  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 01:41 PM) Unreal Te'o's getting so many first place votes by people. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf...-klein/1714173/ As bad as it sounds, the deaths he faced this season may actually work in his favor in terms of the Heisman. He's not only an outstanding player, he is now an even better story.
  2. QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 01:22 PM) I'm still not giving s*** to Trout. Last year, in a close game, you KNEW Cabrera was going to beat you. You just had to hope and pray that when he got up, your lead isn't so small that he can chew it up with one swing. Trout had a great year, but it just wasn't what Cabrera did. Cabrera didn't win MVP because he won the Triple Crown, he won the Triple Crown because he had an all-time great season at the dish. Trout beats out Cabrera easily on defense, but it doesn't add enough value to overcome how much better of an offensive player Cabrera was. Trout just wasn't scary. He was pesky. A great hitter who was fast too -- awesome for him. Cabrera was f***ing scary. Like I've said before, Trout was arguably not the scariest hitter in his own lineup. Missing a month of the season counts a lot too. It makes it more impressive that he racked up those numbers, sure, but he wasn't helping his team all that time. It doesn't matter that it isn't his fault. Cabrera didn't miss anything, he was playing without a left foot for quite a while there. The Angels were only a few games away from the playoffs and Trout wasn't there early to win them those games. Check this article out. EXCLUDING DEFENSE, Trout was STILL the better player. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/t...ntext-included/ Then when you add in defensive value, there is really no question who the better player was in 2012. I don't care "who was the more feared hitter", because you know what, Adam Dunn was a pretty feared hitter too, but on defense or on the basepaths, he was useless. Just because they both posed a long-ball threat on any pitch doesn't make them better than someone who can doesn't do 1 thing tremendously, but all things great. Trout was a threat on defense, on the bases, and at the plate.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 09:55 AM) Bill James notes on the Sox http://www.southsidesox.com/2012/11/19/366...s-handbook-2013 Lot of interesting stuff there, most notably to me, Sale w/ more pickoffs than Buehrle, and the A's being LAST in manufactured runs (% not noted though, which is more relevant).
  4. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 11:07 AM) That is the entire point of WAR is so you can compare different eras and have some semblance of relativity. The problems will lie in the lack of defensive numbers (B-R uses hard statistics that tend to mislead while FanGraphs are determined by placement of batted balls which they have no data for from DiMaggio's era). I also don't know where that friend got the 8.6 number. From what I see, he's at 7.8 bWAR and 10.6 fWAR I hadn't considered that, but it makes sense. Maybe that's why WAR should not transcend eras that far apart. I knew there was a reason you couldn't compare then to now, but I didn't remember specifically why. And to be clear, fWAR is all I recognize.
  5. QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 10:16 AM) People don't even moderate anymore We're all too civil End the oppressive swear word filters f*** yeah!
  6. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 10:41 AM) So I'm curious, what's your opinion on people owning big cats, chimpanzees, venomous snakes, wolf/dog mixes, bears etc...? I think I wouldn't want to live anywhere near those people. And I would feel just as uncomfortable (probably more) walking past people with those animals with them as I would someone with a pitbull or other breed I talked about.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 09:07 AM) A bit of fuel for the fire... A Yankee friend's facebook post. That's dumb because you shouldn't be comparing WAR that far apart in years. WAR is relative to what is considered a replacement level player in that current season. What was considered replacement level then is not what is considered replacement level now. I'm not 100% certain on this, but I don't think WAR transcends different eras like that.
  8. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 09:55 AM) Akers vs. Gould would be a nice match up. I need this matchup to dominate. Rooting for a 15-12 game.
  9. I don't buy for one second that it's some major coincidence that pitbulls are the ones people fight with, or that you hear about having to have their jaws broken to release something, or that you hear are extremely violent. All breeds are not one the same level of temperament and likelihood for violence. Yeah, I agree you CAN raise a perfectly friendly pitbull and you CAN raise an evil golden retriever, but genetically these dogs are not the same and it's no coincidence which one tends to be the violent one of the two.
  10. And the other team I need to lose is up by 5 pts, and his opponent still has Crabtree left to play. Holy s***, this Bears/49'ers game is going to be huge for my playoff hopes.
  11. Interestingly enough, the team I need to LOSE is up by 4 pts with 0 players left. His opponent, however, had Robbie Gould left to play. Hoping for a ton of FGs from both teams Monday night!
  12. Wow, Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown scored 0 pts for my opponent. I am now down by 7 pts with David Akers left on my team..... 2 (40-49) yard FGs and an extra point would give me a tie. Considering the Bears defense, this may actually work out for me if it means the 49'ers have to keep kicking FGs. This will be reeeeeal close.
  13. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 01:54 AM) I wouldnt compare traveling into a war zone with people being allowed to keep a certain breed of dog in their own home. Not with people being allowed to keep a certain breed of dog, I am saying just because people are scared of going to certain areas of the world, some people are just scared of certain breeds of dogs. Just because I feel scared around a pitbull doesn't mean I feel scared around dogs in general, just the ones I associate with violence. I consider myself a big dog lover, but that doesn't mean I love every breed of dog.
  14. Oh man, all 3 of Dexter, Homeland, and Boardwalk had some pretty crazy endings. Since they are so fresh, I proceed w/ spoiler tags..... Dexter: Homeland: Boardwalk:
  15. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Nov 18, 2012 -> 08:15 PM) This seems pretty ridiculous to me. I didnt know that many people were scared of dogs. That's like saying people who say they are afraid to travel to Afghanistan or Iraq are scared of people. It's not dogs in general, it's certain breeds of dogs that are more violent than others.
  16. QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Nov 18, 2012 -> 07:18 PM) I always get projected 130+ per week, i never actually get it though. Today was a real stinker: mcgahee 6 morris 7 Amendola 4 Fitzgerald 1 Denarius 0 Scott Chandler 3 Oh yeah, I rarely reach my projections too, but it's frustrating when it happens against a horrible team. I mean, this guy is playing 7 guys vs. my 9, and he is still going to beat me, despite being 2-7 this year. Andrew Luck had a chance to save me, but he just threw an INT, dashing my hopes again. Now losing 45-52. I'm not sure if I have scored less than 80 pts yet this year.
  17. Now projected at 44. I've never seen a team be projected for 135, and end up with 44. I'm so salty right now. This should have been a cakewalk.
  18. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 18, 2012 -> 06:31 PM) Pretty narrow view. Any dog can be trained to be violent. It's the idiot human, not the dog who's the one that causes a pitbull to be dangerous. Yeah, but knowing that a pitbull has the capability to snap and kill someone makes me never want to be around them. I've never had the fear of a golden retriever or a lab snapping and trying to kill me. I've heard stories of having to break pitbulls jaws with a crowbar, but never a golden retriever. And for the record, I don't like to be around German shepards or dobermans or mastiffs either, it's not just pitbulls.
  19. I'd like to live in a place where pitbulls are banned. They are a violent dog breed that I don't want to be anywhere around. I understand the frustration of owners of pitbulls who can't take them with them, that sucks for them, but I understand why certain places have this ban. One thing about the law that seems unfair is the apparently broad classification of what is actually considered a "pitbull". I've heard a lot of breeds get unfairly lumped in to that category of dog.
  20. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 18, 2012 -> 05:58 PM) Look, anytime you choose to be a fan of a team like Notre Dame or the Cowboys or the Celtics, whatever, you are going to have to listen to a lot of people's opinions on your team. Those are very national teams with large fanbases, and those large fanbases tend to annoy the hell out of other fans in a way that others don't (because they don't have so many fans). Teams with huge followings tend to be very polarizing because you have an awful lot of people expressing their views to an awful lot of other people who get tired of hearing them. It has nothing to do with people loving to b**** about Notre Dame. It has everything to do with the Golden Domers rubbing their historical success in the faces of other fanbases and annoying the ever-living hell out of them. So of course they are going to take every chance to annoy you right back. Get used to it. And don't flatter yourself. Right, I'm just saying it goes both ways. People are "so defensive over ND" because so many people are so hateful of ND.
  21. QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 18, 2012 -> 05:40 PM) Thanks for proving my point. I knew you'd say that, but it doesn't make my point any less true. People just love to b**** about Notre Dame. Can't tell you how many tweets or FB statuses I have seen saying "Just 1 game closer to seeing Alabama crush ND by 50!". It's really sad how many people care more about ND losing than their own team winning.
  22. QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 18, 2012 -> 05:36 PM) Not just on here, but at work and on FB, ND fans are so defensive. Everyone I know didn't even go to ND. it's like no other fan base I have communicated with. Not just on here, but at work and on FB, fans of other teams are so hateful towards ND. Everyone I know didn't even go to a rival school or have a reason to not like them. It's like no other randomly spiteful fans I have communicated with.
  23. This really has been a real slow start to Free Agency. The largest deal signed so far was Jake Peavy's. I wonder if players are waiting until they meet with their families for Thanksgiving to make a decision? No idea, but it's been slow so far. Can't wait for the winter meetings.
  24. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Nov 18, 2012 -> 03:24 PM) My team has gone from a project 135 pts, to a projected 78 pts. I am playing a guy with is starting DeMarco Murray, and is playing Jared Cook, who is on a Bye week. This is going to be shameful if I can't beat his 2-7 team with 2 extra players. Projection of 78 has now gone down to 58. This is f***ing awful. Between Arian Foster, James Jones, Brandon Pettigrew, Miles Austin, and Texans D, I scored 12 points. Wow. This is pitiful. It's all on Luck, Ridley, and Welker to get me about 15 pts each.
