State of our starting pitchers
QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 22, 2008 -> 03:24 PM) Sabean aint that stupid, you would have to throw in a bunch of young prospects, even then I think any team can beat our offer for what they need (which is younger players who are cheaper, unless Sabean really believes his team can compete after losing Cain). The man traded Liriano, Bonser and Nathan for AJ, signed Zito, made a habit out of signing over the hill veterans, and drastically undervalues Tim Lincecum. I don't think we can put to many positive spins on his intelligence.

Jack Zduriencik named Mariners GM
So, the long wait for Kim Ng continues. Assuming that Amaro Jr gets the Phillies job after Gillick leaves (as most expect him to do so) I’m guessing the next GM opening will be in Washington.

QUOTE (joejoedairy @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 10:28 PM) lol like brook fordyce? That reminds of when i was younger i went to a White Sox clinic and got Chad Kreuter's autograph. My adolescent mind thought that was just the coolest thing. Nice Guy, though

Organizational Goal
What's the organizational goal? To Win. What should it be? Well, I wouldn't be averse to a win top-to bottom (majors-to minors) approach. Although, this would open complaints as to where the organizations priorities lie. I wouldn't mind our young players being shaped by a win now, and win always approach.

Backup Catchers
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 05:56 PM) Josh Bard has thrown out around 12% of potential base stealers in the past 3 years. So... we'll call it an improvement. Nah, good stat.

WS Winner
The Phillies offense is stronger, but the Rays rotation and balance gives them the edge

2009 Starting Pitchers
I can never predict accurately what Brian Sabean is thinking, but the last thing his organization needs is aging sluggers. The only bats they may be interested in other then the Q, Missile, Swish variety would be a package of people like Anderson, Allen, Shelby, Retherford, Gartrell and Cook .

Backup Catchers
The best option is probably Hank White. Otherwise, work Bard out and see how his health has progressed since his surgery. When healthy the guy was spraying the ball all over Petco, and was fairly steady behind the plate

2009 Starting Pitchers
QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 08:03 PM) I'm confused how we'd get Lincecum while keeping Danks and Floyd. IMO, we'd have to give up 1 of the 2. As has been discussed it's a pipe dream and is indeed, highly unlikely to ever occur. That being said, a package of Anderson, Allen, Shelby, Broadway, McCullough and a few other pieces (We're talking high upside bats, with maybe a Logan and a Egbert thrown in) would potentially sway the Giants as long as there was agreement that the Sox inherit a good portion of Zito's salary if not all of it. This is predicated on the Giants need for Lincecum being seemingly lessened by the emergence of Alderson and Bumgardener in their Minor League system, as well as the continued successes of Sanchez and Cain. Now, with Coopers recent successes, as well as some slight improvements shown my Zito in the second half it seems possible for his career to be somewhat revived in Chicago. As you saw, he was penciled in as the 5th starter in the rotation. Despite being a ludicrously wonderful thought, it's also highly unrealistic. So yes, I still stick to the idea that we'll be seeing the standard Buehrle, Vasquez, Danks, Floyd, insert FA starter here scenario.

2008 World Series - Philadelphia Phillies vs. Tampa Bay Rays
QUOTE (rangercal @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 01:35 PM) There is no way I can believe that. Rays in 6 I should probably say that I’m a Rays in six guys too, but I'm still a little shaky on Crawford. That 5 for 5 game did a lot to change my mind, but Crawford's health is still a little shaky in my mind. Yeah, Burrell’s had a significant drop-off this year, but maintained healthy numbers in the playoffs. IO guess power was the key here. Given that the Phillies two best pitchers (Hamels and Myers) succeed mostly on keeping the ball on the ground, and Kazmir and Garza have an unfortunate tendency of putting the ball in the air. That was truly my toughest comparison. So, I’m not going to argue that you have a point.

Winter Ball
QUOTE (scenario @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 09:56 AM) Makes me wonder if they plan to stretch him out to compete for the 5th starter position. I sure hope not. DJ Carrasco as your 5th starter in a wost case scenario not a definite possibility.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Oct 19, 2008 -> 11:20 PM) I really need to go back this off-season and watch the innings Price pitched. I know they were few and far between, but the hype on this kid has been incredible, and it looks like he might live up to it. Is he locked into the rotation for next season? I give him a 75% chance of knocking Sonnanstine either out of the rotation or off the team. Yeah, he's that good
