QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 03:29 PM) And that's why at age 33 no one is counting on him to start. If he wants to stay in baseball then he's going to have to conform to team demands much like he did last season, given the investment there really isn't much to worry about here. It's not like we gave him $4M to be our starting CF, he's making near league minimum to hit the ball hard and play the field every once in a while. He was starting to get people talking again last year until he strained his hamstring, there's still that possibility of a nice payday if he can put up a big year. As long as hes not gonna be counted on as a starter it should be no risk. I don't want another Erstad situation where a scrub is getting 350 ABs. I think its pretty unlikely that he will have a big year though.

QUOTE (YASNY @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 02:52 PM) My gut reaction is to disagree with the general concesus of this being a positive move. First of all Jones has a rep as player who dogs it, just ask Bobby Cox. He was almost certainly a roider who hasn't been able to cut the mustard lately. Now, he may be hungry and wanting to prove a point and could have a great year, but personally, I doubt it. I hope the concensus is right and I'm proven wrong, but this is the way I see this move. Low risk, lower reward. I am kinda suprised that there is this much positive vibe from this one. When I told you guys about the other signing last week I did say you would be less excited about it, but it seems most people like it. Kinda funny that the very first guy to guess who it was last week was right and then people guessed a ton of other names!!

QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 09:56 AM) This is a tough one because they're were a lot of good offensive players in his day that will be competing against him for the Hall. Answer this with your head, not your heart. This is not a tough one at all, not even close. The question should be is he a first ballot HOF.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 08:05 AM) This is an excellent post. I agree. I would rather fix the holes that are in the OF and DH. I will be very disappointed if the fix is Pods and Thome again. I would trade Jenks if I found a taker and it got me a decent OF. I would as well. I think all of them are holes but if we dont have a good OF and DH than the pen will be meaningless. Plus, guys often come out of nowhere and produce in the pen.

QUOTE (AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 01:49 PM) Any news on the "second" signing that was suppose to go along with this signing? nothing official yet

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 01:26 PM) I would think if people were honest with themselves, they're upset about this less b/c it's Vizquel but more because our initial free agent splash isnt a big one. Were this an additional move announced in conjunction with a trade for Adrian Gonzalez for spects, i'm sure everyone would be loving it. Like Orlando Pace being a great signing right after the Cutler trade. Had Pace been the only move of the offseason...i wonder what the response wouldve been. That Pace move hasnt worked out so well...

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 12:05 PM) I like the thought of bringing in OV for late game defense...but who does he go in for? OV to 2b and Becks to 3b? I don't know if they would want to keep moving Becks around. I hope he is locked in at 2b for the next decade and never moves.

QUOTE (lakervin @ Nov 21, 2009 -> 07:18 PM) if the vizquel signing is true im one who likes it. It's true. There will be another signing announced as well, probably on Monday but I am not allowed to say who it is. Its another reclamation project. Most people will probably not be as excited about it as Vizquel but you could argue this guy has a lot more upside. And hes cheap.

What's the strangest/funniest/wildest non-baseball thing at USCF

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 03:01 PM) If that happened and some dude got paralyzed then I am amazed that this story isnt well known. Stuff like that doesnt escape the press easily, even if it was a long time ago It definitely happened. It was a front page story of the Tribune at the time. This would have been in the mid 70s. I am not positive that the dude was paralyzed but I believe that he was at least severly injured. -

I don't recall anything ridiculous at our park but I did see something crazy at Wrigley a long time ago. There was a fight that broke out on the ramps going down after the game. Started between a cubs fan and mets fan who threw a beer. All of a sudden a whole bunch of people were fighting At one point I hear someone yell "throw him over". Then I saw some people lift a guy over the railing and toss him down and he landed in the seats below with a thud. He must have fell at least 50 feet. Eventually another guy got tossed over the side. I think the guys ended up paralyzed. It was a really scary moment. If I recall correctly the guys that got thrown over weren't even in the fight, they were trying to break it up. I was right in the middle of it but only about 10 years old. -
QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 11:29 AM) They put him on a new diet plan and are working on his conditioning, so I imagine they'll try that first. His bat is a lot more valuable at 3B so they should make every effort to keep him there. With Teahen here they've got at least another year to work with if they start Morel in AA and Viciedo in AAA. Absolutely hes more valuable at 3b. Just as Beckham is more valuable at 2b. They have every intention of giving him the chance to be a 3b and continue to work with him. The current thought is he will have to move but he has a shot to change people's minds. Certainly the Sox have to make future lineup projetions. If he can prove them wrong, then thats a good thing!

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 11:08 AM) How is it you can be certain? How much have you seen him play? I personally have seen very little, so I don't know. But I got the impression the organization wasn't ready to move him yet, and still thought he might stick there with more work. Personally I have never seen him play live. I am just passing on some inside info I have that he will be moved. They haven't given up hope yet on him at 3b but the consensus is he will be at 1b.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Nov 20, 2009 -> 08:52 AM) Viciedo at 7, Shelby on the list at all, and saying Mitchell was not a first round talent makes me completely ignore that writer's opinion. I agree on Shelby. I am certain that Viciedo will not be a 3b. Lets hope that he hits enough to be an asset at 1b. Just talked to a Sox scout yesterday and they are very high on Mitchell right now. He said that we will love him.
-
QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 19, 2009 -> 12:20 PM) I'm going to have to disagree with that. Mitchell is just more polished and I can't say Trayce has a better skill-set, although he does have more power potential. Both have sick upsides, but both also have a lot to work on that puts the odds of them reaching that ceiling at much lower levels and it is why they both were outside of the top 10. I would say both have the pure potential of a top 10 or so pick though. Sick upside are two of my favorite words!! At least we have come a long way from the no upside picks of Kyle McCullough, Lance Broadway, Royce Ring, Kris Honel. I hated those days.

QUOTE (balfanman @ Nov 17, 2009 -> 07:51 AM) The problem is getting one of those guys. That's about one 40 HR, 110 RBI man for every 3 teams. This is why I for one would love to get Gonzales here, even if we have to give up all of our top 5 prospects. What are the odds that one of Danks 2, Morell, Flowers, etc., ever turn into a 40 HR, 110 RBI hitter? Even if one of them does it will be at least 3 - 4 years down the road and by then our starting staff will be gone. We need to do this now if it is possible. absolutely zero

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 04:19 PM) The truth is we dont know what AG will be like outside Petco. We can guess but not be sure. Hopefully we find out next year what he's like in a park like...say...US Cellular This is very true. I really doubt he will be a 50 hr guy as suggested earlier. I think the 50 hr seasons are going to be increasingly rare now.

QUOTE (SoxPride56 @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 02:11 PM) FWIW, A person that I know that is in the Padres organization has also told me that the trade is being discussed. He told me the Padres want Hudson in any deal for Adrian. they can have him

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 02:06 PM) I just turned on the Score and they are doing Bears stuff. Dropped them an e-mail with the story. I dont consider it much of a story at this point. The fact that teams have talked about a deal is a long way from anything happening.
-
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 12:32 PM) You are assuming that LAA is in this deal primarily for Konerko. On the contrary, I'd be they are in it to get the right spect or two, and Konerko is a nice 1B/DH fill, as a secondary desired piece. You are also assuming that LAA has what SD wants - the only reason you even have 3-way trades is that a 1-to-1 deal doesn't fulfill their needs. SD may be able to justify losing A-Gon because of the COMBINATION of what they'd get from the two other trading parties. yeah i think konerko would be a minimal piece in any deal. i dont see him being too attractive that anyone would give up much for him.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 11:21 AM) I am sure nothing will be done soon if this is a three way deal. I dont see why the Angels would want Paulie. Kendry was damn good last year and better than PK. Not sure that they would give up much. Plus KW trades never are started with a rumor, they just happen. I am teased (but excited).

QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Nov 16, 2009 -> 11:09 AM) please dont tease me like this

QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 11:37 PM) 1. Beckham 2B 2. Teahen 3B 3. Quentin LF 4. Thome/Flowers DH 5. Konerko 1B 6. Ramirez SS 7. Rios RF 8. Pierzynski C 9. Jor Danks CF hmmm hmmmmmmmmmmmmm? that lineup sucks

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 08:44 PM) You can make a serious list if you wanted beyond that one. Hunter and Jeter come to mind. oh yeah there are plenty of guys who won it based on name or bat

Garfien reports Sox might "revisit" a Thome return

QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 06:41 PM) yeah, im completely over Thome at this point. I want him no where near this team as a player. agreed, the first breakup is the hardest, lets move on -
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 07:30 PM) Dewan has one of the better metrics around. If he says Rios is a good fielder, i'm going to assume he's a good fielder. Good fielder and gold glover are different animals, as are all star and mvp.
