  1. QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 01:42 PM) I don't think it's as simple as best hitter = run producer. Ichiro's a much better hitter than Ryan Howard, for example. But I think in general you put your most complete hitter in the 3-hole. Dunn doesn't quite fit that criteria, but I think his OBP makes him the best fit there. See, you think the best hitter is a guy who hits for a high average. ' Bucket of suck thinks the best hitter is the guy who produces the most runs. There's a difference of opinion as to what characteristic the best hitter should have...
  2. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 01:27 PM) I thought you want your best hitter hitting 3rd and your biggest hitter (HR hitter) batting cleanup. Depends on what you mean by best hitter. Adam Dunn is the best hitter on this team, but some people might not believe that since he can't hit for average.
  3. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 01:22 PM) Rios' bat just scares me in general this season but batting him 4th is obviously a horrific idea. He went back to 09 form in the second half. I hear ya.
  4. QUOTE (Pale Sox @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 01:22 PM) I don't see the problem batting Dunn 3rd. Wouldn't you want the slugger with the higher OBP batting 3rd? Batting Rios 4th makes less sense. Ideally, you'd want your best hitter hitting 4th. It depends on the lineup, but in our lineup's case, you're looking at a .320 OBP in Alexei and a .330 in Pierre for the 1 and 2 spots. Dunn wouldn't have many hitters on if he hit 3rd so you'd be wasting his bat in the first around 35% of the time. I'd much rather have Dunn leadoff the second than hit with nobody on and two outs in the first.
  5. QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 12:58 PM) Yes please. It would likely take Q + Tank. At that price may as well go for BJ Upton. There's no way it takes both. Might be one or the other, but Quentin as the center piece would take more. Willingham only has one year of arb left.
  6. QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 01:07 PM) Ozzie: Pk knows we want him. Kenny and jerry have talked about it. The direction we are going in is a good one. Ozzie: Sale or thornton is the closer in my mind right now Ozzie: Biggest concern is to keep carlos quentin healthy and get him the at-bats he needs Ozzie on if PK is back: I want Dunn to hit in first innng so I might bat him third. May put Rios fourth to get speed between Dunn and PK - WTF? This all from Scott Reifert. That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. lol, yeah you want Dunn to bat in the first inning where he'll take his .400 OBP with nobody on base and two outs like 40% of the time. Great idea. And batting Rios 4th when you have Konerko and Dunn? Ewww
  7. Anybody got a Twitter list for all the baseball reporters like Athomeboy had with NBA free agency?
  8. Quentin + throw-in for Willingham?
  9. I think Balta mentioned this before. That model would work for a couple of years and then when the players aren't as good as they were when they signed the deals due to regression, you're going to be stuck with an old team who is overpaid and will underperform. That's where you'll get into trouble.
  10. QUOTE (joeynach @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 02:49 AM) Lol, never thought about that. It would be interesting to try and find that out. I remember a conversation from last year, cant remember if its was here or on 670 The Score, but I recall a fair amount of certainty that the sox were getting a good insurance payment on Peavy. I think this is a good topic to get Boers and Bernstein on, they would get to the bottom of this. I don't think they got any money last year. But if Peavy doesn't pitch this next year, they could be getting a decent amount of insurance money back.
  11. I have a slight worrisome feeling that the extra money might be coming from Peavy's insurance...
  12. QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 02:08 AM) Nats are likely to shop Willingham around. lol, let them have Carlos Quentin. I'd love Willingham in RF on this team.
  13. 2 new updates on the Konerko situation. MONDAY, 1:15am: Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that Monday's meeting will involve Konerko's agent and assistant GM Rick Hahn. With the Orioles viewed as the only other serious suitor for Konerko, there's a "strong feeling" the White Sox will get a deal done as early as this week. SUNDAY, 9:29pm: Reinsdorf will do anything he can to re-sign Konerko, a source tells Doug Padilla of ESPNChicago.com. If the meeting is with Hahn, they're talking contract details. He'll be back unless the two sides had different ideas for the contract.
  14. Well, that was weird... Konerko has one less suitor. Yay!
  15. QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 06:42 PM) Anyone think it's realistic that if Red Sox miss out on Crawford and can't come to some sort of deal for A-Gon without the extension they make PK a huge 2 year offer? Possibly. But they could also just try to re-sign Beltre.
  16. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 06:27 PM) The Phils still have Ibanez, Victorino, and Brown. No room for Quentin. Ibanez is almost 40. I think they would like to give him a bit more rest. Maybe they'll go with a Ibanez/Brown/somebody else platoon for RF and LF.
  17. QUOTE (pktmotion @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 06:23 PM) I think Mike Rizzo has firmly cemented his position as most hated GM in all of the league. Wonder if Philly tries to come hard at a Quentin deal now? Oh I hope they do.
  18. Indy's probably gonna miss the playoffs. Wow.
  19. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 04:56 PM) Considering what they added to their payroll, that's what should happen. Apparently Boston was only going 4 years for Werth. Boston's got a smart front office. Giving 7 years to anyone, especially a 31 year old, isn't a very smart move. I would have only offered him 4 at max too. Ideally, I'd sign him to 3 years.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 04:50 PM) I wouldn't say he's "Far superior", 120-130 OPS+ for Werth, 130-140 OPS+ for Dunn, career wise, so he's somewhat better...Werth though gives something quality on defense. And Willingham is probably a better defender than Dunn at 1B. So overall, the Nats improved their defense a lot while they didn't lose too much on offense.
  21. I don't see how it really helped when the play was on a 1st and 10 on the Detroit 22. It wasn't like we weren't gonna score or something. Plus, when the ball came loose, that wouldn't have been a fumble. ESPN just looking for storylines, as always.
  22. So I guess this means Willingham is moving to 1B. Their OF will consist of Bernadina in LF, Morgan in CF, and Werth in RF. Not bad.
  23. QUOTE (chunk23 @ Dec 5, 2010 -> 03:58 PM) 7/126 First ultra gigantic contract of the off-season. Crawford should be smelling his 7 year $140 million contract sometime soon.
  24. Well, Dunn and Werth aren't too far apart offensively, so the Nats really didn't lose anything. 7 years though? Kinda ridiculous considering the guy is 31.
  25. Shoulda been easier than this, but a win's a win.
