Sox top prospect.
