  1. QUOTE (WCSox @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 01:32 PM) Unless you're the Mariners, you're probably not going to get much defensively out of your starting RF. Plus, you could do a lot worse than Quentin in RF. His arm is mediocre, but still good enough to play the position. He certainly has the range (total UZR of 9.1 in ARI, vs. a total -21.1 UZR in LF). If you're absolutely dead-set against Quentin in RF, moving him to DH might not be a bad option. Especially considering the fact that he's constantly getting injured. Okay, I don't see the range at all. I don't know or care what UZR says, I don't see that with Carlos. Beyond that, half the time he doesn't even know where he's supposed to throw the ball after making a play. DH would be fine, but I think he's okay in LF. I just do not want that guy in RF at all. And I don't know what UZR says about Ichiro, but the Mariners aren't the only team out there with strong defense in RF.
  2. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 01:27 PM) It would be hard to give up Jenks without getting something in return because the reality is a healthy Jenks along with Thornton is a pretty damn good back-end of the pen. So if you deal Jenks, you should be getting a power arm or two in return, plus some financial flexibility (for it to make sense to the Sox). I don't know if another team will think Jenks is worht it to them, but thats what it would take for me to move him (which probably puts the odds at remote). In Konerko's sake, I could see the value in moving him for nothing. 12M would go a long way to do some nice things, but we'd also have a major void we'd have to fill in that lineup and there aren't a ton of guys lying around in FA that can put up those type of numbers that wouldn't take significant contracts. If we could move Konerko and go with a Holliday or Bay that would be fantastic, but again, I don't think it would be realistic, so we'd have to be able to get something plus the cash savings to make the move more beneficial (and would than probably have to acquire his replacement on the trade market and than maybe go with a Johnson or whomever, who could play 1B and DH). I'd want something useful for 2010 out of Jenks, but at this point it might be a situation where we'd rather not move him but we kind of have to do it anyway, and given the circumstances we should look for the best reasonable package of talent we can find in exchange for him. We had better be getting lots of cash for Teahen because if we're at about a $95M payroll in 2010 we're going to have some issues if nobody wants Paulie.
  3. QUOTE (WCSox @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 01:21 PM) DeJesus is an underrated player and would be a solid LF and leadoff option for us. And, sorry, but Quentin is a legit RF. At the very least, he's a significant upgrade over Dye and I don't see how he'd be any worse than Maggs out there (who also has a very average arm). I love CQ but as a defender he would make me vomit as a RF. Comparing Maggs to other RF is a bad argument. Compare Maggs to Nick Markakis then. I want some f***ing D this year.
  4. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 01:14 PM) I think he knows there will be good deals out there and DH is usually one of the easier positions to fill. Right now I think Kenny's focus will be finding that starting OF to go with Rios and Q and retooling the bullpen and giving himself some more financial flexibility so he can get Danks locked down, maybe go to Q for a deal (buying low), and of course freeing up the payroll necessary to add one more big bat. I really feel we see a few rumored Jenks/Konerko deals which give the club financial relief and some young arms that project to the pen (and maybe a young outfielder depending on the Konerko situation). I hope so. If the Dodgers, Braves, Mets, or Giants (all need a 1B) would take Konerko's deal without the Sox having to eat salary then I wouldn't ask for anything in return, and if I had to, I'd even throw in a halfway decent prospect or two. Jenks we should be able to get something for, but nothing fantastic or anything.
  5. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 01:15 PM) Rios is our CF'er. I know. But I'd much rather get a CF and move Rios to RF than bring in someone who sucks balls to play RF. Quentin would also suck balls in RF.
  6. QUOTE (Wanne @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 01:10 PM) Holy crap...WTF is the fascination with the friggin Royals?!? Olivo and Crisp were bought out by KC. Both should come very cheap.
  7. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 01:04 PM) Royals dont' have anyone else available that really would fit the Sox needs or at least I don't think they do. DeJesus would be a nice fit though. DeJesus would be a pretty bad fit IMO since he's not really a CF. And for the thousandth time (from me) PLEASE no Quentin in RF.
  8. BTW Kenny's comment about the DH spot possibly going unresolved until the end of the offseason makes me worry. It tells me 1) he has very limited funds, 2) it's not important enough to address immediately, 3) he's planning on waiting around until January to pick through the scraps. Wonderful.
  9. QUOTE (WCSox @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 12:57 PM) Pods is obviously trying to cash in on his comeback season. Nothing wrong with that, but methinks that it's an aberration and I'm glad to hear that he'll be getting that big contract somewhere else. +1
  10. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 01:01 PM) i clicked on this thread hoping to see Billy Butler's name in it Why would he be available?
  11. Olivo as a backup catcher? Coco Crisp in CF? Thoughts?
  12. WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, I love what Pods has done for this organization, but it sounds like we're FINALLY making defense a priority. All I can say is hell the f*** yes.
  13. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 12:00 PM) NOW it makes sense? This possibility has been on the table since the moment the deal was leaked... It was one possibility of several, it's not like this was obvious. For me this seemed the least likely of all rumored possibilities given what the Sox brass had said about Beckham as a 3B. But I still don't like the deal unless we're paying Teahen $2M or less after arb, because that would be a good price for him after getting non-tendered by the Royals.
  14. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 11:59 AM) I seem to remember him being quite solid in 05' and 06' or something...I swear he was looking solid defensively when he started settling in with the Royals...I remember him robbing us all the time and Hawk talking about how good he was going to be... I agree. He's looked good there in the past when I've watched him. At 2B and in the OF it's a bit of an adventure however.
  15. Now this deal makes sense to me. But I still want to know how much cash we're getting because Beltre is out there, and Beltre is about a zillion times better than Teahen.
  16. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 11:53 AM) In essence, they wasted a year with Beckham at 3B then. Some of his errors may have essentially cost us a chance at the playoffs, and now it's like we totally threw a season away. I hope this pays off. This could also have hinged on Viciedo's performance in the minor leagues. Maybe Viciedo made late strides and convinced the Sox he can play 3B in the Majors. If so then this decision was an easy one to make.
  17. QUOTE (tommy @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 11:49 AM) KENNY just said Teahen plays 3B and Beckham is our new starting 2B, well holy s***. Wow.
  18. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 11:39 AM) Plus you have some guys who could break-out and you just hit enough to contend, at the deadline make a move for a bigger bat to hopefully put you over the top. If the Sox go with Teahen/Hudson, could they get into the bidding and make a move for Manny Ramirez? Dodgers would probably pay a good chunk of cash so they could address other needs (pitching) and Sox wouldn't have to give up a lot prospect wise for a year of Manny. Not sure if I'd do it and probably not a realistic possibility. Manny for Konerko + Linebrink + Torres + McCulloch would be pretty nice IMO. We don't save any money, but we do dump Konerko's deal and 3 players I don't ever want to see again.
  19. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 11:22 AM) I've been toying around with something. Last offseason, one of the huge rumors was Teahen to the Cubs for Fontenot and Marshall. If we did that, got a solid lefty-bench bat, and a lefty-spot starter (with a heart-breaking curve).... would we be encouraged? Is this possible? If we could dump Teahen's contract and pick up Marshall I'd love that. So then it would be like Getz and Fields for Marshall + cash from KC, which would make it a steal for us. But that's probably not going to happen.
  20. We should cut Teahen now and just keep the money. Or better yet, cut Teahen, take the money, and use it to ship Linebrink's ass out of town.
  21. Wow, so the Twins picked up JJ Hardy for Gomez. Nice move by the Twinkies.
  22. QUOTE (WCSox @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 11:05 AM) I suspect that Hudson and Flowers would have to be a part of that deal. Because of that, I don't see it happening. Not only would I drive those guys to the airport, I'd build a rocket and launch them at San Diego.
  23. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) 1. I think everyone here dislikes this trade because theyre comparing teahan and dye if KW goes out and gets a bopper you then compare getz to teahan which while getz looks like he can be a pretty good scrappy young player with teahan youve got a guy that i see putting up atleast 15/65. Everyone needs to wait to see how this offseason rolls out. With what should be available on the free agent market at a cost of only money, not players, Teahen will have to perform pretty far beyond his norms to be worthy of his salary. Mark Teahen the player is not an issue. Mark Teahen the contract however is. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) 2. It'd be nice to have 5 stud starters but once you hit the postseason you dont really need 5 so if you can trade floyd or danks to bring in an adrian gonzalez i do it in a heartbeat. Hell Id be fine with seein carlos torres out there every 5th day if it means we got a young lefty bat that can give us 40 homers and 100+ RBI. We don't have 5 stud starters, we have 4 plus a very good back end guy in Freddy and a nice prospect in Hudson. There are no guarantees, and the last thing I want to do is weaken our starting staff. And Carlos Torres is terrible. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) 3. Sure it has the potential to be a bad deal in 3 or 4 years but would you trade a legit WS contending team for the next 2 or 3 years for a year or 2 of a potentially bad contract? I don't see Figgins as a guy who puts us over the top. I love prototypical lead-off hitters and I think those guys are generally undervalued by the common stathead fans these days, but that said, I think the Sox focus on putting s***ty players in the lead-off spot over recent years is causing some people to overrate the contributions of such a player. IMO team speed, team contact, and team OBP are more important overall, and though a guy like Figgins may help, he's not going to transform the offense into something that doesn't piss us off all by himself. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 10:22 AM) 4. Nick Johnson is just a cheap dream i think a lot of us have on this board have. the man has a career .402 career OBP you can not say that wouldnt look sexy in the 2 spot of our lineup. Plus he'd be our DH in my lil offseason so thi risk for injury is A LOT less. It depends on what he makes and how many years he gets. I like his skill set, but you have to keep in mind that you can't count on him being healthy, as a DH or anything else. If you commit salary to him then you need to be able to have something left over to pick up somebody else later on should he get hurt and find himself on the DL for half of the season. And if we're looking for a lefty-hitting DH, the difference in price between Nick Johnson and a guy like Matsui shouldn't exactly be a massive one, and if that's the case, then give me Matsui.
  24. QUOTE (2nd_city_saint787 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 09:51 AM) Trade paulie for the best starter/reliever combo you can get preferable a rather cheap one so you have the money to make a FA splash Trade Floyd and Hudson (and more than likely spects) for Adrian Gonzalez By trading paulie and floyd youve freed up a ton of cash in which i would use to go hard after chone figgins and Nick johnson thats how i would attempt to do s*** if i was KW youve then got Figgins Johnson Beckham Gonzalez Q Rios AJ Lexi Teahan with Peavy Buehrle Danks Garcia whoever you get for paulie that right there = Championship imo 1. We should start off by canceling this deal for Teahen since he's not worth his contract. 2. I'd love Adrian, but I wouldn't give up Floyd or Danks. They can have Hudson and all the prospects they want, and if they won't take that, then we look elsewhere for a bat. 3. Chone Figgins at 4+ years or whatever he's going to get has the potential to be a pretty bad deal. Once his speed declines he's essentially a glorified bench player. 4. Nick Johnson can't be counted on. He should be pretty far down on our list this offseason.
  25. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 09:50 AM) Yeah that probably was a bad comparison but he's one of the Brewers top prospects and was a top 30 prospect in baseball going into this year. My point was basically he's not the kind of player we should realistically be looking to acquire. You say the Brewers might dangle him for pitching. Well, that means bye bye to Floyd or Danks and I would not be willing to do that. I don't want Gamel anyway. I was just saying that unlike Beckham, he's not an untouchable.
