  1. QUOTE (miracleon35th @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 10:01 PM) Sox have made some unwise acquisitions and Shields is one of the worst. To make matters worse the Sox have been terribly unlucky on trades and with high Draft picks. Courtney Hwawkins? Carlos Rodon instead of Schwarber. Carson Fulmer? Instead of bemoaning that any further, it is time to look ahead.. We don't know that Fulmer was a bad pick. Rodon over Schwarber was the right call at the time and still the right call now. You are b****ing just to b**** about that one. Hawkins was a bad pick.
  2. Playoffs start tonight. I'm coaching obviously but is anyone heading anywhere this weekend?
  3. I bet the Cubs trade Arrieta if they win it all.
  4. QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 11:31 AM) The only reason I feel it may take more than that for Pollock is because the Dbacks have no pressing need to trade him. He only has 2 years left, and his last year will be very expensive, but I think there is a decent chance they will keep him if they aren't overpaid for him. One of those things I may adjust to either add a prospect, or improve a prospect. I was thinking of adding Zangari, partly because of the Goldschmidt-ceiling comps he's gotten anyway. I don't think Sox have the prospects to get Pollock unless they wanted Rodon honestly. And then the Sox wouldn't be able to pay him. He was a 6.5 WAR player in 2015 with a wRC+ of 131. One of the best players in baseball.
  5. QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 08:43 AM) "I can't believe these are the best two candidates we have." Carlin's got my response to that. God I wish he were still alive to talk about the current state of the country and this election.
  6. QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 11:19 AM) http://www.southsidesox.com/2016/10/26/134...eason-plan-2016 Like I said, I'll probably make that in to a thread once I figure out the payroll, WAR increases per position, and maybe fine tune the contracts offered a bit. That isn't close to enough for AJ Pollock and I doubt Arizona will trade him.
  7. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Oct 27, 2016 -> 10:38 AM) Which also means sell...if they're not going to sign any FA's with comp picks attached then there's no point in keeping this 70 win team together for another run at 4th place. Exactly. Some form of rebuild is only option. They aren't going to give up a pick to sign free agent. They shouldn't because the class sucks. They don't have prospects that they can afford to deal. They have a mid-market payroll. The only thing that makes sense is trading off assets. And I think that's what will happen.
  8. My wish list is for them to not give away any draft picks.
  9. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 24, 2016 -> 02:25 PM) I think if you find a talented quarterback you're 75% there. Look at the turnarounds made by the Cowboys, the Eagles, etc. A LOT of warts can get covered up by a decent quarterback and a few playmakers. Look at the Packers. Aaron Rodgers has been dragging a 5-11 roster to the playoffs for years. Indy might have the worst roster in the league of any contender.
  10. QUOTE (iamshack @ Oct 24, 2016 -> 02:19 PM) I think you guys overestimate how large the talent gap is. I think the results on the scoreboard make us look further away than we really are. I agree. They aren't that far. They are really injured at bad spots. Another draft and free agency period will do wonders IMO. Also need to know who the QB of 2017 and the future is. The NFL product is s*** right now though. They really don't have that far to get. Who is good in the NFL right now? Even the good teams have glaring weaknesses.
  11. QUOTE (Ezio Auditore @ Oct 24, 2016 -> 01:59 PM) The Bears will get crushed, because the Vikings are really good, and the Bears are one of the worst teams in the league with or without Cutler, but we pretty much know what (or who) the media will be talking about next week. Fortunately, one more half a season, and we'll be done with this. Vikings have the best defense in the league. They have the worst OL in the NFL right now though, not a great running game, and Sam Bradford is a statue.
  12. QUOTE (SoxAce @ Oct 24, 2016 -> 01:01 PM) There goes a top 3 pick.. Meh. You can't let Matt Barkley play. Developing young players is the key to the season and nobody is developing with Matt Barkley.
  13. QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Oct 23, 2016 -> 12:46 AM) Yep, this exactly. People say he's a godsend and just smarter than everyone else, but really, he inherited a team that was racking up top 5 draft picks, had unlimited funds to exploit international FA loopholes, and was able to sign veterans that would only be used to flip midseason for more prospects. Not saying what he did was wrong or a bad idea, but turning around the Cubs wasn't like turning around the Padres or Rays or Pirates would be. The Cubs had 0 incentive to ever try to compete while they rebuilt because their fanbase came for the party, not the team. They were going to hit their attendance goals and jersey sales even with 90+ loss seasons. Theo is the best executive in baseball. He has been for quite some time. Pretending otherwise is pretty silly IMO.
  14. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 22, 2016 -> 07:10 PM) Why would they make Rice and Loyola play in the quarters? How many early potential rematch games are there? I mean that's bad. Loyola and Rice should not have to play til the state finals IMO. THey didn't make anyone play anyone else. It goes. By record and points. The 9-0 teams go in order by points (Opponents Wins) and then the 8-1 teams, and 7-2, and so on. Just the way it is. HF and Loyola should have been the championship game last year and they met in the quarters.
  15. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 22, 2016 -> 01:37 AM) So looking over the finals from tonight, I expect 8A to look like this. Lets see how close I come tomorrow. #32 Notre Dame at #1 Loyola #17 Curie at #16 Naperville North #25 Fremd at #8 Brother Rice #24 Huntley at #9 Stevenson #29 Evanston at #4 Palatine #20 Glenbard West at #13 Edwardsville #28 Joliet West at #5 Oswego #21 New Trier at #12 Marist #31 O'Fallon at #2 Hinsdale Central #18 Lincoln Way East at #15 Oswego East #26 Maine South at #7 West Aurora #23 Leyden at #10 Neuqua Valley #30 Waubonsie Valley at #3 Homewood Flossmoor #19 Lyons at #14 Taft #27 Lockport at #6 St. Charles East #22 OPRF at #11 Barrington So this looks to be wrong in multiple spots. #32 O'Fallon at #1 Loyola #17 Curie at #16 Oswego East #25 Fremd at #8 Brother Rice #24 Huntley at #9 Stevenson #29 Evanston at #4 Homewood Flossmoor #20 Glenbard West at #13 Neuqua Valley #28 Joliet West at #5 Oswego #21 OPRF at #12 Edwardsville #31 Waubonsie Valley at #2 Hinsdale Central #18 Lincoln Way East at #15 Taft #26 Maine South at #7 West Aurora #23 Leyden at #10 Barrington #30 Notre Dame at #3 Palatine #19 Lyons at #14 Naperville North #27 Lockport at #6 St. Charles East #22 New Trier at #11 Marist

  17. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Oct 22, 2016 -> 01:13 AM) I thought that was where Maine south would be. Rice coaching continues to fail. At half take a knee and go in up 2 scores. Mount Carmel out of state. ESL was winning anyway but I thought MC would go deep in 7A I reworked it. Brother Rice gets Fremd with Glenbard West in 8A
  18. QUOTE (greg775 @ Oct 21, 2016 -> 10:49 PM) Rice lost by 11, 48-37 I believe it was. I don't know how anybody's gonna slow the Loyola machine in the playoffs. Rice is gonna have to win two games (is it two or just one we need to win for rematch?) then give it another shot vs Loyola in the quarters. It seems to me the only way to beat 'em is to match em score by score, then SOMEHOW get a turnover or pick six or something and grab a lead of nine or more points. You got to somehow lead them by more than eight the entire second half cause they are gonna beat you in a game of "whoever has the ball last will win." The fact Loyola ran the ball so well tonight could either help or hurt Loyola in the rematch. They might just stomp us in the rematch or, we might get fortunate and force a fumble or two in the cold weather and get the two TD lead I'm talking about. I would think the upcoming cold weather isn't gonna be good for Rice and Loyola's passing game, but seems to me Loyola has the ability to run the ball against great competition and Rice is a bit shaky in that regard even with a stud like Valladay. I like everything about Rice cept the defense is 'probably' not state title caliber and offense is a tad worse than Loyola's. Whether Rice is better than everybody else in 8A ... I have no idea. To the experts are Loyola and Br. Rice clearly 1-2 in the state?? And nobody else is close? Homewood Flossmoor, Hinsdale Central, and Palatine are all pretty damn good. Bradley Bourbonnais good too. Looks like Maine South at Brother Rice in round 1 unless Glenbard West is 8A.
  19. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 20, 2016 -> 11:50 PM) He was torched. Barkley looked very uncomfortable and very bad. I presume Bears have to think long and hard about what they do with Cutler. I presume he could play in 11 days, but do they ever play him again (and risk him getting hurt and thus the Bears being on the hook for him in future years) or will they fully stick with Barkley (and whomever they sign off the street). I'm sure Barkley will look better with some real practice, but if Barkley is going to finish out the season, we might not win another game. They owe Cutler nothing in future years regardless. Cutler is gone at season's end. Bears can save $14 million by cutting Cutler with a $2 million cap hit.

  21. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 20, 2016 -> 12:55 PM) Keith Law raved about Tatis Jr today....damn Yep. Called him a potential star and said he'd be definite 1st round pick in upcoming draft if eligible.
  22. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 20, 2016 -> 12:37 PM) He was. He was having a good season but the constant weight issues seem to be contributing to these injuries. He's a free agent at season's end, right?
  23. QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 20, 2016 -> 09:06 AM) I think I'm over X-men. Never even saw Apocalypse and don't have an urge to. Oh man. I thought Apocalypse was great
  24. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 20, 2016 -> 12:35 PM) Hate to be that guy but he's eating himself out of the league I think. I think he was averaging like 5 YPC still though
