  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 21, 2012 -> 02:21 PM) On another topic, I've heard grayhounds, the dogs that race, as some of the nicest dogs out there. Is that true? Has anybody owned one? Do they just run and run and run? We took a puppy training class and the trainers had a Greyhound. She was very timid and shy. They said she was also very sensitive. They said that another trainer used her as an example of how to walk a dog and used the method where they snap the leash back to "correct" the dog. It took them two weeks to get her to walk on a leash again after that. Needless to say, they didn't use that method when they taught us. They have a chase instinct more than a running instinct. It's Huskies that love to run and run and run.
  2. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Nov 21, 2012 -> 10:12 AM) SOA is on the DVR from last night but Boardwalk and SOA are killing cast members off at a pretty regular clip and I am not sure what I think about it. It really is getting tough to follow SOA while Boardwalk seems to just create new folks. SOA has been killing characters off since the beginning of the show. But they keep adding new ones as well. Like last night.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 03:15 PM) Depends on the Dr. Our kid was due Jan 5, and we induced for pretty much tax reasons, with a mix of wanting to do it over Christmas Break. For our first kid she was induced on Tuesday morning and wasn't actually born until 38 hours later on Wednesday night after an emergency c-section. She was a few days past due by that point though. Second kid we knew was going to be another c-section so we basically got to pick the date. She was due late December but my wife wanted her before Christmas so we had her Dec 22. I tried to get her to wait until January so she wouldn't have a b-day and Christmas so close together, but the tax benefits were nice.
  4. Wait, we have mods here? How much does this job pay? Because according to people from other sites, it's a very difficult job and the people that do it deserve much appreciation and accolade.
  5. QUOTE (pittshoganerkoff @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 10:47 AM) I knew I should have stocked up on Twinkies. Not to eat but to sell on eBay. I like Twinkies, Ding Dongs, etc., but I prefer Little Debbie mainly because they are half the price. Now, anyone who is old enough remembers when Ho-Hos and Ding Dongs were much better...back when they were packaged in foil. I believe the cream was different, too. I saw some of those auctions on Ebay. People were paying $20 - $40 for a box of Twinkies. We went to the outlet store by our house on Saturday morning and they were wiped out. The shelves at the grocery stores were empty too. I'm sure Hostess will be bought by another company and be back in business before too long. I'm not sure what these people that are buying the stuff on Ebay plan on doing with the snack cakes when they get them. Freeze them and keep them forever? I remember the foil packages. They did taste better back then. It seems to me they changed the chocolate covering on the ho-hos and ding-dongs.
  6. Going by fielding % alone (since I don't think they have SABR fielding stats that far back) Trout is better on defense.
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 17, 2012 -> 10:18 AM) In the strictest sense of the standards, no it isn't. It is a negative for Trout. There is nothing in there about projecting what he would have been able to do if he played the whole time. There is something in there about games played being a consideration. I think that's put in there more as a consideration of their durability. It's not like he missed a month because he got benched or he was hurt. He was in the minors. Not much he can do to control that.
  8. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Nov 19, 2012 -> 01:20 AM) My problem isnt as much people being scared of certain breeds I guess, its with the idea of local governments restricting certain breeds being able to be owned. If you choose to own any dog you are ultimately responsible for its actions. If someone is willing to take on the added responsibility of owning a dog that has a stigma attached to it like a pit bull then I think they should be allowed to. Its not like youre letting it roam the streets unattended, when theyre outside they are on a leash and the owner should control its interactions with people. Maybe worst case scenario require a permit to make sure people who own those types of dogs are capable of handling them. This is really the problem with any kind of dog. People get them and then have no idea how to handle them or train them properly. Especially with a big, strong dog like a pit bull. I know a guy that had a rottweiler and she was very, very well trained. He told me that she was basically 100 lbs of muscle and if you don't have absolute control at all times, bad things will happen. Too many people don't know how to control their dog. When it's a little poodle or something, it's cute when it barks and jumps at you. When it's a bigger dog, that's when people get hurt.
  9. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 03:10 PM) There is one in Michigan City. More than the treats, people go there for the cheap bread. We have one right down the street from our house. Although we don't go there very often because we can get bread right at the grocery store for a buck. I hate the way they price things though. It's always something like 3 for 5.50 or 1.98 individually. So we end up spending $20 by the time we are done.
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 02:59 PM) Except Trout missed the first month of the season or so. Exactly. His numbers could have been even better had he been called up sooner. Plus the Angels might have made the playoffs.
  11. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 01:08 PM) The standards for MVP voting. I did not know games played was actually a standard. Just looking at #1 alone Trout should have won. I think the voters were wowed by the Triple Crown and ignored the fact that the Tigers would have actually won more games with somebody else playing third base on defense only. Kind of like a designated 3rd baseman. Cabrera would still get to hit.
  12. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 12:51 PM) Look how both players fared the last two months. Cabrera hands down. Why just the last 2 months? The award is for the whole season.
  13. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 11:16 AM) Except where your team finishes has almost always been a factor in the discussion. It is a huge deal when the person isn't on a first place team. The Tigers wouldn't be a first place team in any other division.
  14. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 10:19 AM) The point wasn't to advocate that everyone pay for their own health care, as SS tried to imply. The point was to highlight that doctors/hospitals, with the enabler that the insurance companies have become, are jacking up costs an amount that can only be considered "insane". I understand having a profit margin...but selling a drug for 600$ that you paid 1.50$ for is just astounding. Along these same lines, I worked at an Osco one time. As an employee discount we were allowed to buy things at cost + 10%. One of the first things that was pointed out to me was that I could buy a bottle of asprin for about 47 cents. I don't remember the retail price but I'm sure it was at least 2 or 3 dollars.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 16, 2012 -> 07:57 AM) Like it or not, propelling your team to the playoffs has always been a key component of the MVP award. It is not the best offensive player, or the highest WAR award. The unmeasurables have always been a large part of the award. To me MVP = best player no matter what team they are on or how they finished in the standings. If Trout was on a last place team and put up the same numbers he would still be the best player in the league.
  16. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 11:10 AM) I recommended that in here quite a few months ago. I adored that book. That's how I found it. I went through this thread and wrote down some titles that sounded interesting.
  17. QUOTE (kitekrazy @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 01:00 PM) A lot of anti Tiger bias here. Triple Crown winner, played in every game but one, I give it to Cabrera because of the Triple Crown. That is so tough to do these days. Triple crown = best hitter. The award is for the most valuable player.
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 15, 2012 -> 08:26 AM) Ozzie had a whole lot to do with that roster failing. This doesn't help him at all. You might as well be talking to a brick wall.
  19. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 06:11 PM) winning the World Series for the 3rd time in 2006 years That's a long time.
  20. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Nov 14, 2012 -> 03:59 PM) Nice episode but the storylines are getting tough to follow without a scorecard. Indeed. It's hard to remember who knows what about who and who is on which side. Its interesting to see how the show has gone from SAMCRO vs. some outside force in the first few seasons to the internal struggles of the MC itself.
  21. Just finished "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline. As a child of the 80's and a slight geek, this was right in my wheelhouse. There were a couple of references that I didn't quite get because I hadn't played the game or watched the movie but I enjoyed it overall.
  22. Sons of Anarchy is a 90 minute episode tonight.
  23. I've been with US Cellular since I got my very first phone and they were known as Cellular One. Tried switching to Verizon once, but that only lasted a couple of weeks and I switched back. Never really had any big problems with them. I've fulfilled my latest contract and am just going month-to-month now. I was just thinking about getting a new phone soon but I wonder if this is the time to switch to a new carrier. I've noticed that all the other companies advertise the fastest speeds or the best coverage while US Cellular advertises a rewards program.
  24. QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Nov 6, 2012 -> 04:16 PM) A few years back, when the IL governors' race was between Blago and Judy Baar Topinka, I wrote in Abraham Lincoln. Those were less attractive options than the main event today, but not by too much. For all the bad that Blago did, I'll give him credit for the open road tolls (which I use every day to and from work) and Allkids (which I used for my kid's insurance for many years).
  25. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2012 -> 08:53 AM) I was more putting it in there for the pages about Adam Dunn. Ortiz is about as solid of a comp for Dunn as you can get. Dunn is younger and might hit a few more HRs but Ortiz > Dunn in pretty much every possible way offensively.
