If we have PK and AJP due to come off the books at a value of 18 million and we are able to trade for AGon under acceptable terms would it make sense to offer him either 5/110 or 5/115 or 6/135 or 6/140? That puts the value slightly above Teixeira's 8/180 and keeps him in a Sox uniform until he is 35 when he should still be productive. That keeps the number of years reasonable and gives him more than market value. Or backload the contract with something like Year 1 - 18 mil, Year 2 - 18 mil, Years 3-6 25 Mil. Just an idea.
-
The ratio of failure is always much higher than success with reclamation projects. I was rooting more for his getting his stuff together to use him as cheap trade bate than anything else. Still a month to go but at least it was a low risk contract.
-
Do either Jared Mitchell or JDanks2 have the projected range that could make them good CF's? I mean do they have the jump and ability to run good routes in the field?
-
I tried to find any link detailing his pitch development but didn't come up with anything. His K/BB rate was ok but nothing to shout about, I hope he gets it together as our LH starter numbers are a little low.
-
Very disappointing outing from Cabrera. Still 4 weeks to go but not encouraging.

Now this from the SD site: http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/ma...d-man-sullivan/ Important port of article stating AGon's price range and the fact the Pads can't pay. Becks not mentioned but Sox/Peavy are. “This is a premium ballplayer,” said John Boggs, Gonzalez’s agent. “If you think you can get it done, he’s obviously somebody who’s moveable … “I never try to dissolve the possibility (of a deal with the Padres), but I don’t see any signs.” Boggs said his preliminary discussion with Padres General Manager Jed Hoyer was so superficial that “you couldn’t characterize it as a negotiation.” Boggs said Hoyer inquired as to Gonzalez’s expectations; that Boggs cited the eight-year, $180 million deal of New York Yankees’ first baseman Mark Teixeira, and that that comment effectively ended Hoyer’s exploration. Moorad subsequently sent an early-warning signal to anxious fans: “While I’d be thrilled to have (Gonzalez be) part of the organization for the long term, the early signals indicate his cost will be greater than our ability to pay.” Moorad made that statement in an interview on Feb. 2. When it comes to the Padres’ payroll, though, every day is Groundhog Day. Moorad is sensitive to the continuing scuttlebutt that his partnership is underfinanced, and says he is on schedule to make the next installment payment on John Moores’ ownership stake later this month. Moorad also projects payroll growth as his young ballclub matures, but that growth figures to be too gradual to accommodate a Gonzalez extension and certainly insufficient to keep up with the Steinbrenners.

Oddly enough or possibly quite natural there have been no rumors circulating or even started about the Bosox interest in AGon. Just stuff you see on forums about trade proposals (Fantasy stuff).
-
JPN, you don't think Leesman will make the Baron's roster with a good ST?
-
Charles Leesman is also a Non Roster invite. I wonder if with a good ST he gets sent up to AA this year. JPN have you seen him pitch? He is known to have a good fastball but I wonder how his complimentary pitches are coming along? 58 BB's in 154.2 innings. HMM a bit high but we will see.
-
2nd_city, this could well be but too many teams have given up on him to consider him a Coop reclamation project. He has good stuff when right but that has not been the case the last 2-3 years.
-
Anyone rooting for Daniel Cabrera to get his head straight and develop some control and at least have a decent ST? I am.

This could turn into another 5 month long super thread b4 the July deadline if it hasn't already.
-
HD, that is a very good no an awesome package but you know how teams get with their most valueable trade chips. I think it could be less by the time July rolls around but dependant on two things: 1) Morel, Flowers are raking and Hudson is pitching lights out or semi-lights out in AAA. 2) The Pads are so out of it that it makes sense for them to trade AGon for future MLB talent. I am betting by July we should know for sure. I see the Pads really holding on until then.
-
I think if PK didn't have such an albatross for his final year contract he would be more marketable. Then again if KW can convince JR to eat maybe a portion of the contract (4-5 mil) then he becomes a little bit more attractive. It might have to be a 3 team blockbuster if the Pads don't budge on the offers KW makes if we go after AGon. Just sayin there may be more than 2 players in this dance.
-
I wonder what a Soxtalk poll would look like just (To include Slayer in any trade proposal) before the July dealine if we are in the thick of the race but need that bat sorely and the DH committee has failed miserably. And if the Pads are really out of it by then.
-
Mark Gonzalez is now on the AGon trade speculation so this thing does have some legs. Link: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,7757164.story With Peavy coming out and endorsing this it makes the rumor mill more interesting. I had posted a long while back what would be the difference if Peavy asked KW to go after AGon but in the end it probably won't mean a whole lot. Every rumor I have seen has pegged the Red Sox as favorites but with it now somewhat official that KW wants AGon (Level of interest should be pretty high) then this should make for an interesting summer.
-
I can see the need to try and sign AJ as the catching will be thin if 1) We trade Flowers and 2) None of the minor league prospects develop as quickly (Cole Armstrong and Don Lucy) are the high AAA candidates with Josh Phegley and Miguel Gonzalez coming up through A/High A. I am concerned both Armstrong and Lucy will not be everyday catchers and the catcher FA market now looks thin if Mauer gets locked up for a long term contract. Both Phegley and Gonzalez are each 2-3 years away.
-
With Paulie coming off the books this and AJ as well (Catcher may be a problem) that is 18.5 mil committed contracts for 2011 that can be put towards a backloaded extension. Then after 2011 you have Buerhle and Pierre coming off the books for another 22 mil. Some money will be there. Just depends what the Sox determine their real need to be and all of the the upcoming arb rases/extensions. Could be interesting in July.

I think what happens Flav is that the hype machines for a lot of these newspapers and web portals go into overdrive based on some rumor somebody heard that is un-substantiated. But most of the rumors seem to agree it will be a matter of when not if AGon is traded. If you compare his next contract with Teixeira's 8/180 deal then you average about 21-21.5 mil for the 8 years. If Agon rakes this year again he is gonna likely command at least bwtween 20-25. But I am really wary of any long term contract over 5 years. Maybe whoever gets him can extend him for 4 years at about 23-24 per year.
-
I agree 100% DA, I think the sticking point for the Pads might be the size of the haul they want back for a possibly 1.5 years of AGon. It could be 3-4 AAA prospects plus 1-2 A/AA to satisfy their demands, but who knows really. I really expect KW to at least try based on the news he tried to pry Halladay away from the BJays. Especially when this DH committee starts to run out of gas real quick.

I actually pulled the last link that revived this thread from MLBTraderumors. But yeah I can't see KW centering a package of prospects around Beckham. Just can't see it. If starting pitching is the main part of the package I have struggled to wonder if dangling JDanks instead of Hudson cold work, but it messes up our lefty/righty balance that we have right now. I think I have also read some posts lately where JDanks might consider an extension at the end of this year. Not sure on that but I thnk if Morel/Flowers rake then they become 2 attractive pieces come July.
-
My whole premise has been the Pads want cheap MLB ready prospects with all or most of their Pre-Arb years in tact (Which is what Hudson, Flowers, and Morel offer). They have been looking at upgrades for 3rd base, catcher, and starting pitching. They are not in "Win Now" mode as are the WS. So this is why I keep coming back to the theory that with a whole lot of luck these 3 and maybe two other mid level prospects will be having very good years at the July deadline. Hopefully enough to entice Jed Hoyer.
-
Beckham won't happen for sure but I hope some of the good prospects really have a good 3-4 months to increase their value so we get a shot at the trade deadline.
-
Posting this because the Chisox are mentioned a possible suitors for AGon come the July trading deadline, even the Cubs. Enjoy Link: http://www.friarhood.com/voice-of-the-fan/...er-of-time.html With Adrian Gonzalez's future as a Padre in doubt, let's look at the options The chances of Adrian Gonzalez being a Padre beyond the 2011 season seem slim. The Padres are not willing to devote 25-30% of their payroll on 1 player. The Padres will likely explore trades for Adrian at the July 31st trade deadline this year. If they don't trade him this year he will most likely be gone by the start of the 2011 season. What teams could be in on Adrian at the trade deadline or next off-season? Boston Red Sox: I might as well start with the obvious. The Red Sox seem to be a perfect fit. They have a rich farm system, plenty of money, and are in need of a big bat. They also have first baseman/catcher Victor Martinez, designated hitter David Ortiz, and third baseman Adrian Beltre potentially leaving as free agents after this year. Jed Hoyer knows the Sox system like the back of his hand. Players of interest: Ryan Westmoreland CF- He's very advanced for his age (19) and the kid is a tool shed. Casey Kelly RHP- Kelly (19) has 3 potential plus pitches and projects as an ace. Others: Ryan Kalish OF, Josh Reddick OF, Reymon Fuentes OF, Junichi Tazawa RHP, Daniel Bard RHP, Clay Buchholz RHP, Jacoby Ellsbury CF. New York Mets: The Mets don't have anyone at first base worth mentioning on the major league roster. They do have a young first base prospect by the name of Ike Davis who could be ready for the majors as early as this year. The Mets farm system is weak. Ike Davis is one of their best prospects and the Padres likely wouldn't be interested in him because of Blanks. In my opinion, any deal with the Mets would have to start with Fernando Martinez. Players of interest: Jenrry Mejia RHP- Front end of the rotation potential with a big fastball. Wilmer Flores SS- Very young with power potential, solf hands and a plus arm. Others: Brad Holt RHP, Jon Niese LHP, Reese Havens SS, and Josh Thole C. Baltimore Orioles: The Orioles seem like they are willing to spend money for the right player and don't have anyone entrenched at first base. Adrian Gonzalez would definitely be that guy. He is similar to Mark Teixeira whom the Orioles attempted to acquire last off-season. The Orioles also have a ton of prospects and young players that would interest the Padres. The question is will they be willing to give them up? Players of interest: Brian Matusz LHP- Ace potential, 4 potential plus pitches, good command, MLB ready. Jake Arrieta RHP- Good stuff with spotty command, could end up in bullpen. Zach Britton LHP- Sinker/slider type pitcher with fastball that reaches 94 MPH & solid change Others: Matt Wieters C, Matt Hobgood RHP, Brandon Erbe RHP, Kam Mickolio RHP, Mychal Givens SS. White Sox: They don't have anyone set for first base and Paul Konerko will be a free agent after this season. The Sox have money although they don't have much on the farm. A deal would likely have to start with Gordon Beckham. Players of interest: Jared Mitchell CF- Leadoff potential, plus plus speed, patient hitter with some power. Tyler Flowers C- Light tower power, discipline, average arm, may not stick as catcher. Dan Hudson RHP- Three solid pitches, projected middle of the rotation starter or better Others: Jordan Danks CF, David Holmberg LHP. Nationals: They have their new park and could be willing to spend money for franchise player. They currently have Adam Dunn at first base but, he will be a free agent at the end of this season and Dunn is also capable of playing left field. Players of interest: Stephen Strasburg RHP- Self explanatory. Not going to happen. Derek Norris C- Good hitter, above AVG power to all fields, moves well with solid arm. Ian Desmond SS- Plus bat speed, average power, quick hands, good range, average speed. Others Danny Espinosa SS, Jeff Kobernus, 2B, Michael Burgess RF. Mariners: They seem to be all in right now and don't have a legitimate first baseman. They lost some of their prospects to acquire Lee but, they still have a few good prospects and some good young major leaguers. Players of interest: Dustin Ackley- Special bat, average power, plus speed. Playing 2B now, could end up in CF. Michael Saunders LF/CF- All five tools average or better, MLB ready. Others: Adam Moore C, Carlos Truinfel SS/2B, Michael Pineda RHP, Nick Franklin SS, Jose Lopez 2B. Cubs: Derek Lee is a free agent after this year and the Cubs have wanted a left handed bat for a long time. Players of interest: Starlin Castro SS- Great contact, plus speed, good range/arm. Brett Jackson CF- Well above average raw power, plus speed, solid arm, good accuracy. Josh Vitters 3B- Potential to hit .300 30 HR's, may have to move to the OF. Andrew Cashner RHP- Power pitcher, fastball touches 98 MPH. Others: Jay Jackson RHP, Hak-Ju Lee SS, Logan Watkins 2B, Chris Carpenter RHP. Other: There could be a few dark horses. The Giants don't have a long term first baseman. Trading within the division would be unlikely but, they have two very good prospects in Posey and Bumgarner. The Astros could lose Lance Berkman after this year. (free agent) The Marlins need a frst baseman but, are probably the only team cheaper than the Padres. The Diamondbacks need a first baseman but, trading within the division is unlikely. The Rangers have the best farm system in baseball and could move Davis to DH or get fid of him in place of Adrian but, their team is in the middle of being sold. The sale fo the team leaves their payroll situation unknown. The Tigers have Miguel Cabrera but, he's not a very good first baseman. Cabrera could DH while Adrian plays first and they would have a deadly 1-2 punch in the middle of the lineup. The Athletics need a long term first baseman and Billy Bean loves to make trades. He could get Adrian at the deadline if they're in the hunt and trade him later like they did with Matt Holliday. The Rays could lose Pena after this year (free agent) but, probably wouldn't be able to extend him.

Link http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?i...ce=MLBHeadlines Carlos Delgado had a brief Winter League comeback and went 7 for 25 (Not Bad) but has not recovered from hip surgery and still limps a bit. I think he might be fit for part time DH duties but the article points out the offers he has received are not to his liking. There was a lot of speculation on the board a few months back that KW would look at him but with Ozzie being stubborn about the DH by committee plan it does not look likely at all he will be considered. Plus his surgery and subseqent issues with recovery make him a risk. He may retire. Thoughts??
