I’m with you. Unless someone gives you something of real value, hold onto him and hope a new clubhouse culture (and luck) bring out the best of him. It may be a long shot, but if he returns to being a 140 wRC+ hitter while being healthy he suddenly has a lot of value.

Wow…probably good we sat out that price.
-
Yup, just got to wait for the last couple arms to go and then we should start seeing some serious offers.
-
What’s your plan then? You seem to want to trade Cease for a veteran with limited control? How would you plan to develop a winner by the time said veteran hits free agency?

Meaning what exactly?

The Dodgers are not going trade away Lux at a huge discount, which means he’s likely the centerpiece of a Cease trade. He provides a much better floor than a prospect, but how does that help us when we’re realistically two years from competing? This idea that we trade for Lux at a slight discount and then ultimately deal him for prospects just adds an unnecessary step and doesn’t really change the timeline. And what are these other ways to build a contender from where stand that doesn’t center around developing a mass of prospects?

What you’re missing is they also need proven SP and ones that can immediately step into TOR roles. They didn’t just commit $700M to Ohtani to gamble on a bunch of minor league arms to fill out their rotation.

If you’re actually pretending the MLB has better parity than the NFL, then you simply don’t get it and it’s not worth arguing further. The KC Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, & Pittsburgh Steelers are all small market teams that have been incredibly successful. Does having a great QB make a massive difference in your ability to succeed in the NFL? Of course it does, but the system in place gives small and large market teams an equal chance of landing one of those players. And generally speaking, it gives all teams the same level of resources to retain talent and acquire new talent via free agency. You seem to want to blame the lack of parity in baseball solely on the “cheap” small market owners. And yes, that factor plays some role and baseball needs a salary floor to prevent them from pocketing revenue sharing. But that doesn’t change the fact that the Dodgers & Yankees pull in significantly more revenue than their small market peers and can therefore spend considerably more than them. That is a foundational problem with baseball and again the randomness of the playoffs doesn’t change that. The big market will continue to make the playoffs more frequently than their small market brethren and they will continue to win the majority of World Series titles over time. -

Fine, let’s ignore wealth all together. You’re still using MSA to reflect the size of a media market when you should be using DMA. Based on DMA rankings, here is the reality of the situation: New York: 5 LA: 2 Chicago: 2 Philadelphia: 1 Dallas-Fort Worth: 1 Houston: 2 Atlanta: 2 Boston: 4 Washington DC: 1 San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose: 3 The 14 teams that play in the top 10 media markets have won 23 / 29 of World Series (~80%), while the other 16 clubs have won a total of six. There is zero argument whatsoever that parity exists in baseball. This is the opposite of the NFL…all the MLB wants is for the largest media markets to be the focal point of October baseball so they can maximize TV revenue. -

I’m sorry, but what does this prove other than the smallest market teams are up against horrible odds of winning a World Series? And calling SF & Boston “mid” market clubs but completing ignoring the wealth of those markets is very disingenuous. Move those seven championships to the top group and the disparity is even more telling. It’s wild that anyone can actually believe baseball isn’t a broken mess. The randomness of the playoffs doesn’t change that fact. -
So we cover the league minimum and a potential $500k buyout. I think Stassi worth a roll of the dice, but this basically confirms he has zero value across the league.

You’re making this about the White Sox for some reason and ignoring the fact that many small market will never have the means to sign a contract like in any capacity. And for the millionth, franchise value has nothing to do with liquidity. -

I’m sorry, which other teams were offered this deal by Ohtani? And do those teams also have access to a TV deal worth $320M/year to allow for unlimited levels of spend? -

Sure and so would I, but the Dodgers won’t.

@South Side Hit Men - Do you not like parity? -
We should not be trading for pieces with less than five years of control because there really is no hope of winning until 2026 at the earliest. Lux doesn’t change that calculus and would be a poor fit for us from an asset standpoint.

I just did applaud Ohtani’s desire to win, but that doesn’t mean it’s good for the game and should be allowed. This is basically giving the Dodgers a cheat code on a cheat code. It’s absolutely ridiculous from a parity perspective. -

What do you mean? His $70M AAV only counts $46M against the CBT. It’s that simple. On top of that, the Dodgers only have to pay him $20M over the next 10 years, so beyond the pure accounting loophole they are benefit greatly from a cash flow perspective. -

They weren’t clever…the star that wanted to sign with them himself offered to defer 97% of the contract. And it doesn’t just help them in the short-term, the PV of this is like 30% less as a result of Ohtani’s proposal to do this. But hey, the rich get richer, which I’m sure casual fans will love. -

MLB should just take the best 26 players, put them on the Dodgers, and then award them an automatic World Series appearance. At this point, who the f*** cares as all fairness in MLB is out the window when the Dodgers are not only entitled to the best player in the world who comes with numerous marketing advantages, but also don’t have to pay him for 10 years and are allowed to f*** over the CBT system because said unique talent is making so much money he doesn’t care that he’s basically accepting 70 cents on the dollar.
