  1. So the court upheld Prop 8 after all - as dumb as I think Prop 8 was, I actually agree with the ruling. If the people voted, and effectively changed the state's constitution, how could you say it was unconstitutional? It's there to stay, unfortunately. edit: And the gay couples who were married before while it was legal are grandfathered, their marriages aren't nullified.
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 26, 2009 -> 12:56 PM) I saw that first quote earlier, and I have to say it does bother me a bit. The second quote I hadn't seen, but the word "policy" is fuzzy anyway. She didn't say law, but she also didn't say precedence or jurisprudence. So here is one that threw me for a loop... the articles I've read are saying she would be the first Hispanic named to the court. I actually thought Alito was hispanic, but I guess he's not. Before he picked Roberts, I remember a press conference where Bush jokingly nodded towards Alberto Gonzalez. Holy s*** that would have been awful.
  3. QUOTE (Cknolls @ May 26, 2009 -> 12:29 PM) Probably less than the Democratic filibuster of Hispanic Judge Miguel Estrada. Mainstream Media= The Republicans dare not filibuster an hispanic woman! Miguel Estrada successfully filibustered by the Dems= MSM SHHHHHHHHHHH! Things I've also heard: Sotomayor was actually a policy director under Stalin. She's been arrested 4 times for trying to break in and burn the Constitution. Every morning, she sprinkles her cereal with burnt babies.
  4. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ May 26, 2009 -> 12:26 PM) While I agree Iraq is better today, it doesn't change the fact that the whole thing has been a fiasco. I'm not sure what the best option would be to handle problematic countries/governments, but whatever it is, it hasn't been tried recently. Agreed, all of the circumstances surrounding it make it one giant clusterf***. You could easily question whether the end justified the means.
  5. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 26, 2009 -> 10:51 AM) Were you reading the same game thread I was? For the first couple innings it was a mire of how bad everything on the team was, the whole team sucks, the world is falling apart, etc., etc. I can think of one poster in particular whose name I won't mention that was really b****ing about Danks.
  6. QUOTE (WCSox @ May 26, 2009 -> 11:19 AM) Anderson doesn't have 54 HRs and 71 2Bs over the past two full seasons. Granted, Anderson hasn't had anything near Young's playing time, but his horrible approach at the plate would make 20 HRs difficult (8 in 2006 with 405 PAs). Crede (.306) and Alexei (.309) are proof that OBP isn't everything, especially in the bottom half of the order. And before you get the wrong idea, I've gone on the record several times here in support of the Vazquez/Young deal. Solid starting pitching trumps all, IMO. I meant as far as having tons of talent and not necessarily living up to it.
  7. I think I've said this in this thread already but the idea that a justice only decides based on the Constitution is a fallacy. If it was that easy, we wouldn't even need to have a Supreme Court, or we could just have a computer do it.
  8. QUOTE (Cknolls @ May 26, 2009 -> 10:12 AM) 0. For the past 2 weeks they've been talking like they were in the mood to fight no matter who was nominated.
  9. I mean, it's a nice thought and all, but every judge is going to have an ideology to some degree. Too bad we couldn't have more Kennedys or O'Connors. But they both get criticized for not having principles, whatever that means.
  10. Well, yeah, but realistically do you think a liberal is ever going to knowingly nominate a conservative, and vice versa?
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 26, 2009 -> 09:25 AM) So in other words, they never did fully shut down their program when they said they did because they just managed to put together a nuclear bomb in six weeks or so. I'm shocked.
  12. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 26, 2009 -> 09:33 AM) Not with TCQ probably headed to the DL for awhile. Even if he's on the roster, if you have BA and Pods hitting in the high .200s and flirting with .300 (in BA's case his OBP has been comfortably over .350 for a while) I don't see how anyone could justify giving Wise too many starts over either one. I get the cynicism, but I still don't see it.
  13. If BA and Pods both keep playing like this it looks like Wise will be the odd man out and end up stuck in Charlotte for a while. He couldn't have had worse luck with that injury.
  14. QUOTE (WCSox @ May 26, 2009 -> 09:19 AM) Young had a combined 54 HR, 71 2B, and 44 SB between '07 and '08. Agreed that his OPS is indefensible, but his combination of slugging percentage, speed, and defensive capability are definitely above league average. Given that Crede's OBP hung right around .300 in his first few years in the league as well (and hasn't really improved much since), I wouldn't write off Young just yet. I don't foresee him ever hitting at the top of the order, but the talent is definitely there. Hell, you really could say the same thing about Anderson today which would make that whole thing moot.
  15. Obama to nominate Sonia Sotomayor as his pick, a Hispanic and a woman. Let the games begin. What are the odds of an arbitrary Republican filibuster?
  16. Going back to LeBron's buzzer beater, what's the big deal, why is everybody on his nuts? It's like people have never seen a buzzer beater in the playoffs before. This one didn't even come at any special time, like to clinch the series. I guess hitting a 3 to win a game and have them down 2-1 instead of 3-0 after losing the following game is a big deal?
  17. QUOTE (Soxfest @ May 25, 2009 -> 10:52 PM) Yahoo is so far behind! So is Gameday
  18. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 25, 2009 -> 10:28 PM) Depends...when does Wise come back? As much as we semi-jokingly talk about this, I just can't see Ozzie putting BOTH Wise and Pods in the same lineup considering they are both LH.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 25, 2009 -> 10:20 PM) UGH. Rowand 123 ab,302 ab, 157 ab=582 ab Fields 20 ab, 373 ab,32 ab,145 ab=570 ab Why would you completely ignore Rowand's 4th year and give the 145 ABs for Fields?
  20. Maybe if KW had tried to deal for Peavy today he would've accepted.
  21. QUOTE (Soxguy @ May 25, 2009 -> 09:47 PM) I live 20 miles from Anaheim and can't watch the game on TV, this is annoying! Got to love MLB's blackout policies.
  22. OMG THE ANGELS SUCK SO BAD, THEIR SEASON IS OVER
  23. QUOTE (Reddy @ May 25, 2009 -> 09:26 PM) i hate these hats. just goofy. I was about to ask why are they wearing those?
