2010-11 MLB Offseason Catch-All
QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Dec 7, 2010 -> 12:48 AM) I'm not a big Quentin guy. I'm not holding my breath on another 2008. Even in 2008 I was a little skeptical. He had some no-doubters, but he also had a good share of wall-skimmers. In 2008 I had my choice of a signed Quentin ball or a signed Floyd ball, and I took the Floyd ball without hesitation - even knowing his peripherals. After last year, I've had enough of Quentin too. If he wasn't so bad on defense, I'd like him a lot more. He's adequate enough offensively to be a corner outfielder, even if half of it came in the span of a week and a half.

Pence and Quentin actually aren't far apart offensively. Pence is the much better fielder though. Quentin has the higher ceiling with the bat (Pence's ceiling wOBA might be .360ish) though.

QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 11:54 PM) Bourn isn't mediocre speed. He's had two straight 4+ WAR seasons. He might be the best defensive CF in baseball. We have enough range in the OF as is. As long as our RF isn't a -20-30 defender, we should be okay. I'd give Viciedo and Quentin for Pence right now.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 11:52 PM) The Sox have enough mediocre speed. Pence would be a bigger coup. Maybe Wade would be stupid enough to do Quentin + prospect for Pence.

QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 11:18 PM) Kevin Correia signed for 2Y/$8MM.......yikes. If I'm Freddy, I'm looking for at least that. Correia was brutal last year pitching in effing Petco. That's awful. Yeah, Freddy will get 2 and $12 if Correia gets that.

If the Pats did this to the Jets, I don't want to know what's going to happen this Sunday.

Very good win. Boozer absolutely dominated and made up for whatever Rose did not provide on offense. That's going to be the major difference between this year and last year. We finally have a legit second option on the inside.

Lol, they T'd Sefalosha and Boozer for basically nothing.

Rose is having an awful shooting night right now. Also turning the ball over more than normal. Still beating the Thunder by 17 though. I'll take it.

Dbacks have reached a deal with Putz
SI_JonHeyman Putz gets $10 mil guaranteed, 2 years from arizona I don't think the Sox wanted to give him two years.

Putz has agreed to sign with the Diamondbacks. Per Rosenthal.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 03:40 PM) His linedrive rate didn't see a significant jump between 08 and 09 although there was a 2 year period where his line drive rate was quite low. His K/9 increased this past season and his ground ball rate increased as well. I'm not disagreeing that Jenks threw some meatballs, but I also believe his numbers were inflated because a higher percentage of his mistakes were taken advantage of than is the "norm". I.e., the luck aspect. And I'm not one to throw out these advanced stats too often, but for 2M a year, I think the Sox would be fools not to bring him back. His LD rate stabilized at the end of the year. I think it was around 25% for a good portion of the season, which is pretty bad.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 03:35 PM) Unlucky? It was that high because he was routinely getting hammered. Lots of fastballs down the middle will give you a .370 BABIP alright.

QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 03:07 PM) I wonder what it would take to get Broxton.... is Colletti dumb enough to sell low on him? He lost his closer's job, so maybe?

Wow, I just found out that Marcum got traded for Lawrie. I'm late to the party...

QUOTE (iamshack @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 03:04 PM) I'm not buying it. Why would he want to commit to multiple years to play for the DBacks? Money?

QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 02:53 PM) Not far from the truth and that ain't no joke He was easily the worst starter out of the regular 5 last year. But Freddy had lots of things going his way for the majority of last season. We saw what he really was at the end of the season.

If Putz signs elsewhere, Jenks might be the next best option.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 02:36 PM) Matt Thornton needs to give him a call and whisper sweet nothings in his ear. I second this. Maybe the Konerko talks with the D'backs was actually the D'backs talking to Putz. They do have the same agent.

Ozzie said Freddy was his best pitcher last year, lol. I have a feeling the other 4 guys on the staff are sitting at home like "WTF?"

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 01:50 PM) I'm sure Ozzie will carefully examine those particular stats while completing his lineup card. He already has since he's gonna bat Rios 4th!

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 01:48 PM) But in both cases we can agree that the 'run producer' hits 4th and guy with the best average hits 3rd. I think it ultimately comes down to OPS and wOBA, as those have better correlation to runs scored than batting average or whatever you might use to measure runs produced.
