  1. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 5, 2008 -> 02:02 PM) Like I said, college stats should be taken with a grain of salt. Beckham is the better athlete and the more hard-nosed player. From the video I have seen and the games I have watched, Smoak is the much better natural and pure hitter. The ball flies off of his bat. His power easily translates to the pro game. Plus, he has 40+ homerun power from both sides of the plate. However, Beckham's power most likely won't translate to the bigs. He might have a couple 20+ homer season, but I see him sticking in the 15-20 range. His swing has more flaws in it, and I absolutely hate his high leg kick when he swings. This is not to say Beckham is a bad hitter, as he is good. All I am saying is that Smoak is the better hitter overall, and is that impact bat we have lacked in our farm system for so long. Beckham is the better athlete and provides more speed and such. Beckham wasn't a bad pick, but I would have prefered Smoak. I would like to know your baseball experience, if you dont mind i dont know how you can make these predictions. How can you saw beckham's power wont translate to the bigs and smoaks will. Ya know there was a guy in our system with a natural swing. His name was joe borchard and he good sir is a bum.
  2. How can anyone like that smoak guy...he cant even spell his name right smoak should be spelled S-M-O-K-E. Stupid
  3. Good point about the lines being short i did notice that but that is only if he pulled which i bet he did plenty of. Im jus sayin that he probably lost quite a few bombs that woulda been out of every field today.
  4. Very happy about this SS with some pop
  5. Ruth may have faced inferior pitching but im also sure that he played a lot of games at fields like the polo grounds or shibe park or ebbets field where dimensions were over 450 feet to some fields. At todays fields Ruth would hit plenty of home runs, could you imagine if ruth played at Coors field?
  6. QUOTE (ChiSox35 @ Jun 4, 2008 -> 07:11 AM) Having not read most of this thread and being a lifelong Uribe supporter, Ramirez has my vote after the last few games. I know it's a small sample size, but to the best of my recollection he was pursued by many a team during the offseason, and this is what he was eventually expected to do. At this point in the season, whatever clicks offensively needs to stay until it stops clicking. Down with OCab! Bring on Juan for SS! No, but seriously, unless Cabrera starts producing like he's supposed to, there is no reason why Uribe and Cabrera shouldn't share the spot. While he's not batting .047 anymore, he got two of the s***tiest RBI I've seen last night. He's playing just as hit or miss as Uribe, only when Juan hits, he hits it onto the expressway. When Orlando hits, he hits it just out of the second baseman's reach. Plus, Uribe's cooler. I really hope this isnt serious. Cabrera is without a doubt a better shortsop than Uribe. Also you dont platoon a guy battin 240 on an upswing with a guy under 200. Also, there is absolutely no such thing as a sh**y rbi, and Uribe couldnt hit his way out of a paper bag. And the only way i could see uribe being cooler is from all the ice cream sandwiches im sure hes munchin on while on sittin on the bench.
  7. QUOTE (alexgtp @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 02:34 PM) Met Ozzie we were having dinner at the same place. Met Fisk. as I went to Grade with his son Casey. Met John Cangelosi as he likes to wet his whistle at the same watering hole I frequent for football. (he even bought me a cple beers and I got him a shot) Gabmled with Frank Thomas at the Hard Rock in Vegas (playing blackjack..he later moved to the VIP tables) Forgot to mention, I play college baseball and take hitting instructions when im home from John Cangelosi, great guy.
  8. Thought of another one. This wasnt directly me but my sisters friend is a pizza delivery guy. he delivers in Hinsdale which is where Jim Thome lives. He said he had a 20 dollar delivery and Jimmy tipped him twenty bucks.
  9. I was home from work yesterday and my mom called me. She said she went to get her nails done, and low and behold Bo Jackson is sitting next to her getting a pedicure. If that wasnt funny enough he gets a phone call and he says O, im just running some errands...Ill be back in a little bit. I live in suburban Chicago in the same town as Bo, I even went to the same high school as his kids, so this is entirely reasonable to me. Anyone else got any Sox player encounters?
  10. QUOTE (Texsox @ Jun 3, 2008 -> 08:31 AM) Someone please try and build a case why Walker is still the hitting coach? We've read forever that he's supported 100% inside the organization and the players seem to like him. What are they seeing that no one else outside the organization seems to see? He looks like Snoopy and that makes me smile
  11. What did you guys think about the Tribune talking about maybe bringing Eldred up, mediocre average but the powers there.
  12. That 4.5 pitches seen an at bat tells you something. I could be wrong but i dont think he led off in Oakland, maybe that screwed with his head. This guy seems like a good guy and a great team player, he was probably tryin to do too much by seein a lot of pitches while in the 1 spot and its carried over it does seem like he takes a lot of strikes
  13. Was watchin sportscenter a lil earlier and they gave a not so shocking fact. Of all the players in the majors with enough at bats for their averages to be relevant, we have the three lowest on our starting roster. THE THREE LOWEST IN ALL THE MAJORS. That doesnt necessarily surprise me that they are the lowest but it surprises me that they qualified for this. If someone is struggling this bad i dont care who you are you need to sit or go on the dl or something. Also, I wanted to see if anyone had any more info on swish. It seems all the talk about our hitting woes are centered on konerkos injury and thome, what happened to swish. He is a healthy younger guy, how do you fall in this kind of a skid? After his rookie year his average and obp went up 18 and 50 points respectively the next year they went up 8 and 9 more points. Then this year He went post steroids Bret Boone. Its sad. And one more thing...Only four teams in the entire Major Leagues has grounded into more double plays....None of them are in first.
  14. I liked a lot of this but had a suggestion. When resting Thome and Konerko why not let toby hall get a few starts at DH, at least against lefties. He has been hitting the ball in limited chances and i know he wont bat well over three hundred for the year but let the hot bat play and give the anemic konerko and thome a break.
  15. First off all id like to thank all posters for helping to pass an hour at work today...Thank you. I agree with most of you that it is about time that walker left. You cant blame him for the offense not hitting, but something has to change, a lot of time bringing in someone new helps. I also agree with the ryan freel idea, he fast guy can lead off and play second. He also seems like a grinder type player that the sox like. I also wanted to say that Konerko needs to take accountability for his shortcomings. to say the effort is there is BS. He is the captain of the team, i would respect him a lot more if he just came out and said you know what we arent getting it done right now and its our fault, not that theyre trying. Heck if i wasnt hitting my wieght for the first two months of the season id ask to go on the DL. And one more thing, are they really trying? It just seems that they are pressing always trying to hit the long ball at least konerko and Thome. Where is this Ozzie Ball that helped us win it in 05. It seems like every time we have a guy on second with nobody out or someone on third with less than two we are trying to kill everything. With Konerko and Thome coming up in these situations why not just hit a ground ball to the right side, i have never seen them do this. And Thome, if your struggling as mightily as he is why not stay in the cage an extra half hour everyday and just hit to the left side. THome is a great hitter, at least a good hitter and he should be able to hit to the opposite field. It is an easy hit to just ground to third base when that shift is on. When your in a slump you should at least try these things to help the team out and stop trying to do too much. Sorry for the long post but i am frustrated, they wont be in first for long if this play continues.
